Crazy, because I just watched a vid about Bob Ross before I watched this video - and I had them opened in different tabs to watch in order. I was thinking that this guy has a way of dealing with things and of talking about them that is just engaging enough without being like "the other guys". Thank you, Car Wizard.

it's typically not the mechanic it's the shop he works for. Electrical problems don't pay well so it's a fix the fucking issue and get it out the door. There's typically very little money in parts so we're forced to kick them out the door as soon as we kind of figure out the issue. Not all of us do high-end work that can subsidize days lost tracing an electrical issue.

Had a first gen neon that would intermittently pop the fuel pump fuse. Checked the pump, checked the wiring, checked the O2 sensor that shared the circuit with the pump, nothing. Finally it hard faulted, once it did that I could see a short to ground on the circuit, started unplugging things until all I had left was wiring and finally was able to find it. The car had been in one of the many Houston floods and at some point the rear seat was removed (presumably to remove the carpets and jute) and during reinstall the harness that runs under the seat was displaced and was chaffing on the bottom of the seat. After I found it, we realized the common factor to when the fuse would pop, was somebody in the back seat. Give me a hard fault any day over an intermittent one!

My 09 Crown Victoria recently overheated so I had a different guess, but my experience with Fords and the symptoms you described told me that it WASN'T the leaking or bad heater core that I had. In my case, I did not have a coolant "geyser", I just had a "check engine" light, "water temp" light, and the coolant temperature gauge was nearly at "H".

I really like those switched test relays. It's a common problem for the fan motors to start drawing to many amps. I've changed a few on that generation and earlier Fords. I'VE had them just completely fail and stop turning also. I remember someone in the used car business telling that tip about turning the heater on when your car overheats years ago it's a good tip.

Electrical issues can be so aggravating, because you can't easily see the problem like with mechanical issues or leaking fluids. Whether I'm working on my house or figuring out a vehicle issue, electrical problems require more logic and thinking. That's a handy little relay switch tool there. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

My scariest failure is a tie between the following: 1. Losing everything electronic in my E36 as I was getting off the freeway. Alternator died and the motor was still running somehow, but absolutely no electronics-no turn signals, no tach or speedo, no flashers, nothing. Easy fix, but that moment of looking down and knowing I had no brake lights was scary. 2. Audi A3 that wouldn't regen the DPF to clean it out and went into limp mode. Wouldn't go more than 30 in a 55 backroad up a hill with no shoulder and a line of cars behind me. That was fun. Thankfully got it to regen just fine. But man those cars are finicky.

Had overheating issue on a 2006 Mustang GT I bought new. I changed the thermostat and removed the radiator and had it cleaned. No luck. Changed radiator cap. No luck. Bought new fan assembly. No luck. Changed fan relays and no luck. I could start the car and idle it all day in driveway and the fan would kick in and work perfect. However, when I drove it and then stopped and idled it, the fan would not work then. It would not come on then even with the AC turned on and it’s supposed to come on whenever the AC is turned on. I was baffled and so were other people. No codes, nothing! I was about to buy a new computer when I decided to take apart the engine fuse box. There are 3-4 bolts you loosen and then you can lift up the relay holding section. Once I did that I saw that the wire that runs into the high speed fan relay was burned and the plastic connector was burned!! I had to get a new fuse box. I came across other Mustangs 05-09 with the exact same problem. I don’t know what caused that to happen but it was very frustrating. I was researching this issue for hours and hours. Each time it overheated while trying to solve this I would always shut it down right away. It don’t seem like I damaged anything as the car runs and sounds perfect. And these cars actually are designed so that if it was to run completely out of coolant it would go into limp mode. Nonetheless I don’t like the fact that it did get hot a few times. One of the most frustrating car issues I ever encountered! My dad in his mid 60s said he had a lot of vehicles and never had one where he had to change the engine fuse box. Electrical problems can be a nightmare.

@@newfie-dean5803 how did you fix the problem?
@newfie-dean5803
@newfie-dean5803 2 года назад
@@robertswift6101 got a salvage wire harness with the connectors on it that connect into the engine bay fuse box. Got the salvage fuse box too. Cut the connector I needed off this salvage harness and unpinned each wire in it. Then with my burned connector still attached to the car I removed each individual wire from it and re-pinned it to the new connector. I did it wire by wire to keep track of where each wire went. At the end I had all wires removed from the old one and re-pinned into the salvage connector. Doing it this way kept the wiring all original except the one wire to the fan relay that had burned (causing the issue) and had to be spliced in with the same wire cut from the salvage harness. I then installed the salvage box connecting all of the wire harness connectors into the bottom of it. There are 3-4 connectors but I only had one of them burn so that’s the only one that had to be re-pinned with a new connector. The only thing changed on the wiring was that one burned wire spliced in. All other wiring stayed the same and the plastic connector was changed by re-pinning wires to the salvage one as some of the old connector had melted.

My scariest car malfunction was a master cylinder failure on my f250. It was going out and I was an idiot for not replacing it sooner, I would just do 2-3 pumps of the pedal and it would stop just fine. Well one day I’m backing up to unload junk and there’s a guy behind my truck I hit the brakes and to the floor, I hit it again to the floor, thankfully I was going slow, I slammed it in 1st gear and got it in and let the clutch out to stop the truck. That guy was 10 ft away from getting squashed. Scared the hell out of me, he didn’t realize I had lost my brakes so it didn’t bother him. I once drove my Jeep Cherokee home 5 miles with no brakes, no emergency brake. It sounds much more terrifying than my f250 experience but driving it home 2mph in 2nd gear low range 4x4 idling took an extra 20 minutes but was like a road trip on cruise control. I even went down a mountain grade in 1st low range 7% 1 1/2 mile. I thought for sure I’d have to shut the engine off, it maintained 2 mph downhill idling no brakes, I figured worst case I’d turn it off and if it continued to gain speed I’d turn it into the woods and jump out.

The fan will run on a very high speed. The fan will actually drain a fully charged battery. Tons of warning lights. Srs,abs seatbelt warning extra etc. navigation turns off if on.but if I start the car with the driver side door closed np problem with the fan runs at normal speed no warnings at all. What I do now is to made sure the driver side door is closed before I start the engine. I don’t know if the passenger side door does the same. I checked google and various Benz forums some drivers describe the same problem but no causes have been found. It’s something with the driver side door being open while starting the engine.

Same problem with the HVAC blower on the 2001-2007 Chrysler minivans with the automatic climate control. The blower motor gets old and burns out the transistor that regulates the fan speed. You MUST replace the blower motor AND the "blower control module" otherwise you'll just have another blown transistor on the blower control module.

Drove 25 miles home at 12:00am, decided to give her hell on a really straight road about 2 miles from my house. 80-90mph the driver's side t-top just flies off, no warning, no whistling sound on the drive home, thought it was latched in. I experienced nearly the same issue on the Mercedes 190e 2.3, which had a dedicated fuse for the radiator fan. They blow without warning or alert , the fan stops, and slowly the temp rises until you blow the engine.

one time my car was overheating while sitting idle in traffic but once it started moving the temp would fall back to normal again. It was at night and I was far away from any mechanic. It got to a point where it would overheat within minutes of driving. Upon opening the hood the problem was clear: There was a tiny hole on the radiator spewing coolant very slowly. Ran to a nearby store got a couple of eggs, used the egg white method, topped it up with water and it never overheated again until I got the car to a mechanic.

Yay I was right. I said thermostat or radiator fan. Shouldn’t turning the A/C on make the fan go on high?

I purchased a brand new 1988 Lincoln Town Car for livery work. It started overheating at around 15K miles and loosing coolant but there were no obvious leaks. It ran fine under local driving but would overheat at sustained highway driving. Long story short, it turned out to be a cracked engine block. The high pressure would blow the coolant out through the defect in the block resulting in the overheating. Ford replaced the engine block under warranty but I lost use of the car for a couple of weeks while they diagnosed and repaired the issue.

I guessed the fan because if your driving it the thermostat would have stuck open not a problem till winter,a leak would have been more obvious to the owner,and no mention of the car blowing white smoke out the exhaust rules out the head gasket.

Scariest: Mini Moke left hand side driveshaft spline shearing off at 80kph. Left hand wheel went spinning off into the bush as the car hit the deck and scraped along the road. Fortunately, we here in Australia drive on the correct side of the road so I didn't end up in oncoming traffic. The bugger of it was that it sheared off on the wheel side of the CV joint. Nothing short of x-raying the damn thing would have indicated it was going to do this. No injuries. Not even underwear. Look up a Mini Moke and see why I nearly died :-)

Never assume an overheating issue is a common problem, or even any part. I replaced a water pump (and thermostat) on a Chrysler Concorde, it already had a new radiator cap, no leaks. The issue was that I used water in the system with a coolant cleaner. Well this car operates at such a high temperature, that it boiled the water at 16 psi, going down the road at 50 mph. I knew it wasn't a fan issue either since the car was moving when it ran into the issue. The 50/50 mix of coolant is required just to give it that little extra boiling protection. I have done the heat on high when the radiator fan isn't working, and also on another car that the radiator cooling fins were gone. It works, but you have to hurry to not overheat yourself.

Scariest car malfunction? Wiper blades! It may sound simple but I decided to road trip across the USA and I somehow forgot to inspect my wiper blades. It was pitch dark at the New Mexico, Arizona border, with thunderstorms. And I couldn’t see anything! Wiper blades were worn and were making visibility worse.

My scariest car malfunction? Might be the false alarms of safety assistent systems. I drove the company car of my boss and it has an "active" lane assist. The active part means that it puts force on the steering to direct you to what it thinks is safe. Trouble was that sometimes it decided that the wall of a tunnel would be the right thing to go into, and the biggest scare i got when i changed lanes in a "corner" while doing 130km/h... If you are blinking the whole time, no problem, but i used the "tip blinking function" which means the car blinks 3 times (the distance to other cars was big enough that the blinking was to satisfy the law and more important for good manners) but the lane change took longer than the 3 blinks so while not finished with the lane change the active lane assist put force on the steering to the outside of the corner (midcorner) which was scary. I mean in that speed almost mid corner such a wiggle is not fun in a van. Or when cars brake because the automatic baking assists think there is something you are going to hit when there is nothing...

my scariest malfunction has to be when I was younger, driving my dad's Mercury Sable. I didn't know very much about cars back then and I didn't know that his car had a weird electrical issue where random lights would go on and off in the dash, and the speedometer needle would bounce up and down even when sitting at a stoplight. Young me back then had no idea that this was just an electrical issue, so I thought the car was breaking in all sorts of ways while I had been driving, scared me good.

The guy said coolant was coming out. Where was it coming from? Overflow bottle? And on my car, the heater valves fail all the time, so I have a modified coolant hose in the car that just jams the engine heater output straight back into the input.
