Historical archival footage of the places and highlights of one of the greatest train journeys in the world, a trip across Canada from sea to sea on the Trans-Canada Limited, Canada's fastest transcontinental train.
The Trans-Canada Limited was considered as one of the world's finest trains in its time. The concept of this train was that of a de luxe ‘Hotel-on-Wheels.' It was the world's longest-distance all-first-class sleeper train, with the fastest time across the North American continent from one ocean to the other.
The Trans-Canada Limited was operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was inaugurated in 1919, just after World War I, and lasted until 1930.
As a result of the economic depression following the great Stock Market Crash of October 1929, it was cancelled in 1931. As with any other CPR passenger train, the equipment was the very best available, yet in June of 1929 the whole train was completely re-outfitted with 10 brand new sets of cars - each set costing in excess of one million dollars.
This early travelogue documents travel across Canada by rail, introducing major cities and places of interest. Traveling over 3,600 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific takes five days to by the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The journey starts in Saint John, New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy. Highlights of the trip are: Algonquin Hotel; salmon fishing. Quebec City is the oldest city in the North America; The Chateau Frontenac Hotel towering over the St Lawrence.
Montreal is Canadian Pacific headquarters and Trans-Canada Limited. Ottawa is the capital of the nation. Toronto is the Queen City. Niagara Falls is connected to the French River and Georgian Bay. Canadian Pacific steamer carries its passengers across the Great Lakes.
Winnipeg to the prairies and across the prairies through Regina and Saskatoon. Arrival at Calgary and Edmonton. Banff and Lake Louise are located in the Canadian Rockies. Through the Rockies, the train ends in Vancouver where English Bay and Stanley Park are located. The city of Victoria gives an image of England on the Pacific.

A great period in our history when we had to competitive RR companies CNR and CPR so due to that the service was top notch compared to VIA which is a joke. There were bar cars and cigar lounges...what a difference, no comparison and people would actually engage in conversation because there were no smart phones or wifi.

The Trans-Canada Limited was a Montreal/Vancouver train. The early shots clearly are of eastern connections. Also, I suspect some of the western shots were of CPR's other transcontinental trains of the time. It is interesting CPR included shots of Niagara Falls -- which was NEVER served by CPR -- and Edmonton, which was not served by the transcontinental trains. By the way, Niagara Falls is NOT connected either to Georgian Bay or French River. The Niagara River runs between Lakes Erie and Ontario.

Thank you for pointing this out, you are right on all counts. I believe the archival footage was put together from a variety of sources and was meant to be an early travelogue or an over view of popular Canadian destinations that could be reached by rail, but not necessarily stops along the Trans-Canada or the CPR.

Some, if not all of this footage is earlier than the 1920s. The original parliament buildings in Ottawa are show at 2:20. They burned in 1916.
@FreedomLovingLoyalistOfficial
@FreedomLovingLoyalistOfficial 2 года назад
No, those buildings still exist. The camera was probably pointing to the other part of the Parliament because of that fire.

Yup. Canada is the land of back to the future. Canada is the only G7 country without a high speed train. But visit the Halton County Radial Railway, an interactive museum located in Milton, Ontario and there you can see lots of beautiful old rolling stock. There you can see The Royal Montreal a train that's a hundred years old that daily traveled between Ottawa to Montreal, the average speed of that train was 90 miles an hour! (that's not kilometers an hour). Our country was once was on the leading edge of technology from trains to planes (Avro Arrow). The future was ours for the taking, we once held so much promise.

@@mycompasstv I twice took an Excursion of CN'S 6060 . Mtl. to Ottawa in 77 and 78 . at one point everyone disembarked the train. It then backed up a few miles then came barreling down. One of thee most awesomest sights I've been ever privileged to witness

To bad the camera man didn't know where Canada's Parliament was located. He took a picture of the east block. The Senate and House of Commons are in the centre block.
@geoffpimlott1218
@geoffpimlott1218 5 лет назад
It's the old Parliament Buildings & previous tower that's shown - prior to the fire thst destroyed them in February 1916. Perhaps CP didn't want to show the new Centre Block & Peace Tower under construction as it was until the mid-20s or so.
