The Burbs was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, and continues to be. Perfect blend of comedy and spooky fun. The characters and acting are phenomenal. My favorite character is Rumsfield, played by the great Bruce Dern.
Went and saw this movie in theater on my first date ever. Love it so much, seen it hundreds of times. Later in the early 2000's when I was married and had married friends and we all were living in the suburbs we all associated each other with characters from this movie, and I was Rumsfield. Continues to be at the very top of my all time favorites.
Have you seen the latest Bill Burr movie called Old Dads? Bruce Dern makes a great cameo as an Uber driver. He must have been around 90 years old. His voice was instantly recognisable. I love The 'burbs, it's one of our family's classic films to quote, probably seen it at least 50 times. Bruce Dern is a legend, the whole cast was fantastic - full of personality.
@@L3onOfKings Old Dads was incredible. Those three main actors should do more together. It was like a new Michael Cain/Morgan Freeman/Alan Arkin trio. Immediately clocked Dern was super excited to see him. Loved him since Silent Running. I really need a copy of the Burbs, I saw it on TV as a kid and watched it each time it was on. It is a movie I wish I had watched more, because it's very very rewatchable. It's a perfect movie in so many ways.
This was the beauty of 1980's movies. They were just fun. They didn't all have to have a deep meaning or thoughtful plot. Just hijinks and fun. Loved this movie as a kid.... love it now.
Wtf are you talking about? They made thoughtful movies with plots then too... did you not know this? 🤣 good lord. Yeah, watch Blue Velvet and tell me what a light, rollicking good time it is. 🤘
Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher. What more could you want? Filmed in the most famous neighborhood in America. Every classic sitcom like Bewitched was on that street.
Wrong, Bewitched house was on the Warner lot. Blondie St. Gidgit, My Three Sons, Dream of Jeannie & Dennis the Menace. You’re thinking of the Universal lot. Desperate Housewives Wisteria La. Leave it to Beaver, Munsters house is the Klopeks.
Another fun fact apparently shortly after this film completed filming Feldman started his long future with drugs & supposably being a victim of hollywood. I never liked him he was never a good actor but he was funny in this one. THe tan lines was a particularly funny line in my youth. As was the idea of being in my 20s or so living on a block with a bunch of crazy adults & saying & I'm the one people say is crazy & all sorts of negative things being a young person lol.
The actor who played Walter, Gale Gordon, was also Lucille Ball's boss on the Lucy show, back in the 60s. There is an easter egg in this movie with a nod to that role. When the group are in Walter's living room, look on top of Walter's TV and you will see a framed picture of him and Lucy.
Nice reaction. The Burbs is an underrated gem. It received poor reviews initially but it gained popularity over the years. It gets better as you watch it a few times. Bruce Dern was epic in this film: "Who's going to clean up this mess? Well, you are because you are a garbage man." There are classic lines throughout this classic 🏆 🎥.
This film was directed by Joe Dante. He also directed the Gremlins films, Innerspace, Matinee, and Small Soldiers. He sort of created his own style, which was a terrific mix of horror and comedy. This movie is a perfect example of that. I highly recommend you check out the other films in his body of work. They're all a fun time!
This explains why I noticed three of the cast from Innerspace in this movie. The trash guy (Cowboy), The old neighbours hot wife (Jack's ex), and the doctor (Jack's boss).
One of my favorite underrated flicks from the 80s. Every stereotype is covered, to the nth degree. Hilarious. Looking forward to impressions from both of you.
Art was played by Canadian Rick Ducommun, who sadly passed away some years back. Loved this movie so much I had a VHS copy, and later upgraded to a DVD copy! A ton of quotes used almost daily. I recall fixing a beer tapper in Australia at an airport for the bartendress, and when I finished said, "A soldier's way, saves the day!" then she insisted I drink for free until my flight boarded.
Rick and his brother PD started Skull Skates, you can see the shirt worn by Ricky Butlers friend in a few scenes. Rick snuck in that product placement for himself!
The 'Burbs was filmed entirely at Universal Studios over ten weeks in the summer of 1988, mainly on the Colonial Street set on the back lot, which served as the Mayfield Place cul-de-sac. The Colonial Street set had been used in 1987's Dragnet, also starring Hanks, as well as Joe Dante’s Gremlins. At the time The 'Burbs began production, it was being used as the location for The New Leave It to Beaver television series. The street set has a long history, spanning over 60 years of movies and television. From 2004 to 2012, it was used in the filming of the TV series Desperate Housewives, in which the street was known as Wisteria Lane. After the production of Desperate Housewives ended, the street underwent a small makeover to remove the essence of Wisteria Lane, so that it could be used in other productions. As of May 2012, most of the iconic white fencing and wisteria has been removed. Interestingly, the house next to where Cory Feldman’s character lives, was formerly 1313 Mockingbird Lane….home to The Munsters. Also, you might recognise Wendy Schaal (Bonnie Rumsfield). She had many guest roles in television series of the mid-1980s, most notably as Marilyn Kelsy in Airwolf. Since 2005 she has primarily worked in voice acting, most notably voicing Francine Smith in the animated comedy television series American Dad!
I think To Kill a Mockingbird was filmed right down the way too. Or maybe that was WB. Always get those two mixed up. Anyways kind of sad that WB is tearing down their backlot as we speak.
@@ct6852Im not 100% on all the locations for that film. But, I know that the exterior of the courthouse was filmed in Courthouse Square; the same set that was used in opening sequence of Gremlins & most recognisable in the climax of Back To The Future. In fact the cinema Marty crashes into, is the one in which the Gremlins watch Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs.
@@jean-jacquesgoebel5088 I’ve done the tour as well. The War of The Worlds set is in the opposite direction to Colonial Street; it’s located up behind the Bates Motel. But yeah, that 747 fuselage is insane!!!
They moved some of the houses around. The Klopek’s house is the Munsters house. It was placed on Ricky’s side of the street. There was no cul de sac. Walters house was where the stuck the Munsters house.
I worked on this movie at Universal as a caterer, for Continental catering. Such a nice friendly cast. Watching the house blow up was incredible. Tom Hanks was a really nice guy. Great memories.
Do you know if there was ever meant to be an ending where the Klopeks were innocent? (I know your expertise was catering but I'm just wondering if you saw them shoot multiple endings.)
I just seen it the other day. For the 1st time in many years. It's a Classic ,and silly movie with funny performances. Tbh I think that's enough sometimes.
Back when my sister and I were kids, we really liked this movie and the movie Nothing But Trouble for our “weird movie fix.” Great memories. Friday nights were Pizza Hut and we could each rent a movie on VHS. 😊
Fab choice. It's how I fell head over heels in love with Martin Short in my youth. And Meg and Dennis are fantastic together. I think the sisters would love it. Hilarious and touching.
The Burbs is great choice. I think you'll like it. The weird neighborhood is a really niche genre. Another great one is Neighbors(1981) with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. Was John's final film, sadly.
This street, is actually pretty famous, the house where Corey Feldman lives, the guy from The Lost Boys, his house is actually The Munsters house, this street was used in many Twilight Zone episodes, AND Desperate Housewives was shot on that street, this was the neighborhood used for the show.
The Burbs is a treasure that we should all see before we die. I can’t explain how much I love this film! Saw it when it came out and I lived in a Cul-de-sac at the time. These characters were relatable. We had a Walter, a Klopek, a Rumsfeld and even an Art. God I loved that street! ❤
That’s a big Cul de Sac. Our house sat on the corner of one. The first time my little brothers said cul de sac instead of dead end my Pop just looked at my mom & shook his head 😂
I watched this movie dozens of times. You don’t realize you love it until you start quoting it, then you realize how quotable it is. Great black comedy
Us older people grew up with Bruce Dern being a bad guy extra in every TV western series. He was easily recognizable after so many roles. Finally in his late career he got some good person roles and then this comedy role sort of surprised many of us. I loved it.
I first saw Bruce Dern as the amazing villain in John Wayne’s “The Cowboys.” I actually think that made me enjoy him even more in “The ‘Burbs” because I can sometimes hear his villain voice come out.
I used to see him show up as a villain in Western TV shows like Big Valley and Bonanza. He has a very particular look; great actor, and always busy. If you want to see a fine example of his more recent work, check out Nebraska. He was Oscar nominated for that role!
Finally, been requesting this for a year lol. "There go the god damn brownies." Also, "No. It came with the frame."😂. Edit: still waiting for Children of Men😡😂.
The Doctor is played by Henry Gibson, comedian, who was a character actor in many TV sitcoms in the 1960's, then landed a regular position on Rowan and Martin's Laugh In n 1968. When he left he returned to TV character acting and did character work in movies. One of his more famous roles was as the Nazi leader in the Blues Brothers in 1980.
I really think this is Tom Hanks best work. That whole sequence from when he comes out of the exploded house, shuffling down the stairs until he throws himself in the ambulance is just gold. I'm pretty sure I saw this in the theater. Either way I probably watched it 50 times by the time I graduated high school. Corey Feldman was best friends with Corey Haim who was the younger brother in THE LOST BOYS. Haim died years ago now. He'd had the rough time. Feldman had been a child actor going back to being a toddler on the show "Angie" that I remember watching as a little girl. At some point he became obsessed with Michael Jackson and they were actually friends. His acting career kind of dried up and he does music now. He's on tour. There was a point a few years back where he was trying to expose the pedophiles in Hollywood but people really don't want to hear about that stuff. Luckily he survived it. Rumsfeld is played by Bruce Dern. He's a super famous actor too and is still working. He was in a couple of Tarantino movies in the recent past. He's Laura Dern's dad if you know who she is. A forgotten gem is his star turn in NEBRASKA not too long ago.
This is not, by any stretch, Hanks best work. Such a statement is absurd. It isn't his best comedy, his best comedy of the 80s or even his best film of 1989.
@@DaviniaHill Well that's your opinion, man. I've seen most of his films in the theater so it's not like this is the only movie of his I've ever seen. And I do consider myself a connoisseur of great acting. I'm always ready for a movie buff brawl. Come at me. What's his best? Please say something basic like PHILADELPHIA. Sickness always wins but it doesn't mean it's the best.
@@guyperson6417 nah. It was middling. And it certainly wasn't a great performance. Not that I remember anyway. I saw it back then and mostly remember Shelley Long in it. If she was more memorable, I mean...
My husband and I watch this movie every year on Memorial Day weekend. It’s “our movie”. The perfect combo of horror and comedy. It gets better each time ya watch it.
this is one of my favorites of all time, i gotta say when ricky yelled yo rumsfield and he fell off the roof and punched a hole in his own car i couldnt stop laughing best movie of all time
I read that some of the movie was filmed during the 1988 writer's strike, and some of the filming had to be ad-libbed, and that part when Tom throws himself in the ambulance, was acted on the spot by him.
Grew up watching this one. Always had a soft spot for it. "I've never seen that. I've never seen anybody drive their garbage to the street and then bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I've never seen that." 😂
So glad that you both watched The Burbs, it is one of my favorite comedies. As I recall when this came out in the 80s it was sold as a comedy not a scary movie. I knew you both would enjoy it. I think I read somewhere that Hanks thought this was one of his best comedies, however, he was disappointed it didn't get the box office response he thought it would. I think the only other comedy he did after this was A League of Their Own. He was really known as a comedy actor, as I think his only other dramas prior to Philadelphia was Monster and Mazes as well as the second time he was on Family Ties and 80s TV series. He did another comedy with Carrie Fisher called the man with one red shoe, you both might want to watch that sometime in the future. Great review, as always so enjoyable rewatching these great movies with you.
14:38 Greatest meta reference ever in cinematic foreshadowing. Tom Hanks watches Mr Rogers. 30 yrs later he IS Mr Rogers. This classic film has so many levels
Tom hanks is always great personal favourite is probably"the money pit" which is produced by Steven Spielberg and "you've got mail" probably second favourite.
For me the two funniest lines in the movie: Bruce Dern (holding up picture): "Oh, pretty girl... friend of yours?" Hans Klopec: "No it came with the frame." Bruce Dern falling through hole on the porch. "Goddammit, there goes the brownies." This movie is a chuckle- fest and after all these years of seeing it over 30 times IT NEVER GETS OLD!
Truly underrated movie, its one of those feel good comedy classics that goes at a good pace. They're ALL funny in their own way. But the guy that really brings it together is Art played by the late Rick Docummun. His enthusiastic mishaps and accusations just had me rolling. 😂 My favorite scene is when Tom Hanks and Art are daring each other to go to the porch and knock on the door and when they do the 669 becomes 666 and then the bees chase them over to Rumsfelds lawn in a panic. The end of the movie is hilarious too when Hanks gets blown up and throws himself in the ambulance THEN what happens happened abd they were right all along 😂😂
I watched this at age 9 on a sleepover with friends from school. After this 'we' played World Series Baseball and the Olympics Track and Field on the NES. Everyone remember that Nintendo Pad that looked like Twister that you could stomp your feet and run on?
Wow, I'd never heard that, but when I read your comment I could instantly picture it! John Candy delivering those lines would've been epic. Rick Ducommon was funny in his own right, he played a memorable (and convincingly annoying) character.
It’s that classic Joe Dante film with many of his favorites casted Wendy Shaal, Dick Miller, Corey Feldman, and Robert Picardo ( Gremins, Explorers, and Innerspace) Have you seen Explorers?
Fun Fact: Art was played by Rick Ducommun, who also played the helicopter pilot in The Hunt for Red October and Gus in Groundhog Day (one of the 2 drunks from the bowling alley who goes joyriding drunk with Bill Murray). In all 3 movies, he manages to work in that same line, "You know, I figure you as a 'glass is half empty' kind of guy." 🤣🤣🤣
You finally watched one of my favorite comedies of the 80s, second only to Back to the Future. I bet i watch this at least twice a year, it's so quotable and fun.
Rick Ducommun--the neighbour Art (also Gus in Groundhog Day) is another of the band of Canadians who went south in the '80s. He had a respectable career before sadly passing away in 2015.
For more Joe Dante (the Director) excellence try Innerspace and Gremlins 2 (he also did Gremlins but for Gremlins 2 the studio let him do whatever he wanted).
I hope you noticed all the major stars in that movie. The Old bald man was Lucille Balls' Boss from her old 1960s TV show of the same name, "Mr. Mooney" was his name and he was a character. The tall Garbage man was Robert Picardo who played the Doctor on Voyager and is very well known today, the other garbage man has been around since the 60s but was the pawn broker on Gremlins with Phoebe Cates. The family "Doctor" was played by Henry Gibson who was famous as a comic actor on "Laugh In" with Rowan and Martin from the 1960s, he was always a soft spoken character and the older neighbor was played by Bruce Dern, Laura Dern's father, he was in "The Andromeda Strain" early 70s sci fy and "The Cowboys" with John Wayne around 1970 and was seen most recently in the film "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" with Brad Pitt, Leo DiCaprio and Dakota Fanning. And Felmond DOES remind me of a young Patrick Swayze , I thought of it right before Carly mentioned it. He was one of those kids who went through sexual harrassment and abuse as a child actor but is brave to speak out against them. I hope he is in a movie soon.
Gonna have to pause the video I'm currently watching when this starts. A Cassie and Carly team-up on one of the great Cult-Classics in Cinematic History? Irresistible!!! 👍😍😍
SO GLAD you watched this!!!! This movie is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time!! "ALL DAAAAAAAYYY!!!!" "It came with the frame" "Sardine?" "NO!" "God, I love this street" "Kinda like.....gravediggers?" "Maybe" ^^Plus many more are famous among us Burbs fans. There's a Fb group called "The Burbs is the Best Movie Ever," and Cory Danziger (Tom Hanks' son Dave in the movie) is in the group and he sends signed headshots to us fans! I've met Courtney Gains (Hans Klopek) and Bruce Dern (Rumsfield) -- both are awesome guys. Bruce told me his Pinocchio line wasn't in the script, he ad-libbed that! Really glad to see you both laughing at this one.
Always loved this movie. Not enough rectors doing it. Not sure if anyone already commented this but the dog in this movie is the same one that played precious in Silence of the Lambs.
I had no idea what the film was about when I first saw it. It has become one of my all-time favorite. I have made every member of the family watch this movie with me! I have seen this film more times than I have seen Star Wars: A New Hope (53 times in theaters!😳). And I am still rewatching ‘The ‘Burbs’ every time I feel down. I now have the bonus of the memories of Cassie’s reactions to all the funniest moments of this film. I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!
Director Joe Dante best known for the "Gremlins" movies likes to take a fun look at suburbia in his movies. You must take a look at my favorite Dante movie "Matinee" starring John Goodman! It's a great look at life in 1962 with the added thrills of a monster movie premiering at the local town's theater at the same time of the Cuban Missile Crisis !
Omg, this is one of my favorite movies! It’s so stupid it’s funny, I picture what it would be like to live in a neighborhood with these people😂 Beyond entertaining, I’d be hanging with Corey Feldman watching from the porch.
Fun backstory... this is not a real town in "The Burbs". It's a fake 'movie town" or back lot- The 'Burbs was filmed entirely at Universal Studios over ten weeks in the summer of 1988, mainly on the Colonial Street set on the back lot. Not far from it is the Back to the Future "Courthouse Square" (the clock tower) which is also in Gremlins and The Twilight Zone.
@@eurofritz4617 Yea... some are. They took down the Griswald house / neighborhood from Christmas Vacation but that's Warner Bros. Universal is taking stuff down, but not sure what.
This street is still on the Hollywood Universal Studios tour. Its the same street from Leave it to Beaver, The Munsters, Matlock, Desperate Housewives and more
I luv Tom Hanks in this movie!! Citizens arrest... citizens arrest! 😂 This cast was perfect for this type of comedy!! Great to see Carrie Fisher! Good to see Carly back with PiB 🍿! We missed you! Cassie great reaction thanks for watching this! Next time watch Tom Hanks in Volunteers or joe versus the volcano. Great comedy movies. ❤💛
I think it had me fooled with that ending. I'd thought it was a morality tale where things aren't what they seem, though night digging while wearing cloaks in the rain is never a good look. I saw it in the theater as a kid, love it. Super high rewatchability.
I think the movie Philadelphia was the big turning point in Tom Hanks' career. After that, Toy Story is about as light as it got for Hanks. I'm not counting Polar Express: I've never seen it but, judging from the animation, it's clearly a horror story.
Great reaction Cassie as always! I'm so glad you're doing ok after your reaction to IT, like I said I watched it last night and I felt so concerned for you because of how terrified you were! [BIG virtual hug and virtual holds your hand 🤗🤝lol] Have a happy Halloween, love and support, sorry I won't be able to make it tonight for the watch along😭lol! Love and support always to you 🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹🎃
Cassie suggestion for November come down movie. Tom hanks in the underrated Spielberg movie The Terminal. John Williams score as well. 2nd suggestion would be the last of the Kevin Costner sports movies you have yet to see Tin Cup. Both are feel good happy movies that you're sure to love.
MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE with Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher, too, with Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning as two rival CIA-FBI bad guys, with Tom mistakenly stuck in the middle. Lori Singer and The Dress. Jim Belushi and not-so-misplaced jealousy.
