I’m 66, and enjoyed this. As a graphic designer creative director, my job has been to stay. On top and predict trends. One reason I never would have considered a tattoo. I would be sick of it in a year, just as I was of my own work. I find nothing sadder than a beautiful young lady who looks like she was thrown into a dumpster full of uncapped colored markers and rolled down a rocky hill.

I have never saw a tattoo on a woman that made her more attractive than she already was. However, I have seen far too many randomly placed, stupid and nonsensical tatts that have forced me to conclude and assume that the wearer is a low IQ, low value person. To deface yourself, is to debase yourself. Just my two cents. There should be a bigger market for temporary tattoos that you can try before you buy and deciding to have them permanently etched to yourself.

I am an artist that has designed many tattoos. Personally I don't have one and don't want one. I know that my taste will change over the course of my lifetime, I will be in social situations and personal situations as I go through life where my choice of tattoo might not be the best as I grow older and mature in my thinking. I have had women who don't know what they want, only a tattoo and they change their mind from one design to the next. I find that worrisome and not far thinking. I encourage them, if they ARE going to get a tattoo it should have some meaning beyond the moment. Oh yeah....don't do it yourself while drunk. I've seen some badly misspelled and drawn tattoos.

One of my ex's was covered in tattoos. She looked goth and cool when she was in her 20's but when she hit her mid 30's and her skin was stretching a bit after having a kid the tattoos looked comical. She would wear lots of clothes to cover them up and didn't want me to mention them even though they were everywhere. Her angst and regret caused such bad self-image that she started going through a second stage of life where she wanted younger guys to be interested in her and give her validation. She finally started sleeping with the younger guys and that's when the relationship ended. Her tattoos were a massive issue to her but she self-destructed blaming everyone else.

I totally agree with everything this man is saying. I have nothing against people who have tattoos but no thanks for me. Hey to all the young folks. If you are dead set on getting a tattoo get temporary one's. That way you can wash it off before you go to that job interview or apply for the college you have been working so hard to get into. Now that I'm at an age where I've got some really great tati ideas no one's ever had before, but nowadays can't even be bothered putting it into action. the best thing you can do for yourselves is to take a really long hard look at what you're thinking of doing. I'm sure, that people judging people with tattoos is not as severe nowadays, as when I grew up. In the '60's & '70's, a tattoo meant, that you'd almost instantaneously cut your job prospects in half, & if & when you got a job, you'd never be promoted more than a notch or two up the ladder over a 40 year career, if you had a visible tattoo. ...Even people, who had tattoo, always advised kids to never get them. In those days, if a woman had a tattoo, it meant, that they had worked as a drug addicted prostitute a some point in their life. There may have been an outside chance, that they'd worked in a circus freak show, but you just didn't see woman with them. I suppose, that some woman may have had some small descrete tattoo, that only their husband or doctor knew about. A girl couldn't even get a job as a stripper in a convention city, if they had a tattoo. ...Maybe at a strip joint down by the wharf.

One night after some heavy drinking my buddies and I went to a tattoo parlor. My buddies already had tattoos so getting another was not a big deal for them. Me I was afraid of needles but this night was liquored up enough to get not one but two. The artists had me pick out what I wanted, gave me paper copies and said to put them on my bathroom mirror for a month. If I still wanted ink he was my guy... Thanks to that very smart and kind artists I do not have any tattoos. My kids heard my story but hey for them it was the 90's and they began their tattoo journey, they "feel the need for ink" and of course it shows the world how crazy and wild they are... So I think one day the "uninked" will be the outliers and will be considered the coolest of the cool and the wildest of the wild.

Your So right. The tattoo'd are no longer the unique ones it's the untattoo'd the more disciplined ones who are most rare of all. But everyone is guilty of sins just some are more plain to see. I tried to walk the narrow road but only on the outside. I have many dark secrets that my outward appearance hides. Likewise many tattoo'd individuals have the vice versa looking bad but being pure and good hearted on the inside. Many good people turn to various forms of self expression and or tormenting due to their sensitivities to the brutalities of the world. I have heard of tattoos being very therapeutic for people especially war veterans and others who have suffered intense emotional pains. God bless and let's not judge others when we know that we are no better.

When I was growing up (late '70s to early '90s), usually only males got tattoos, but even most of them didn't. Tattoos among young women were extremely rare, and if they did it at all, it was a small butterfly on the ankle and that was it. Now, oddly, I'd bet there are many more young women with tattoos than there are young men. It seems rather strange to me. Now, I tell anyone, young or old, male or female, that if you want to be unique and special, DON'T get a tattoo . . . because everyone else, is.

My God, I share the same exact advice to my daughter her senior year of high school. I told her had I been subject to the same fad in college, I’d have a “Bo Knows” tattoo this day. She graduated third in her HS class, an elite private school. She received an academic scholarship to a top 30 school. She works for a fortune 100 company and her fiancée graduates this spring from Georgetown Law School. I asked her back then if she thought the CEO of a company, partner at a law firm or even the wife of one of these people would have tattoos. I pledged to pay for any tattoo upon her graduation from Graduate School. We recently spoke about this conversation now 7 years later. She thanked me for being a good and firm father.

Always think of my Grandfather. On his death bed somehow it came up about his military tattoo from WWII, an uncle and I commented we had always thought it was Kool. To this he stated it was the stupidest thing he had ever done. When asked about that he stated that when he was a POW (27 months) he had escaped a couple of times before getting away the third time, the main way he was caught was the tattoo as it was a positive identifier of him. That is also why the police take pictures of all your tattoos when arrested. I don’t have any tattoos.

When I was growing up, my Dad always told us, that if someone had a tattoo, it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, it just meant that at some point in their life, they had a lapse & used poor judgment. Some how, Dad pointing out, that it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, was what did the trick. If he had said, that it meant, that they were a bad person, somehow, I don't know if it would have worked. ...I, nor any of my 4 brothers & 1 sister ever even thought of getting a tattoo. Maybe by saying, that it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, made us pity the person with the tattoo, rather than admiring them. Seems like others in my generation were told w similar thing. Maybe it was in "Dear Abby" in the newspaper? I don't imagine, that Dad came up with it on his own, but maybe he did?

In the UK where i lived for years, it was over half of young girls had tattoos (plural). On normally visible places. Now I am back in central (what you call eastern) Europe and Tattoo is considered something losers, criminals and drug addicts have. Not normal people. Yes, there is a tiny group of artists and soldiers as well, but those are just few individuals. It might have been considered edgy and cool in the 90's, but it fell out of fashion quickly. It is btw why Czech and Hungarian porn stars are so popular - many of them are natural, no silicone, no tattoos. I wonder if that has something to do with - And I travelled a lot through the USA and Europe and it matches perfectly - with neomarxism (SJW trend). We do have SJW's here, but it is just a tiny fraction of what exists in the west. It is rare to see a person, who ha tattoos and has right wing ideas (libertarianism, small government, low taxes), and it is hard to find a SJW without tattoos. Just a thought. I believe in freedom of choice and I couldn't care less what you do with your skin, but unless a person is a member of a tribe, unit, brotherhood (sisterhood), needs to cower a nasty scar or has an important message to tell people (A-, allergy to penicillin), I consider said person an idiot. No, you are not edgy, if you have a "fried rice" Chinese character on your shoulder, barbed wire around your arm or a dolphin on your ankle. I do not see a rebel, I do not see an individual, I see an idiot, serial number 482649572.

SJW is short for "social justice warrior", someone, who takes neo-marxists ideas to modern issues, someone, who sees the society as a class struggle. Although a class now is not only "proletariate" or "bourgeoisie", but it is defined by various standards, sex, sexual orientation, skin colour, religion etc. SJW believes that there is a struggle between a group that holds power and a group that is oppressed. No middle ground. Whatever bad happens to women (they make on average less than men) is caused by patriarchy, evil society dominated by men (and not by the fact that women raise babies and thus stay at home for several years during their lives). An SJW has usually a very clear ladder of oppression, where the worst opressor is a combination of certain characteristics (white heterosexual non-trans male, either christian or atheist, with no disabilities and from non-immigrant background). Changing any of the characteristics "earns" you points on something that is by evil people like us called "the oppression olympics" - according to wiki: Oppression Olympics is a term used to describe verbal banter between allegedly marginalized groups, who are trying to determine the weight of their overall oppression, often by comparing race, gender, socioeconomic status or disabilities, in order to determine who is the worst off, and the most oppressed.

I don't even know what to say, except that people already know the potential consequences of getting tattoos. Tattoos may have been fad in the past, but they aren't anymore. SPECIFIC THINGS some people get tatted might be parts of fads, and some may regret them, but others will see them as reminders of things that made them happy in the past, and that makes it a non issue. Stupid people may get stupid tats, and they may regret them, and you know what? That's a perfect example of great consequences. They will always be reminded of how stupid they were, and that's a good thing! Maybe that will keep them from doing more stupid things moving forward, it's called growth!

Dude, you couldn't be more correct. I'm 64 and when I see a tattoo on an older woman I think, "Idiot". What is she trying to do? Reclaim her lost youth? Instead, she looks like a desperate, stupid delusional fool.

I'm on Tinder and there are so many beautiful women in their 20's with tattoos. I don't understand the whole fad honestly. Need those likes and dopamine reward on Instagram and Facebook I guess. Saw a regular at the bar the other night. He use to be "normal", now he has a man bun and sleeve tattoo. These people, I'm telling you. Always chasing, never satisfied.

"tatts" will never cease to make me cringe. I have tattoos. People who say they have "tatts" or are "tatted up" are letting me know to steer clear of them, at least.

A friend of mine has a theory that the rise of tattoos in due to the decline of religion and its coming of age rituals. That is, tattoos represent a secular search for a higher meaning in life.

Decline of religion? or decline of christian religion. Some "religions" are ok with tattoos, and tattoos are part of some cultures. I do agree that a tattoo should have thought put into it since it is mostly permanent. But I don't believe it's a decline of religion.

And that's why you should always get one (if you get one) that has meaning and not because it "looks cool" :D You make very valid points. I have a few and have had them for a long time and each one brings back fond memories of family that have passed and milestones in my life.

I like tattoos but I never got one for a few reasons but ultimately, it is because tattoos are an attempt to tell people who you want them to think you are. I would rather demonstrate my traits through word and deed. And I have other interests on which I would rather spend my money.
@yvesheinrich5013
@yvesheinrich5013 2 года назад
I don't wish that would be the case. I got my tattoos solely by my decisions and they're second to none next to who am I as an individual, my actions, my personality, and my purposes, and my tattoos represent none of it. I live and let live.
@dsbiddle
@dsbiddle 2 года назад
@@yvesheinrich5013 everyone with tattoos says that. No insult - get whatever tattoos you want and enjoy them. I like tattoos and I was thinking about getting one. I love the aesthetic. I just haven’t been able to justify it because for me, tattoos are about how other people see me or how I can portray myself to others, not about who I am to myself in my mind based on what I say and do and think. Live your life and get some cool tattoos or don’t.

I have three daughters. All born in the mid to late seventies. When they were teenagers, middle daughter [the rebellious one] said Dad what's wrong with getting a tattoo of something pretty on my shoulder. I was adamantly against it and used to point out young women in stores and restaurants with hideous multiple tattoos all over and said how they transformed an attractiv girl into a walking billboard. Well, One morning my [rebelious] daughter sat down to breakfast and low and behold she had a little fairy tattooed on her shoulder! I was SO disappointed in her until she laughed and got up, walked over to the sink and washed off that fake tattoo and said with a grin, Dad I wouldn't do that to you because I know how you feel about tattoos on girls

My son was 5 years old and we were in line at Universal Studios waiting in line for the E.T. ride. 2 grandmas were really upset and were mumbling about my boy's tattoo. A fake dragon....put on 30 minutes before. He was on his game and told the granny that his mom forced him to do it and it really hurt. The old ladies were horrified until he said it was fake.
