Remington 870 Tips & Tricks #3: The Care and Feeding of Choke Tubes:
Dusting a case of clays is an enjoyable and relaxing way to pass a beautiful January afternoon. If you neglect your firearm however, that afternoon could take a turn for the frustrating.
In this video, I'll go over proper cleaning and lubrication of screw-in choke tubes, and give some tips for speeding up cleaning, safe handling of lead residue, tool-less installation & removal of choke tubes, and how to use a paste lubricant to pre-lube the threads for easy switching in the field.
It's finally done! The "lost" 870 T&T # 3 video fell victim to hardware failure back in January, and the final render of the video and most of its constituent files could not be recovered. I have re-shot the missing video, re-wrote and re-recorded the voice-over, and re-assembled the piece.
I recommend watching this video with the annotations turned on. I'll be adding various notes to provide further details, or answer questions you might have. I've tried to keep them unobtrusive; no giant flags blocking the video, no begging for subscriptions or likes.
Your Remington 870 owner's manual lists the steps for taking down and cleaning of the rest of the gun. It really isn't that complicated, and the 870 does not require an obsessive amount of cleaning. For a video showing details, I recommend watching Patriot36's demonstration:
Part 1: • Remington 870 Full Cle...
Part 2: • Remington 870 Full Cle...
My cleaning method isn't quite the same as his; I use some different products and tools, and tend not to lubricate as heavily, but I also use my gun differently. The truth is, everyone tends to develop their own personal cleaning practices, depending on their situation. It's fine to use different methods or products; but I would still recommend his videos because he shows very clearly and simply how to take the gun down, and which parts need attention during a full clean.
This continues my series of how-to videos with the Remington 870 shotgun. There are a number of other topics I have planned for future videos, but it's a fluid list. I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have for video topics. If it's something that I feel has already been thoroughly covered, I may point you elsewhere, but if it's an interesting and feasible idea, I'll add it to the list.
If you have any questions about this video, please ask in the comments below. Like many things in life, guns can be dangerous if used improperly, so make sure you understand what you're doing before you work on yours. If you're uncomfortable trying anything you see here yourself; please get assistance.
I'd also appreciate any comments on the format of this series; things you liked, things you didn't like, things you'd like to see done differently, etc. I'm still playing around with styles and programs, figuring out what works, what works well, and what doesn't work at all, so any input would help me out.

Your video's are great and well made. I am new to shot guns and you have answered many of my questions on your videos. Also, I've noticed you are are very responsive to questions on the forum. Thanks for taking time to answer questions that seem simple to experienced users, but mean everything to newbies and hopefully save us from sating money and or trashing our weapons.

Nice video. Your presentation was quite nice. Very straightforward, without the rambling that I tend to do in my videos. :) I was looking for info about Briley chokes and just stumbled upon this video. Even though I know this stuff, I checked it out anyway because I always find someone throwing out some info I have missed in my years. Thanks for taking the time to make this. Have a good one, and safe shooting.

Those choke keys usually slip on me and booger up the notches in the tubes. I really like the old style Remington "crank handle" wrenches like the one you showed in the video. They seem to get a better "bite" than the flat key style and they also work on Benelli flush mounted chokes.

@SynchronizorVideos 9 лет назад
+stan6818 If you can't get a good enough grip to tighten your chokes with just a finger, try using a coin in the slots on the end, or get one of those flat choke keys. I keep a choke key on my keychain these days because I got tired of getting soot all over my finger during range sessions where I changed chokes frequently. Another option is extended choke tubes. Not those expensive ones with porting and what-not, but just tubes that are about a half-inch or so longer, with knurled ends that let you get a good grip for hand-tightening. I have one of these with a light constriction that works well for slugs & buckshot, and it's really nice. Helps protect the barrel's muzzle, too.

You could try immersing the end of the barrel in a penetrating lubricant for a while, and then try breaking it loose with a choke wrench. Or you can take it to a gunsmith, they should be able to pop it out for you pretty quick.

I got a Rem 870 for trap shooting. Near as I can tell, the 870 I have is a fixed choke. Do you know what the inside diameter of a barrel with a full choke is? I saw a DVD where they showed that you couldn't even insert a dime in the end of the barrel with a full choke installed. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to dump the barrel I have for one with an interchangeable choke, because I'm not hitting the birds well at all. Thanks!

I thought in a couple of web searches that an 1100 barrel was for the 870 that only takes 2 3/4 shells (shows how little I know). OK, so then replacement (Cabela's wants $190 for a new barrel with RemChoke), or an eBay listing for fixed Full Choke (the ones I've seen want almost as much as a new one), or a call to the local gunsmith for barrel threading look like my main options. Mine is a 1968 model (I think) after some searching. Good shape for that vintage. Thanks again!
@1978PLHS
@1978PLHS 11 лет назад
Thanks for your information! I don't know that I'll even try to find out what bore it is - I can stick a dime in there and rattle it hard enough to make a fairly loud click. So I'm guessing .715 or maybe even .720. Probably not ideal for Trap. Replacing it, what do I need to know regarding compatibility? Mine is a Wingmaster, 2 3/4 shells, 28", so it's an 1100 I think. What do I look for? Modifying the existing for screw in chokes (at Brileys) would exceed $200.

I am new to threaded barrels and I just bought one for my 870. Without knowing (I should've watched this video first) I ran a BORESNAKE VIPER through the barrel with the choke tubed removed, I did this twice. The barrel is nice and shiny clean inside but I am worried that I ruined the threads. I looked at them with a light and they look the same as they did before I ran the boresnake. However I'm still worried that I ruined the threads. Is this a big deal or am I worrying for nothing?
@SynchronizorVideos

A boresnake shouldn't hurt the threads, especially if you only did it once or twice.

I've noticed in previous video's that you have repurposed old prescription bottles and while I've noticed that from your entire series others may not have. Given the sensitive mood in the country over people on medication with guns it might be wise too make sure they don't show up in more of your video's. I say this because I noticed the medication bottles with your shotgun in the intro too this video and I applaud the message in most of your vid's to be a positive rep for the shooting community. That aside keep up the spectacular series.
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 10 лет назад
A lot of folks take prescription meds these days, and it's almost always for pretty benign reasons. Heck, some doctors'll even write you a prescription for excessive junk food consumption or fidgeting nowadays. BS, yes, but not very threatening. Rest assured that if I had serious drug abuse problems I wouldn't have a police-issued concealed pistol license in my wallet, and my doctor - who's fully aware of my hobbies and comes to me with questions or problems with HIS shotguns - wouldn't be writing prescriptions for me. I'm not on a ton of meds, anyway. While it may seem like I have a lot of these bottles lying around, I'm really just a pack rat when it comes to useful containers. A handful of bottles each year adds up if you never throw them out, and I get them from other family members as well. They're just so darn handy and easy to find, I kind of feel obligated to tell folks to hang on to them. Those old film tubes used to be my go-to containers for storing small items, but these pill bottles are a lot easier to find these days, and they work better. They're see-through, conveniently-sized, easy to use, easy to label, air/water-tight, and nearly everyone in this country either takes meds regularly, or knows someone else who does, so there's a reliable free supply of them. I can understand where you're coming from, and I appreciate the concern. The thought has crossed my mind before. That's a primary reason why - in all but a couple of my early videos - these pill containers have their original labels completely removed. They're just a little more innocuous that way. Ultimately though, if someone's determined to make a stink over the fact that I own firearms, and also take medication when my doctor prescribes it, they probably have bigger issues with gun ownership in general, and I'm not interested in pandering to them.

I came from target shooting & after I disassembled my rem870 exp I saw that my choke (mod) was loose. I did 50 rounds of buck & 20 slug (lead). This was my first time I shot my brand new shotgun & now I see u instslling choke just with your finger. Can the choke fell out of the bore during shooting? Thanks!
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 10 лет назад
Did you check the choke tube before you took the gun out for the first time? It may have been loose right out of the box if someone was messing around with it in the gun store that sold it to you. It is possible for a choke tube to work itself loose under recoil though, so if you're running a lot of shells through your shotgun during a range session or a hunting trip, it's best to check it every once in a while. This is one reason extended choke tubes are nice; you can check and re-tighten them without having to fish out a choke tool or stick your finger into the dirty bore.

My 870 express has wrench I shot it for the first time ant the choke is stuck in there.... What's the best way to get it out?????
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 10 лет назад
Chokes sometimes take a bit of force to break loose, especially if you didn't lubricate it properly before you took the gun out shooting. If you think it's actually stuck though, don't try to force it. If it's just dirty, and not damaged or corroded, you may be able to get it loose by immersing the end of the barrel in a penetrating cleaner or solvent for a while. But if you're not sure what you're doing there, your best choice may be to take it to a gunsmith or a skilled friend. They should be able to get it loose for you and assess any damage.

I know this will sound like a dumb question But... How do you know if you screw in the choke tight enough?
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 9 лет назад
Daniel Perez If you tighten it down good and snug by hand (in the case of an extended choke tube) or with a basic tool like a choke key or a large coin, you should be good. Without a full choke wrench that provides a lot of mechanical advantage, you really have to work hard to over-tighten a choke tube. If you're not sure it's tight enough, check it frequently while shooting to see if it works loose on you.
