Kristopher Matheson is a Canadian photographer who lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. His work has a meditative and contemplative feel to it, as he often explores certain themes again and again, searching for new inspirations and directions. He has an amazing sense of balance in his compositions and choices of color and tonality that gives his work a painterly sensibility.

I really enjoyed this five part series. I'm interested in moving my photography in this direction, and you offered a lot of valuable insights on the intersection of painting and photography. Thank you.

Thanks, Bob! If you can’t tell, I’d like to move my own work in this direction as well. I couldn’t put my finger on what the qualities were that I was seeing, and so I dug in deep and shared what I could find. It turned out to be a pretty deep subject!

Thanks, David! I appreciate it :). I’m not ready to announce anything formally yet but I will say I’ve been working on a long term documentary project about photography. I’ll be back after that and I will have a lot more to get into here ;). I’ll also likely have a lot of extra footage to make videos from. If you liked this video, it will be right up your alley :).

Speaking of not understanding why someone doesn’t have a bigger following..... I’m not sure how I got here (I think it was a sidebar while watching someone else’s video on journaling because the first of your videos I watched was on journaling), but I was looking through your videos and thought, “Wait..... what??? He’s a photographer?” Which brings me to this video..... and now I’m wondering why the heck you have (at the time of this comment) less than 500 subscribers. Your breakdown of Kristopher’s work (which I am now compelled to check out and stalk) was more considered than I expected. And thanks for supporting fellow artists, by the way. That’s something I need to do more of myself. I didn’t check the date on this video but I’m guessing it was Tuesday of last week, because going from 25 to 500 in a week and a half seems about right for the production quality and insightful commentary I’m seeing here..... I just nudged you closer to your first 100k subscribers.

Good grief! I just noticed you supplied a table of contents for the video! That’s going the extra mile, dude!

I think of it as the least I can do if my videos tend to be on the long side! I don't know if they get much use but I figure someday someone will want to jump around for a certain topic and not watch the whole thing.

You will not have a large following unless you start doing gear reviews. That's what gets the clicks. Please don't do it! If you look at the views on Ted Forbes's Art of Photography channel, you'll see the ones speaking to the actual "art" have a fraction of the views of the ones he does on gear. It's sad so few take photography seriously as an art. IMHO, it is better to have a smaller loyal audience than a large amount of clicks from people who are not engaged and have no depth. Thank you.

I completely agree, Gary, and those are my favorite videos both to watch and to make. They are what made me such a fan of Ted as well, and I’m in that minority that’s clicking on those every time and skipping most of the tech ones. Reviews come in handy when you’re researching gear and I’m sure that’s why they perform, but they don’t bring me closer to my personal goals here. I’d be happy to have an engaged audience who feels as strongly about this work as I do rather than a “following”. The great thing about art and photography is how subjective it is. I could watch any number of videos about the meaningful and considered side of the artists I love and get something new each time, as each artist, presenter and viewer brings their own understanding to it. Then you talk about it with someone else and they got something completely different and equally valid. I strongly feel the path forward for me here is to lean into that side of making videos. I’m sure you’re right that it won’t mean explosive growth here, but that isn’t my idea of success anyway. I want to make and share art and have great conversations about the role it has in our lives as creators and as audiences. I’d be foolish to think I can control the outcome but my instinct is to do more of that and less of anything else. Thanks for the really thoughtful comment and for prompting me to put into words something I’ve been really working through these past couple months. Take care and I hope to see you around!
