I visited this place when I was 12, I'm now 56 and I still remember the day and place very well. In fact, if I knew then what I know now, about myself, I should have got into archeology but I wasn't an academic so it didn't even cross my mind. This place will always have a place in my memory and the day I travelled from Epsom surrey to Fountains Abbey, not at all for religious reasons but to touch and walk around history. Same with Bodium Castle on another trip but this is the one I remember most. Thanks, this gave me even more info as it wasn't known about the graves and I didn't see the beautiful gardent with the ponds etc. I knew there must have been more than just the old buildings.

"The monks abandoned the abbey nearly five centuries ago.". Really, just decided to up and move on just like that? Methinks the writers have left out a few huge facts, called the dissolution of the monasteries, by the anti-catholic mob formed out of Henry viii's sin?

Because of the staggering £42:50 entrance fee for a family ticket very many British are denied entry to their OWN heritage. The charge is even higher to many other sites. Despite its' title the National Trust does NOT hold such places ' in trust' for the majority of the British.

I DO agree that UK residents should be granted a 50% discount on National Trust sites. Set specific dates for locals, so they aren't battling everyone else and give them a "special ticket" to visit all of the sites within a certain area around where they live. In Victoria, B.C. we have "Be A Tourist In Your Own Town" in January, with a special, one-price ticket for all of the major attractions.

I really enjoyed being shown around these stunning gardens and water features. Mind you I was really surprised when the site caretaker began to explain how when Henry instructed the Abbey be shut down they dismantled it bit by bit. This is the bit I'm not buying though and that's according to our resident expert they even went so far as taking parts of retaining walls etc. There are countless examples online that show buildings damaged exactly like this, all over the World. Liverpools bombed out church in Leece Street being another example.

It's my understanding that the Cistercians were VERY closely tied to the Templars. On the Swedish Island, of Gothenburg, in the Baltic, there were MANY Cistercian monasteries. It is theorized that at least one of their number accompanied a combined Swedish/Norwegian mission to explore North American, in the mid 1300's. And it is also theorized that it was a Cistercian Monk who carved the inscription on the Kensington Stone found in central Minnesota. That monk used the Templar's "hooked X" on that inscription.

its worth noting fountains abbey had over two dozen granges, or monastic farms, surrounding and supporting its operations. it was absolutely NOT a self sufficient prototypical industrial town. it relied HEAVILY on the funds raised by those granges. their records make for fascinating reading.

Literally every place on this earth has a long history, both beautiful and terrible. It just does not all look the same. Consider the millennia that it took for places like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and other natural places to form. Not to mention the oral traditions and stories passed on by the Native Americans. Bottom line, no nation has any reason to be envious of any other nation in that regard. Though, I do agree about bats. They are super cute too. 😍

It was as hugely distressing and devastating for the people who depended on them for employment and spiritual sustenance as it was for the monks, who were the only people who cared for the sick and the poor! I’m really hoping this bit of cotton candy isn’t a sign of change in British documentaries, which have sustained my brain for, lo! these many years, bc not only did I not enjoy this, I HATED it. Is this actually a full episode or some weird truncated edit of an episode? I am finding it very choppy and annoying to watch. It is just Snippets of random info with no real historical narrative about the Abbey that I was expecting to see. Is this what has become of historical documentary making ? I am afraid I am yet to be impressed by anything I have come across on YT that is sourced from this History Hit streaming service :( Oh, and why on earth would they consistently use the term “ when the monks decided to move on” rather than the fact that they were forcibly moved on due to the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII? Seriously?! Are we being all PC so that we don’t scare the kiddies about the violence of the past? Urrgggh. I always feel dumber after watching these HH docos that have been ‘randomly’ marketed across my YT algorithm’preferences’. Time to block the channel and look elsewhere for historical information.

Think that Henry dissolved the monistic houses, he did it not only because of religion, but because the monistries had a wired huge amounts of land that were not taxable. Priests assured people before death that they were assured of a faster trip to heaven, if they left some land or money to the monastery. As it said in the video the monks had land stretching all the way across England. Was probably as much of a reason to get ride of these places to add to his tax base. As time went on, and just before they were closed, there very things going on that were considered to be not very Christian.
