"Moni Mekhala Ream Eyso" is the most sacred dance drama in Cambodia. It is performed every year in the buong suong ceremony, and explains the origins of lightning, thunder and rain according to the Khmer people. Prumsodun Ok tells this empowering tale that still enlightens our world today.
Lesson by Prumsodun Ok, animation by Silvia Prietov.

Mekhala is happy they got prizes, because she has a crystal ball, the wisdom to sense why they should get prizes too. Anyone else notice that the story is basically the Legend of Zelda? Moni Mekhala is Zelda who has a crystal ball (blue water, wisdom, consciousness), Ream Eyso is Ganon who has the axe (red fire, physical power/energy), and Vorachhun is the 'Link' between them, having a master sword (green balance, courage, life), to balance the 'physical' energy with the pure consciousness. Therefore, despite suffering the slings and arrows of the world, Link is able continue his journey, finally 'defeating' Ganon, which really only means that the three become one. Ganon becomes his power and Zelda his wisdom. In the fullness of time, they are not truly competitors, but best friends. That is why all three received gifts. In a sense they are all equal, but in another sense, they are all part of a journey of wisdom , which of course is why it's called the Legend of Zelda, not the Legend of Link. The game, like this ancient story, teaches us to see the value of qualities we may tend to view as feminine: avoiding battle when the time is not right, being passive (calm), etc. The rain of Moni Mekhala's wisdom fell on Vorachhun and he became completely calm in his symbolic 'death' (death of his ego), claiming his full power and returning balance to the world. In countless universes/timelines, Ream Eyso (Ganon) still comes back into power again and again, a never-ending game, an exciting rollercoaster of thrills and chills amid an ocean of absolute inner bliss/wisdom. Electricity, by the way, is literally the interaction of the ying and the yang, the feminine and masculine principles underlying the universe. So this story is not a myth at all. The names are symbolic, but rain and lightning (and all the stuff of the world) is the interaction between the light of pure consciousness and the darkness of the dancing physical energy/matter. Everything is electromagnetism (shakti) 'imagined' by a singular consciousness. There is no true distinction between consciousness and physical matter.

I feel like there's a bit of a barrier when it comes to that sort of thing. Here in the US, European myths are pretty common. You might even get some exposure to Scandinavian mythologies as well, but you're not going to hear much from countries further east or south of Europe (Or, ironically, from the Americas themselves) except some of the most prominent ones. I would imagine that's because eastern countries like India, China, Cambodia, Japan, etc had essentially no direct contact with Europe for much of human history. The middle east did, but that was mostly tainted by religious "disagreements" so I would imagine not many people hearkened to folk tales of "heretics". That's my theory, at least.

For those who think the story isn't finished, you're right! They're still fighting. Ream Eyso is still looking for Moni Mekala and every time he's close to her, he throws his ax, which always misses. His ax produces the Thunder after the Lightning (Imagine Dragon ref). That's why every time you see a flash of lightning, you better brace yourself for a tremendous sound that follows. Eyso misses again! Poor guy, Moni Mekala is always a step ahead of him. This story is one of my childhood favorites. I've always been a fan, watching about other myths from around the world, but never had I thought TED would make an animation of it, and a great one too. Thank you for spreading knowledge about my country!

Another version of the tale is that the orb was the only prize. The yaksa(demon) cried so loudly and long enough like a child, so the old sage pitied him by giving the axe as gift, so that he can take back the orb knowing that the goddess are too smart to lose it.

You should make a video of Ibong Adarna. A famouse Filipino myth.
@voldemortthenoselessfreak2126
@voldemortthenoselessfreak2126 3 года назад
I wouldn't consider Ibong Adarna as a myth. but rather a fantasy character since Adarna isn't a created by our ancient ancestors and isn't categorize as Filipino mythological creature. and we already have a mythological bird, which is "Amihan"

"លោកតា" (Lok Ta) meaning "grandpa" this Khmer word probably has its roots in the Thai language. In Thai, there is the word "หลวงตา" (Luang Ta) which means grandfather. The word "หลวง" (Luang) is derived from the Kra-Dai language family. means "ใหญ่" (Yai = big) And the word "ตา" (Ta) also has its roots from the Kra-Dai language as well.
