I mean yeah but cultural appropriation is real. It’s not necessarily negative all the time. People appropriate different cultures all the time. Native American culture is something pointed to on the negative side of it because of the stance of Native American tribes against things like mascots for sports teams (see Redksins). The person wubby refutes uses a poor example however there are overwhelming examples of Native Americans speaking out against the continued use of their culture by those outside it and without context. Siding with the Native Americans in saying these things are wrong isn’t necessarily gatekeeping. In turn, Wubby ends up “gatekeeping” by saying you aren’t allowed to speak on someone else’s culture unless you are actually part of their culture.
@@cblams3992 Cultures being shared and imitated should be taken as a source of pride. Why is it that it's only white people who get punished for dressing in the traditional garb of other races? By these standards, black people shouldn't be allowed to wear business suits, and any POC person playing a Roman or European royalty becomes cultural appropriation. Both sides can play this game, and it makes both sides look petty. Just let people dress how they want.

White Americans have made money off of appropriating cultures of their own country's minorities for generations, often straight up stealing and monetizing it within a system where the originators of that culture wouldn't see a dime, and remain second-class citizens. This is why cultural appropriation is so controversial, because there are some cases where there is this kind of historical context, but others where there isn't. I think cultural appropriation can be a form of cultural appreciation, but not always. Not nearly.

@@appleorange754 It's not all about money, though money is a factor. It's about oppressive systems that allowed white people to profit off of minorities' culture in a way that those minorities wouldn't have been able to profit themselves. For example, Jim Crow laws and defacto commercial racism between the civil war and the civil rights movement, and beyond, kept non-black business out of the black community (i.e. white people wouldn't buy from black businesses), but white people would steal their cultural products and make buckets of cash because they had the privilege to do so within that system. You could see this happen from minstrel shows to jazz. Given this history, it shouldn't be surprising why people get uncomfortable about white people appropriating black culture even now. And that's just black culture, there's lots to be said about white people's appropriation of other cultures they've historically oppressed.

The only instance i think cultural appropriation happens in is if the person is perpetuating negative stereotypes, for example if someone dressed up as an Arab person and had a bomb as a prop or if someone was slanting their eyes while dressed as a samurai
