It is a shame he didn't get to play more due to injuries in the NHL.

Swede here. Forsberg came home in 09-10 to play for free for MODO, they were risking elimination and bankrupcy. Him and Naslund played without salaries to draw a crowed to a new arena that he had funded. Played 23 games, 11 goals and 19 assists for a total of 30 points.

He’s certainly one of the biggest “what ifs” in the history of the game. I watched a lot of Avalanche games as a kid and got to see him live multiple times as they were in the same division as the Oilers, and I am always surprised at how much time that he actually missed in his career. I look at him as nothing less than one of the all-time greats, despite only putting up 885 career points. The man was one the hardest people to remove from the puck that you will ever see. He would spend entire shifts with the puck, I swear. Even if he wasn’t doing anything that would lead to a goal, your team certainly wasn’t getting to play in the offensive zone for that shift, that’s for sure.
@phillytheflyerable
@phillytheflyerable 6 лет назад
not only that. look at his defensive play. no jagr, ovechkin would tetrive the puck in their own zones, move the puck up the ice and score/assist on a goal. he was all over the ice and still managed to be a 1-point-per game player at worst

Forsberg’s legacy is ahead of Ron Francis. Francis was a great player but Forsberg was a consistent Hart contender in his career.
@1989CW
@1989CW 6 лет назад
You clearly didn't watch Ron Francis play if you think this! Francis is 2nd all time in career assists and 5th all time in points. Forsberg was a great player who had his career shortened due to injury, but he wasnt even the best player on his own team. Francis was the best on multiple teams except for Pittsburgh!
@MikeG82
@MikeG82 6 лет назад
francis is not better than forsberg using numbers you may as well say francis is better than mario if you are going to say career numbers matter that much, obviously he isn't better than mario and he isn't better than forsberg either
@1989CW
@1989CW 6 лет назад
MikeG82 let me guess your someone who doesn't believe in stats? Mario isn't in this conversation an only someone that's ignorant in hockey would bring that up. Mario's stats speak for them self on why he's better then pretty much everyone, but we are talking Francis and Forsberg. What's Next you're going to tell me Paul kariya is better then Sidney Crosby. But you're right very hard to Compare when Francis has more assists then Forsberg has points. Two entirely different careers, two entirely different types of players that shouldn't even be compared. Yet here we are but not allowed to use stats that's funny. Please I can't wait to read your reply to why he's better other then saying he's not better then lemieux.
@MikeG82
@MikeG82 6 лет назад
arguing francis is better than forsberg is stupid and i say this as a penguins fan playing longer and piling up stats does not make a player better than a guy that was arguably the best in the world for a few years your kariya/crosby example makes no sense considering crosby has more career points and has many individual trophies while kariya has nothing, francis has better stats than mario and just as many cups so i don't see the comparison with kariya/crosby show me one ranking list that has francis ahead of forsberg, in honesty i think forsberg is a bit overrated he seems to becomes a better player the longer he's out of the game, but he's still better than francis just like mario is better than francis despite having less numbers on his stat sheet i believe in stats when players are close in talent and peak, for example gretzky and mario are arguably the two best ever but gretzky gets the nod because his stats are much better
@1989CW
@1989CW 6 лет назад
MikeG82 cups is a team sport that has nothing to do with this argument. Just because you and I are pens fans doesn't mean your making a good argument for Forsberg. Yes lemieux and Gretzky are close in comparison. I used kariya and Crosby because they just recently in the last two seasons were very close statistically even though we both know Crosby still has plenty of career left. (This was an arguement circulating around Pittsburgh when Crosby first got hurt) Forsberg was maybe the best in the world for a season if we can even consider that best in the world since he never repeated it and his best season still is less then Francis best season. Yes Forsberg won a hart and art Ross that's certainly an accomplishment unfortunately the season he won it the field wasnt that impressive. Difference between them Francis helped his team win back to back cups Forsberg didn't help his team win both cups. Honestly we are arguing over apples and oranges. Ironically he's the Eric lindros of the Colorado avalanche, a career cut short with plenty of potential that has what ifs surrounding it. Mark messier never won anything his entire career is considered one of the greatest of all time

Most bone headed guy to ever come out of Sweden and play hockey. When you look at his highlights there was absolutely no quit in the man. He shoved through better or worse by punishing his body way too much for way too long but all he ever wanted was to compete in hockey. They say he changed the way north Americans look at Swedish players forever. He played during the hooking era and despite some strong guys' best efforts it took so incredibly much to get him off the puck even if you were playing him dirty.

4:50 - Well you could make a lot of arguments aboy Peter Forsberg's play-style and choise of playing the 04-05 hockey season. BUT in his defence for that choise, he did that out of pure loyalty to his hometown Ornskoldsvik and Modo Hockey, his foster team since childhood, and he allong with several Modo NHL stars, Markus Naslund, the Sedin brothers had near "promised" to win for there team a Swedish championship aka SM-guld. Modo was joined with a lot of NHL star power beside them; Tommy Salo, František Kaberle, Alexander Steen, Adrian Aucoin, Mattias Weinhandl etc so Forsberg & Naslund fully believed they had great tallents to finally win home that championship. But they still had a mediocre season and went swept eliminated in 1st round play-off. Other Swedish teams had great NHL star reinforcments as well so the league was major stacked that lock-out season.

Best player on those Av teams,when healthy. (skaters,I'm not talking about Roy).Sounds crazy,if you didn't live it...clearly Sakic had a much better career,& Blake,& Bourque did also. But Bourque,& Blake did the majority of their greatness elsewhere. You could even argue Hedjuk...but he only had better career,cuz of health,& longevity. Forsberg is still top 5 in pts per game in NHL history,I believe. Assists per game,I think he's higher...maybe 3rd behind Gretzky,& Lemiux? Maybe I'm off a bit,but he's very high on those lists. And he played much of his career in the dead puck,clutch,& grab era. Where Scott Stevens,Matmichuk,Hatcher,etc-were allowed to assault,& batter guys like Forsberg,with no penalty. Forsbergs physical play,meant more injuries. If he played 82 games today,he would probably have 160 points. He missed the last 2 rounds of the 2001 Cup run,then the entire 2002 regular season...came back,& led the entire NHL playoffs in scoring...DESPITE THE AVS NOT MAKING THE FINALS! And was the best Av (other than maybe Roy)- through 5 games,vs the best team I've ever seen...2002 Red Wings. 2001 Avs are the #2 best team I've seen. Keep in mind,I've only followed the NHL closely,since 1995,so I'm not including teams before that. No team,post salary cap can compete with the depth & star power of the great teams of that era...cuz you can't afford to stockpile talent like that with the cap. 2001 Avs had 5 All stars that season,then traded for #6-Rob Blake. Tanguay,Drury,Foote...these guys aren't even on that list... weren't All stars that season. 2002 Wings had already won 2 recent Cups,& had like 6 HOFers...then added like 3 more veteran future HOFers. Plus Zetterburg,& Datsyuk were still babies...like 1st or 2nd year guys. But in 2002,Avs had lost Bourque,& a few other guys. Most people thought they'd lose before the conference finals...both LA,& SJ took us to 7. .Most unbiased hockey observers thought Detroit would win in 4 or 5...hell,I thought that. But due to Forsberg,Drury,& Roy mostly,(I remember Blake played a big role also)-somehow the Avs had 3-2 series lead. We never scored on Hasek again,& lost 2-0,& 7-0,which is what most remember. But it's a shame,cuz that team overachieved,even getting that far,vs that team. They basically came within 1 win of repeating. Avs would've slaughtered Carolina...just as Detroit did in 5. But the superior Red Wings,finally woke up,& found their game...& the Avs just ran out of gas. They were not only the 1st team to go 7,in their 1st 3 series,but had gotten to at least game 6 of the Western Conference Finals,in 6 OUT OF 7 SEASONS! (& won 2 Cups). They were playing in their 4th straight Western Conference Finals. Won the Cup in 2001,but lost game 7 on the road,in 1999,2000,& 2002. That's an unbelievable amount of hockey. Detroit had not only added multiple HOFers,but lost in the 1st round in 2001,& got knocked out in the 2nd round (by Colorado),in 1999,& 2000. So despite being older,Detroit had played far fewer games,the previous 3 years. But don't take my word on Forsberg...ask his HOF opponents. They all respected Sakic,& the rest...but I heard Nick Linstrom on a documentary,(best dman I've seen,cuz I only saw Bourque on the down side,his last 7 yrs or so,& he was in the East,on a bad team-before coming to Denver)-he said Forsberg was the guy they feared most,& the guy they geared up to slow down 1st. I heard Hatcher say something similar. Forsberg was unbelievable. Sakic,& Hedjuk were fabulous...as are McKinnon,Rantanen, Landeskog,Makar,& Toewes today...but Forsberg is still the best Av ever,at his peak. Again,I'm not counting Roy-hes GOAT goalie,& Bourque was amazing,but only an Av,for less than 2 yrs,& at age 40 basically. Blake was a fabulous 2 way dman,but only here a few years,& was never the best player on earth. For 3 or 4 yrs, Forsberg was the best player on earth, despite the constant injuries.

Also, Peter Forsberg is only one out of three NHL players in the Triple Crown Club (twice...) with Larionov and Fetisov (both HOFs). 96/97 was supposed to be his year. I almost threw up when Todd Simpson (a nobody of course) stuck out his leg and got Forsberg in the thigh... had it been the knee - his career would have been even shorter. He was killing it and so much fun to watch that year. Simpson a nobody taking out a HOF.

As a fan of every team based in Michigan, there have been three athletes that made me always sit up on the edge of my seat: Pavel Datsyuk, Barry Sanders, and Peter Forsberg. Only the last one was an "Oh, no!", the other two were with a "Oh, yeah, let's go!"

Yeah if you didnt get to watch peter forsberg, the first thing that comes to mind cause he always did it was he'd have the puck in like the corner n see someone coming to hit him n peter would simple forget the puck n hit the player coming to hit him n then pick the pick the puck up again n he always played like that even in his older age years so yeah not surprised his career wasnt long but he was arguably the best player in the world when he was 100% in his time as sakic was a clutch king but forsberg was the dominant workhorse. I'd compare his style to malkins in his prime but probably a lil better stick handler was forsberg.

Forsberg combined hands with speed and physicality like no player ever. He was so graceful and beautiful to watch and would run you over like a truck. His style of play is not sustainable, but man was he fun to watch. He's the greatest playmaker ever as far as I'm concerned. Joe sakic, Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk was an epic line.

Great video! Though I would argue that the further we get from his era the more his in-game dominance compared to other greats with more games and points is recognized. That's why he was a first ballot hall of famer with no real discussion unlike some of the others you mentioned. If you consider the testimonies of players who played with/against him and that he was 8th all time in ppg playing in the nhl's lowest scoring era his case for the HHOF is pretty clear.

When healthy, Peter Forsberg was one of the best offensive players on the ice in the era of the trap. Had he not accumulated so many injuries in a short period of time, he would have easily passed the 1000 point threshold and could have continued on playing longer than he did. Probably could have played into the early 2010s.

Chris Pronger said on a podcast that Forsberg was his favorite player in the league to battle with. That kind of willingness to battle with one of the biggest and meanest defensemen the sport has ever seen, while also being one of the best point producers of his era and probably the best playoff performer - that's quite a hockey player.

How about an episode on MoDo Hockey and the town Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden with 30 000 residents. That has produced NHL players like: Peter Forsberg, Marcus Näslund, Niklas Sundström, Victor Hedman, Samuel Påhlsson, Daniel & Henrik Sedin, Toby Enström, Mattias Timander, Linus Ullmark, Robert Hägg. Has to be unheard of, that a small town like that produced all these players.

I don’t think that there is another player that has it all. Gretzky and Lemieux didn’t play defense, Gretzky didn’t even tackle. McDavid doesn’t have the grits and the insane mentality like Forsberg. Crosby is the closest far as skills, meanness, grits, mentality puck defense, passing etc. He just doesn’t have the tackling like Forsberg. To me Forsberg easily is #1 - the GOAT. He made everybody else better, helped several teammates to enter the 50 goal club, took on whole teams on his own, kept his point average per game even with all his foot issues, won it all, kept his feet on the ground during success, back-checked and stole the puck a lot, best passer in the game together with Gretzky etc etc etc. There was nothing that he didn’t do. I believe that if he would have stayed healthy Colorado would have won at least 2 more cups. Easy way to figure out who is the GOAT. Imagine 5 clones of your GOAT matched up against 5 of any player. I’d bet my money on 5 x Forsberg against anyone.

@LorentzHallMusic
@LorentzHallMusic 8 месяцев назад
@@Chris-qo4rt Well, to me he is the best passer of all time. He could pass through any amount of sticks, over defenses, perfect landing of the puck, almost always perfectly on the blade of the receiver, succeeded even though defenses KNEW that the pass would come.. Gretzky was also an amazing passer, but I haven’t seen him chip pucks over defenses. As far as best tackler.. He invented the reversed hit and could hit anyone with brutality. What is “the best tackler of all time”? A defenseman? Ovi? Kronwall? I don’t know, but he Kronwalled Kronwall and probably ran over Ovi as well, though I haven’t seen it. Greatest scorer he was not. He never believed in his shot, so he didn’t spend time on trimming it, unfortunately. But I agree with you - He had it all. Probably the most complete player ever.
