I have owned many VWs (air cooled) over the years. And rebuilt a few. The difference is, every trip in a VW is a journey.

My Dad owned and ran a Volkswagen wreckers in Moorabin Australia from 1985 till the mid 2000s. He hated them but it allowed him to follow his passion of cars he was proud as was I to see him receive post cards from all over Australia where customers had driven their Kombis, Type 3s and beetles. I grew to love them my first car a 67 Splitscreen, then a 71 Bug sold to buy a 56 Oval, then a 58 Bug a 64 Bug I drove for a few years. I love them all whether its a Barn door Kombi a split window beetle or a 74 Bug. Thank you for a wonderful documentary. Dad would have been 79 today I miss him and talking cars with him.

I was a backer of this film. Never got the shirt they were supposed to send. I did receive the DVD and also have their other film "The Bus". They did a great job on both.

In two years, I will have owned my 79 Beetle Convertible for 40 years! My first car. Have a few more now, but I will drive the bug till I die!

The best documentary I have seen on the Beetle and its story. I have owned a ‘65, ‘73, ‘02 &’04 . I would swop my Merc for my old ‘65 1200 today. ❤️

Amazing documentary for an amazing car. I remember that since I was a kid, I always loved old cars, specially the beetle, I thought it looked and sounded so cool. There was a neighbour that had a beautiful 81' white brazilian model (here in chile brazilian models are the most common) , and also was a very well known VW mechanic, so everyday outside his house you could see different bugs and buses parked that he had to repair. One day in 2008 he went to buy to a near shop and his car was parked there, so my mom took me some pictures with it, and I was so happy and proud of those pictures, dreaming that someday I would own one. That man passed away around 2013 in his 80s, but his son kept in the business, he learned everything from him. My father knows him as well as his father, and they both knew that I loved beetles. Around 2021, this guy offered my dad an 81' brazilian bug, dark purple color. He restored it for his daughter, but she never liked it at all, so the car was in his house without moving for around 3 or 4 years. Being 21 years old, I got my first car, that purple one. I started working on it and really enjoyed that process of resurrecting it; I replaced the carpet, the door panels, the hood, the running board, installed a cassette stereo, and many things more. One day, I checked again those picture that were taken 13 years ago (15 now), so I could finally tell my 8 y/o me, that I finally did it. I had a shock when I noticed that the car from the picture, had the same plate of the car that I just got. I shed some tears at that moment because I couldn't believe it. When I told it to the seller, he couldn't be more amazed, and told me that this proves that specific car was meant to be mine at some point of my life, and his father, wherever he is, must be happy that now belongs to me: someone that loves it and appreciates it the way it deserves, and worked on getting it back to life again.

My father, an Army aviator stationed in Germany in the late 60s had a white bug and purple bug with a flower painted on the door. The MPs on the Kasern made him paint the door! hahah great times. We have pictures washing them in the quarters in Schweinfurt (spelling) Germany. I can remember riding in the back with my big brother.

I have worked on many air cooled and other Volkswagens. I think that you have done an amazing job on your one. The crowning point was when you presented it to the previous owners wife and family. That is a very special and precious moment ❤️

My grandpa drove one to work for 40 yrs and we all loved it. He bought my first car 69 beetle when i was 15 for $400 and i tricked it out with porsche mags, 280z leather seats, dual webers and chromed out 1600, chrome running boards and everything else stock vw. I loved that car, I wanna get one to rescue now!

Yes, it is about the stories. I met my wife to be in January, 1967, and I remember how excited she was as she told me that she was going to pick up her very first new car, and It was a VW Beetle. Fifty Six years later and we still have it. Our son refers to "her" as his sister. It really is part of the family. I think that if it could be it wouldn't be in the garage, but would have its own bedroom!

Driving a VW Bug was truly a Zen experience. You were one with the car & road. It was also the sound of one hand clapping, a hand on the wheel, other on the shifter, & a smile on your face.

My mom's VW Bug she bought new in the 1970's (before I was born) and had owned for 2 weeks was totaled in a parking lot when someone crashed into her car in Southern California and drove off while she was buying groceries. She was always sad when she told me the story, because she really liked her new car. She had actually specifically parked far out in the parking lot away from other cars and still got hit. The driver of the other car never got caught.

Fantastic documentary! Thank you for explaining the unique smell of the VW Bug. When I was a small child in the early '60s, my dad had a VW Beetle and I still remember that musty, weird smell -- which turns out to be a combination of horsehair (in the seat padding), rubber and gas/oil. Mystery solved after all these years!

I drove a red 1966 Bug during my last year of HS in 1972. My father gave me the nickname Junebugg when I was a baby and called me Bug throughout my adult life. So this car was kind of special. Gas was 28 cents a gallon then and a couple of dollars took care of me for most of the week. Only problem with the car that I remember was that the back seat was a bit small for those Saturday night drive-inn movie dates!

Love this. I'm the caretaker of a '55 Beetle. The stories it can tell me. Of all the cars I have, it is my favorite.

I love to see these old Beetles rescued. My first car was a red ‘64 sunroof bought for $325. I’ve owned a ‘57, three ‘64’s, a ‘66, a ‘73 and a ‘74. The last ‘64 was a mint green convertible that I owned for 35 years. It is now living in the Netherlands just off the border with Germany. I loved them all!

I owned a 1965 Type II from 1988 to 1998 (I named it something I stole from Benny Hill: Indestructible II). It was my transportation for most of those years and my home for two. It always started, put up with my abuse, and respected my meager budget. Repairs and maintenance were simple. In addition John Muir's book How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive (the "idiot's guide") has some fantastic illustrations. Fast forward to 2015. I worked at an auto repair shop and was tasked with servicing the transmission of a 21th century Volks. Suffice it to say no one without a service lift and pressurized air could do it (the fluid also cost $20 a quart). Modern-day Volkswagens are hemorrhoidal to work on and require a case of specialized tools. This was a well-done video, and the finished restoration story was truly touching. Thank you for producing it.

I learned to drive in a bug at age 12, on back farm roads in upstate NY. Because they were so cheap to buy and easy to repair, I owned 2 (1960 and 1962, both dark green) in my early 20's. Took several cross country trips and had many adventures in them, including waking up one morning after sleeping in it in the mountains of CO, to find I was 2 feet from a full sized elk. At 5 ft. 3 in. I could push my Bug all by myself. I once got to ride in a Model T Ford, an experience I've never forgotten - like time travel. I hope all of you get to ride in a VW Bug someday. Then you'll know what it was like to have that little car take you off to the next adventure.

Great video! I've owned 5 VW Bugs and a dune buggy from the 60s and loved them. As a kid the 60s riding in my family's VW's the nauseating smell of the vinyl interior off-gassing on hot day was not one of my favorite memories, otherwise a very practical car. Even today, I still seek out basic and practical vehicles in a modern car like a VW was back then.

Really enjoyed that documentary. VW have managed to put a soul into their cars. My first car was a 85' Scirocco and this year I completed by midlife crisis by buying a new (ish) Scirocco and I think I love it more than my first.

We had a '63 beetle in the mid to late 60's in Anchorage, AK. Then a '68, and then a '67 Fastback, and then a '68 squareback with a gasoline heater. In my teens, my dad bought a brand new '77 Rabbit, and then a new '82 Rabbit Diesel pickup. My first cars were the Beetle's main competition, the 1970 Honda 600, and the 1970 Austin America. I still have the America 40yrs later, but I returned to my Volkswagen routes, first with a 1979 Rabbit Diesel 2 door sedan, and then with a 1981 Rabbit Diesel LX Pickup, which I still drive as my daily. I became a mechanic a was the lead VW tech at the local dealer. My daughter's first car was one of only 500 built, New Beetles, which she still has. We're proud to still own Volkswagens. German car's have a soul.

Watching U rope that VW windshield in had me holding my breath! Did a lot of these in my career as an auto glass technician! Was definitely in the top 10 hardest installations without breaking it! Kudos my friend! U nailed it! 👍👏

Wow, this brings back a lot of high school memories. My first one was a '62 followed by a '72 super beetle and finally a '65 convertible. Out of all the cars I have had I miss the '65 the most. After watching this I regret getting rid of it even more.

What a heart warming documentary! In India, in the 70s and even the early 80s we had very few car models around - primarily the Morris Oxford, known as the Ambassador; and the Fiat 1100, locally branded the Premier Padmini. Oh, there were a few Standard Heralds and Gazels too. I entered school in 1974 - The St. Xavier's High School in Delhi - in Preparatory, or Prep. for short, basically kindergarten. It was a boys' only school. Our fathers were mostly either American or European. They had this powder blue Beetle with white wall tyres, and immaculately polished chrome hub caps and trims. It used to stand proudly outside their residence, which was within school. And whenever someone drove off in it or came back in, we could hear this lovely chugging sound. We used to silently admire it. And, after a few years, we came back after summer vacation - and the Beetle was gone! It really broke our hearts.

I'm not a car person but lots of people of my generation just loved (and still love) the beetle. It used to be their very first car. You would see young men washing and waxing their car on weekends. I think it does not happen anymore. Cheers from Brazil.

My first car - pale blue 1970 Beetle RBN 908J. It's the only car I have ever owned where I've periodically had a recurring dream I still own it - and it's sat in my mum & dad's old garage. Then in the split second you wake up - you realise (with great regret) you no longer do own it.

Just passing by to say i'm saving money to buy a vw beetle in 2024. It was my first car... i drove it for 10 years and had to sell it. Every comment told in this doc is true, it's part of our personality somehow... . I want to feel the sensation of driving my bug again ❤. 2024 is the goal.

Totally enjoyed this! My mom’s car (her independence as a housewife of the 50’s) She bought a red VW with her inheritance from an uncle that raised her. I learned to drive it (stick shift) under age. I can remember my younger brother and myself being so small that we both fit in the (jump up?) being the back seat. Of course fighting ended that quickly enough - dib’s on passenger seat became dib’s on the jump up. The passenger seat wasn’t a bad trade off as you had the dash handle to hold on to for support. My mom later progressed to a Squareback VW which allowed a summer’s worth of goods to be transported to the cottage. This was also the first car of her’s I crashed! Also my first car was a 63 VW (bought in 1970 - already a beater) in which I reversed the wheels - something you could do on VW’s to make them look really cool.

Thank You! In 1970 I returned home from service in the US Navy to Seattle and lived in a hippie commune. First day I noticed an abandoned VW sitting in the garage and purchased it for $135. I knew absolutely nothing about auto mechanics so that day I purchased a Chiltons manual and a metric socket set. This particular bug needed a clutch so I jacked it up using it's VW jack, set the car on bricks I found around the yard, and pulled the engine with no fancy tools. Set the engine on blocks of wood and bricks. I drove that car for many years. I was so broke I'd "repair" the exhaust system with weekly wraps of Folgers coffee tins & bailing wire

Thanks for sharing your stories, it reminds me of my 62" black bug as I called her. I bought it for three hundred dollars in the Bronx as a young man and learned how drive manual transmission taking it home, bucking and kicking all the way. It had no heat because the ducks were rotted out but something strange happen that I've never experienced before in any car, a bond between automobile and man. Now I am old and would love to get another one. They used to call it the "Love Bug", so appropriate!

The smell is what I remember from my Dad's 1967 Bug he bought brand new from HBL VW in Fairfax Virginia, it was a dark blue color.

I've been in a beetle only once in the last 30 years, but even now sitting here I can distinctly recall the specific beetle interior aroma - smell. My grandmother bought Volkswagens, which was a bit unusual as she lived not too far from Detroit.

I drove a 1955 Bug from Pacific Grove Calif to Cocoa Beach Florida in the spring of 1968. This was done non stop ,except for gas, food, and restrooms, all in 51 hours. I have owned a 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, a THING (POS,) Jetta POS), 54 double door right hand drive bus, 71 bus.

I’ve always loved the Beetle. The first car I owned was a used 1964 that I bought in fall of ‘66. In May of 1968 I traded it in on my first new car, a shiny red ‘68. Great memories of both!

Early 60s Beetle in black is, to me, one of the most eerie cars around. Not because of its origins, but because of one of the first scenes in the film Walkabout.

As young kids in 70s we used to play tag on top our beetle's hood and roof and never caused a dent ( try doing that with today's cars). Twenty years later and I still remember the first time I drove our beetle (a different one) at night, I kept loosing the stick shift in the dark because of there was so much space in front foot area. 😆

Yes, my first car was a 1967 bug. My brother rolled it off a hill. The body was a wreck. I bought 1961 body. If you knew how I did it you would never believe me. I lifted both body’s. Rolled the pan out from the one body to the next. It took a lot of pieces of wood and stuff laying around to get them high enough. No one to help me but I liked that because I learned so much about the car from top to bottom front to back. I turned down 3k in 1987 and it was left in my parents garage. My father sold it for $300.00. I was really upset but didn’t have anywhere to put it and had no choice. It was painted yellow. Lowered with 5 spoke empi wheels. Beautiful. The time I put into that car. Ugh. Had a 1965 ghia but never had a bond like that bug. Sold it pretty quick.

By far, this documentary was one of the best that I had ever seen.. My sister bought one of these ('1963 Beetle) back in the early '70's . Such a fun car to drive!!! Extremely reliable and so easy to maintain!!! Inexpensive to operate... Cross- winds did require a lot of attention to keep them traveling straight, and sometimes A/C would have been nice to have, but these cars were the ultimate providers of freedom to those who LOVE to travel around and take in the views, of beautiful landscapes... They are almost like members of the family.... And , THAT is what this excellent documentary captures best... Thank You for posting this!!! p.s.- at the 'credits' section of this video, there is an associate producer named Mark Porter... I had an auto- shop instructor in H.S. named Jim Porter... He LOVED VW's... I'm wondering if Mark Porter is related to Jim Porter.. Just Curious...

8:32…They definitely float. But they don’t float indefinitely. To close the door easily, you have to have the window open as they are almost airtight. I know as I had 4 early 1960s VW beetles and a ‘66. My dad also had a 1960 bug.

My dad got his driver's liscence in the 80's, and he drove all around new york city. Back then, the majority of people in New York City still drove older cars, instead of today where they buy a new car every three or four years (because there's almost no old cars in the city as far as I can see). And he used to educate me about road safety and government standards of the roads and such. One story he liked to tag along was when he was on the highway, he almost crashed into the backend of a old volkswaggon from the 50's/60's, because he could barely see those tiny red tail-lights. He described them as two dim little red dots in the dark.

Still missin' my old '65 w/ crank handle sunroof. So many good times in that baby....

My dad drove a VW Beetle for years. He loved it. One of the best things about it was the fact that in winter, you could go just about anywhere and not mind the snow. My dad fought in WW2 so go figure. He didn't seem to care about the Hitler aspect of it. One other factoid: our family was made up of two parents and 5 kids and we all fit. My sister and I would ride in the "way back" behind the back seat looking out the rear window.

Glorious. Sublime. Thank you! Born in 1960- my parents were Mad Men at Doyle Dane Bernbach, the agency handling the VW account. They were besties with Bob Gage and Roy Grace and Bob Kuperman (the creatives on the account). We had a brand new 69 cabriolet- in VW blue with silver grey top and white interior- and an AM/FM radio. My first car in 1977 was a baby blue 71 flat windshield Super Beetle with Macpherson strut front end, 1600 dual port head motor, and no emissions controls! (Best year ever?) Few Things in life work as well as a Volkswagen!

An amazing story ❤. Certainly have a great following. I’ve owned 5 VW Beetles from ‘57 to ‘70 when I was younger, all were extremely reliable. I’ve always had a soft spot for them and now I’d like to rekindle my love affair with these amazing cars by owning probably a 1303 model.

Love this doc because of my experiences with VW. I worked at two dealerships from 1969 to 1982, had two Bugs, had two buses (one '65 camper) and many great experiences with all.

What a great video of a most fascinating and amazing car that permeated the psychie of our day. It brings back a flood of memories first of my great aunt's new 64 bug she ripped through the gears in New England it was a joy to ride with her that car was made for the winding roads. And than our 65 convertible bug,, fun times,, great car .😊😊

Many, many good points in the timeline of this Beetle, but I think the best one is where the old and new moves out of the shed. Also, this was far better entertainment than many programs on TV. RU-vid became my TV.

Lol at 51:38! I spent many, many of my teenage hours helping my best friend work on his various VWs, and heard a lot of cussing and saw many wrenches fly across the garage. My buddy still has his ‘55 bus over 3 decades later, and I finally picked up a ‘67 Squareback last year.

There was a bug in Fairbanks Ak in 1978. It was sprayed with 6 inch of foam to keep it warm. I loved it!

Great documentary. Several Beatles in my family - my Mother had a blue one, an uncle a very early one in grey. Here in Australia they were exceptionally popular and many survive. Think I may have to add one to the collection!

Brilliant doco. Loved the stories and the car itself is a legend. But what happened to the sound? It was butchered in some areas and it kinda ruined parts of it

I have a friend who has more than 200 VW engines, 25 and 30 HP, in original shape! Not basket cases,original parts,pistons,everything,no rust! He has been collecting these beautiful engines over 20 years! Those people,who have Split Windows and Ovals should think about having an ORIGINAL SPARE ENGINE,before these beautiful air cooled engines disappeare! He has original KDF engines for Kübelwagen too!

At 15, about 161, my dad was totally into VW. He considered it the only car worth owning. When I visited him (divorced), I found the two he owned cramped but with comfortable seating and legroom. I learned to drive on one. They were slow, but cheap to drive and service. I remember we took a fishing trip in SE Oregon, which is mostly high desert. The highway between our planned stops was a great circle of some 200 miles, but there was mapped a "road" in a straight line which turned out to be an old pioneer road, now Jeep trail at best. The relatively high clearance of the VW allowed us to negotiate that trial for about 50 miles, although so slow that the highway around might have been almost as quick. We flattened a lot of sagebrush on that trip.

I had a 1962 wagon cost $1500 drove it everywhere in the bush ,in town ,never broke down,never cost me money, and sold it for $1599 6 years later. great car.

I absolutely LOVE Beetles. Thanks to God I finally purchased a 2013 Beetle Turbo Convertible on 09/26/2023. I also drive a Mercedes C300 Sport and let me tell you, when I purchased the Beetle, I cried for days. I always wanted a Beetle since a kid and for many years, there was a blockage which never allowed me to purchase a Beetle. There is nothing like a Beetle. It was truly created to spark emotions and to feel like a friend.

Just like the car, the doco had it's imperfections (audio missing in some parts) but a great watch.. also shed some tear there.🐞🌺☮

My first car was 1960 ragtop volkswagen beetle, I learned to drive my brothers 1973 super beetle! 23 years later and I still have my 1960 beetle ragtop sunroof!

I especially like the Jason didn't restore his 1960 #113 SDDX, he resurrected it . !960 was the last year they used that particular ignition switch and it's still going strong . I'm old and remember my father's direct imported 1954 Typ II Kombi ~ back then you had to go on a waiting list and take whatever the dealer offered you . He went to Germany on work and brought home a brand new Kombi to haul us six screaming brats 'round in . By 1970 I was a VW Mechanic and still have one last Bug, my son took the rest to enjoy . -Nate

I keep in touch with nearly everyone that I have purchased from or sold to my Volkswagens. It's really fun to see the how others are enjoying their lives with them.

As a gen x it's baffling to me how vw bugs have become so expensive! I remember when I was 16 in around 1979 ,1980 you could buy old bugs that actually ran for less than $500 dollars. My first car was a 1967 bug that was built the same year I was born. I rebuilt it from the ground up all by myself with the help of the classic ," how to keep your bug alive book" I learned so much doing it! Recently I looked around thinking of buying one to restore. I was shocked to find even basket cases going for over 10 grand! Seriously what happened?

My first car was a VW Golf MK1 - '95 Citi Shuttle 1.6. My brother always had Golfs, I grew up with them. Past 10 years I own a Golf 4 GTI, use as my daily car and love it. My dad's sister had a Bug in the 70's/80's.

Overall, I enjoyed this documentary. I really like the personal story of restoring the family VW heirloom and surprising the widow at the end of of the piece interspersed with bits of VW history and other interesting tidbits. On the down side, there were several places in the video (sorry, I didn't mark them but there were several) that had recorded music or just silence covering the narration which I found to be a bit jarring in an otherwise excellent presentation.

Im 22 now, when i was 15 I bought a 73 super beetle with an autostick from the original owner. I loved that car and took it everywhere. Broke down every other week lol but I loved it. Still have it but sadly its been pushed to the back of the shop till I have the time and resources to do it rigjt. I bought it from the original owner who was selling it because his wife sadly developed cancer. About 2 years after buying it, I was working in a grocery store and this dude comes through my line. Being in smaller town, he had seen the beetle in the parking lot multiple times and assumed the owner worked there. So he asked me if I knew who owned it. When i said I did, he lit up. Turned out it was the orginal owners son, and he told me all about trips the family would take in it, and told me how he learned to drive in it when he was a kid. Old VWs always have a way of bringing people together.

Great documentary, really heartwarming, I've never seen a real bug but it was really fun to watch. My dad drives a VW T3 it's also a cool rear engine thing, the last rear engined Volkswagen.
