You are correct on what A/F stands for. The first A/F 40 bolt oil pan gasket I put on. I use a impact and the first bolt that I tighten, the gasket blew out both sides. It was a brown color and had to snug the bolts. That gasket material did not last long. Then they came out with a green color gasket. As asbestos had to be removed, Cat was struggling to find something that worked. The green gasket would shrink over time and the bolts would get loose. Seen many Cat 3406 with wet spots around gasket joints. On the 3408 the fuel room guys would put two gaskets on certain spot to stop the leak. I showed a Cat rep on one 3406, turned the front cover bolt 1/2 turn on a fairly new engine. I would retorque front cover bolts, before they got a lot of miles. The green gasket would absorb the oil and not repel it. Once gasket was oil soaked the bolts would start to loosen up. Now the big one, head gaskets. Mainly during the 4MG series and a SL was out, that was prorated. The dreaded red head gasket. Guaranteed to fail before overhaul. We had eight trucks in the shop at one time with blown head gaskets. Also during this change over. Some bright engineer removed the steel spacer plate and replaced it with aluminium. That added to the failure, as the material of the gasket did not like the material of the spacer plate. The red gasket had a teflon coating if I recall. Head bolt torque was increased to 370FT LBS, did not help. So second step was to remove the red coating on the bottom if I recall with limealene (not sure of the spelling). So you would lay your worthless red head gasket on cardboard. Get your limealene and put some on a rag and remove the coating, turning the bottom side back to black. Put gasket on, torque bolts to 370 and hope it gets out of warranty. The red head gasket was changed and they was no longer red. The next gasket did better and the head bolt torque was dropped back down. Finally Cat figured it out and the head gaskets do a good job.
Hey man your videos are very helpful, I start a apprenticeship with kenworth next week and start taking diesel tech classes in September. Maybe a different company but your videos are very educational.
Fun fact, Adept Ape's uniform is what was used when I worked for one whole dollar a day as I did my 6 month sentence working for VADOT and I appreciated every second. Had a job waiting when I got out and have been clean ever since, except for grease, oil, dirt and sometimes mayonnaise. Edit: I'm not getting paid to sell jail but I did stay at a Holliday Inn Express once. Anyways they had real mattresses and showers with both hot and cold knobs instead of the spring loaded freezing scalding freezing off button and we got to vote on DVDs the Deputy would bring in and play. Don't delay, don't do what I did today.
Power probes ROCK!!! Been using mine since the original one came out. Truly a tool that's worth it's weight in gold. Good vidja as usual man, I enjoyed it👍😃
On C-10, C-12 engines, if the EUI roller part number starts with a 115 part number. You better replace it before it fails. Also head gasket depends on straight block, scalloped block, if I recall.
I like the hi and low temp indicators I got the snapon thermal laser I like it it goes hi temp for regen diagnostics but I like the functionality of this top don
I'm glad I gave up being a mechanic 20 years ago. I liked what I did but glad I gave it up. I've met very few old mechanics and zero old body shop people. I did it until I was 30 and tossed the dirty diesel oil covered boots in the trash and moved on.
FYI My C7 is at the local diesel mechanics Shop. Hoping to get that misfire diagnosed. It’s gotta be either fuel (injector) or compression. Don’t know what to hope for.
I love your work Josh, I’m hoping to become a diesel mechanic myself and being blind you do very good descriptions of what you do, I appreciate you very much, keep up the excellent work.
My mentor many years ago always made me pull torque turn by hand. I think it was because his old CP wasn't strong enough hahaha. Once I was outta the engine shop I never pulled torque turn again. "We ain't building rocket ships" ;)
Love a good DOTW, and this channel. Wish I still had Cat engines in my trucks. I’ve got a DD15 with an intermittent miss that’s driving me nuts trying to figure out
You have to love those neglected machines used by construction companies; I guess after they were out of lights completely they decided they might as well give up and bring it to a mechanic
If they’re anything like the outfit I work with, their “mechanic “ spends about 20 minutes messing with it, rig up some way to make it work and run back to his AC
If you know what your doing pp also makes a 5v reference adapter I guess you'd call it jt goes on the end and limits power sent from 12 to 5v which can be helpful for signal diag
Case did not spend to much money on their lights, ever. My Dad had several pieces of Case equipment and the wiring was definitely the weak spot. Other than that, it was good, reliable equipment.
Josh could you provide the media number that says C11 & C13 head bolts should be replaced everytime. I work for a Cat dealer and will be replacing a C13 cam and I looked this up but did not find that those engine had non reusable head bolts
I'm surprised you don't have a cat s62 pro mobile phone it has a flir camera built in I love mine, very tough phone too have dropped mine many times including directly on the screen and it's only accumulated a few small scratches
I have torqued - loosened - re torqued new head bolts on C-10 engines in the past. It sure seems that you have stretched the new bolts then re-torqued them.
A/F American Factory??? Solid guess maybe. I still have 2-3406B's and 1-3406E they are fantastic engines that do not leak any oil and one of them is 35 years old (I fix oil leaks with genuine Cat parts) but unfortunately these trucks are illegal here in California but I just can't part with them yet, the trucks are all still intact, no rust and beautiful. Take care everybody and don't let Gavin Newsom come to your State.
I would think A/f would be arrangement/family group used to we had to order parts by A/r number I think now it's just by engine serial number kinda like Cummins with the CPL book.
ECM has serial number if not changed. Stamped in the block passenger side rear if I recall. If a truck engine you can call the OEM and see what was shipped.
Quick quiz everyone why would those 2 relays be so hot? A They are experiencing unusual high resistance/ohms B Too close to a heat source C they just get warm D None of the above
Joe, it seems that you got a bit carried away. Three separate posts of the same question? ? ? There could be several reasons the relays could be hot. 1, the windings in the coils could be shorting out. 2, excessive current draw from the circuit. 3, resistance in the contact points. 4 the relays could have been undersized ( not rated for the expected current draw ), in order for the manufacturer to keep their inventory count down. This will also lead to increased parts sales because the relays will fail more frequently and will have to be replaced. Sometimes this will require shop time to troubleshoot the problem, and possibly a road call or tow to the shop.
Lol I thought torquing my Honda head bolts to 80lbs was a stretch (all puns intended). F#** me 325 ft-lb for a Cat head bolt, that’s just nuts, as a Honda tech I’d have to break my 1/2 inch drive torque wrench 2 times over to get there (my 1/2 ‘’ maxs out at 250 I think)
Sorry if this is off topic but maybe you can answer why some car models (BMW/Mercedes) are labeled as "injection" which means it runs on gasoline. Isn't diesel considered injection as well?
They're likely direct injected, which means that there is a fuel injector that injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Direct injection for diesels has been the standard for around 30 or 40 years, but for gasoline engines it's relatively new (last 10 or so years). However, fuel injection in gas engines has been around in American vehicles since (I believe) the late 80s to early 90s in various separate types, which opens up a whole different can of worms going through them. The TL;DR of it is all that injection refers to on a gas engine is how the fuel delivered to the engine.
@@DeathHead1358 thanks I guess car makers were kind of bragging about the car having gasoline injection rather than a carburetor, diesels never run with a carburetor that I know of? So it was always injection. BMW/Mercedes still name their models with a D for diesel and I for gasoline since the late 80s
Great video :) Got a question for you hoping you could answer! I was wondering how does the cylinders in an engine get lubricated, like how does the oil end up on the cylinder walls?
@@helvete8498 It does all of these things. You have to cool the piston, also you need to lubricate the wrist pin and pin bore. Four bolt rods on a truck engine has oil hole in it. Upper rod bearing has a hole to allow oil to the top. As with any engine the oil ring is to control excessive oil on the cylinder wall. The main purpose of the piston rings is to dispel heat.
@@johngoldsmith6629 Okay I am wondering because im worried about buying an older engine model and something goes wrong with it that cannot be replaced because the part for that engine is no longer produced
@@johngoldsmith6629 I'm not building anything it was just a hypothetical concern I had haha couldn't find any answers on Google. I'm thinking of ways to stay EPA compliant but not have to deal with the risks of buying an old used engine
Hi sir please help me .my cat engine shut down if I run it . The computer give me a code but i dont no whtas is the problum . The code is ( spn 4007 Fmi 31 ) Num Occurrences. Please sir help me how cane I solve my problum
A/F. There is "that's cool A/F" (as fu...), you know. haha. Then there's "That's CAT A/F,".....you know, real gaskets, not the s4itty aftermarket ones. hahaha
that seems stupid if you a machine shop you are told to machine it yet you dont clean it off like hell go crazy with a wire wheel for a few mins before you start
Normally in to the hot tank, crack test pressure test then you start to repair. If someone gives me a reco part with paint on it i send it back to the tank
