My sister and I saw the call is Southern California probably 20 years ago now. Small venue, great show and after the show, Michael came up to the bar and had a drink with us and he was so nice, friendly, genuine, and funny. I’m 67 now and will not and have not ever forgotten that evening
I was in a local band in the Philly area called Hidden Faces. One of my best memories was opening for The Call at the 23 East Cabaret in Ardmore on November 2, 1990
I remember seeing the video of The walls came down in the eighties. I was hooked. No air play in my home area. I knew all the local stations were in a vacuum. Thank God I found them a few years ago. At seventy three I still love their music.
Micheal Been was the greatest writer, singer, musician. I made friends with him and Dan Shields his manager that was with U2. Such great people! So sad Micheal has left us. Such a great talent and so inspired the religion that I love. His music is timeless and his message for ever. Hope you have met St. Peter Michael, God and all the Angels, Bless you my friend 🙏❤️
As a Radio DJ at the time, I put them in HEAVY rotation and got great reception from our listeners at the time, and NEVER understood why they didn't take off nationally. Great stuff that STILL stands the test of time. Thank you for posting the video, great memories.
@@pmdl23 Hmm. Yeah I wondered about that, weren't they like a Chiristian band or some one in the band was a Christian or something along those lines??? And the song is about God anyway???
Mind boggling that they didn't take off. It's not as if they had one good song or even album and were done. They were consistently good for several albums. The music fit with the times but was unique in it's own way. I always wonder if the religiosity was the issue but it's not like they pushed it in any way.
Saw them in unknown club 1987 downtown Houston, TX. 80 people there including bar staff. The CALL rocked the house for 2hrs. The place went nuts and was filled with charged vibes from this pulsing rock and roll, great band, sorely missed in today's music mush. Oh, did I say GREAT BAND.
This song and I Still Believe got me through a very rough 1986. I worked for a college radio station and that same year I got to meet The Call and interview them when they played at Central Michigan. Serendipity at it's finest.
I was raised in the 60s and 70s in an evangelical church. I walked awa from that life and have been an atheist for 35 years. However, Michael Been is one of the most influential songwriters to me. His obvious faith and love of humanity is inspiring. I don’t have believe what he does to admire how he lived his life.
Truly.....a great band......I haven't listened to them in years....THIS song brought back such great memories, and made me realize they WERE one of the most under-rated bands....ever.
This song's driving bass line and haunting melody was playing inside my head, for almost 29 years. However, I not heard it since being played on KROQ-FM and College Radio, in 1987. I had no idea(or forgot) who wrote this....until I got Shazam to ID them finally playing on my radio yesterday! The Call rightfully deserved REM's absurd successes, as they were true pioneers of Politically-charged, Alternative Rock. Way under-rated....RIP Michael Been.
Totally agree... there are just those songs that resonate in your head for years and years..... this band had nothing but great songs! Soooooo underrated.
Michael Been... A monumental loss. As a bass player, I looked at his fretless playing nothing short of amazing. And keeping it all together, just fantastic.
You don't have to believe in a God to believe in a power. The songs The Call created inspired a belief in something, a power, an energy. Each of us has to figure it out for ourselves. What a vocal powerhouse!
Gail Butler I met the lead singer, Mike Bean??? Been too long ago. They opened for Simple Minds at the Fox in St. Louis. The Call blew them out of the water!
Just discovered this a few hours ago, here in Lima-Perú. We have this radio station, they play mostly rock and the thing is that I really dont listen to radio almost never but today granny turned it on and after a couple of songs this came up...I instantly LOVED IT. Such a shame to find out the lead singer is no longer with us....I'm an 80's child and never heard of them...Ever. I will check their music out for sure.
Listen to "Let the day begin " "The walls came down" " I still believe" and look for a version of "I still believe" by Robert Been, Michael's son. It is live at The Troubadour"... You're welcome
The Call were superb in concert as well. I love the fact that Michael and the band spread The Word without being dogmatic Evangelicals. Their music stood on its own merits and Michael was a kind, warm-hearted, talented human being.
Raise me up Keep that promise that you made Wake me up Keep that promise that you made I think of you (Everywhere I go) I think of you (Everywhere I go) I look for you (Everywhere I go) I need you (Everywhere I, everywhere I go) Straight has curve Smiles, eyes, powers to confound me I lose my nerve Your voice, it echoes all around me I think of you (Everywhere I go) I think of you (Everywhere I go) I look for you everywhere (Everywhere I go) I must have you (Everywhere I, everywhere I, everywhere I go) Ease me down Keep that promise that you made to me Take my hand My mind reels, all my senses rise I think of you (Everywhere I go) Lord, I think of you (Everywhere I go) I look for you (Everywhere I go) I need you (Everywhere I go) Lord, I need you everywhere I go (Everywhere I go) I look for you everywhere (Everywhere I go) I need you (Everywhere I go) I must have you (Everywhere I, everywhere I, everywhere I) (Everywhere I) Everywhere I go, go
Back in the day when they were around, I only knew their one big hit. ( Though I did see them at my university around nineteen eighty six) But thanks to RU-vid, I'm discovering their backlog. Man the 80s were one of the greatest times to be alive. I'm so proud of my generation x. Great music like this is dead today. So eighties, so quality. Rest in peace lead singer guy.
Absolutely one of the best of that era. They stood out; did some things differently. They had their own distinctive sound and produced a string of excellent songs that even today are better than much of what you hear on the radio.
I was lucky enough to see these guys live at the Bayou in DC in the mid-80s, up close. I liked the Call but after I saw them, I loved the Call. Michael Been (RIP), just an amazing voice. Better live than recorded! The only other band that I can personally attest to that distinction is Cheap Trick.
Robert Winters nope I tend to disagree with you the call was never underrated the reason why people say that is because there music was considered Christian music which back in the 80,s was like rap music it was stereotyped still the call received a lot of attention on mtv and radio.
Interesting never knew that. I saw this band open for simple minds in Berkeley California 1985 they were awesome. Yup still have the record followed by the cd and then digitally into iTunes.
Whenever these guys came to southern Calif., I would follow them from San Diego to Santa Barbara and every show in-between, such an amazing spiritual ENERGY at each show. Michael would just frikkin'' ATTACK that fretless bass! Appropriate that they would open their tribute show to Michael @ the Troubadour in LA (with his son Robert) with this song. Yeah, I made sure to be at that one too.
The reason why the call and so many other groups were underrated because back in the 80.s music was divided into categories unfortunately bands like the call were considered underground alternative but thanks to MTV groups like the call the alarm or Rem got crossover success
One of the greatest band of all time... Michael Been (god bless his soul) and his music, was a big inspiration in my life. Big fat salute to The Call and Michael.
i absolutely LOVE this combination of high tempo drums and a punchy baseline, idk if there is a name for it, but i just love the sound! a lot of songs in the 1980s used it
Hey Jobuneedsarefill01 - agree - The Call is an amazing band. Not nearly as high on the 80s radar as they deserve. The nice thing about youtube is that it offers great bands from back in the day exposure to new generations of music fans. Thanks for posting!
This is such a great song that never gets old. I seen these guys in San Diego back in 80's. I was a hard rocker playing guitar in a band like Metallica and I still loved this band.
One of the best shows I was able to experience back in the day. Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ. I don't remember what year but it was an incredible performance.
One of the best concerts I've ever been to was when The Call came to a little coffee shop in my town, probably ten years ago. Small set, nothing flashy, but primo musicianship!
Heard this song on my local radio station yesterday and it brought back so many memories. Loved this song when I first hear it in 86 and still holds up today. Beautiful gem that I kind of lost track of. Thank you CD 102.5 in Columbus Ohio for reminding me how awesome this song and this band is. Much love!!
Bought "Reconciled" on vinyl in 1986, somehow forgot about it and just recently started playing and recording my vinyl after a 28 year hiatus.. Played "Reconciled" and now I'm on a buying binge of The Call. Did they have any weak tracks? Haven't found one yet.. RIP Michael Been.
I love this song! It's my favorite. It has bonded my and the love of my life and the Call forever! Thank you Michael for saying the things I never had the courage to say to the one I love...
In Belgium we only knew the song "I still believe". Bought a couple of CDs if them in the meanwhile, they are one of my favorite bands now. To bad they didn't get the credit they deserved.
My first show EVER!!!! I was 11 in 89 at the Coachouse in Capistrano. I shook Micael Been's hand as he was walking off stage. One the best shows I've been to till this day.
forgot about this song and band... today I'm in an airport eating in a cafe and it's playing in the overhead speakers! So glad to become reacquainted! Awesome song!
Saw them at Auburn University. Man were they loud & great. Let the day begin. Just wow. Sorry to hear of Michael's death. It's been 35 years since I saw them. Wondered why they never hit it big.
''Riconciled'', I remember it very well 'cause I used to love it in the 80's, was and is still an extraordinary album, one of the flags of our New Wave era.
When I was young I saw this song as talking about obsessive love. Now I realize the song is about Mike Been's religious experience and his reverence towards God. The song works both ways which is why it's great.
It is true that this song should have been a smash hit pouring out of every car speaker all across America. The fact that it wasn't just demonstrates how what is a hit and what is not many times has very little to do with the quality of the music, but probably more in a label's promotion of the music.
Still a great band! Saw them in concert back in early 80’s. Michael Been was awesome in person. His son did a great tribute to his father after he passed away.
i have been waiting 2 hear this band agian for 30 yrs.!!!!!!!!!! they rock for Christians/most don't know it/but they were 1 of the 1st. it was my 3rd shift motavation 2 get the crew & production out back then!!!!!!!!!! for ALL AGES!!!
