The bus won’t start, but it’s time to hit the road…!!

We are running out of time, even with the extra couple days we have taken to finish things up. Michael has to get the water tanks installed, but before we can hit the road, we have to get the bus to start, which is proving to be quite a challenge, and is adding a lot of stress! We assume it’s the batteries, since they had told Michael when we bought the bus that the batteries weren’t good. So we try charging them, then boosting them, and then finally buy new batteries….. but the bus still doesn’t start, which leads us to suspect maybe the batteries aren’t the issue…

Good evening from USA I’m running very lately because I’m busy all day. I finally get more relaxing from work. You should call mechanics to check the wires for batteries. It’s recommendation to call mechanics near you in Alberta. I know you’re very eagerly to ride the bus to any destinations plus wedding time. See ya next episode 😊

It's not an interlock, otherwise the starter would not engage at all. If the new batteries are fully charged, it's either a bad starter or bad cable connections somewhere. If you have a DC current meter, check how many amps are being pulled right next to the starter while turning the key. You should see hundreds of amps. If not, check your cabling. And, you absolutely can safely grab both terminals of a 12 volt battery with your hands. It WILL NOT shock you. You will not start feeling it until it's greater than approximately 48 volts. This is due to the high impedance of your body. But, as you mentioned, a metal wrench is low impedance, effectively a direct short, and will allow a large amount of current to flow..

Also, I don't know if the solenoid is built onto the starter or separate, but a bad solenoid can also cause this symptom. a bad solenoid is like having a bad connection, if the contractors inside are burned (carbon buildup = resistor). If you have high amperage making it to the starter, either the starter is weak, or something is preventing the motor from spinning, such as hydro lock, or seizure from tight rings or bearings. Considering how little time it's been sitting, it's like not a seizure. Although, it is possible a belt driven accessory could be seized. You can check that by removing the belts and trying to start.

As a school bus driver from minnesota USA… I’m laughing. I would never buy a rusty bus to convert, we bought a Promaster van.

On this video y'all are close to leaving the farm. As long as you can can start the bus. Watching Michael with the lock nuts, the reason Toby is much faster is obvious...its from playing those video games, the hands move so fast. Bethany's arm is bandage free, just in time before the bus leaves for the USA, and she'll be able to easily turn the pages in her 'new' books she was given in the last video. I was expecting that with the new battery and some charging, the bus would finally start, seeing as the video was near the end. But it was not to be...we will have to wait until the next video. I can't wait to see the bus hit the road, and see if they revisit some places like in the older videos, or go to new places, or both. Another great video as usual.

Did you figure it out? Those CAT enginea are known to have starters go bad. But a clunk like that also sounds like something is keeping the engine from actually turning could be fuel got into a cylinder while it say because of a leaking injector or coolant leaked in.
