At the end August of 2000, the members of The Cars assembled at Turner Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, for an interview. It was their first public reunion in over 10 years, and sadly, it was to be their last. Benjamin Orr was dying of pancreatic cancer, and it was his wish to get everyone together. His fiancee, Julie Snider, and his good friend, Jeff Carlisi, worked with Rhino Records to sort out all of the details. The discussion was moderated by Boston journalist Brett Milano.
Immediately following the interview, Ben flew to Palmer, Alaska, where he played his last concert at the Alaska State Fair on August 25, 2000. He died less than six weeks later, on October 3, 2000.
That final interview was recorded and released as a special feature on The Cars Live DVD on October 24, 2000.
This video is likely being uploaded as a supplement for an article I wrote about The Cars. Because the purpose is to non-commercially educate and offer a critical assessment, it is being uploaded under the terms of Fair Use. No copyright infringement intended.

So sad to see Benjamin so frail in this interview. It still baffles me that so many people have no idea that he sang so many of the hits. The Cars were one of my first favorite bands growing up. The first album still holds it's own against the greatest albums of all time.

I read that Ben was the impetus behind this interview because he wanted to get together with his bandmates, whom he loved, one last time knowing his time was growing short. It breaks my heart to watch this, but his courage and love shine through. Ben is an inspiration on so many levels.

This band was such a fundamental part of my youth. I was a Cars fanatic. In 9th grade (1983) there was a girl in my school who was also a Cars fanatic. We used to write Cars lyrics on paper and pass them to each other throughout the school day. I still listen to The Cars to this day. I have all their records on vinyl. Every time I listen to them I can’t help but to think of her. Deepest gratitude to The Cars for bringing me so much joy with their music. R.I.P. Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek. 🙏
@davidoverstreet2875
@davidoverstreet2875 Год назад
I can relate. When I was 14, in 1980, we would hear My Best Friend's Girl and another song from The Cars first album on the radio, and I thought it was cool. But I didn't really become a Cars fanatic until I started smoking weed and swiped my older cousin's, who lived with me, new Candy-O album. It was an 8-track cassette, and my dad had just purchased a used car for me, a 1969 VW bug, that I was still too young to drive, so every morning before school for 2 months straight, I would sit in my car and crank up the Candy O album and smoke out on Gainesville Green Marijuana in a miniature corn cob pipe. This was in Florida. To say that it was a transcendental spiritual experience would not be an understatement. I will always remember, and cherish those glorious mornings. I was hooked. And then, as if that wasn't good enough, the Shake It Up album came out, and I seriously thought I had died and gone to heaven. I would lay on my bed in my room for hours and just listen to the eight track play over and over again. Pure bliss. High as a kite and loving life as a teenager. In the early '80s. And, of course, I have had other favorite bands as the years have gone on, but no 'favorite band' ever affected me in a positive way with their music like the Cars did. Pure Musical magic!!

The Cars are one of a couple acts that I really just think I took for granted. Their music always felt eternal, like it had no beginning and no end. They were always there. I always loved their songs. Just recently I saw some videos for the first time and in so doing I learned about Benjamin Orr. I always thought Ric O. was the only singer. To see Ben singing so artfully and skillfully while playing bass blew me away. I fell in love with him. I’m a singer songwriter who plays rhythm guitar. I always admire bassists who also sing since it seems so counter-intuitive to me with voice holding down its melodic and punctuated rhythmic structure and bass holding down the entire house. It’s odd feeling such an affinity towards someone in videos. Chalk it up to the power of music. Pancreatic cancer took my oldest sister and my best cousin. I’m crying and saddened that I never knew Ben existed until this week and so long after his passing. As for the rest of the band, what a beautiful group of men without the macho displays of so many bands. They all seem so humble. Thank you all for your music.

For a man who lived the dream life of a huge rock star, blessed with above average looks & adored by countless beautiful women, it speaks volumes of Bens character & humility that he went on public T.V. & allowed the world to see what the ravages of cancer had done. Arranging this reunion was a classy last act. It's heartbreaking to see this once handsome man reduced to this; I couldn't help notice he looks like a cool Grandpa hanging out in the garage with his grandson's rock band. I've heard that pancreatic is one of the most painful & brutally swift cancers there is. The bravery he shows through the obvious pain he's feeling to be there; to be reunited with the friends who shared & lived their life's dream together . . . I can't continue. . .

You know, in 59 years I'm beginning to see that there exists a love affair between truly gifted artists & their instrument of choice. Like, u feel lost & out of sorts sometimes when there's not one around to play. How you cannot see a guitar, ANY guitar, even missing strings and such, & not feel this overpowering urge to pick it up & play it, see what sounds you can make out of it. Ben played live right up until the very end (he left this video taping to catch a flight to Seattle to play a outdoor show, amazing dedication!); such was Bens love for the instrument(s) . . .

This is the second time I have watched the full video, and have had the same or similar response each time, i.e it is almost too painful, so full of emotion and impossible to speak a word even if I had wanted to, but I loved it. Above all for Ben, the beautiful, brilliant, self-effacing superstar, showing incredible courage, humility and affection for his brother Cars. And for those same wonderful, talented men, enfolding him as it were, talking warm-heartedly of their great times together. From Patricia H. not William H.

This band was so incredibly compelling to me by 1980. They redefined music in that they took synthesizers and excellent guitar work to new directions without any of the trappings of mid-70’s rock. They brought a new style into focus and no one could touch them in terms of really ballsy but classy music. This interview really gets in to the mystery they exuded. Ben was such an amazing singer, Elliot the best lead guitarist, and they had a definite sound that was no one else. The fact that they were influenced by VU and Soft Machine is interesting, because they definitely brought that legacy forward. Now that Ben and Ric are gone this interview is so fascinating.

Strange watching this in 2022 knowing that Ric and Ben are gone. The Cars were one of my first band obsessions growing up. Such great memories, especially Candy-O. That was always my favorite. Flawless album.

My first really favorite band on a fanatical level after I heard the candy o album. At the same time I just started smoking out on Gainesville green at the age of 14 in 1980. Euphoric days. And then the Shake It Up album came out and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Mind blowing good shit.

Ah yes, the Candy-O album, back when album covers were a big thing. That image of that buxom babe lounging on the hood of that car in a black see thru body stocking & wait . . oh my God, can i actually see the beginning of her vagina?!?! (Literally my 1st experience of what is now popularly known as 'cameltoe', lol!). As a young boy going thru puberty at the time that cover was a memory I will take to my grave. RIP Ric & Big Ben, 2 of the coolest signature rock guys from one of the coolest bands ever....

@davidoverstreet2875 Год назад
@@pauliescott that's right. I forgot Panorama. There were only two good songs on that album. I added it to one of my other Cars albums. I meant the first album, Candy-O, and Shake It Up were their best albums. Heartbeat city was good, but not awesome. In fact, I added the two Panorama songs to the end of Heartbeat City. (C.D.'s). So you were correct. But the self titled debut album, Candy-O, and Shake It Up are phenomenal works of musical brilliance. Every one of those musicians were geniuses. You can tell they were all extremely intelligent. And you can tell they really respected each other and got along well together also. I'm pretty sure psychedelic drugs aided into creativity as well. LOL

Thanks to my music hound best friend since 5th Grade all the way through (and past) H.S., I was fortunate to be on the ground floor with the Cars in our Senior year, 1978, when their debut album was simmering in the background, before it ignited. Jerome was always first on the scene with new bands, the latest musical sounds and trends across the board: rock, folk, country...it didn't matter for my musical explorer of a buddy. Because of him, I was playing bands from the likes of The Cars and Dire Straights for other friends before they had ever heard of anything about them, back when it was all on 8-Tracks or LPs (cassettes were just starting to become popular).

wow! i grew up listening to them on the east coast (eastern PA) in the 80's. i always liked the Cars. Ric was always very iconic to me. omg, like, Totally from LA, right? i never realized they were from Boston - always assumed an LA band. but actually, they were each very iconic as themselves in the Cars. i think my 1st memorable exposure to them was, of course "Moving in Stereo" from ft@rh movie (phoebe cates pool scene). i was hooked - by - the - sound! ♪♫♪ 🤯i've always been really drawn to their linguistics & inflections. i find myself listening to my old FAV's from then & i can't help but be totally amazed at them as a group & individually. the more i see & hear = the more i love them! i love watching them LIVE now to see how they held it all together for a decade & thrived! and i never realized Elliot is such a hunk! 😈currently i think the best live show is the Nov 29, 1978 Musikladen tv show. please, if anyone can suggest any others? Bye Bye Love! RIP Ben & Ric

Such a bittersweet interview, loving to hear the reflective memories, but at the same time so heartbreakingly sad to see Ben sitting there without even enough energy to participate in the conversation much. So thin and frail. So heartbreaking. I didn't even know he died till after he passed. I say that, because the Cars were my favorite band in the early 80s, and it was the same time I started smoking marijuana, so it was a euphoric experience. In 2010, or 2011, I met Ben in a dream, and I believe it was a actual Spirit contact, not too long after I found out he had passed, and he was in a brown leather jacket, and smiling at me as I gushingly told him how much I loved the band and how much it impacted my life in a positive way. He had been already passed away 10 years before I found out. I also regret, after going to over 100 major rock and roll concerts over the past 40 years, not being able to see the Cars in concert. I was able to catch them during their performance for Live Aid in 1985 though, on T.V.
