My favorite Carpenter's song! My wife of 43 years passed away on June 10. Tomorrow is our anniversary. I'm getting up at daybreak to place flowers and pictures on her grave. This made me cry tonight.

Sometimes less than one. Work leads (sung to familiarize the band with the melody of the song) are not intended for the final track...but several work leads by Karen ended up on Carpenters albums, including what was her very first singing of Superstar (for which she was sightreading off a handwritten lyric sheet). That one ended up not only on the album, it became a hit single. KC was magic.

Watching you listen to her gives me a new appreciation of her talent. I was in high school when they were on the charts. Back in those days we were all getting into Led Zep, Clapton, The Who, Creedence Clearwater, Cat Stevens etc. So many great edgy acts at the time. The Carpenters seemed so middle-of-the-road. When I listen now I realize that I really sold them short. She was awesome! (I think I did the same thing to Bread. Now I realize how great David Gates is.) Better late than never I guess.

She was on a variety show with her brother and I'm struggling to remember the name of it, but its features her doing various drum solo by running from Station to Station on I believe as many as six different drum kits. Some just had toms, some were complete kits, some were blocks and bongos. She's running her ass off from place to place, even once when the chair wasn't there she just stood there and played. Awesome. I will see if I can find the link. In the meantime try a couple of different searches for drum solos

I still remember my reaction to hearing this song the first time in 1973 at eight years old. Such a long time ago but the song is still fresh and the song's message proves that history repeats itself. I miss Karen Carpenter very much.

She was always a drummer first in her mind, never the singer. It was her brother who was the singer/songwriter but when the producers heard Karen's voice they demanded she be the vocalist. She eventually got used to it but she never liked it. I always wondered if this stress within herself in part led to her eating disorder. If she had her way she would have only been the drummer, and never sought the limelight. Rest in Peace Karen. You're pain gave your vocals extra depth and poignancy. It touched a chord in so many people.

Thanks!! You totally "GET" the thing about Karen's voice. It's so incredibly beautiful and timeless. Thanks for giving their music a platform for others to discover! Karen would be so moved that you enjoyed it so much. You should listen to her last recorded song, "Now". She did it in just ONE take.... It's amazing.....

Thank you for keeping Karen alive. Pure silk, smoothness, and beauty. Yes, her first love was playing drums, she was pushed into singing.

Karen had such a stunning voice. Heaven. Listened to the Carpenters when I was a little girl. My mum would play their vinyl records in the 70'/80's.

Karen Carpenter is in a class all her own. Seriously, there is no one like her... never was and never will be. Let's rejoice that we had her for 32 years and the memories will last. I am elated to see younger generations appreciate Karen as we all do. And I am so glad to have grown up with Karen and Richard and have lived their music first-hand.

It really warms my heart to listen to people discover the carpenters. I remember when I first began listening as a teenager in the late 80s… I Felt the same way… How can anyones voice sound so beautiful? I just wanted to listen all day.
