Sadly, Jimi's no longer with us. On the other hand, one could argue that Jimi showed us the way, and people like GG took that and ran with it :)

This. People always prattle on about all these various guitarists being the "greatest" simply 'cause they're household names, when guys like Guthrie can play circles around them with their eyes closed. Yeah, guys like Guthrie were no doubt inspired by all those household names, but that doesn't change the fact they've all been surpassed ages ago.

Hmmmm. A little bit of material avarice on his part might have given the World another EVH style household name virtuoso. Instead we have a few YT videos and a smattering of sessions spread across a handful of virtually unknown albums by a very narrow selection of obscure (to the general public) artists. For someone of Guthrie's incredible abilities, we have remarkably few great albums. He might be the ''Guitarist's Guitarist'', but that's like being a mailman who only delivers mail to other mailmen.

I got to hang out with Guthrie last week at the Petrucci camp. What a fantastic guy! He is music personified. He's an amazing teacher as well, and the way he communicates his ideas and concepts is just one of a kind. He had this impromptu 2am jam with a french horn player in the hotel lobby that just made my year. Such a beautiful moment. You could really tell that playing music makes him happy, and he in turn makes everyone around him happy. Such an inspiration.

I was going to go to one Uni and after seeing him at the basement followed him to another city, and changed my course just so I could be taught by him. Its weird to think without the desire to be taught by this guy I would not have the family I do, the friends I have, or be in the bands I'm in. In rock perhaps yes, it is becoming increasingly more and more rare as hordes of new players that can't really play yet have "mastered" a technique or two and feel the need to put it on full display because in reality it's all they got. It's sad. However in classical and jazz it's rarely if ever even spoken about because it's rarely if ever an issue. People have been playing fast melodic lines for centuries, it's about time the rock community catches up! Rock on Guthrie!

I want to remind you that, incredible though GG is, almost every amazing player in the world can't do what he does. Gilmour, May, Knopfler, Clapton, Page, Young, Bonamassa . . . and then moving into the specifically technical players there's Vai, Malmsteen, Batio, Johnson perhaps . . . you don't _need_ to be able to do what GG does to absolutely kick ass.

This man is the most technically sound and accomplished guitarist of all time (IMO). The amount of knowledge he has and the way he interprets with such articulation is such a bliss. He is so very talented and a master of the instrument that he holds and yet he is insanely humble. The way he explains with such class and distinction is truly praiseworthy. The term "guitar god" tends to get thrown around very loosely these days, however, I think Guthrie is genuinely a musical god, a guitar genius. He literally can adapt to any style of playing, at any speed. Not only does he adapt, but he excels and dominates any of those styles. I particularly love when he transitions from jazzy licks, to a tasty blues lick :). So glad musicians like him exist. Gives me so much inspiration to keep practicing.

All good points, but I think he could strike a balance between constant touring and taking the time to share his wisdom with the world via RU-vid, as long as it's lucrative. Granted, there is no rush like performing for thousands of people (I've had that chance on occasion) but I would wager that his videos reach more folks in more countries than any tour could (look at the Views for this video!) Consider his age as well - he has a lot of touring years left but it doesn't hurt for him to star thinking about his 50's and 60's. YT is much easier on the muscles and joints than touring:)

That way he communicates his heart so flawlessly, like an excited child...like a teacher, like a maestro...and an absolute master of the game. It;s ALWAYS a pleasure watching him speak as much as play. Everything he says holds much value and the way his eyes lighten up during some phrases makes you realise that it all comes from the heart. My early career followed such a similar trajectory it actually freaks me out a bit. The only differences are my first performance I was 6, not 5, and I got offered a place at Oxford to do English Literature, but took a "year out" to go to the Guitar Institute (all the while knowing I didn't want a year out, I wanted a lifetime out.) I totally agree about technique and theory as well: You can't know too much, or too little. I dig that you two gents are trying to be as polite as possible to all your young viewers.. but seriously, it's absolutely correct that modern marketing and hyperactive culture is losing something very important. The attention span thing seems to be more and more kids are having to constantly distract themselves from daily living, from their relationships with others, from questioning their own reality.. basically. The 'religious experience' Guthrie talks of when listening to great music as a child is part of this self investigation, wondering what everything's all really about - I had exactly the same experience and still do when I listen to great music or observe any great art forms. Music is more and more being cut up into easy to market bitesize chunks, even bands are mostly trying to write in order to be commercial.. great bands used to just purely try to express themselves and fight with studios to get it out there - Queen spent ages fighting to stop Bohemian Rhapsody being cut down into some radio trash and so on. It IS detrimental to people's total and potential experience but also quiet, contemplative revelation while experiencing music. The more the brain gets force fed little commercial nibbles the more conditioned it becomes to crave that and so becomes more and more shallow-minded. Yes, the commercial drive behind the music industry has always been there, but it's bloated out of all proportion over the decades and now the industry controls the music.. the music used to direct the industry. A lot of people don't even like to discuss this sort of thing - in any field of modern life - because they've never experienced this sort of 'religious experience' or whatever you want to call it, with music or film or anything - all they know is basic frivolity, pleasure seeking, repetition, catch-phrase culture and cheap distraction in pleasure etc. Anything more, because they have no experience or understanding of anything more, they automatically shove into a corner called 'pretentious' or something. Pretentious music is music written with a pretense of being great when it isn't. If it IS great, emotive, complex art that delivers and has the skill to back it up then it's not pretentious, it just is something that requires more quietude, maturity, attention and passion to listen to and appreciate. When you're a child you haven't been conditioned so much into any narrow-mindedness and you're naturally much more open to give your full attention to things.. unless you're being fed diets of sugar and so on.

Two things that come to mind, is that Guthrie didn't get the opportunity to confirm my belief, that there was probably not much else in the household for him to play with other than the guitar - these days children have so many distractions, like The Captain's own daughter. Secondly, I totally agree with you, and suggest that what you're referring to is a kind of meditation, being in that meditative state, enjoying the whole recording experience, from album cover, album art and the music and ceremony of playing that album playing ritual, has all but gotten lost.

Austin Dyer cracking comment. Gg is clearly exceptionally intelligent and dare I say it , logical. Virtually a Vulcan. In a good way.

Austin Dyer To be honest, I think you are wrong, at least in part. First, it is not true that today the industry controls the music. You might say that the industry controls commercial music, but that's a totally different thing. Today's music is much more varied than in the past, basically everything exists. The fact that innovative and experimental bands are not as popular as they used to be in the 60s and 70s doesn't mean that there's nothing left. All over the world there are thousands of great bands that make good, complex and inspiring music and that also carries a message. Whatever you may like exists, you only have to look for it. Second, I also disagree with your idea that today's young people do not like (or are not able to) having that "religious experience" you associate with music. I agree with the idea that today listening to music is much different than it used to be in the past, but that doesn't mean that it is worse or it is not as good of an experience as before. Now I can listen to Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, Genesis and whatever else with just one single playlist, without having to change a cd or a vynil, but I can still listen to one full album if I want to. Besides, there are other forms of art that people "use" to achieve that kind of experience, such as movies, photography, tv series and even videogames. A lot of them are much more profound and complex than you may think at first glance. It's normal that less people enjoy music differently than in the past, because today there is much more choice. Maybe there is someone who feels the same way as you do when listening to The Dark Side Of The moon when they watch movies. Or leaf through a photography book, or go to a theatre. The fact that people live differently than in the past doesn't mean that their experiences and emotions are less powerful and profound.

I loved the tonal variations he got out of it. It had this thickness to it that the Charvel just didn't have and it sounded awesome.

I forget exactly what it's called but there's a channel on youtube with a bunch of videos of Guthrie playing to some backing tracks and he uses a bunch of different guitars than his sig like a Les Paul, 335, and maybe a strat if I remember correctly.
