Candyman is one of those weird horror movies that breaks almost every rule of horror movies - low body count, killer is almost always in full light and ends up a tragic, sympathetic character - and works better than almost every other 90s horror movie because of it.

What I love about Candyman that the other films fucked up is the feeling that it truly is "a legend". A story passed down from person to person, each generation adding thru own touch to build on it. With the first film we are merely seeing how part of the legend came to be By making him just a Jason or a Freddy misses the point entirely.
@stefanfilipovits21
@stefanfilipovits21 2 года назад
Well said
@defender2222
@defender2222 2 года назад
@@stefanfilipovits21 Its honestly why I am hoping that the 2021 version is going to go the route that the Candyman legend from the first film isn't the true origin of him. That instead Candyman absorbs into himself all these different origins, taking bits and pieces from each retelling and adding them to himself. Much as the 'classic vampire' is in fact just many different tellings of the legend pieced together so too is Candyman. There really was a son of a slave who loved a white woman and died because of it. But there was also a nice man who handed out candy who had a false hand and was brutally killed when he was falsely accused of a crime. And another man killed for being a suspected pedo but was innocent. I'm hoping the new movie is that there is no singular origin for Candyman. He absorbs other legends into himself, much like how Greek Myth did that with Herakles. The hook came from one legends. The coat another. The bees another. So on and so on. A being not of our world that takes from the legends to build itself up
@Japaneseanimeguy

I also always loved how in the original (until the very end anyway), you could keep guessing as to whether he was real or if Helen was simply so wrapped up in the legends herself that it was affecting her grasp on reality. As is the case with the legend itself in-movie, the audience is also speculating just how much of what they're seeing is reliable. Either outcome would have worked, but revealing it is real not only means we get a sweet final scare, but also gives you that final sense of "well yes, it could just be a story...but do you want to risk it?"

I met Tony Todd at a screening of Sushi Girl at comic con and he is just the sweetest coolest guy but I was still scared of him and he could tell so he asked whats up and I told him straight out im scared cause Im standing in-front of THE Candy Man he just laughed shook my threw up a shaka and took a picture with me and complemented me on my Rorschach cosplay. If I met him again Id probably offer to buy him a beer or something

yeah I wanna buy Eddie Murphy playing Candyman but that laugh he makes would make it seem way less scary. plus he would probably want to play multiple parts.

Eddie Murphy wouldn't have ever been right for this role. A good actor in his own right, but Todd brings an energy that is both subtle and regal. His calm demeanor is a huge part of what makes him feel threatening. Eddie flourishes in more bombastic, flashy roles. That said, he was great in Vampire in Brooklyn.

A triple-header! Impressive, Brad. Between this, the Hand that Rocks the Cradle, and Mikey, 1992 was a solid year for horror. When Candyman first calls out for Helen in the lonely parking garage, it is horrifying....not since the original Black Christmas have I been so frightened by just a voice!

The first movie is so good, damn good. It is terrifying with good jump scares, it is bone chilling with the story telling and it is truly horrific in all the right ways. As a kid, I thought the story of saying Candyman in the mirror 5 times was around before the movie, that the movie was cashing in on an urban legend and not creating one. Movie is kind of like Slenderman in that way.
