Your excitement for this book is infectious! This was already on my TBR, but now it will have to be my next read. Will’s other series are pretty good, but I think Cradle is still his best. I liked Traveler’s Gate, but they were Will’s first books so the prose is a bit clunky and sometimes cringy. Elder Empire is ok, but I wasn’t a big fan of the parallel trilogy structure. Both series have really interesting magic systems and world building. And they’re in the same universe as Cradle, so you may notice some cosmere-esque Easter eggs.

Oh dude that First Binding fake out was something else. Absolutely killed me! The Captain didn't land quite as well for me but it really was a ton of fun. We might even see the sequel late this year too.

Great review. Echoed many of my feelings. I highly recommend the Elder Empire series by Will Wight if you liked the captain. I would recommend reading the Sea trilogy first as it follows the "pirate" guild crew and has similar vibes to the Captain with regards to crew characters.

I will have to check this out! I love Will Wight's Elder series where he wrote two consecutive series from the protagonist and antagonist point of view. It's so interesting to read a book from the 'good guy's perspective and then turn around and read a book about the same exact plot from the 'bad guy's perspective. This sounds like it has a little of the flip concept.

After rereading Cradle and then this one, I've started a re-read of the Elder Empire series. It's much less polished than even Cradle and much more experimental, but still quite fun.The wild gimmick of it is that it is two trilogies where each pairing of books happen simultaneously and can be read in any order you like (213465, for example). they also each consist half in the present and half in flashback, back and forth. Very interesting, although with its own pros and cons, since either book you pick will spoil elements of the other, but it's fun to explore that spoiler, like a reread.

I'm halfway through this book now and it's so fun. For the love of God, I'm begging you, please read Will Wight's Elder Empire series too if you haven't already. It's SO SO good and I like both trilogies even though you only have to read one or the other.

Thanks fot the review Matt, 2023 was a bad reading year for me. It was a miss after a miss to the point I fell into a bad reading slump for 4 months and I didnt read for that period. I picked up the first cradle book few days ago and that book reignited the love for reading again. I also just purchased The Captain on my kindle and cant wait to get into it.

If you like your space fantasy, especially focused around ships and their functions alongside magic, I'd recommend Starship's Mage by Glynn Stewart. It sits alongside Harry Potter and The Expanse as one of the only book series I've read back to back, without something else in between.

I disagree that this is better than any cradle book, however I did enjoy it a lot. For me the book could have been better as a longer epic. There are too many parts that gloss over or summarize what happened. Will does tend to cut out as much fluff as he can, which usually works in his favor, but this time I would have appreciated some more detail. Don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy the book, but I'll take a Reaper or Wintersteel over it.

Just barely. There wasn't a big "AHA" moment like in Reaper, but the book as a whole was a better story in my opinion. Both books are top, top tier though.

Really enjoying your videos Matt. I have to say, I tried this audiobook on your recommendation and really struggled, going to DNF after about 20%. The main character didn't make much sense to me - he's introduced as a near God-like power, yet seems in dire straits against a bunch of goons soon after. It really took me out of the story. His motivation also isn't particularly compelling - he just seems bored and aimless. I really wanted to enjoy it but a miss for me unfortunately. I'll try some more of your recommendations and hopefully will vibe with some of them :)

The only hope I have, being I just finished waybound, is that all of his series tie in somehow. Mostly due to the fact I'm so invested in the imaginary relationship I've come to have with the team from the cradle series. I feel as though they are part of me now. And hopefully he transfers the ability to create such bonds in his other books as well. I have only just found and completely consumed myself in his writing. And I hope my anticipation for his other books isn't going to fall short of expectations. But hearing what you've said was enough for me to get this book. And I have to say I'm excited to dive head first into it. Thanks for this review (and not spoiling it). Great job, keep it up. You've got a new subscriber with this video.

I love how much "practice" you can see that he's had that's paid off in spades with his previous books. It kind of sucks that he's most famous for his work in the progression fantasy space because this isn't that, and I feel like that alone will put a bad taste in his fans mouths and skew the reviews a bit.

I know im late to the party, but I dont really understand the hype behind it. It was a fun read for sure, but at the end of the book I didnt feel attached to the characters at all. They were all pretty 1 dimensional and lot of things within the story didnt make sense at all. It really just seemed like he wrote whatever came to mind with no thought behind it. It was a fun read, but certainly not worth the raving reviews it has. A massive step down from Cradle in pretty much every facet.

I'm a bit miffed. This review got me all hyped up, but then I ended up hating the book. I tend not to DNF, but I just couldn't do it with this one. I won't go too deep into it, but my biggest issues with the story are the thin characterization, glossy superficiality of all the sci-fi and fantasy elements, and cringe-inducing writing style. Also, I tend to visualize a lot as I read, but for some reason it was very difficult to do that with this book. I couldn't get immersed in the story. I'm wondering if anyone else had a similar experience. Does this mean Will Wight is not for me? Seems like a super nice dude, so that would be a shame.
