Karen and I corresponded with each other while I was in Vietnam, it started with a case of beer bet that she wouldn't answer my letter. I was 17 years old and had a huge crush, I still have those letters in a safety deposit box. I tear up listening to her because there was a lot of private sharing of what we were going through. She was so genuine, sweet, and kind,

Richard had such a great ability to either write the songs or pick the best ones and make them smash hits. It was always super direct lyrics, w/out a bunch of cryptic poetic obscurity. Just how people think and Karen would deliver it w/ that emotional impact and the voice of one of God's personal angels (which she is now).

It doesn't matter when you came on over. You just realized in your soul what majestic singing and pure tone sounds like. I was taunted and brutalized by my friends in the early 70s for daring to worship (little "w") at the altar of Karen's voice. Rock was their only god (little "g"), by that I mean hard rock. Now don't get me wrong, I love me some rock n roll but Karen's voice brings me closer to God and heaven, such is the impact of hearing an angel sing. Praise God.

Can you imagine being the cynical record producer, who has heard it all before. The good, the bad, and the ugly. That guy, I presume it was a guy, slouching in his chair, almost groaning at having to listen to another wannabe group. And then, this angel sings, and he sits bolt upright in his chair knowing he had found a multimillion dollar voice. I wish I would have been there. It must have been an incredible moment.

Richard knew how to showcase her talent. The two fed each other. When she died a light went out in him. You can see some biographies with him and the pain is still there. He said in one we were just starting. Many of these songs have been done by others but Richards gift of re arranging and re writing them was one of a kind. They took a back commercial and made it a hit, known as we’ve only just begun co-written by Paul Williams.

This one is a Carpenter/Bettis composition. In the early seventies there was a vogue for "oldies", songs from the jukebox era, and this lyric by John Bettis was a commentary on that. It's funny how the "shingalingaling" songs were oldies after only about ten years, but this one is timeless after nearly fifty...

Music is a Time Machine. When you hear a certain song from your past, it takes you back, and all of those great memories come rushing back to you. It's wonderful. When my mom was dying from Alzheimer's, I used to play the songs she grew up listening to, and although she hadn't really communicated with us for a while, when she heard those old songs, it brought a little smile to her face for a moment. The tears started rolling down my face with joy at seeing her recognize those songs from the 1940s "Swing" era. It was a gift rom God. She died a few days later after suffering for over 8 years. I'm her son and caregiver. I miss mom so much. God Bless

That was a beautiful reaction. Karen’s voice and Richard’s orchestration ties many of us to a time and place and what we were doing. Listen to Karen’s vibrato when she sings “still shines” in this song. It is perfect. Richard says she could wake at 3 a.m. and sound like that with no rehearsal. Her vocal skill was a gift for the whole world, and her innocent clarity and ease of skill is the reason she is still so loved.

Harri, this song did to you exactly what it is about. Here, check out the lyrics: When I was young I'd listen to the radio Waitin' for my favorite songs When they played I'd sing along It made me smile. Those were such happy times And not so long ago How I wondered where they'd gone But they're back again Just like a long lost friend All the songs I loved so well. Every Sha-la-la-la Every Wo-o-wo-o Still shines Every shing-a-ling-a-ling That they're startin' to sing's So fine. When they get to the part Where he's breakin' her heart It can really make me cry Just like before It's yesterday once more. Lookin' back on how it was In years gone by And the good times that I had Makes today seem rather sad So much has changed. It was songs of love that I would sing to then And I'd memorize each word Those old melodies Still sound so good to me As they melt the years away. Every Sha-la-la-la Every Wo-o-wo-o Still shines Every shing-a-ling-a-ling That they're startin' to sing's So fine. All my best memories Come back clearly to me Some can even make me cry. Just like before It's yesterday once more ------------------------------------------------------------------

Technically there was a sort of 50's early 60's nostalgia movement going on at the time in the wake of the movie American Graffiti and other things, even though new songs and artists were prominent as usual....this song was probably Richard Carpenter's anticipation of that feeling at the time. The TV show Happy Days was filmed in late 1973 and presented the next Jan 1974. Your emotional baggage here is what makes this a great reaction, rather than just a technician's review. You have just proven how powerful music is beyond the fancy over the top guitar solos crap and Diva operatic performance singers etc. Congratulations on your personal discovery. There seems to be 2 kinds of listeners...the one who wants to be dazzled by fast notes, funky beats, and loud volumes and screaming, and the ones who want emotions, soul searching, stories being told, and evocation of memories almost forgotten. While some were getting highs on the Led Zeppelin mentality stuff, I was researching Chuck Berry, mad the Beatles broke up, fascinated James Taylor, Jim Croce, the Carpenters, Carol King, Carly Simon, Gordon Lightfoot, and jazz. Every old song I know has a memory.

I was a kid in the 70s (graduated high school in 1980). I had The Carpenters albums on my record shelf next to Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Rush, Bachman Turner Overdrive, etc. Karen softened the 1970s like nobody else could do. I cried when I first heard she died. My eyes still get misty to this day. She was beautiful, talented, and had a wonderful spirit. Nobody signs like that otherwise. I still miss her and I never met her. Secretly, most rockers were Karen Carpenter fans ;) These feelings take nothing away from her brother Richard. He is an incredible talent too. Still, I responded to Karen on their albums as though she was singing to me.

I have been a Carpenters fan since the late 60s early 70s when I was in 6th or 7th grade.

Incredible how you experienced exactly what the song was talking about- being reminded of wonderful past memories.
