Hi Bob - Thanks for your thoughtful review and reaction to these talented gals! I am Jim, the organizer, audio/video guy, and vocalist/ pianist/clarinetist of Tori's video of 'We've Only Just Begun'. Her vocal ability is just sublime and effortless. She is Blessed with that natural sound - she's not imitating or trying to be something she's not. She's authentic and genuine. Thanks for seeing that yourself. Also, thank you for noticing the effort to create all of those backing tracks. We do it purely for the love of the music. So glad you enjoyed it, and again, thank you so much for your kind words! -Jimmy
Hi Jimmy. Thanks so much for the response! I absolutely LOVED Tori's version. There were definitely two sides to that...Tori and then you. Watching the video and seeing how much was involved in making this sound as well as it did was just incredible to see. So much respect your way. I've re-watched this video numerous time already. What you managed to pull of here was nothing short of amazing. Then to take your skills and throw in Tori's vocals, just wow! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to pull that all together. Like I said in the video, there was definitely a core memory unlocked when listening to it. Needless to say, I've already subscribed to your channel. Great job and hope to see more great things coming from your direction.
Harriet and Chloe were good. They were also of an age. Tori is 20 years old. And what I heard was spot on for Karen vibes with Tori. My vote is for the kid.
I love your expression when Tori sung the first line. You closed your eyes and smiled, as if transported back in time and hearing Karen singing it. Tori has that effect on people.
Tori Holub hands down. No contest. Check out her new arrangement of Georgia On My Mind. Amazing! Also an original Something To Believe In. In fact check out everything she has done. You will not be sorry you did. Always enjoy your reactions and comments. Thanks!
I discovered Tori Holub a few weeks ago here on RU-vid. And I'm blown away too. She gives me goose bumps and brought me to tears with some songs. Such a beautiful voice and modest person. Bravo 👏👏👏
In an interview, Tori said she studied Karen's inflection! Tori voice is natural and not forced! Tori did say she doesn't mind being compared to Karen. Tori voice is limited on what she can sing.. she does have a original song out! It sounds like the brother wrote the song!
Correction. Richard Carpenter DID NOT ask Tori to sing for the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration at the Downey United Methodist Church. Not sure where you got that information, but it is false. The Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration chose several Carpenters tributes to perform at the Downey United Methodist Church for a special acoustic concert on April 25. We were one of those acts - "Carpenters Legacy". We also performed our full show at the Downey Theatre the night before. Earlier that week, we had a special private meeting with Richard at his Yesterday Once More car collection warehouse which lasted over two hours. Videos from the meeting are on our RU-vid channel… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o0VIDrhyI2Y.htmlsi=4E-4GQW0rTizOg9V
@@SallyOlsonCarpentersLegacy ha ha oh you didnt like that did you Sally? Had to get in there ? Ya very quick off the mark. I was also asked to perform and billed to perform, but due to personal reasons I was unable to perform too, was so gutted. All these singers are amazing that you mention, all very unique in their own way. We all love performing their music. Great reviews xx
Dude, I could see it in your eyes, you were 13 again when Tori started singing. Did the same for me. What a gift she has given everyone, especially those of us who first heard Karen in the 1970s. I’m 67 and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Wow.❤
I discovered Tori Holub a few weeks ago here on RU-vid. And I'm blown away too. She gives me goose bumps and brought me to tears with some songs. Such a beautiful voice and modest person. Bravo 👏👏👏
I am totally blown away by Tori's voice. I closed my eye's when each song started so I could only hear the song and when I heard Tori, I thought I was listening to Karen! Tori is hands down the best when it comes to recreating the Carpenter sound. Her voice is the best Karen Carpenter rendition out of the 3.
Enjoyed all three artists. Great video. Just a note on Tori: Before her collab with Jim, she put together myriad videos of herself singing on multiple tracks. She has quite an ear and is very conversant with multitrack decks and sequencing software.
Hi Bob, I laughed when Tori started singing. I thought for a moment your jaw was about to hit the floor, ha, ha. It happened to me the first timeI heard her sing a Carpenter's song. There is a video on RU-vid that overlays Tori's vocal over a Carpenter's old video, where it switches her vocal back and forth with Karen's---it's really eerie. If this cover here doesn't convince of the uncanny similarity in their voices, then the latter I'm pretty sure will.
Can't help but get emotional listening to these voices and remembering Karen Carpenter. It's so sad she left us way too young. Beautiful talent lost to the world. Tori Holub blows me away too !!
Listening to these takes on Karen's songs, just really brings you back there, doesn't it? That's one of the things I love about covers...especially ones from "way back when". Thanks for the listen.
Excellent job offering three extremely talented renditions. My understanding is that Tori is only 20 or 21 yrs. old. So wonderful that she is willing to share her gift and appreciation for the Carpenters with her generational peers. Thanks to Ron for the request.
I believe she's exactly 20. I know she was for that video with Jim. She's so awesome. I just wish she would do full songs on her RU-vid channel. I've only been following her for a couple months but I'm ready for more and it doesn't have to be Carpenters covers.
I gotta tell ya, I heard this piece with torri and it made me cry. 50 some years ago my wife and I saw a Carpenters concert in Chicago. What a pleasure to here this beautiful young lady sing.
Tori, is by far the best!! I've seen some of her other Carpenteresque videos. I (67) grew up listening to Karen and Richard, always my fave. Tori is so spot on, I couldn't believe it when I heard her. I would also LOVE to see Tori expand that repertoire in her own style. Her voice is just amazing!
Several people have already suggested listening to Ksenia Buzina from Leonid and Friends, doing Superstar. I’ll put it this way, her rendition of Superstar was so impressive, that Richard Carpenter invited her to his home for dinner with he and his wife. That’s the respect she got from Karen Carpenter’s brother. Leonid and Friends are currently on tour in the eastern part of the US.
I avoided Tori for the longest time because I love Karen so much. When I finally listened to her ...wow. This girl could sing all the songs we never had from Karen. She is a talent all of her own though and I am a fan.
Harriet has a beautiful voice but higher register. Chloe has that fantastic lower voice with depth like Karen's and I love her voice! But... Tori blew me away!!!!! If Tori plays the drums I'm going to go crazy! I noticed your smile and facial expressions when you heard Tori.
Oh my, did Harriet do an excellent rendition! So Beautiful! Tori (and company) sounded spot on! What a talent! Chloe is also very talented, but she needs to learn to smile and look like she's enjoying what she's doing. Thanks Bob!
Thanks for checking these out. I was wondering what your thoughts would be on these. Glad you enjoyed them. Too funny that you saw the same thing I did with Chloe. Beautiful singer, just needs to show a little emotion. ;) Good to hear from you.
@@ModernLifeForThe70sMind By the way, I loved that you did three songs at once. I don't mind that it makes the video a little longer. If you do three songs from one artist, or group by song style, or whatever; you could get through more of your request list longer. Just an idea. 💡
It's a shame this was an old video of me that was used. I would have preferred one of my newer ones were used as I have worked on the act since then. @@ModernLifeForThe70sMind
Harriet is enjoyable to watch when she's recording in the studio. Her facial expressions remind me of Karen's videos, IMO. I missed that here, but, WOW, these three were all wonderful in their own ways. Just joyful to hear karen-esque music!
If Karen was still alive today, she would be 74-years-old. If Karen met Tori Holub, she might be excited that her music would live on with this incredibly talented young woman.
I’m British. I’ve seen Harriet twice in concert. She’s a lovely lady with an uncanny, vocal resemblance to Karen. In her shows, for many years, she deliberately didn’t cover any Carpenters songs - instead she sang some of her own material and covers of others. Her’s is a great interpretation. I wish Richard would hook up with her when he tours the UK for a week in September 2024. 🤞🏻 It might happen. Chloe has a beautiful voice. Tori Holub is very, very good. In fact, it pains me to say it (being a Brit and routing for Harriet) but Tori has it locked.
@@TFG0045 find Tori’s short cover #2 of Goodbye To Love and say that again. Not even close, Harriet slowed it down to breathe. Tori sang it through on one breath. That’s the special difference. Karen did it, Tori did it.
Hands down, Tori Holub is the best! You should hear other Carpenters songs she has recorded. She also has other covers of other groups as well. I see her in RU-vid!
These were really beautiful. I, like others, prefer Tori because of course I do! Harriet had a beautiful cover that was more her than Karen, but it was beautiful and gutsy because it invites comparison to the original. It has a different atmosphere, and I respect her effort to go for a slightly different mood. Obviously Tori is truly amazing, and she being so young has a bright future ahead of her. I love not just her performance, which takes me on a journey every time I listen, but also her love for the Carpenters music that is so evident and palpable. The last one, Chloe, has a lovely voice and definitely reminds one of the great Karen herself. It's interesting that some have commented on how she didn't look like she was enjoying herself. If you look at some of Karen's older foorage, you might say the same of her facial expressions. Of course, the difference is that Karen was ... well, Karen. There will probably never be another, but Tori has the best shot at it if anyone does.
Tori actually has two originals, her latest is out now, Something to Believe in, however, because it's her natural voice, (not fake), she still sounds like Karen. She's becoming quite famous on social music, feel free to listen to more of her music, you will swear Karen has returned.
Tori Holub has an amazing voice and is nearly identical to Karen's voice as far as tone and pitch accuracy. It's amazing that she is only 20. Let's just say her talent was a gift just like Karen's was. I was surprized you didn't include Ksenia Buzina, a Russian woman that tours with Leonid & Friends. Her voice is just like Tori's yet is more experienced. If any of you haven't seen the videos of Leonid & Friends, please do so. You will not be disappointed.
As stated with-in n typed right Above : at 13:46 James Wilus ? Wilcus ? /Jim / Jimmy = @jimmididr Bob's our Thoughtful n sharing YT Host here. Wonderful ~ jus Wonderful to have happened onto this Musical Magic LATE Last night, and Lasting into 2 - 3:am = Thursday April 25 2024.
As already mentioned, James Wilkes -@jimmididr was the producer and did many of the instruments. However, if you check out Tori’s own channels, she is a more than competent editor/producer herself in addition to her beautiful voice.
I must admit I am biased and such a big fan of Tori Holub. The other two are very good, but Tori did the best cover. Thanks for your honest review. Tori for the Win!
Heard Tori sing this loads of times and still get goosebumps. Shes incredible and absolutely spot on for Karen Carpenter reincarnated. Her tone, her pitch, the bottom bass of her voice is exactly the same, the way she holds the notes, its Karen all over again. Plus all the backing in this video is Tori layering her voice over it. Brilliant Tori
All 3some were great indeed. But i think Tori is for me a 'slight-pinch' the closest it can get to Karen.Btw i love that Olivia's photo cover behind you.
Oh and Tori does some wicked covers of ON-J songs. Her vocal range skews high so check out Have You Never Been Mellow for some more shock and awe. Sadly, no full length ON-J , yet.
@@jbs256 Unfortunately Karen and ONJ never did a duet in their heyday so to see how Karen's magical contralto voice could blend with Olivia's etherial soprano beautiful colours. Both unique.
Thank you so much for the video! I've been following Tori since last year, but glad I found 2 more Karen C. Here in the Philippines Carpenters songs are eternally being played any day in radios and Karaoke. BTW, Tori Holub has an additional gift, and that is she's somewhat a sound engineer. I'd seen her video doing all the vocals on different levels and she uses equipment to do that teaching the viewers how The Carpenters have done such choir-like sounds. 💝 Plus she can play piano, guitar, and drums too. 👏 We are so blessed to have Tori in our midst today! 🙏🏽
The 3 ladies are a great joy to listen to. Their voice convinces me that I am listening to Karen Carpenter's "understudies"... I hope they sing and record all the songs they can sing to and release it in CD (if permitted). It's great ❤music 🎶.
Until now only one artist filled my eyes with tears while listening, that was and still is Olivia Newton John. Yes and now Tori Holub..she’s absolutely amazing.
Bob, that was a surprise to have three different artists covering the Carpenters. I told you you would love Tori. I am actually familiar with all three of them and each brings a little something different to the table. But for me, Tori brings everything. It doesn't sound like she is covering another artist. It is her voice naturally and it is stunning. And yes you are right, the production that Jim provides here is stellar. Tori actually sang all of her own harmonies and Jim put it all together. Notice also that there is no autotune or pitch correction. Tori does cover a few other artists currently and also has an original song. What confirms what I just said earlier is that you still hear some of the Karen Carpenter tone in her other songs, demonstrating how natural that is for her. Here is a link to her original song that has very much a carpenter's vibe in terms of style. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bQURbjijAbI.htmlsi=c99nsiDgzUWIdYLt And one thing not mentioned is that relative to the other singers today who are much older, she is only 20 years old. Thanks Bob for this very interesting presentation and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Peace out. By the way, you will see that Jim Wilkas himself actually responded below in the comments!
Ron, I thank you for recommending Tori to Bob. As a curious twist of fate, I have now discovered Modern Life for the 70s Mind by following Tori links. Bob’s immediate reactions (facial and verbal) were identical to mine and I’m sure many thousands of others (can’t say millions yet, but it won’t be long). Even when I sent a link to my 28 year old daughter her response was simply OMG! You are absolutely right that each of the artists had very strong plus points, but Tori has no negative elements. She just seems to produce this naturally and effortlessly.
Only my opinion-and please read all the way through before commenting. Harriet-she’s phenomenal. In other Karen covers her bass is silky smooth and her tone is spot on. For me, it’s the lack of layering and harmonies that is missing. She’s more “Karen” than “Carpenters”. Tori-ok, I think hands down this cover takes it. The ONLY thing I could be picky about is I think Karen carpenter sings with a smile in her voice (similar to Ella Fitzgerald) and there could be just a little more smile. But that’s REALLY picky. I was crying listening to her…and the backup spot on too. I really felt like I was listening to the Carpenters. Chloe-I liked her…I think she’s talented and I liked the layers. I think she might have made it more her own than the others. For me though, as talented as she is, I wanted to hear the original. Oh, and I wasn’t crazy about the chorus-it was too fast for me. All in all….great commentary and really enjoyed listening to Karen again. I’m 61 and grew up on the Carpenters, so the memories just flooded me in the best way. 💜
well, i think we all can be very happy, that we waited 999999 times for the one in a million voice having again. tori holub is incredible good and close to karen.
My 1st ever concert was "The Carpenters" in the SF Bay Area 1970! Thanks for the follow-up information. I had requested Tori here and was going to use some of those for follow-up requests but that's okay. Hopefully he reacts to them.
@@ronraskind She is absolutely sensational. Read that she is an aspiring sound engineer; someone stated about Karen -"a drummer who can sing!" Well, perhaps not too far down the road someone will say of Tori "a sound engineer who can really sing!".
@@rlew49ers@rlew49ers Yes she is a very special artist. And she is gradually getting known on social media. She will be performing at the Carpenter's tribute in Southern California the end of this month. She also has sent an audition tape to Richard Carpenter and I don't know where that is going but it's exciting. I think she does dabble just a bit with the drums but her main instruments are guitar and piano. She is an aspiring sound engineer and in several performances online, does her own layering of her harmonies. I think she is learning from Jim wilkas. I don't get the impression that she will be a drummer professionally🤔
@@ronraskind Yes, I did hear about Tori performing at the tribute. When I'm watching reactions to other artist (Lucy Thomas, Lara Fabian, Gigi De Lana and Morissette Amon) and if Tori isn't on a specific reactors line-up; I have been suggesting they check out Tori). I believe Tori hasn't been on YT that long maybe 3-4 years? - Ron from Northern California
Hi, another Ron I believe! Cool! More than welcome to Tori’s Troops! I’m Joe if you’ve heard reactors shouting out me, I’ve been on the mission since November after being algorithm’d Tori in October. What a journey. As an OG Carpenters fan she was the breath of sunshine I always hoped for. Ron is my friend and has joined the team as it were. Thank you for requesting also! I’m starting to see a few independent of us requests or self starters just shouting out about Tori. I will be seeing her at Downey, can’t wait. Joe
Yo soy admirador de la mejor voz femenina del mundo de todos los tiempos Karen Carpenters y esta muchacha Tori le llega mucho felicitaciones por esa gran voz tan parecida a mi ídolo le doy un 95% de similitud 👏
I am a long time Carpenters fan from the early 70's ever since I first heard Karen sing Close To You. I have NEVER heard anyone that sounded exactly like Karen....she was too much her own special vocal sound. However, with that being said, I have heard many over the years, tribute artists and covers and they are all good in their own way. But when I heard Harriet, I literally got goose bumps. She never wanted to be a Karen copycat, but so many people wanted her to do Carpenter covers, she finally started doing more of them. She also does original songs. Her facial features seem to contribute to her sounding like Karen in so many ways. She doesn't TRY to, she just does. I don't think this song really conveys her voice as well as it should. Her Tik Tok covers are wonderful and I am a NEW fan of hers. Not saying others aren't good, but they just don't "do" anything for me. Nice comparisons.
Tori doesn’t sound as much like Karen Carpenter as Harriet does. In a way, Tori’s voice is too good to sound like Karen Carpenter. Harriet knows just where to put just the right amount of vocal fry like Karen did. I don’t think that Tori tries to do this, or not as much as Harriet does. Tori has a beautiful vibrato that she uses instead. That’s where Tori shines.
I’ve been listening to Tori Holub for few months now, and I enjoy listening to everything of hers. I was 14 when the Carpenters burst into our world, I loved the 70s with the Carpenters in it, shattered by our loss of Karen in 1983. When I first heard Tori singing a Carpenters song, I was in shock, and I still get chills. I want to cry to hear that Karen sound again, it miraculous. Find her Olivia Newton-John songs, wow! Tori is so talented she can do anything, and so young, she has a huge world ahead of her. That said, all three singers here were wonderful, I enjoyed them all, thank you for doing this for us!
This was actually more fun that I thought it would be. Karen had some mighty shoes to fill and it's nice that there are singers out there who are fighting to keep her music alive.
Tori is channeling Karen. It's almost beyond just the vocals. Which, admittedly, probably makes no sense. But there's an honesty to her singing you just can't fake. I've never heard anything like it - since Karen!
This blows me away every time I hear carpenters related music. Tori is a phenomenon. You react to the song like I do. Have looked at reaction videos often and always look to see how it affects the RU-vid creator. Liked your video ! Congrats!
Harriet was great; she captured that little bit of vocal fry that Karen had now and then, as well as the silky smooth delivery. *** Tori made me tear up. I had already seen this but it still gut punched me in a great way. Fantastic. Love the Leonid and Friends type of multiple frames of production. How can you be better than great? I'd love to hear her do Superstar. *** Poor Chloe had to follow Tori but she was wonderful too. Beautiful alto voices for all three of them.
Tori has done Superstar twice. Once as a Short video on her channel. The other is a full audio on Lauren Ravas’ topic channel. It was done in 2022 and has a different arrangement than Richard’s. The audio one is on iTunes and the big streamers. Tori has 7 songs in total up there in the cloud.
I have listened to so many Carpenters songs, sung by Karen and by many other Trubute Artists. Some are very good, but don't quite catch Karen's pitch, tone, etc. as it is difficult to sound exactly like someone else. There are some very professional Tribute Shows being done where the Show is Great, The Costumes are Excellent, and you can compliment them all for doing a wonderful job. I could single out a few who sound close to Karen and look a lot like Karen, BUT I'm not going to mention everyone that is very good. I am simply going to say that TORI HOLUB absolutely nailed it! Nobody sounds as close to Karen Carpenter as Tori Holub, period. Again, my opinion. Prove me wrong. I don't think you can. When it comes to Impersonating Karen Carpenter, there are the others whom are very very good, and then there's TORI HOLUB with whom there is no comparison IMO.
Three wonderful tribute performances right here. Harriet right at home with her take on "Goodbye to Love", with that sensitive end section you noted Bob. Harriet actually sings this song in a key a semitone LOWER than Karen. The Carpenters performed this in B flat major, Harriet sings it in A major. [Woodwinds love the flats!] It has all been said about Tori Holub. I was also lost for words, but so much X factor in this performance. I loved it when we saw multiple Toris in the video when she was double tracking and more! Listening to her speak, you can tell that what we are hearing is natural range for her. Finally Chloe Foston was right up there. I would have liked to hear one of her slow ballads rather than "Only Yesterday", from the toe-tapping sing along repertoire. On the slow ballads she is most convincing. Slightly different pronunciations are fine by me, especially for someone born in Scotland. Note also that Chloe is a SOPRANO opera singer, who also has this low range she can use with her Carpenters tribute work. She is singer with the technical foundation to emulate other singers if she wishes. It seems like tribute acts are coming of age when it comes from the Carpenters, with modern technology very much there to help. My wish is that we would see a renaissance of Soft Rock, the mainly 70s era was over all too soon last time.
Tori is fantastic ! The best. Wow. I can’t stop listening to her. Geesh. How can someone sound so much like her ?? Omg. Do you know if Richard has heard her? It would blow his mind. I have to say Chloe was really excellent too. She didn’t have the backup that Tori had so I would like to hear her with Jim Wilkas.
I have heard all three before and I think they are very nice but Tori !! Tori is amazing! I was raised on The Carpenters and all the 70s music. I feel like an expert by now.
I loved your reaction to tori holub, it was the same as mine. She just blew me away. Harriet & chloe are new to me on this video & wow, i've found another 2 incredible voices to investigate. Magical stuff, thanks for the video dude. P.S: If you are interested the youtube channel 'wings of pegasus' does a great side by side of tori & karen with the graphical analysis of their pitch which is how i found out about her & it shows just how close she is to karen's perfect pitch & tone. Thanks again.
Hi Bob! I’m Joe a friend of Ron’s. I loved what you did here. I’ve heard most of the other Karen cover people. All are decent singers some are closer none are the entire package as Simon would say about Tori, IMHO. I’d use the word effortless and also natural. It’s her voice. She will add some “Karenisms” if you will to fill the sound. But it’s still Tori underneath it all. She learned to sing, play piano and guitar by ear. Some lessons on the guitar. Drums are in the works but not a strength by her own admission. But she’s shocked us before. We knew she could strum a guitar and sing a gentle song. Then she drops Crazy On You and is 4 members of ❤, including BOTH sisters. Sadly like so many of her videos it’s a short, though on Instagram it’s long enough to make you want more. She’s also a Carpenters super-fan. At 20! She used to have two videos on RU-vid of her massive Carpenters memorabilia collection. She sadly took them down, I hope she puts the newer one back up. In an interview she recently admitted that Richard knows what she’s doing and likes it. There’s more but she was coy and dodged any more info. I see you’ve been asked for more Tori and I encourage that! We can never have enough. I didn’t see her cover of Georgia On My Mind requested, which was produced by Chris May. Chris co-wrote Carpenters: The Musical Legacy. It’s a must have book BTW. I saw Olivia on your wall, Karen? BTW Tori has 5 short covers of ON-J songs. These show her upper range, Tori follows Livvy way the hell up there on Never Been Mellow! One last “comparison” Harriet slowed Goodbye To Love way down, that’s cheating! That song was a challenge to Karen. She had to sing 26 syllables with chromatics on one breath! Tori on her 2nd attempt of the cover did it! I’ll link that short below so you can see more talent! Her library is a rabbit hole of a sort. She has a few totally original songs too. She also does wicked covers of Joni, including her newest, Coyote on Instagram. Enjoy the ride! Joe ru-vid.comlzGAhBT-zTg?si=DcKfpSwtayl0amrr
Loved all three, each had their own voice of The Carpenters. Harriet was more solo, but that was the song. Tori and her "group" knocked it out of the park. Chloe was great and sang like an angel.
Chloe sounds more like Olivia Newton John. Her vocals a brighter and not as warm. Same with Harriet. Tori has the same warmth, pitch and sound that reminds me of Karen. I listened to the carpenters all the time as a youth. I have an original 45 of “it only just begun.” But that was fun comparing! Great video.
Tori. Simply because she's a very talented singer that it's so happened that she's a sound engr too, so that's why. She's quite so amazingly great. But it would be much more interesting if you have included Ms. Shane Ericks too in this commentary video. Thanks for having this shared. Very interesting. Good job. Keep it up. God bless.
