The cabin in the woods is one of the most unique and creative horror movies I've ever seen. Albeit I've only seen 4 horror movies, but I stand by it and I will die on this hill. This was amazing!

This the newest video in my Editor Reacts to series. Today I am watching and reacting to The Cabin in the Woods for the first time.
Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods.
The Cabin in the Woods is a 2012 American horror comedy film directed by Drew Goddard in his directorial debut, produced by Joss Whedon, and written by Whedon and Goddard.[4] It stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford. The plot follows a group of college students who retreat to a remote forest cabin where they fall victim to a variety of monsters while technicians manipulate events from an underground facility.
Goddard and Whedon, having worked together previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, wrote the screenplay in three days,[5] describing it as an attempt to "revitalize" the slasher film genre and as a critical satire on torture porn. The special effects, monster costumes, special makeup, and prosthetic makeup for the film were done by AFX Studio.[6] Filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia from March to May 2009 on an estimated budget of $30 million.
The film was originally slated for release on February 5, 2010, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists, but was indefinitely shelved due to financial difficulties. In 2011, Lionsgate picked up the distribution rights. The film premiered in December 2011 at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon film festival in Austin, Texas and was released in the United States on April 13, 2012, grossing over $66 million worldwide. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its screenplay, tone, and performances.
Kristen Connolly as Dana Polk, a college student designated as "The Virgin"
Chris Hemsworth as Curt Vaughan, a sociology major and football jock, designated as "The Athlete"
Anna Hutchison as Jules Louden, a pre-medical college student and Curt's girlfriend, designated as "The Whore"
Fran Kranz as Marty Mikalski, a college student designated as "The Fool"
Jesse Williams as Holden McCrea, Curt's football teammate, designated as "The Scholar"
Richard Jenkins as Gary Sitterson, Facility technician
Bradley Whitford as Steve Hadley, Facility technician
Brian J. White as Daniel Truman, the Facility's control room security officer
Amy Acker as Wendy Lin, Facility technician
Sigourney Weaver as The Director, the unnamed leader of the Facility
Tim de Zarn as Mordecai
Jodelle Ferland as Patience Buckner
Dan Payne as Mathew Buckner
Dan Shea as Father Buckner
Tom Lenk as Ronald the Intern, the Facility's intern

The "I learned it from watching you" line is a joke based on a ridiculous old Anti-Drug PSA, in the which the father gets angry about weed found in the son's room, and he demands to know "who taught you about this stuff?" and the kid yells "it was from you dad - I learned it from watching you!"

Love watching the younger generations be clueless. Like the time a young music artist was really nice to give "that Paul McCartney guy" a chance to show his music onstage.

@@scottstephens5443 It is interesting to see how different the cultural references are between generations. There does seem to be more of a gap between Gen Z and older generations then there was between my generation (I am baby Gen X) and Boomers. I suspect that's because we had fewer choices, and often the only option was to watch one of 5 channels on the one tv in the house with your parents, or listen to the oldies radio station in the car with your mom, so we consumed much of the same media. However, I doubt that's the reason Lexi isn't familiar with that commercial, it's moreso that it's unlikely a late 80s American PSA was aired on Hungarian television in the 2000s!

I think any fan that know the Whedonverse, sort of knew what style we were in for. As in humour, horror, pop references, juxtapositions, etc. So it was a little more digestable. Just a little more horrory.

Marty is "The Fool" , but it isn't as obvious or negative as it sounds. The Fool in the Tarot and other symbologies refers to someone who combines foolishness or recklessness with insight or a holy wisdom. Marty fits his stereotype the best. He isn't just a dumb burnout.
@mikewaters2126
@mikewaters2126 5 месяцев назад
Marty doesn't really fit it at all. None of them fit their archetypes. Jules is a much better match for the fool. I don't think tarot really applies here, because the archetypes come purely from roles in generic horror movies, and the fools in those doesn't really have much to them other than clownishness.
@adgato75
@adgato75 5 месяцев назад
@@mikewaters2126 Marty fits the fool perfectly. As i said, he fits the Tarot archetype of the Fool. The Fool may act silly, but his jokes hide perception and wisdom, even if it isn't applied well. By standing outside and observing, the fool sees and understands more, but is rarely listened to. This is the occult / Jungian C.O. meaning of the Fool.

This movie is Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's love letter to horror. The cellar door, the cabin, and the "evil molesting tree" are from Evil Dead. The puzzle box guy is from Hellraiser. The Japanese girl is from The Ring. They took the tropes of horror, as explained by Randy in Scream, and gave them a purpose, and used all the monsters to ever exist as tools for that purpose. People getting punished for their transgressions is as old as storytelling gets, fucked up fairy tales where people die because a kid lied about a wolf too much, or Lot's unnamed wife turning into salt for looking where she wasn't supposed to. When God abandons you for your bad choices, the wicked win, or some such nonsense. Thankfully, horror has kind of shifted away from this kind of warped karma and has been telling more stories about characters and personal stakes. Even when someone does wrong, it's the kind of wrong that's harmful to others, not the old world sins that no one cares about like having consensual sex or drinking alcohol. This movie was the best sendoff the old classic, righteous morality tales could get, though.

Remember when in BtVS 5x02, Buffy dusted one of Harmony's minions with a wooden unicorn ? Well, it seems that Whedon and Goddard have finally been able to "give life" to that image with this movie. Plus there's an actor from that episode in this movie too (with small roles in both), but with whom you'll gonna get acquainted soon.

Actor Fran Kranz who played Marty had gotten seriously jacked for a previous role. When Joss Whedon cast him he was like "Uh, we're going to have to cover you up with some baggy clothing. Because you're playing a lazy stoner, but you look like a Navy Seal."

Yes she wasn't a virgin in "real life" but she was (or rather she got that part) once they drove through the tunnel which is when the cabin part starts. Cannot see that anyone have mentioned this yet but understanding the plot comes once you realize that the sleeping evil that awakes at the end is us the audience, the ones that demand that horror movies must contains these tropes.

Season 4 .. episode 21 (Primeval) .. Buffy the Vampire Slayer .. the scene in this movie where all the Monsters are set free is just like when the Monsters are set free to attack "The Initiative", but this movie was a lot more bloody than Buffy was. You can see Joss Whedon's name written all over this scene.

I don’t know if already mentioned or you knew it, but it’s written and produced by Josh Weddon, creator of Buffy :) It really subvert the expectations of classic horror movies, since it starts like a usual horror movie. Some dumb kids, go into the woods in the middle of nowhere, a creepy gas station worker and stereotypical characters, but no, it turns into a wild trip.

Power reroute indeed was courtesy of Marty. He was upstairs, literally. The whole facility is underground. Part of the idea in this movie is that all those guys don't fit into their assigned roles. Curt aka Thor is supposed to be the Athlete, or, as you said, the Jock, but he is smart and a good student; in the beginning he advises Dana to try a different textbook, which covers the same topic, but better. Holden (the Scholar) is wearing glasses, but is quite fit physically; he is introduced when he catches a ball, and I think there is a mention that his scholarship is sponsored by a sports team. Marty (the Fool) is both smart and physically fit, despite being a stoner. Jules (the Whore) is, perhaps, quite aware of her sexuality, but she is in a stable relationship and only has sex with her boyfriend; and, judging by her taking care of supplies, she is more of a Team Mom. And Dana (the Virgin) is not a virgin.

Ok, but this got me thinking, what if Marty was our actual final girl? Since Dana was under the influence of the drugs she could've passed for a fool, and like Lexi said, "she's not a virgin, what if Marty was the virgin and they messed up?" If they work with what they have, why not offer an actual virgin, even if it's a guy? xDD If that had been the case, chances are the world would have survived. Even if things played the same way, I think it's more likely she would have pulled the trigger to end her own life rather than Marty's. Just the flippity floppity irony of them sorta breaking the stereotype (even further) yet still making it work xD I doubt any of them were actual virgins tho, and Dana's demeanor certainly embodied the trope better, but what a fun "what if" scenario, thanks!

I know you were talking about what if Dana isn't a virgin & the clip of Dana implying she's not with Sigourney Weaver playing the director admitting they work with what they have got cut out for copyright reasons but you do have a point about roles. Admittedly they could have replaced virgin with the "final girl" role cause that's what it is, the optional death after the others are killed off. I've seen some past comments in other reaction videos to this movie(cause I have nothing better going on & like seeing people react to things) were they point out these people don't exactly follow the roles they were given. I forgot the names but technically the scholar guy fits the athlete due to that incident with the ball threw the window. Whoever Chris plays(his name was Curt?) is more of a scholar due to Marty mentioning he's on full academic scholarship & I hate to say this but technically Dana is the whore due to sleeping with her teacher. While Marty technically fits the fool(especially from a tarot card meaning) he fits as the final girl maybe & might possibly be a virgin since he never slept with Jules when they had a thing together.(I might be off) The people behind the group becoming sacrifices has done this so many times that they're use to it & just go for anyone they think on the surface fits the roles while using every trick they can to make these people fit their roles cause they need to follow horror movie tropes for the ancients/the people watching this movie. I've kinda gotten lost & I know very well this is not what you meant but the point is that if you look more into things past the surface you realize they aren't actually the roles the company made them play especially with Marty pointing some of this out.
