A couple months after I first moved to Los Angeles in September 1991, some friends and I were cruising around town around midnight on a Friday night, and pulled up next to Dom Deluise at a red light on Santa Monica Blvd. He was in a sporty, black, stretch Mercedes. As we were all craning our necks to see if it was really him, he looks over at us, throws up his jazz hands like he does, and says through his open window in the way only he can, “Wanna racccce??” As soon as the light turned green, he rocketed ahead and left us in the dust, in disbelief of what had just happened. It was hilarious. I lived in LA for 25 years, and worked in Hollywood for more than half that time, partied all over Sunset Blvd and Hollywood with tons of celebrity sightings, but that one was still one of my favorites.
Fun Fact: the giving the pep talk at the beginning of the race was Brock Yates. Brock was the editor if Car Driver msgazine. The originator of the real underground Cannoball race(s). He was also the first winner of the first Cannonball which he did in an ambulance.
The ambulance was the last race the first race he drove a Ferrari Daytona and the ambulance was the same one in the movie. But the ambulance Never finished the race. And it was lost to time But Travis Bell was friends with Brock and asked him about everything he knew about the Ambulance so he could build a exact match and Pamela Yates signed the ambulance and I think Burt did too. And you can watch people talk about the real cannonball on the RU-vid channel VinWiki
Tattle Tales host Bert Convey jumped out of the plane on the cycle. Country and western singer Mel Tillis was Bradshaw's partner. The Rat Packs Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. are the priests. Racer girl in pink is Adrienne Barbeau. The other Tara Buckman. Doctor is Jack Elem. The sheikh is Jamie Farr, Corporal Klinger from MASH. The predecessor for this was, I believe, "It's a mad, mad, mad world", but that movie is about a treasure hunt/race to find hidden money, instead of winning money. It's a blast. Thanx guys.
Very true! Most of the Burt Reynolds movies from that period: Hooper, the Smokey and the Bandit movies, and the Cannonball Run movies are all about being funny, and lighthearted entertainment...and since Burt liked stunt people, they were filled with real stunts too. I think they've held up pretty well and I still watch them regularly.
Cannonball Run 2. Yes, most of the actors did return Cannonball Run 3 although it's not called Cannonball Run 3. It's called Speed Zone. John Candy, the Smother Brothers are some the main characters
A few more famous faces from then: The guy in the car with Terry Bradshaw (the guy with the stutter) was Mel Tillis. He was a famous country singer who really did have a stutter when he talked. It went away when he sang. The guy in the grey van (the guy who held the van up while they changed the tire) was Joe Klecko. Klecko was a defensive lineman for the New York Jets before retiring and becoming an actor. Not many people remember, but Burt Reynolds was a football star at Florida State. His playing career got derailed by an injury and a car accident, so Burt went into acting. Throughout his career, Burt made room for ex-football players in his movies.
Have you ever heard of or seen...'It's a Mad, MAD MAD MAD WORLD '? ( 1963 ) which must have featured every single comedian of that era. Watch the trailer.
The guys in the tow truck: The short guy is in a several Burt movies including Hooper (a must watch) and the black guy was the hit man in Ghost with Swayze.
The black guy was named Rick Aviles. He was the first host of Showtime At The Apollo and a pretty good stand-up comic. He actually used to perform in the NYC subways. He died of AIDS in the mid 90s.
I clicked so fast when I saw this!!!! Y’all reacting to the best car racing comedy of all time. All the actors, Burt, Dean, Dom, Sammy, Roger Moore…all class acts & may they Rest in Peace 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"I'm Nikolas Van Helsing, professor of proctology and other related tendencies. A graduate of the University of Rangoon and assorted night classes at the Knoxville, Tennessee School of Faith Healing." "You may be a little overqualified for this job." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Rick Aviles. In And Out Award Fact: The bulk of the stars in this movie only worked for two or three days. That's My Jackie Fact: Jackie Chan made one of his first U.S. movie appearances. Inspired by director Hal Needham's notion of including bloopers during the closing credits, Chan began a tradition of doing the same in most of his movies, from this point onward. Blink And You'll Miss It Fact: At the end of the movie, during the big race to the finish, a black Trans Am appears. The driver of the car is seen in the foot race scene and Captain Chaos' (Dom Delo) dressing down scene. The driver is wearing Bandit's jacket worn by Burt Reynolds in Smokey And The Bandit II (1980). Director Cameos Fact: Director Hal Needham shows up in this movie four times. First as the EMT in the back of the ambulance, then as the voice of the cop in the speed trap ("Remember when we used to chase speeders?"), then as the truck driver who calls Roger Moore on the CB, and finally at the end of the bloopers. Historical Fact: The Cannonball Run started as the "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" and has since evolved into an unsanctioned speed record for driving across the United States. It is typically accepted to run from New York City's Red Ball Garage to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach near Los Angeles, covering a distance of about 2,906 miles (4,677 km). As of October 2021, the overall record is 25 hours 39 minutes, with an average speed of 113 miles per hour (182 km/h), driven by Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The Ferrari 308 used in the movie belonged to director Hal Needham. The ambulance used in the movie is the actual ambulance that director Hal Needham and screenwriter Brock Yates souped up and raced in the real Cannonball Run. It had been modified with a Landy built 440ci wedge engine , that made it go up to 145 miles per hour (233 kilometers per hour), and was equipped with four gas filler holes, so that the required 90 gallons (341 liters) could be pumped quickly. Needham and Yates didn't win the race (the transmission blew in Palm Springs, California) so Needham kept it in storage for several years, until the time came to make this film. After the movie, he gave it to a church charity, which raised a good deal of money auctioning it off. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Roger Moore is the same Aston Martin used in Goldfinger (1964) when it was driven by Sean Connery. The iconic Bond car went through several owners before being purchased by car collector Anthony Pugliese III in 1986 for $250,000. The car was stolen from Pugliese's storage facility in 1997 and has never been recovered.
The car that jumped into the pool that said Hawaiian Tropic on it was a nod to the guy that set up the real Cannonball Run races. He owned the company Hawaiian Tropic.
The ambulance was the original that the director drove in the original cannonball run. I can’t remember what type of v8 it had, but it was powerful. Plus the ambulance had 4 fuel ports so you could fill up very fast at any bowser.
It's live action Wacky Races. The Lambo is driven by Adrienne Barbeau whom was John Carpenter's wife. This film came out the same year as Escape From New York which she also was in. I watched this so much as a kid !
This movie is so stupid funny. It had a lot of greats in it. My favorites whenever Dean Martin and Sammie Davis Jr showed up. Cannonball Run 2 is good, has some returning people like Burt, Dom, Dean, Sammie and others.
R.I.P. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, Roger Moore, Hal Needham, Brock Yates, and all the rest that are no longer with us.
Roger Moore got in trouble for doing this and they had to add to his contract he wasn't allowed to appear in other movies dressed in a suit while being James Bond.
Went to Las Vegas with my mom and dad in 81. Back then, there was nothing for kids to do. My sister and I were locked up in our hotel room for days. We finally got to go to the movies and we saw this...over and over and over.
@@Reardonsteel236 if I recall correctly, we stayed in like the Sands Hotel, and it was a no no to even walk us kids near the casino. They acted like a 12-year-old was gonna jump over there and pull the slots and start winning millions or something.
@@Reardonsteel236 oh, and my parents were very much against Circus Circus. They said it was trash even way back then. As an adult going there now, they were not wrong.
Fast cars and long distance races: "Bullitt" (1968) Steve McQueen "Midnight Run" (1988) Robert DeNiro "Every Which Way But Loose" (1978) Clint Eastwood "Every Which Way You Can" (1980) Clint Eastwood "Pink Cadillac" (1989) Clint Eastwood "Ronin" (1998) Robert DeNiro, Jean Reno, Sean Bean, Stellan Skarsgaard "The Italian Job" (2003 remake) Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland, Jason Staitham, "The Blues Brothers" (1980) John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd "The Last Stand" (2013) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Alexander "Gone in 60 Seconds" (2000 remake) Nicholas Cage, Robert Duvall, Vinnie Jones
Inspired by the real Cannonball Baker Sea-to-shining-sea Memorial Trophy Dash, this was the "official" movie. Another Cannonball inspired movie, The Gumball Rally beat it to the box office and many consider it a better movie. There was a Cannonball Run 2 and Speed Zone, which is unofficially anogher sequel. There was also a low budgeg movie starring David Carradine simply called Cannonball.
I love the Cannonball movies! They are so silly. Love Smokey & the Bandit. I agree you should watch Hooper. That’s another fun movie with Burt Reynolds, Jan-Michael Vincent & James Best.
There are quite a few cross country race movies from the 70s through the mid 80s. Cannonball Run has to be 1 of my 2 favorites, with the Gumball Rally being the other.
Omigosh, I haven't seen this in forever! 😅 Just something goofy to laugh at with a great cast with cameos from alot of notables. Yes, check out #2, it's better I think. Since you've done this, y'all gotta check out "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" & "Hooper". Then...if you're ready for super cliché spy films, add "Our Man Flint"!!😂
You need to watch Gumball Rally. These movies are based on a real race called The Cannonball Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. A race from Connecticut to California in the quickest time. The last one I remember was 32 hours. Santa
Might suggest you a great Movie for a reaction… Sociedad de la Nieve “ Society of the Snow “ from director : Juan Antonio Bayona… (2023) nominated for Oscars but deserved to win some! Get the Original Spanish version with Subtitles… it’s way Better! Nothing to do with past “U.S.” Version who was over the ridiculous! Thanks…
I’m curious how many folks she knew? Sammy and Dean? Right before the van exploded the driver was Joe Klecko DT for the Jets when they were called the NY Sack Exchange. Jamie Farr from MASH is the Arab billionaire.
This movie was basically a retelling of The Gumball Rally. I too haven’t seen it in so long. This movie has to have the biggest cast in movie history. A ton of famous people in it. Now you guys should watch Hooper.
I would watch this and the 2nd one any time they came on cable TV. They both had so many big celebrities from that time period. I actually like the second one better. They are both just silly humor, but I love Burt and Dom's chemistry. I hope you do watch CB II. I know for sure David would like it.
Yes the is a Cannonball Run 2 and it has most of the cast came back including Burt, Dom, Sammy, and Dean with a few new faces it's more of the same. Just a fun car chase movie. Fun fact: Roger Moore playing a guy pretending to be Roger Moore while also playing music that sounds very close to the James Bond theme almost got them sued by MGM for copyright. In fact because this movie Bond actors are now contractually obligated not to do parody's of James Bond.
The Cannonball Run actually copied an earlier movie, from 1976 which I always liked better. The Gumball Rally. The Cannonball Run was the name of an actual illegal cross country race tho and Burt Reynolds and all the star power made this much more successful.
LOVED this went it first came out. Great choice, as I have not seen many reactors do this one. If you want to see "the original" race across America, try "The Gumball Rally".
There is a CannonBall Run 2, a lot of the same cast had returned. Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke) will be an addition to the sequel & more laughs to come in the second movie
So you asked if the car really moves while the engine is reving the answer is yes. Those big block engines had incredible torque and the motor would move when raved. And if the car had worn out shocks the car would move even more!!!Cheers
Jackie Chan did NOT like his character in this movie, and didn't come back to the US for quite a while. He was a big star in China, and felt he was treated like a noob and a caricature
The second Cannonball Run wasn't as good as this one. The second Smokey and the Bandit was pretty good, but definitely skip the third. For a little more serious Hal Needham movie, check out his TV movie Death Car on the Freeway.
The blooper reel here was the first and I hear that Jackie Chan got the idea here to use it in his future movies. There is a sequel and in my opinion it is even better than the first one. Even more ridiculous and funny than the first with many of the actors returning and a bigger budget.
There is a Cannonball Run 2. It is mostly the same cast. Jamie Farrs character plays a bigger role in the second one. For old Burt Reynolds movies along these lines, I would highly suggest Stroker Ace.
Did you know the Cannonball Run 2's theme song was by the Latin boy band Menudo that had a teenage Ricky Martin? That group went through 30 members, their history is ridiculous!
No way!!! Really?!?! I loved Menudo growing up. I actually found a Ricky Martin cd this weekend and was excited to listen to it again. Now I really have to watch part 2! - Toni 🤓
14:50 This happened in the real Cannon Ball. Also drivers dressed as clergy also happened in the real race. This movie is a little over to top compared to the real race.
