@@KaiKrimson56the issue of horror is that it is "grounded" in the sense that it revolves around a virus , it doesn't have any paranormal stuff like the markers in dead space such as that iconic scene of the guy thumping his head on the wall and doesn't have a sense of mystery but relies on gross horror and jumpscares . I still think it is a decent game regardless of all the issues and really shines in many areas because of its fantastic sound design and lighting. It is not exactly a melee focused game because when you get a gun you get enough ammo in areas to go haywire on the enemies and treat it like third person shooter which was a good thing for me

I like linear games, Dead Space 2 was also super linear, but it knew how to mix it up with variety of enemies, Zero-G puzzles, and both horror and over-the-top action set pieces. Even a game like FEAR, which was super repetitive and lacked variety, made up for that with its stellar shooting and AI. This made the combat in that game an engaging & fun loop to go through. The Callisto Protocol fails at this on all fronts and it's only real offering is its flawed combat which doesn't hold up for its failings.

I find the horror element was highjacked by the beat'em up element. The game makes it very clear very early your best and most reliable option to survive is Mr. Whacky. I then just go into Doom Slayer mode, no horror or fear just kill, kill, kill. Any enemy: shotgun stun, extended combo, shotgun dead. I think of the Arkham series a lot when thinking of this games combat. It was simple but sufficiently thought out on how to make the most of the zoomed out camera, combo counter and multiple foes. This combat has a very low ceiling once figured out.

It shouldn't even be that hijacked if they know what they're doing tbh. Condemned was very punchy and whacky too but it never felt this weightless even with the use of its biggest flaw which was the taser. It's probably the pacing, but I dunno it's just not...as good as one would hope it would be.

@@SolidRaiden2655 how do you run out of ammo in DS1? Enemies are always dropping money or ammo and there's tons of sellable items that you should be overflowing with ammo after just a few missions, especially because of the store and ammo is so cheap. Fixing the camera+magnetism, and adding a NG+ would solve a lot of problems for me When you have all of the guns, upgraded baton and grip, the combat really clicks, i saw myself really using all 3 to deal with hordes The 2 big guns can be used to kill at a distance and do heavy damage, while the other are great for combos or blowing up the suicide bomber enemies, with an upgraded grip i can use it more and throw enemies into hazards, it felt actually good and intense ??? But this only started to happen after the mines, in the final area of the game Having a NG+ would mean i could carry everything i had to the earlier game and deal have actual fun Nothing will fix the shitty and uninteresting plot, or add more character interactions to develop them more, or more world building, enemy variety, remove the copious amount of crawling and squeezing, the lack of environment variation, add some few chapters in the prison pre outbreak, change the environments to look like a prison instead of grey corridors after grey corridors But at least the combat would be fun Anyway, life aways makes sure to remember us why we don't pre order things

The encounters get way better, the inventory is no longer a total drag on what little exploring u are given, and there was wayyyy less crawling and slipping through cracks in the back half. This was really overlooked by so many reviewers who just decided the combat was bad bc they tried to mash R2 in a crowd of enemies instead of using any crowd control techniques

I hope they survive this backlash because I'd love to see a sequel that improves all of this.

This is a comment from someone else but I feel this too... After seeing a litany of complaints from people who 1 haven't actually been In the survival horror/action genre long or have old nostalgic ties to ds1 and cant remember anything I think some points should be brought up. First let's do bullet sponges and the enemies take so many hits to kill, okay well turn the game off maximum security no ones forcing a grown ass man to play a game on the hardest difficulty, also resident evil 1 the actual king of survival horror let's see what that game play loop is... do 30 puzzles and run from half the enemies with shit ass tank controls cause all enemies are bullet sponges, resident evil 7s loop of run from jack and then fight him 3 seperate times or fight the same two molded enemies who are also bullet sponges and then compare this to the gameplay loop of dead space 1 walk through linear corridors and shooting a majority of enemies 1 time in a arm and leg, now that dead space apparently a magnum opus of all survival horror(especially in space)has been brought up let's talk about the next topics... topic two the shit story, the story of dead space also let's be fair and not use the multitude of extra games,movies and even novels they needed to flesh out the first games story. The major things that happen in dead space are as follows, Issac knowing his wife is dead but refuses to watch the video past a certain point to give us a shock factor later on top of not having any dialog at all the subversion Kendra being the actual villain instead of Hammond and the cause of that outbreak being a alien relic sending a fucking signal into people or dead things and turning them into necromporhs lol a marker a signal?! Great story, now the last two topics the price point of games, resident evil two on m64 is only 512 mbits and the legend of Zelda ocarina of time is 32 Mb and these games sold for 49$ in the late 90s and early 2000s with inflation that's over 110$ for under 50 mbs of material in a game. And last topic is this game should not be 70 dollars its too short.. ah yes the too short argument on survival horror games most if not all resident evil games can be speed run without glitches in under 3 hours the even have a timer on the games along with rankings so that's a moot point seems the games that started this genre were ment to be beaten fast & Same can be said about dead space 1 game can easily be beaten with plasma cutter only run in a single sitting from like 14 year Olds during summer break and this being said it seems most survival horror games rely on tropes or puzzles to make the game seem longer. Most hype beasts seem to not realize the survival horror genre is either a shit ton of puzzles or long linear corridors. With all this being said I think hype culture needs to die out and to humor me if you've read this far look on RU-vid just Harry Potter legacy I'm not even a huge fan of the series and i see multiple different youtubers hungry for views and money dropping videos on even the smallest hint of new gameplay or mechanics or customization and dudes who love the Harry Potter books or movies will see this for months on end and be a feral animal when the game comes out and then when the game doesn't hold up the the vision in their head created by some youtuber being money hungry and drip feeding them info for over a year they get livid.

I did get the feeling that Mayo would appreciate the combat of this game despite being disliked by most. When I watched a playthrough I did notice that while the combat is somewhat lacking, it had some form of "flow" to it The ability to consecutively dodge as long as you remembered what direction you dodged last, watching animations to read enemies, grabbing gun combo opportunities, the focus on 1on1, and the capability for crowd control provided by GRIP when you're overwhelmed. It feels like it was designed by someone who enjoyed thirdperson melee games like SIFU or For Honor, and tried to put his own spin on it. So the combat system does have it's good sides, I guess the friction with the community came from the expectation that we're getting another Isaac: vulnerable within melee range, but his engineer background allowed him to wield lots of unusual weapons, mostly ranged. I feel like the presentation of the protagonist would've made a massive difference. If it were me, I'd have the hero's backstory be somewhat more of an anti-hero: make him a legit criminal who has a taste for fights. That way, it is conveyed to the player that this character WANTS to go at it up close while also subtly explaining why this character seems to have the reflexes (and strength) to go toe-to-toe with these monsters. Kinda like doomguy basically. I guess I'll still wait for the patch that lets mid-tier rigs to play this thing.

@Fedor_Kisliakov
@Fedor_Kisliakov Год назад
It's hard to tell about RE4 yet, but Dead Space looks very promising. It looks like they made Ishimura into a Resident Evil style map that you gradually unlock and can traverse to any location at any given time. Plus you will have different environmental interaction that allows you to bear a single area differently. For example, they showed an area in which you have to cut off power. Maybe it's chapter 4, when you are supposed to reroute the power. Point is, you can choose between, for example, cutting the life support or lights. If you turn off the former, you will have to quickly navigate through the environment. If you choose lights, then you can proceed as usual, but in pitch blackness, which gives enemies obvious advantages. If this is their approach, the remake has big potential. Very big.

I was curious about your opinion on this game. Many people complain that melee with more than one enemy is frustrating, but I think it's really about avoiding these situations. It reminded me of your challenge matters video, and this game really has unique combat that forces you into its systems. Therefore, I did some experimentation and damn, now I'm having a lot of fun with the combat. It is really quite complex and rewarding, especially when using the grp and weapons correctly. But I guess most people complaining about the combat don't really try to learn it and instead seem to get offended when a game doesn't equal skill to aiming accuracy. I was however quite frustrated by the combat in the early levels with only the melee weapon... But people saying that they "hate" the game or it's just "bad" are in my opinion totally disrespectful. The graphics, audio and animations are all insanely good and everyone seems to agree. The camera, I have not had any issues with so far... But I agree that its linearity is slightly disappointing. There are however really cool secrets to find when exploring a little.

I think you might be slightly overselling how interesting the combat is. Yeah you can unlock another couple attacks, but that's still wildly inadequate for a game that is clearly focusing on melee combat. The dodge is the most braindead thing I've ever seen, when you pair it with the one attack string, the melee combat has depth similar to that of a mobile game. And while you can do some weird things like using the GRP to keep enemies locked near the wall like you showed...all that's doing is wasting a resource when you can just mash attack with the dodge in between. It also makes the camera work more horribly than it already does. The enemy magnetism(games need to stop with this shit already) further funnels you into melee since aiming at these enemies is such a shitshow, and the guns in general are nerfed in terms of utility from something like Dead Space or RE4. And then there's the delimb system which is heavily dumbed down from Dead Space-remember when enemies would lose their head and then go insane and their entire behavior would change? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

And this is just a small aspect of the game. The story is not there. The game was not ready to be released this year and that is the truth.

Nah, no matter what, the combat always feels lame and repetitive (in a bad way). 90% of the combat is dodge and strike, that's the core of it no matter what add ons you have. I dont think they attempted a multi enemy combat loop, it was designed mainly for one on one but the developers messed up. They even recently patched the AI to hang back more to allow for more one on one focused fights. They knew they screwed up.

I think it's like a blend of RE2 and Dead Space and it doesn't do this too well. It needed to lean more into the prison horror stuff, psychos, prison gangs like the one that killed the guards and Hung them in the basement (they're mentioned in audio logs). They could've had us lose the baton and being stalked by some psycho in the prison for a bit and slowly show more and more mutated inmates. Doing a playthrough of outlast and I just think it could've leaned into that type of horror more, since it has a huge 180° shift to psychological horror at the end for some reason. Tell us about the inmates and what they're in for, how scary these people you're locked up with are. But Glen Schofield wanted to crank it up to 1000% action and no horror 😭

Might I suggest trying the World of Assassination Trilogy (2016) of the Hitman series? My guess is that you've already played that but in case you haven't, I feel it will be a good example, one worth checking out especially when it comes to the topic of level design and allowing for a multi faceted approach to achieving the same objective.

I second this. As someone who doesn't like stealth games, Hitman occupies a niche of the stealth genre that I'm able to get into. It feels so free form and these generic targets get more character development the more you replay and experiment with their kills. Levels are dense with opportunity and are open yet also feel segmented because you need the right item and disguise to be there. Its more so a puzzle game than a stealth game that also encourages player expression. Personally haven't played anything quite like it.

This is another issue of releasing in a buggy state. If you don't want reviews correctly recommend against purchasing it before a patch comes out, then don't release it. Dodge > shoot > dodge > reload > dodge > shoot Rinse and repeat. It takes away any sense of urgency, tension and intensity from the combat.

For me, this game takes Witcher 2's place as one of the most poorly conceptualized combat systems. I think the GRP - it's a cheat to deal with bad design - is bugged, 'cause it doesn't auto refil so you have to go into Menu, find an Item, hold E to use it - Genius design. Mutations are baffling, 'cause, I swear, for me to reliably shoot it, I need to use melee combo + Quick shot, but Quick shot is an auto aim and you can't turn it off. What makes matters worse is that effects can become completely disconnected from Animation + no wind ups some times, Targetting is non-existent, Unavoidable damage is a Cardinal Sin, in my book, for many games and this one is not an exception. Camera. Animations are too long for everything + no Animation cancel(I think). Poor upgrade system with not enough Money and not enough Inventory and Loot to acquire upgrades. Enemy variety. Tedious end scenes. No Back attack indicators.

TCP's combat would have benefited tremendously from Doom Eternal's "Fun Zone" design philosophy, by which I mean it asks more of the player until they're intuitively using all their tools well. As it is, you don't need to be good at anything to slog your way through the game and have a miserable time doing it. Would have worked out better for everyone if there was a big solid wall that got you to start having fun or quit playing and refund before the 2 hour mark. They couldn't have tutorialized the combat worse: melee gets a QTE sequence implying dodge timing and directionality that doesn't exist followed by a single wall of text saying "actually there's no timing lol", and the GRP is introduced in a room devoid of environmental interaction. Just tone-deaf stuff. Honestly, I don't see how this game benefits from an infinite-window dodge that's also bound to your movement and camera angle when you could have just had a conventional button press system. It's as if they had a completely different system that they wound up cutting for time and just rigged something up to get it out the door. Further, they struggled to add any sense of progression to the combat experience. You have stuff that's in the game just to be irritating (enemies blocking your swing and dragging out combat while adding no interest or variation; your quick-shot targeting only aims at the tentacles sometimes) that you have to pay to get rid of. You have an entire blocking mechanic that's all but worthless apart from reducing projectile damage and doesn't become any less worthless with credit investment. Some of the weapons are outright newbie traps to fabricate that perform worse than your defaults and permanently handicap you by clogging your inventory with their ammo. Most alt-fires are wastes of ammo and therefore money. GRP recharge is 90 seconds fully upgraded and doesn't happen gradually, but all at once after that wait period, making it functionally pointless to upgrade since you'll be standing around between fights if you want to take advantage of it regardless. Same is true of challenge: the big wrinkle Two-Head adds is he's immune to melee, so after all those hours of playing, your resources you've been ignoring and selling down (because you have no fucking item box and every other door is a point of no return) are suddenly important, especially because you fight him *two more times* after the point where you quit. With no variation. Every way this game "evolves" the combat is by taking bits of the experience away, rather than giving you more tools and asking more of you in exchange. That's just scratching the surface. It shows in a million different ways that this game was rushed out the door to prop up Krafton's flagging stock value (60% down from Dec 2021). I'd love to believe SDS was screwed by their publisher but their own executives went on a marketing blitz as the game was being finalized promising shit they clearly knew wasn't gonna be in the game by then, like adaptive AI and big chase sequences and "beta paths". We got burned.

Yes the story is a bit odd as it dident have all the mystery i hoped for or replayablity. The combat was intresting. I admite it shows some innovation and i hope they can perfect it. Dodging is a great idea yet i failed it alot on meduim and with panic reaction got me killed alot. Plus the death scene when pilled up made it rough.. the final boss fight made me reload to earlier make all the ammo and change it to easy... part of me hoped for a dead space feel slowly grabbing new tools and suit upgrades. Yet the protocol seemed far to slow. Found myself asking what is next? The foes while fast and deadly. Make it rough as you may not get the best veiw of their movements making it harder to dodge... blocking seemed to be unresponsive at times confused if i did it or not. The worst part is I found myself forced to use the grip to cheese enemies just yeeting them off ledges.. it made it feel cheap like I lacked options to do much else. Grabbing explosives some times seemed to fail or glitch out and yea.. That was rough.. I hoped for alot more. More of a survival horror. For example in the protocol its super impossible to just evade or run past foes.. WORSTE OF ALL THE MECHS. THE THINGS WE ARE TOLD KILL EVERYTHING ON SIGHT. DONT KILL ENEMIES! they just ignore them and only kill you.. I was heart broken I was legit planning on using my foes agaisnt each other. Human infected and security systems. That alone would have made it intresting. Like I want to have an ah moment. Or a wait! Yes that will work! Oh my gosh I can do this! Or even a Yes YES LET THEM FIGHT. Above all my review is simple. Wait for it to go on sale. It has some intresting ideas and its neat to walk though and look at it like a mmm what if kinda of deal. Remember this is the first game in awhile. While its triple A Maybe veiw it as AA it will help your mind set.. Above all good luck and remember to prepare for the final fight.

I thought the combat was interesting but there are two factors why it has this massive roadblock to potential for me. The first is, the movement options isn't just as varied as I'd hoped they'd be. Take Condemned for instance, a horror game that is focused on melee combat and almost shares the same philosophy as Callisto Protocol does. Because the game has a variety of weapons to choose from it's always important to pick what you're good at and consider what works for you the best, adding in current enemy behavior in a level. Another example is something like Bloodborne's rally system, where getting hit isn't the worst case scenario and you're encourage to counter because it regains your health just a bit before you can hunker down, a reward for taking risks and mastering weapon variety and moveset, a system so good it inspired two of one of the greatest shooters in the current and last gen. There is none of that in Callisto Protocol however, so I just can't wait for each encounter to be really over even if I am doing somewhat fairly good. Also that enemy variety is abyssmal, and I am saying this after playing through RE4. RE4 almost tricks you into thinking you're fighting multiple types of enemies when essentially, they all behave closely and similarly, what matters is what context of their equipment. That's why cultists, is so distinct from other ganados, and how other ganados are different from them as well. You can't use the same strategy, despite similar behaviors. Biophages needs more distinctiveness and variety, and that's a shame since they look interesting.
@Impalingthorn
@Impalingthorn Год назад
Hard agree. This game was something I was hyped for ever since the initial trailers dropped years ago and I have not been this disappointed in a long time. The performance issues I could handle; I knew they would patch those even if I think the game should have been release in a functional state. The combat though, being such an integral part of the experience and something you will be doing nonstop for 8-10 hours, just becomes mind numbing. It's like the gears were turning then stopped halfway through development and we've been left with nothing but a repetitive turn based beat'em up. Hit three times, dodge two times, start again. For 8 hours. The guns meanwhile have some variety but nothing substantial or in any way that adds a new layer to the combat beyond popping a shot off between swings. Honestly, they needed to take a note from a game like The Suffering. Outdated abd old, sure, but that game understood enemy and weapon variety and had a similar setup; you are in a prison and everything goes to hell while you slowly accrue an arsenal of weapons ranging from a shiv to a tommy gun and each one is preserved or better used on certain types of enemies. And the enemies? Even the standard fair Slayers could do crazy stuff like crawl on ceilings like a spider. Injectors could leap at you, Burrowers forced you to move around as they moved underground like moles and only came up to attack, Festers were big and hulking; better left alone as they had a one hit kill and consumed too much ammo to take down. This game just has... Dudes. Any and all horror it might have started with you became jaded to after the first 2 hours. And that's just a real shame. I was excited for this one.
@danielgeronimo5538
@danielgeronimo5538 Год назад
@@Impalingthorn The Suffering was also non-pretentious, it's over the top, sure. Can get holier than thou with its concept of executions as monsters, but you have every freedom to approach combat however you want and it kinda does still try to scare you, even if it can get really crazy late game. And then there's also Condemned, Monolith's under the radar masterpiece released alongside another classic, FEAR. You are forced to go downright dirty and gritty with enemy encounters, you can even see how malformed the enemies there when you headbutt them, but with proper understanding with mechanics and interesting levels filled with unique enemies, you are never bored. Plus it had one of the most interesting puzzles in a game, something that relates to crime investigation, with some CSI shit. I don't have high expectations from the game, but I was very interested in the combat and gameplay, but with that coming up short, I was left disappointed. And I believe the much needed criticism is in due, they marketed this game with some inflated titles like "perfecting horror" or some shit. Now I get it, you gotta promote your game, I've seen way more inflated teasers from Kpop groups, but you gotta realize, in this field and hemisphere, people take that seriously. And now we really have to pop the bubble, sorry Glen, better do well next time.
@Impalingthorn
@Impalingthorn Год назад
That was definitely the biggest disappointment for me. I don't normally let my skepticism aside these days but I did it for Glen here and I hate having to turn around and call him out for it, but he set himself up. He billed this like it was going to be the next evolution in "Survival Horror" and created an entire miniseries about crafting horror, like... It was pretentious in hindsight. Glad you have some insights about the combat, I never played the Condemned series but I have watched playthroughs and now that I'm thinking about it those games really did handle it perfectly. Guns were sparse and when you did get them, you generally ONLY had the ammo in the magazine, but as a tradeoff they PUNCHED and felt satisfying. The melee tradeoffs were great. The atmosphere understood what it was about. And you know what? Condemned 2, for all its problems, still understood how a Chase segment should be done; that god damn bear scene is legendary. My experience has mostly been with oldschool survival horror; Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, etc. I've played a lot of other stuff like FEAR, Alan Wake, Call of Cthulu (Dark Corners of the Earth), Amnesia, but few of them have the gritty, stylized combat like what you see in Condemned or the type of considered enemy design like in The Suffering. I'm just seeing all the things Callisto could have been and it hurts knowing how surface level most of it is. I'm not even a huge fan of RE4 compared to others, but I do think it could have taken notes from that game because THAT game understood how to mask its linearity and make section to section gameplay FUN... Or, hell, they could have just taken more notes from their previous game, Dead Space.
@danielgeronimo5538
@danielgeronimo5538 Год назад
@@Impalingthorn Another thing about Condemned 2 is, it has the same system Callisto Protocol has with its blocks and counters, but the difference is, it's not a dodge, it's a freaking counter. You avoid damage as much as you deal it back, it makes you feel like you're actually brawling and the enemies aren't as brain dead as the biophages were because they know what you're on about and they will not deal with it. You can use the similar strats from RE4 with Callisto Protocol, but it's boring because, unlike the action system of RE4, you don't earn that suplex or roundhouse. Picture this, if RE4 had the village ganado as the main enemy every single time, you learn the main gameplay loop, and you fight the chainsaw man as bosses across the game and had Bitores Mendez as the final boss. That is what Callisto Protocol is, it's not fun.

i saw the Specs requirements are a tad demanding Deadspace was a least quality for it's time and actually aged well. next years remake might improve it but i'd haveto get a whole new PC to get spec to play it.

I wanted this game to be a great survival horror😐 . .. maybe The sequel will be what they promised this game will be. That's if they get to do a second one. With a lot of improvements we might get a good one.

Im playign it for the furst time on PS5, the performance us fine, graohics are amazing and the combat is interesting. When it works it feels visceral and awesome. I hope they improve the combat system in another game, or someone else takes the ideas and adds to them because its very interesting

Perhaps the developers didn't have bigger budget for the game so they decided to glue different features from other games which looked cool there but did not created game's own style, something simple but memorable, something that makes The Callisto Protocol.

I can't get over how buying the recoil grip for your gun still has both your hands on the pistol lol

My only issue with the game is Combat with multiple enemies. I actually like the combat, each encounter feels threatening. But when there are multiple enemies, the combat can get chaotic. Other than that, the game is beautiful and as for the linearity, Dead Space 1,2 and 3 are linear. DS1 revisits areas, but it's not because you can freely go back to the area, it's cause you need to go back. I refunded my PC copy before playing cause I saw the stutters. So i bought it on PS5 and it was beautiful

I feel like I dodged an bullet by not buying this game. It looked promising, but when people got their hands on it... Everything changed, and I backed out from buying it.

I'd be curious to know Mayo's opinion on the Evil Within franchise. I don't recall him speaking about it.
