I’m going to drive a FORMULA car upside down in a tunnel. BUT, as I said in the last video, we know an F1 car isn’t right for Project Inversion.
This is the story of how we found the perfect car to drive upside down, how we made it produce more downforce than an F1 car and how we overcame a multitude of design problems, many of which you might not have thought about.
But first, a bit more on why F1 cars aren’t right for this crazy stunt, and how much downforce, relative to the car’s mass, do we actually need to create?

@shogunofsorrow787 still, you're going to be upside down for less than 5 seconds and that's being VERY generous, it's probably going to be closer to 1 second due to the speeds needed to achieve a "barrel roll", really the biggest concern here is getting the math of the ramp and needed speeds right. I don't even see why this is still in question. The car generates downforce by moving air over its wings. The faster it goes, the more force is generated. At a certain point, the down force generated will surpass the gravitational force of the car's actual weight. The 2 combined is what the car would weigh on a scale in motion. Now invert the car. Subtract the gravitational weight from the total. As long as the car generates more down force(when it's upside down) than it has gravitational weight, it will continue to drive upside down. We watch airplanes do this every day, but somehow, this is still a debate.

A Formula 1 car can do that. in fact, even a Porsche 956 would have coped with this after accelerating to 321 km / h, but a very long tunnel is needed, which will allow the car to smoothly turn upside down.to build such a tunnel, you need to spend a lot of money, since 300 km / h is about 83.3 meters per second, it takes several minutes to perform the maneuver, the length of such a tunnel will be at least 20 kilometers, and the real one is most likely more than 50, since you need to turn very smoothly without loss of speed.

Okay, but you also have to think about oil control in the engine and to some extent the gearbox and also the brake and clutch master cylinders. The biggest issue with the f1 car would be the expense of modifying the expensive components. I hope you get everything sorted. That would be cool to watch. But it sounds like a lot of effort getting the fuel and oil to work upsidedown just to go upsidedown for a few seconds and tell people you did.

You will need every bit of 0* camber after calculations of the weigh of the vehicle and it's down force. Stickiest compound tire. Achieving traction to overcome the weight of the car pulling down and get enough downforce to keep it up will be your biggest issue. 4wd would definitely help.

Bro said FSAE and I immediately thought about him trusting my classmates engineering to go upside down💀 good choice to say no there man, mark can’t tell the difference between shear flow and tensile stress and you’d be trusting the suspension he designed from scratch😮‍💨

Would need underbody aero to really do this…something from Atlantic or Indy. Would be very challenging to set it up properly, however.

Where do you even begin to build a one time use upside down race track? The logistics of the track alone seem like an absolute nightmare.

Dont forget to make it where the engine can work upside-down if you're upside-down for a while. You dont want the engine running without the oil doing its job

Almost all engines wont run when upside down, even with dry sump gravity is used to move the oil back down the motor and having it run in reverse ia going to be one of the biggst problems to get over

Bro Brabham BT46B should just stick to the Ceiling with enough engine revs. It's like a Vacuum cleaner suction to the ceiling. This Fan-Car was just a beautiful piece of engineering.
