Carer Last perfectly captures how it feels to witness the elephants swim - a blend of beauty and chaos. The elephants are not too keen on sharing their waterhole with a large herd of buffalo. Pisa and Lundi quickly take care of the situation, while the rest of the elephants enjoy a relaxing swim.

I've been reading about watering holes in Africa, trying to understand the big picture... Elephants aren't being selfish: they're being wise and keeping it simple. Plus, this herd now has a baby in their midst. Since lions often hang out near buffalo herds to try for little or infirm ones, it's kind of thinking for the group. Love seeing how well this bunch gets along. Thank you for the postcard from Hoedspruit.. With gratitude and love.

That huge buffalo heard is just amazing - what a sight to see them and the eles together! What an encounter! 🐃🐃🐘🐘The swim in the waterholes looks so refreshing - the eles are really enjoying it. 🥰🐘🐘It's so hot in Vienna at the moment, I could also do with a swim at the waterhole and a mud bath! 😄

So nice to see little Phabeni 🐘 out with his family. Pisa 🐘 you were so brave chasing those buffalo 🐃🐃 away. However they were still to close for Lundi's 🐘 comfort so she chased off the rest of the buffalo 🐃🐃 off. It was great to see the Jabulani HERD 🐘 enjoying a swim in the dam. Although Pisa has not shown interest in Baby Phabeni so far based on the videos, she certainly has that inate and acquired protectiveness for the younger members of the herd from her mother and allomothers like Lundi. I am happy to see Phabeni and Fishan with the herd. I hope this means they are both feeling excellent now and no more medical issues. A small episode from 2:45 to 4:45- Zindoga approaches Lundi & requests to get rid of buffalo herd. Lundi moves. Pisa heads Lundi, but stays back shaking her left foreleg and then greets Zindoga with her trunk. Lastly, Zindoga thanks Lundi touching her below her right eye. @herdteam, am I right??

Cutie Pie Pisa never ceases to amaze. She's a little Tokwe in the making. She is exhibiting some real leadership skills. I stand by my conviction that Zindoga and Pisa have a little thing going. Lundi was strutting her stuff today for all to see. It is wonderful the way she will not sit still until all threats to the HERD have maintained a fair distance. It was incredible to see so many buffalo. The lions would have a field day. I saw my Sweet and Beautiful Timisa💞sticking her trunk out. And where is our little movie star, Meisiekind? Preparing for her debut in the forthcoming documentary? LOL Thanks Last for this video. The HERD was having a great time!

I supposed it may have been the dam's muddy water could have made Phabeni worse...maybe, maybe not. I just learned how tenuous a young life can be, while the little elephants are cutting their tusks. My screen froze for a few seconds after Lundi turned forward to enter the water and she was just beautiful. Lundi loves little Phabeni and she would fight anything for him.

Pisa, the elephant Warrior Princess strikes again, making sure those buffalo keep their distance, with Lundi at her side laying down the law. Elephants rule! Buffalo drool. However, soon those elephants will get hungry and go off to browse, so the buffalo will again get their chance to drink and swim.

Is really, really so beautiful not only to see them having fun, but safe. I came across a video in the internet a couple of days ago, and saw a baby elephant with it´s trunk until his face cut out I could see two holes only... I couldn´t beleive, how can ppl be so cruel!!! That broke my heart. This little baby was smaller then Phabeni... I just thought how can this baby survive to eat, splash water, dust on him, even now.. This picture can hardly come out of my head... I wish I hadn´t seen it...

I'm sorry you saw that. If I may, can I tell you about a baby Elephant called Long'uru who lives at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. He was rescued from a well and I believe hyaenas had bitten off his trunk (pls someone correct me if I've got any details wrong) It wasn't due to humans though) Euthanasia was considered but staff desperately wanted to see if survival with ability to eat and drink was possible. The little chap was assigned their most experienced keeper and I'm delighted to tell you Long'uru is fine. He gets down low to eat and dips his head in water to drink. What the future holds I can't say but he will remain at Reteti as he'll never be able to return to the wild. But he's very much part of the herd who love him. A lone baby is sadly a target for hyaenas. I hope this brightens your day a little. Life in the bush can be tragic but there are still wonderful people in the world. 💙🐘💙🙏🏻🙏🏻

This is so unfair to the water buffalo!! BUF, Buffalo Union Federation affiliated with the AFL-CIO, have filed a grievance AND are demanding arbitration from the Carers! Besides, the elephants are greedy and selfish, and need to be taught on waterhole etiquette! Buffalo are people too!!! 🥰

Lundi is very brave and she is so funny when she lets her hair down after once again demonstrating her bravery same for Tomboy Pisa she is an independant and brave little Ellie She likes also the company of her friends Zindoga and Timisa Gentleman Fishan enjoying a good deep with Bubi and Sebakwe protecting little Phabeni who looks so tiny compared to the dominant Bull Dame Setombe and daughter Klaserie arrived boldly against the horde of Buffalos All those Females are very courageous when the security of their Herd and especially of the youngsters is concerned ❤🐘🫶

Well I'd have liked to have seen Phabeni and Fishan more in the video. Phabeni is akways filmed from a distance and not for long. Bit from what I saw he and FishtheMan looked OK. Sassy Lundi and Braveheart Pisa.

An interesting viewpoint today Last ty. It was like we were hiding out behind that tree stump scanning the waterhole 😅🙏💗🐘🐘🐘 When Lundi was wagging here ears back and forth was great!

Awfull to realize that Phabeni isn’t with us anymore, I was so shocked! I realized it wasn’t going very well with him, but not that critical. I think that the heard is shocked too and miss him dearly. And of course the carers and everyone who was very busy to help him get strong and healthy. So sorry for you all

I grew up in the Nevada deserts. They were our play ground. My mom would mix some vinegar with some dirt from our yard and have us rub it up and down our leg's and arms to keep ants and other insects away. She knew we would be all dirty when we got home. So she said it wouldn't hurt to be a little dirty. However she did hose us off before being allowed back in the house. So we can all learn from our animal friends

Would it be possible to get a video about the daily life our herd had before coming to the Jabulani herd? Things like did each elephant have their own special keeper or carer that delt with them specifically? Also what kind of work, activity, and also how were their down times spent? I know we all want to believe it was a good life but reality for a workkmg elephant is rarely what we believe it is. I do believe the carers we have at HERD have either changed or always respected their elephants. If they didnt they would not have stayed once the move was made. Either way it would be interesting to see the differences in their lives, and including the carers lives.

1) What is a "normal" duration of uninterrupted sleep for elephants? 2) Elephants have terrific squirt guns - are they ever used in 1 on 1 play or only as a display at the water holes to discourage interlopers (these are different than the practical use of trunk to throw sand and mud overhead)?

That silent (to us) communication between Zindoga and Lundi before she went off to chase the buffalo away was incredible. It seemed like he thanked her in return. 😮 Also, that little affectionate nudge between Pisa and Zindoga before she went into the water and then he stayed on guard by her❤.
