Finn: I fucking hate butt rock, this shit sucks Also Finn: here's a clip of my favorite band, I saw them in a VFW Basement, they played to a sold out 4 people, here's their song *inaudible noises*
I'm the biggest Breaking Benjamin fan. Been to concerts. But I actually laughed out loud when he said Ben would look like he'd have a desk job.😂 You've made me realize apparently I'm the biggest butt rock fan ever.
@@BorislavVeselinov unfortunately I don't think many of Finns viewers are wrestling fans. I asked him if he'd do a video on wrestling and music and he said he's not a fan of wrestling
Yeah.. this confuses me to see Breaking Ben and TFK in here. Like, both bands entire catalog have a lot to offer and a lot of it is some good ass Alt metal! Hell, BB practically made it's own style of alt metal that was fresh for its time, but now that it's 2023, I guess it's butt rock. Idk, this guy kinda makes me get metal elitist vibes. Don't hate me! Essentially, if it's catchy, it's "butt rock"? Hmm...
@@cheesymcspeedy1 BB were an incredible band to see live back in the day. The vocals and instrumentation at their concerts in the 2000s were just as good as they were on the studio albums.
Me too. Cause you know it is right. Even when it’s super tough , he’s backing his Ford F-150 Sport with Flow Masters and a military brush guard into the smallest and trickiest parking spots with his windows down and radio rock cranked to eleven with those sunglasses everyone had in the early thousands that they sell at the gas station
It’s easier to back a pick-up into a spot that to pull in if there is a parked vehicle adjacent to that spot. Plus it’s a lot safer to pull out in a busy lot vs back out. Got no time for a fender bender in a parking lot.
I had to learn to back into parking spots because it was a work site safety issue. And once you get used to it, it's really not a big deal to do it constantly so you don't get yelled at and made to repark.
I actually think Chevelle is kinda the oddball here; they have "butt rock-esque" moments, but I feel like their music is more honest and not "trying" too hard to be cool. They're definitely my favorite on this list, and I'm starting to think Finn and I don't have a similar taste in music, haha, but I appreciate his commentary.
@@kingexclusivo Nah, I think they're pretty genuine; I didn't mean to imply that EVERY other band on this list in "inauthentic", but I do think the majority in this genre tries too hard.
Adam has a cool voice, thats what made them. Actually, Pete also has a cool voice and thats alao probably what made them, but they are a little more creative in the songwriting department as well.
Chevelle, Seether, and Breaking Benjamin are the kings of butt rock. They have all held up very well compared to their counterparts like Hinder, Buckcherry, and Shinedown.
I love Breaking Benjamin, despite the fact that their lyrics are so repetitive. The sound of it is just so good. They know what they're good at and they stick to it. Also they're the only band of this style that I can take seriously when they write darker. His voice just works for that ominous sound, despite the genre.
Chevelle is entirely too credible to be treated as harshly as Finn did. Out of all these bands they were at least leagues more creative in what they did. Not to mention the clips he chose were not the best representation of them.
I fucking love Chevelle. They're in a league of their own. They bring a unique and creative sound to their music and I've always been a huge admirer of that--it's always made them stand out to me.
I get that, I think chevelle is just generally overlooked as a band. Their most popular songs are good but just not remarkable to most listeners outside of the fanbase. Digging into their discography most of their songs are solid and can be listened to at anytime but yes they are underrated and not even fully butt rock per se, they can be alt metal for sure.
This genre was basically my entire childhood taste, I always thought these were Alt Rock, Hard Rock, Nu Metal and Post-Grunge, but now they’re Butt Rock
They are basiclly Post Grunge Nu Metal is its own thimg and those bands were also massively popular in the same late 90s to 00s time period... I grew up with these bands and still love them
Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace got me through the hellish 11 years I spent growing up in Saudi Arabia as a closeted queer girl. I know they're not the coolest bands and they're (rightfully) classified as buttrock, but they're always gonna have a soft spot in my heart.
Serious question, were you able to easily get those kinds of records as a female in Saudi Arabia? I have no working knowledge of what’s readily available to female Saudis. Ty!
@@rndm7528 it isn't that far fetched honestly , western media is all over the place especially in richer countries , things like WWE and video games got these types of music pretty much everywhere , the authorities can't control every little aspect of life unless you live in north korea lol
Chevelle might be my favorite band of this genre, I don't love this genre, I hate a lot of it, but Chevelle in my opinion is doing something unique and interesting, sometimes borderline progressive.
I would say they're progressive alternative rock. Not progressive like Dream Theater but if you listen to their latest album it really has progressive vibes.
They are definitely the butttrock version of Tool. Earshot was the first "Tool-lite" band to come out and get popular, they predated Chevelle by a year. Then Chevelle comes out and everyone forgot about Earshot.
lmfao, we need more of these. One opinion I have - I think Chevelle doesn’t really fit the butt rock mold anymore and they never really looked the part - it was three kinda nerdy brothers playing rock and a lot of pretty heavy screaming parts in some of their music.
100%, they were kinda buttrock-y when they first came out but it's just crazy to call them that now. They're one of those rare bands that have got better and better with every album release
They are the best of them live as well. When I was in high school I saw Chevelle 3 times and they always did well. Dean is a beast on bass. I also saw 3DG 3 times and they were bad live all 3 times unfortunately. Could have been the festival setups tho but idk. Then they replaced their singer so it made more sense later.
Breaking Benjamin actually puts on an insane show. I had low expectations and bought another band's t-shirt the day I saw them. I bought the wrong shirt.
I deployed with a fuck ton of Army and Marine infantry in 2017 and our 2TB morale hard drive was full of a 75%/25% split between butt rock albums and pirated movies.
@@MosoKaiser I can tell you the military on deployment takes a VERY dim view of porn, it can fuck up your career if youre caught with it. Seen it happen.
@@TheRealityofFake lol.. Finn! what a piece of work this guy is.. This genre of bands, which Finn has labeled "butt rock" has millions of fans and exposure because of its accessibility.. Yet it's heavy and catchy and overall, it's good for Rock because it connects to people.. It's one thing to not like it that much.. but to call it "shit" ?? The bands and genres that Finn loves, nobody has ever heard of .. and when he plays examples or shows videos of these bands, the music is true shit in every way.. takes no talent to create and is completely unknown.. as it should be. It's shitty garage rock from punks.. basically noisy., talentless and thrown together and has nobody listening to it.. I'd like to see one of Finn's favorite bands attempt to write music that connects to anyone other than some teenage punks.. These "butt rock" bands are big time, signed bands that have been around for a long time. Many of them have toured with huge legacy acts. The first time I saw Shinedown was with VH on a world tour. These bands have sold millions of albums and have worldwide fans.. it's like Finn thinks that if something is popular that it automatically sucks.. This, along with Finn's obsession with clothing makes me drop comments on his videos like this.. Finn is not the arbiter of what's "cool" in the Rock genre.. He only pretends to be. The fact that he disses these bands shows that he is out to lunch.. and.. with all that said.. I'm not even a fan of any of these bands.. But when I check in on them and hear what they are putting out.. I respect it.. It's heavy, it's catchy, the production is great.. I mean.. go and listen to Breaking Benjamin's last album.. It's badass in every way! Heavy, fresh, complex.. everything you want a band to be.. and.. accessible
The fact that you guys use the term “butt rock” to describe this music is laughable. Music is great, badass and somehow bands like Linkin Park aren’t included in this when they’re pretty much the same thing.
You say "butt rock sucks" and I will personally contest this if no one else does. I love punk and metal but sometimes I just wanna rock out and not think about my music taste nor my hairline. All jokes aside, I love this video and I appreciate that you appreciate Godsmack, keep up the great work Finn.
Same for me. Sometimes I don't want to Cradle of Filth, Amon Amarth or anything like that and just want to chill. Plus my wife likes it so get brownie points.
I definitely bump chevelle up in my tier list, I genuinely really like this band. Chat definitely choose wrong song for finn to react, they have harder songs that he might've liked
This is the kind of content I come to your channel for. Your obsession with butt rock fashion has spread to me not gonna lie. I’ve definitely payed a lot more attention to wrist accessories when I see band photos now.
I must admit, I am infatuated by that song they did for Halo 2, Blow Me Away. I have already completed Halo 3, Halo ODST and Halo Reach as a gamer, especially an FPS gamer and I have completed roughly a score of FPS games minimum.
I listen to death metal all day every day and it’s my favorite type of music by a long shot, but I will champion Breaking Benjamin until the day I’m toasted into ashes. They’re catchy and fun as hell to listen to. They’re the easiest rock music to put on in the car with a mix of people who don’t like my taste in metal.
It shouldn’t be called that way because they’re not different to bands like Linkin Park or Papa Roach. It’s pretty much hard rock from the 2000s. The term butt rock makes it seem like it’s bad music
“Yahrling in the grass” and “Butt Rockin on the beach” are some of the funniest phrases I’ve heard lol although you’ve got tons of great one liners lol love the channel Finn!
We did the same thing. Even managed to do it in our Bradley as well. My BC and driver were black dudes so our music was always gangsta rap and Slayer lol. Blew their minds when I showed them Body Count and that Ice T played metal lol
I unabashedly love Godsmack. Probably because they're the first non-"classic rock"/modern-ish rock/metal band I discovered. All of the band members are super talented, too. 😃 And Breaking Benjamin is amazing, especially live. Both Godsmack and Breaking Benjamin have actually continued to grow and make better music.
Godsmack has gotten decidedly more mellow in my opinion over the years. Bulletproof doesn’t hold a candle to their old stuff like I Stand Alone. Still a great band tho I wish them the best
Godsmacks arguably in my top 5 without question, sure they changed there sound and went in the same lane as Shinedown/Theory but it’s albums like there debut/awake/faceless that keeps me going back. Breaking Benjamin imo is one band that never switched up or ‘souled out’ as most people quote it. You listen to dark before dawn/ember and still sound like something recorded from 2002-2004 that’s how ahead they are. This might be wrong comparison but far as consistency/longevity goes I’d put them in the Linkin Park of 2022 category
I can admit I’ve never really been into Godsmack. I can remember when they were a local band getting pushed by WAAF seeing them at early shows. Couldn’t believe it when they were up on the bill at Woodstock. After seeing them at their millennium show New Years night 99 I think I maybe saw them twice after that.
Trevor McNevan is musically one of the smartest people no one has heard of, he's the reason I love TFK so much. He's also one of the coolest guys you will ever meet
Absolutely! I find it crazy how popular his side project FM Static was and still is. Most bands would kill to have that many listeners and they’re just like we do this sometimes on the side lol. Always had a soft spot for TFK and any of Trevor’s music
@@jakemolisani4771 I swear anything he touches musically turns to gold lol every song he is a guest in is an awesome song even if it's a band I don't normally like
You hit me with the 1-2 punch with bedazzled and rhinestone jeans, but then you gave the fatal blow of backing into parking spots lolololololol I'm actually ded.
Chevelle is a really awesome band and definitely not a butt rock band they are more progressive/tool like, never heard anyone think they're a butt rock band
I see Breaking Benjamin as more wasted talent. Burnley is a fantastic vocalist but they make the most aggressively uninspired music out there. Every album sounds exactly the same, no experimentation, all the songs are almost exactly 3:30 long, the lyrics are just a bunch of vague angsty words strung together in a way that's not even grammatically correct half the time. I used to listen to them a lot when I was a teenager but then when I got older they started to sound cringey and silly. I can get why people like them, and I do think they're overall good musicians, but sometimes you just want more than they can offer.
Dependinf on what you mean by hard, they definitely do. Both lyrically and musically. The clincher has some of my favorite drop D guitars and screaming in the genre
A Butt Rock tier list isn't complete without Seether, Saliva, and Evanescence. Some people consider Disturbed and Drowning Pool more nu-metal, but I consider them Butt Rock.
I feel like Puddle Of Mudd were done a bit dirty here, Say what you will about their music (I personally enjoy a couple of their albums + singles from the ones I don't enjoy as much). But their success during their peak of popularity was not even in the same ballpark as any of these other bands. Their major label debut, Come Clean sold over 5 million copies worldwide, And every single off of that album charted in the top 20 of whatever chart they were on, Blurry was one of the biggest rock hits of the 2000's, She Hates Me ranked high on both mainstream rock and the hot 100, Drift and Die was the #1 mainstream rock song for 6 weeks straight, And Control got to #3 on mainstream rock. Now granted, POM's popularity did fade in the 2010's due to Wes' antics and whatnot, But if we're going by prime success numbers (Which I know we aren't), Then POM should be at the very least B tier, Because their popularity more so rivaled Creed and Nickelback than it did Godsmack and Three Days Grace. Though I get it however since their popularity wasn't sustainable in comparison. That said, I have no idea how Shinedown and Three Days Grace didn't get S tier, Since they both are tied for having the most #1's in mainstream rock history. And are still churning out successful singles to this day. The rest of this I agree with though, For as good as Chevelle is admittedly most people only know The Red and Send The Pain Below, So ranking them higher than C doesn't make much sense going by that metric.
"You guys are nerds and I'm a Chad, so we won't see eye to eye." That's the most alpha thing I've ever heard. I'm happy to line up behind you and follow your lead, sir. Teach me your ways.
@@Lucasryan I looked it up and found nothing heartstring tugging. Dude hit a car and gave a girl brain damage while blaming..the design of the road? Then he settled for $3.3M. Where's the "good guy" part? Also, he frequently airs his political views-like how Covid would magically disappear if Trump lost the election and how Bernie is evil because he supposedly wants to raise income tax to 52% on everyone making >$29K (LMAO)-while also seeing fit to say that celebrities and musicians should stop talking politics. The dude is a douchebag. Not necessarily a bigger douchebag than the average buttrocker, but still a douchebag.
Hilarious but I gotta disagree with Shinedown, they’re a solid A tier band. They’re one of the most commercially successful bands ever, most #1 singles ever, something like that
I don't care what anyone says shinedown is one of my top bands and they've gotten pretty experimental on their last 3 albums, in my opinion they haven't written a single bad song
I agree, Shinedown is awesome! Love Diamond Eyes, Fly From the Inside, Leave a Whisper, really most of their early stuff and some of their ladder stuff.
@@kingexclusivo Their first album is pretty butt rock-y. One X and Life Starts Now are a little different. And Transit of Venus is okay. But one thing I will say is that they have a certain sound. Whether it be guitar tone or Adam's singing, they may be butt rock but they have a specific sound to them.
They're my favorite band of all time. I bumped them a lot during middle and high school. I moved on to metal (anything from classic heavy metal to death metal to black metal) and I still love them. The song he played is called Rawkfist and it's from their album Phenomenon. Great starting point.
My mom's favorite bands are Godsmack and Disturbed, she loves Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace as well. With a black dad, If it wasn't for her and butt rock I never would've gotten into metal music.
I saw breaking benjamin in Wisconsin one time and there was a lot of chad energy in the crowd, multiple fist fights broke out in and around the pit throughout the set, I saw one dude get straight up KOd. I wouldn't have guessed it either but BB is definitely for chads.
I feel like Chevelle is not butt rock, way too creative and progressive, easily better than all the other bands on this list imho. Honestly more Tool-esque than anything. They are one of the few on this list actually still going pretty strong too.
Godsmack has put on a killer live show both times I’ve seen them. I never really listen to them anymore but if they’re in town, I’ll happily go see them. Sully is an electric frontman and when they do the dueling drums it’s a blast to watch. The crowd has also been the exact stereotypes Finn talks about every time, which makes me smile lol
Yes! I requested this tier list…though my request might have come in after you uploaded it. Do a ska ranking list. Clearly you don’t have to like the genre to rank them. I’d like to see which ska punk bands you hold higher than others. “Entertain me, Clown!!!!” (Being ironic, not shitty)
You like what you like! No shame. Unless we catch you in a TJ Maxx suit that your wife helped you pick out, complete lack of wrist accessories, playing a PRS SE at Wilbert's Food & Music on a Tuesday.
I admittedly have a soft spot for all these bands but for Chevelle being a radio alt/nu metal band they we’re actually really heavy at times and had some great songs.
I regret to say this but....I occasionally do enjoy some butt rock lol I'm a punk/pop punk fan mostly and I enjoy all types of music dating all the way back to the 50's. With that being said, I'll jam out to some Nickelback, Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin! Corny music but sometimes it's just fun lol
People that actively hate Butt Rock are honestly just miserable Elitists. If you are the kind of person that complains about the music on modern Rock stations, and feels the need to "correct" people on what's "Metal"; you are whom I am referring to lmao I'm honestly sick of how much "Butt-Rock" gets trashed, especially when back in the day like 10-20 years ago, they were pretty universally loved. It seems like within the last five years or so, people have just become SUCH cry babies when it comes to music. It's OK to enjoy music like this.
The fifteen year old version of myself is not upset I'm investing 30 minutes for a Butt Rock video, just disappointed. I only watch them to support Finn and his content. I swear! Lol! 🤣😜
These tier lists are definitely my favorite content of yours. You could literally do one of these for anything (even non-music lol) and I would watch it. Also, shout out to you for uploading stream highlights that are on the level of other folks’ actual videos Love to see it!
I've always called this stuff, "Stripper Rock." I used to DJ in a strip club late 90's early 2000's and this the stuff dancers asked for, all the damn time.
Hey i appreciate that TFK is in this list. Probably my favorite band growing up. Wish they had a bigger following. Idk call me crazy but i really did love their music
All of these have an argument for being buttrock (and I love most of them), except for Chevelle. I've never once thought they sound the way they do to be cool, edgy or tough. I wouldn't call them super commercial either, as being palatable isn't the same as being commercial. They've got a killer tone and they can write a good riff. The main riff of Humanoid is one of my favorites ever.
I would put money on the origin of the name Godsmack being that one of them heard someone say "gobsmacked" and they were like "...almost onto something"
Haha, you have stumbled on two Shinedown ballads, too bad! I am by no means a butrock fan, but I really like and respect Shinedown, albeit only their later material. Especially with the Attention Attention from 2018 I think they have hit upon their own sound. Since you say you enjoy pop music, this might be as palatable as Shinedown gets for you, especially the production. On many tracks it flirts with pop, but in its own unique way, for example on Darkside (the vibe change in the chorus), Black soul or Get up (pure pop song). Plus, the whole album is about addiction and depression, some of the songs the singer wrote the lyrics especially to prop up the bassist (who actually handled much of the production here, which is cool). So yeah, while Shinedown are by no means my favourite band, I think they are understandably but somewhat incorrectly lumped in with the faceless butrock pack. Idk, they seem to be doing their own thing nowadays, also pissed off a lot of fans of their older butrock days
