I really, really dig this song. The vibe sort of puts me in mind of "Country Death Song" by the Violent Femmes. Very dark and intense. First song I've heard in few years that puts chills down my spine.

So I kind of feel like I get what Darger's epic this is based on is about, from reading about it to understand this. The Vivian Girls are Christians from the Christian country of Abbieanna, while their enemies are atheists from the invading atheist country of Glandelinia, and they want to enslave the people of the country they are invading. Christian child soldiers (the Vivian girls) organize themselves and resist the invasion and the enslavers with guns and explosives in a guerilla resistance, and the fighters are often tortured and executed rather than enslaved if they are captured alive. For some reason in some of Darger's illustrations the Vivian girls are naked and have male parts, while in others they are naked and have no parts at all. Nobody knows why Darger portrays them this way. It could be that the boys dress as girls to avoid suspicion of being part of the resistance by the adult soldiers of Glandelinia who may not be able to imagine that innocent-looking little girls could ambush or kill adults, but this is complicated because the girls actually begin the story as princesses of Abbieanna before the invasion, suggesting they were raised as girls. The Vivian girls also have superhuman, even godlike strength and perfect moral virtue as Darger understands it, despite their diminuitive and innocent appearance, and its unclear whether they are even entirely human, or whether they may be saints, non-human angelic beings or demigods. The soldiers of Glandelinia are portrayed as evil guys, and the resistance of the Vivian girls is portrayed as just by Darger. Darger wrote two endings to the narrative, one where the Vivian girls win, expel the invaders and reestablish Christianity, and the other where the Glandelinians destroy the resistance and solidify their rule over all of Abbieanna. What is interesting in the music video is that both the Vivian girls and the Glandelinian men seem to be portrayed as morally ambiguous, Christian symbolism is absent from the Vivian girls, and actually the girls seem almost pagan, although its hard to tell why they are dancing around the tree and shouting. Also, its interesting that the girls here lead the men out of the house in a way that seems almost voluntary, as if the men are suddenly hypnotized to obey the girls just by the sight of them. The girls then seem to kill the men. Its hard to tell whether smoke is coming from the base of the tree or not, but either way, the Glandelinian men being tied up in the way they are in the dead of night doesn't bode well for them. It might be that the men believe themselves to be guilty of something, and they voluntarily allow the girls to kill them out of guilt. Perhaps this is the result of a kind of guilt-hypnosis or perhaps not. That's the most I can make of the haunting video. The song seems to be written from the perspective of a Glandelinian soldier questioning his participation in the war and whether he deserves to live after what he has done and with what he has to keep doing to survive. The song seems to end though with the Glandelinian soldier urging himself onward anyway despite his doubts. It seems to be implied that the war might be more complicated than Darger suggested, since lines like "And people wanna grow old in the cradle When the snake's all around in the reeds And you ask me to fear of no evil When your fire's all over my feet" suggest that the Glandelinians may have invaded because they are terrified of the Vivian girls and seek to kill or enslave them before the girls can grow up to invade Glandelinia with their full powers. I'd say given how the Vivian girls are portrayed, this interpretation makes a lot of sense to me, since the adult Vivian girls or women do seem quite likely be both interested in going on a Crusade to spread Christianity, and fully capable of either destroying an entire atheist country on their own or forcing it to convert to Catholicism. Certainly makes me want to read Darger lol. I wonder whether my interpretation of the video and song is what was intended or not.
