I think the best and most accurate statement that sums up this incident entirely was “the defendant was willing to kill, he was willing to use deadly force in order to prevent himself from getting moderately hurt over a situation which he initiated”. That’s it, it sums up the entire thing and the whole reason that it was manslaughter.
@@petterblakstad8074 what? Of course he did. He’s not a cop. If he minded his own business and didn’t confront people about handicap placards, this wouldn’t have happened.

He was given 20 years. From the Wikipedia page : "The judge spared Drejka from the maximum sentence due to his cooperation with the police and his lack of prior convictions, but said that he was a wannabe cop and tough guy who tried to self-appoint himself as a handicapped parking space monitor."
Researching this, I learned he had four prior instances where he brandished a weapon at other drivers. This pos was definitely looking for a reason. He prob had a big boner while describing it to the detective, like he's submitting his report. This auxiliary bastard.!

If he didn’t know by that point, he should have definitely caught on & ended the interview when the interrogator denied knowing what force multiplier means.
@haleyxyz I guess he thought he was going to talk his way out of a homicide. That response should have tipped him off that was not going to happen. Even if he thought he was justified, he should have exercised his right to remain silent & have an attorney present from the start.
As a medic in the military for 10 years, as well as working as an EMT as a civilian, I was astonished when they said that!! 19 minutes is a very long time. Ambulance should be with their patient in under 10 minutes.
That's wild. Here in Canada, an ambulance is there within minutes unless you live in a really remote area. 19 minutes...what the hell? Someone dropped the ball on that one.
I am a paramedic in a rural county. Sometimes it takes >25min to get to a scene in the outskirts of our area. (I don't know the area mentioned here). Everyone should know basic trauma care if they can. Looking more into the area... This is not a rural town (lol, I'm sure you all knew that already). That being said it looks like 9miles from the nearest EMS station - with traffic right now (2:20pm) it is a 26min drive according to google. Some things that I don't know about applicability or not. Some EMS services are not allowed to go on scene until law enforcement clears the scene. They may have been waiting on the corner for 10min frustrated out of their minds wanting to help, but not allowed by protocol until PD cleared the scene. Lights and sirens doesn't shave off as much time as you may think. Maybe they didn't have a unit available at the time of the call. Take all that as you will. Hope this perspective helps. (This is all just from my personal experience and opinions).
excellent lessons to be learned by viewers though. after seeing all these videos, including the innocent ones, i am not talking to any of these guys without a lawyer.
It`s honestly astounding that the detectives managed to have a demeanor that had Micheal think they were on his side. That schmuck 100% thought they would take his side
They did take his side. The sheriff's office did not charge him stating it was self defence. The only reason he was prosecuted was because the District Attorney's office took over the investigation
I’ve been disabled since I was 17. I don’t leave my house much and I have a caregiver who does most of my shopping. I still drive, but not enough to have cared about getting the disabled placard. The manager of the gas station near my house knows about my health and gave me permission to use the disabled spot if everywhere else is full (you usually gotta park across the parking lot when the spots are taken). I had a man stop and circle my car like that once. It scared the hell outta me cause I was alone and I figured he was looking for the placard and gonna give me a hard time. When I got out he started yelling and cursing at me, calling me a punk kid (I’m 35, but look young) and threatening to call the cops. When I said I had permission from the manager he said “yea that’s what they all say”. Finally I just said that I was in heart failure and had a pacemaker and he stopped. People suck sometimes.
Im 22 and occationally use a crutch to walk if my chronic disease is in a flare-up period. I dont have a license, but sometimes my mom will give me a ride to the grocery store when its bad. Using the handicap spot is something we do during those times because its much closer to the store and i leave my crutch at home when grocery shopping if at all possible, because its really hard to constantly have one hand occupied and the other hand having to hold the basket as well as grab items. So i know ill be walking alot unassisted and if i can cut the distance, i will. We dont have a placard in my moms car and im always a little nervous that someones gonna confront me - especially because i wont have my crutch with me and i look healthy.
Hi I am Australian, am 46 and have a chronic lung condition however look perfectly healthy. I have a disabled parking permit which I use only when I really need it. I have been verbally abused by able bodied people who are no more than sticky beaks and I initially was intimidated by the abuse but now I stand my ground. The Australian government have recognised my illness and have deemed it ok for me to park close to the entrance of the shops, it’s quite ok. I am sorry this happened to the people who have commented, sending lots of Aussie love out to you all. X
The whole vibe I got from this guy was a denied soldier, an unfit cop, couldn’t even land a job as a security guard. I feel like this guy has been waiting his entire life for an opportunity to be a hero in some fantasy he conjured up. The way he spoke to these police officers made me feel that way.
Yep..exactly..its kind of pathetic but when I was 21 I was hired as security to look for bombs in the Marriott hotel in times square new York City after a 12 hour class (which was 2 that tbe instructor gave us tbe answer for ..and I was on opiates) . ..he obviously had problems that other people saw in him .. BUT he was a neighborhood watchmen which is very prestigious ...
Lee Ham it’s true. I feel really sad for both men, especially Markeis. He made a decision to honor his family with considerable aggression, and moments later he lost his one and only life. That’s it. He was cast into the eternal mystery. All because Michael Drejka wanted to be somebody, and never was.
I got the same vibe, he was so ready to defend himself on the self-defense grounds and he seemed to be the classical gun owner, dont tread on my lands, i vote trump type
5:35 the detective addressing the suspect as “partner” was a smart move. They could see this guy was a wannabe cop. He also repeatedly addressed him as sir which is very rare to address the suspect as that as it’s usually the other way around, which is exactly why the detective says it.

You win every fight you don't get into. As a gun owner it is your responsibility to be a good, sane, sober, moral, prudent person! This dude was stupid for thinking it was his responsibility to play citizen cop over a handicapped spot.
Ananda Mañana AGREED! He had no problem going toe to toe with the woman but as soon as the man comes out he’s in the fetal position aiming to kill. LOSER. I’m glad he got 20 years.
@XvX XvX this dude pulled a weapon on FOUR PEOPLE PRIOR TO THIS. He threatened two women with that gun as well. Was his life in danger then too? He is a menace. Let him rot in prison.
The defense attorney sounds like he was a yoga instructor in his past life. I can almost hear him say, "Just close your eyes and breathe. Nice and calm. Breathe in and breathe out. Let your thoughts focus on your breathing and your body. Feel the energy at your toes, and then feel that energy move up as you stretch." As always, great analysis. Love these videos.
Yeah, like who made him the parking police? Unless youre disabled and needed the parking bay yourself, its no ones business who has a placard or not. I have a placard and never use the disabled bays. Seems the other bays were closer than the disabled one anyway.
Watching those people in the background react to the defense attorney's very poor explanation was almost hysterical and also very sad. The family shouldn't be subjected to that, but I'm happy most people in that audience see right through that bullshit.
Probably a decade ago I was at the speedway at 62nd and Allisonville in Indianapolis. The guy in front of me was open carrying a pistol on his left hip. Every time the door chimed he spun around to look at who was at the door, eyes wide. Seeing this video reminds me of that guy.
43:46 Contrary to popular belief, treating the jurors like they’re stupid and then claiming the person who was murdered isn’t the real victim is actually a genius move and totally not career suicide
I support your sarcasm, but as the above poster said, doing what you described is literally the defense team's job. They have to give everything they have to defend you, and with a case where video evidence is against you, you've got little to lose by going all out. It doesn't necessarily mean that the attorney *believes* what they're saying, but it's their job to say it.
@@MattC78 Just because you pay someone to defend you in court, doesn't obligate them to give everything they have in defending you, especially if you're unwilling to listen to advice, or insist on a particular argument, or spent hours kneecapping your defense by giving a drawn out interview to the police beforehand.
It's laughable how he keeps holding/faking his hand injury but anytime he's asked if he needs a doc to look at it he refuses...i remember doing this in pre-school when i wanted to go home 'cause i hated it there and tried to fake a tummy ache or a headache to get the nurse to say i'm unfit to stay and i should go home...
But not the guy that actually defended him. When he said that the parking lot commando was the "Real Victim" that got NO favor with the jury. That one lady was like WTF?!?!
It's heartbreaking enough that this situation happened, but it's a whole new level of heartbreaking thinking about how it all happened right in front of the guys kids and girlfriend. I'm so sorry to him and his loved ones. An innocent life was taken because some clown felt tough with his gun
Look, the defendant shouldn’t have shot this guy, but everyone involved in the incident was stupid. They shouldn’t have parked in a handicap stall. He shouldn’t have been nosy and said anything (though many people would have), but the guy full on shoving the defendant to the ground was idiotic. When you put people in crazy, dangerous, chaotic situations you’re going to get a range of responses from them, and someone pulling out a gun and shooting you is one of them. It was unnecessary force but it’s silly to pretend like the decedent was innocent.
Every person involved made the same mistake, escalating the confrontation. The woman escalated the discussion to yelling, the husband escalated the yelling to physical assault and this guy escalated it to lethal force. All these people were always going to get this outcome, this lady probably Parks in handicap spots all the time and it was eventually going to be an issue, husband was bound to shove the wrong guy someday, and trigger finger was eventually going to get some idiot to shove him
@@indifferentadvocate1737 I think the big factor though is this guy with a gun and the intention to use it. people can get in arguments about parking stalls and shouldn't expect to get shot. because this guy was willing to escalate a conformation simply because he had a gun and the willingness to use it meant he could CAUSE an escalation with no regard for anyone else. if he did not have the safety of his gun, and the willingness to use it, he likely would not have approached the car at all. that's the problem.

Completely unjustified use of deadly force. Drejka was rightfully conviceted. Though i will say that marquis's decision to physically assult drekja cost him his life. Never act like this unless you absolutely must, there are plenty of unhinged people who wont think twice before ending your life over the most trivial things. Drejka wanted an excuse to use his weapon and unfortunately he found it.
@Arturo Ordaz I agree with you but there is one thing I believe you are missing.....the original post he said "obsessed with" but you said "interested in".... Big difference...
but that exactly the reason why he shoot. he was amateur and he feels threaten (weakling). so he shoot. you see feeling threatened is "subjective". it is measured by who you are and what you are capable of. if you pushed hard on arnold schwarzenegger down the floor. he won't feel threaten at all he might come to you and break your neck. if you pushed hard on tom hidelston down the floor. he'll feel threaten for sure. and he'll stand up and say "I'm a god you dull creature" then get beaten to death.
28:00 This conversation is revealing. The detectives essentially ask Drejka if he'd be so willing to have these interactions with people if he was unarmed, and Drejka basically doesn't have an answer and justifies it with the fact that he's been carrying a firearm for so many years. I think people like this genuinely never consider that they ought to meter their behavior _because_ they feel they have the ability to "respond to a threat" and "defend themselves." Given the confidence of ever-present "backup" and the ability to end any conflict with finality, they don't feel like they're taking significant risks by initiating conflicts, however minor, and provoking negative responses in other people.
He absolutely does. I live in an area FULL of these kinds of folks. They feed on a steady diet of Right-wing radio and TV, and combine a grandiose sense of self-importance with a finely-tuned persecution complex. I have friends and family just like this guy; talking to them leaves you with the disturbing sense that they are DYING for the chance to drop someone.
@Enclave Soldier That's not even close to what I said. I spent 27 years in a cult. I know firsthand how indoctrination works. And in the same way that religious ideology can lead to extremism, so can political ideology. Don't misunderstand - I don't for a SECOND believe that conservatives have the market cornered on insanity. You have zealots all over the place. I do, however, have plenty of people in my life with a certain political narrative that sound exactly like Mr. Drejka. It's not hard to see how a constant reinforcement of that narrative can lead to direct action in the real world.
It's heartbreaking seeing McGlockton backing away and Drejka _still_ choosing to end his life. That's where any empathy I might have had for Drejka being struck first ends.
KA- BOOM!!! Oh my god your way of thinking makes my iq drop... the only guy here in the wrong is the dude with the gun. Everyone with simple logic thinking understands this.
When the defense pointed out the defendant's reaction as a point in his favour I was in disbelief! Someone reacting completely indifferently to finding out they killed someone isn't what I'd consider a win for the defense.
Specifically in a case like this where one of the main arguments from Mr. Shooty is that the guy was walking towards him. Even SD video can show a footstep clear enough.
@@josephstauter255 Hell, the display on a TI-88 calculator could show that much. I'm assuming his attorney is a court-appointed public defender (just started watching), but I hope he's not, honestly. Anybody having to deal with this guy and represent him in court deserves better pay than public defenders. yes I know it's awful that somebody even has to try to defend people like this, but it's the law and the foundation of our court system. The attorneys know there's no chance of winning, but somebody has to take the case. Usually an attorney in need of work/public defender.
if pixels have anything to do with not being able to see certain things in the footage, then it is an argument. Can't be your main one, but it can be used.

Personally whenever I see a car in the handicap spot and it's not handicapped marked, I assume they've just forgotten their handicap sticker especially if it's one that goes on the dashboard, or they're in a vehicle they don't normally drive or ride in... And maybe I see them walking easily and effortlessly into the building but I just go on with my life. I feel I'll leave that up to the experts to give them a ticket or a fine.
Yeah and also, they may walk easily back BECAUSE they parked in that spot and they got to spare their legs from a longer walk that would exhaust them. i have a litle tumor in my knee and if i dont overextend myself i walk totally fine, i can run, jump, whatever. But a grocery trip really wipes me out because its a long time of ambling slowly around, standing still at regular intervals and shifting weight around on your legs, etc. If i dont park close to the door ill likely be limping a little as i walk back to my car. But if i get a spot close to, you might not always be able to see that i have trouble walking and occationally even use a cane. It's all a spectrum and it can be super decieving.
My dad had one of those placards because he had coronary heart failure and was prone to heart attacks from over exertion. He walked normally but if he had to rest regularly, even on grocery runs
Personally, whenever I see a car parked in a handicapped spot, I don’t even look for a placard because I’m already parked somewhere else, and it’s not my job to police that kind of thing.
There was no chance he was going to ask to talk to a lawyer. This guy saw himself a cop basically, he was very happy to talk to the police and tell them what a good job he did.
