The call to learn | Clifford Stoll

www.ted.com Clifford Stoll could talk about the atmosphere of Jupiter. Or hunting KGB hackers. Or Klein bottles, computers in classrooms, the future. But he's not going to. Which is fine, because it would be criminal to confine a man with interests as multifarious as Stoll's to give a talk on any one topic. Instead, he simply captivates his audience with a wildly energetic sprinkling of anecdotes, observations, asides -- and even a science experiment. After all, by his own definition, he's a scientist: "Once I do something, I want to do something else."

This man was mentored by the designer of some of the most famous musical instruments of the 20th century, got a PhD in astronomy, chased down and caught a Russian Hacker in the middle of the cold war, then retired to teach middle schoolers, get his ham radio licence, and sell klein bottles out of his basement. Cliff Stoll might have the most interesting life out of any human on Earth

Early 90's as a kid i was hooked on his book "The Cuckoos egg". When i got myself my first internet connection as a 17 year old 1997something one of the first things i did was sending Cliff an actual email. Can you imagine directly contacting your favorite AUTHOR? Wow. The power of the Internet. I sent him a mail asking if he could sign a book. I asked him were to ship it to and provided my overseas address so he could tell me the cost for him to send it back to me after he signed it. I would include dollar bills in the package, so i proposed. I didnt receive an answer. And stopped expecting one 3 weeks later. Then, four weeks later, there was a letter in my snailmailbox that a package was waiting for me at the post office: it was a signed fresh copy of Cliff's book!

Most people genuinely love anything coming from the mouth of someone who's truly enthralled with what they're talking about. Adults usually think this level of excitement is for children so they won't allow themselves to show it, yet they're drawn to people that do. More people should be honest about their excitement, and more people should find something to be excited about.

Cliff Stoll continues to live a life that would seem unrealistic if we watched it in a movie. Something so fantastic and endlessly complex, that it could only be contrived by an extremely creative mind. But Cliff Stoll lives the life of the creative-minded. Of someone who is never content to be the master of just one subject; of becoming an expert on just one field. Cliff Stoll's life is the end result of someone who never stops questioning, never stops learning and never stops bettering themself in their understanding of the world. I genuinely believe Cliff Stoll extols the best of what humanity is and can be and he deserves nothing less than universal accolade.

IARRCSim I choose to measure a speech on the quality of its content, not the structural mechanics of it. By that measure, it is a good speech. The reason Cliff is so captivating is because he doesn't fit the mold. He is an entertaining and energetic presenter who obviously doesn't care about constraining himself to the standard norms of such a presentation. I understand that it might be frustrating to listen to him if you don't already have a strong background knowledge in all the different topics he mentions in rapid succession. His lecture is a little more disconnected than we are used to and isn't structured in the typical fashion, but that doesn't equate to a "bad speech."

it really, hurts, my only form of education is a computer, always has been, specifically youtube. but if it wasn't for a computer, i wouldnt of ever of understood science or math, school wasnt a place of learning for me, it was a place of deadlines and 'ur not good enough if you dont understand this concept in 4 weeks' sorta bullshit. school never gives enough time to the small minority of students who really need it. and if you use a computer in the right way, you can achieve and learn so much more (and for free) than what school would teach you (and in your own time so you have much more needed amounts of time to understand things you just cant grasp yet). however, one on one interaction with someone who knows this is something irreplaceable. I'm trying to self educate myself so many math and science subjects (found free lectures on youtube and watching them at my own comfortable pace, its more of a hobby for me) but what sucks is that my year 12 subjects are getting in the way of what i want to do properly. but I'll eventually get there. once i learn these concepts perhaps i can then go into a school with confidence and should be able to go through it without feeling like I'm too dumb or slow, cus i already know it. thanks computer, and thank you internet.

Finally - a truly authentic knowlege seeker and teacher! How courageous, genuine, enlightening, and non-self-serving. Clearly it would be an honour for others for others to share their passions- merely to benefit others, as Clifford Stoll does.

This is the best way to teach kids, knowledge delivered with fun, enthusiasm and some slapstick humor. We SERIOUSLY need more teachers like you.

I've often wondered what the internet would be like if we posted our "Compliments" rather than comments. If people could put aside their unrecognized insecurities, and Limited judgement, just imagine how fantastic this world would appear.

This is the eccentric I remember from way back when he was doing his tours for the books he mentions. I wanted to admire the man because he is so full of life and so quirky, which unfortunately is not all he is about. He is enjoyable exclusively while he is doing his fun things. As soon as he starts into some heavy duty consideration he transforms into an illogical and typically depressing airhead, if you can follow him at all.

How I got here: I fucking love Cliff Stoll. He basically got me to choose my major, and ages later, I know I made the right choice. I sure hope he's done a TED talk. Turns out, damn, he was doing them back before they even got big. Go read the Cuckoo's Egg. It's better than any cyberpunk novel, it's better than any hip hacker movie, and this guy is just absolutely amazing, as a person, as an educator, as an astronomer, as a computer scientist, and as a storyteller.
