Hi there, help me understand here, why small diesel sedans or some pickup trucks don't have exhaust brakes. at least when it comes to pick up trucks they weigh up to 3 tonnes, imagine them towing something, that number will be 4.5 tonnes which is like a small city truck. i think it should be necessary but they dont have engine brakes at all. Why?

It's junk. Do not putanything inyour oil. It messes up the balance of the additives your oil company uts in it. The oil and bearing people work together to do it rght.

I just started watching, but i remember when you pulled the valve covers. You had little to no oil to the rocker area then, and it won’t be better now. You have a lack of oil pressure to the rockers. you need to look at the oil delivery system. Yes, you might need lifters, but that is a symptom, not a cause.

From my understanding the ecotec engines or any fuel saving engine cuts fuel off to those certain cylinders saving fuel but what they don’t tell you is the fuel acts as. Lubricant to the cam lobes.. so I take it both of the back cylinders were the ones that get cut off.software hacks you can do to keep the ecotech mode off there by keeping engine lubricated .. now the world knows. Moment.. ecotech great on gas but very short life..

So I have the 3126. In a 1998 Pete 330 retrofit 14 whl dumptruck. Running Class 8 @ 61,000lbs GVW. Yep. Thanks to positive input from Josh and a very competent and FEARLESS local mechanic we run it hard every day in the desert metropolitan market. Bought 1.5 years ago from a reputable builder (was a trade in) but the cups failed on the fourth day in service . Rather than the Cat kit with new cups and special tool, I was offered the option of going with the Cat reman head which seemed a valid upgrade. Now running HARD every day with zero issues. ------- Note to all: The HEUI system DEMANDS clean engine oil for top efficiency and engine (HEUI pump) life. It MUST be changed every 250 hours REGARDLESS of the miles (or 5,000mi). That's once a month for us. Cat filter/Rotella. 709,000mi/33,000 hrs currently and the shop says the flywheel has been machined thus far to suggest replacement at next clutch. This "may" be an indicator of (guessing) the history of the pistons/bore condition. If still original, I'll be the first long block guy on this one lol! Long story short folks, Cat rules. Cheers!

Looking for a coolant drain just seems so quaint to me. Most stuff here in Europe hasn’t had a dedicated coolant drain for decades, you just take the lower hose off the rad. God how I wish we still had drains. Even my old 80s BMW didn’t have one, or my 1970s Reliant Scimitar (which had a Ford 3 litre V6). Perhaps even more quaint is seeing pushrods in such a modern engine. I can’t even remember the last pushrod engine in production over here. I actually really liked pushrods, especially in a high cam engine so the rods were short, it made head gasket changes so much easier.

Good find on this, and good job trusting your gut on this one. I'm surprised with that damage that you didn't feel more of an imbalance in the engine operation, maybe you did and didn't discuss it. All of that extra junk they put on modern vehicles is annoying to me too, but it comes down to various regulations and standards for NVH (Noise/Vibration/Harshness), and especially noise. There are regulations around how loud a vehicle can be from the outside, basically reducing how much it annoys people walking down the street. You can remove those extras without causing harm to the engine (although the balance shafts you might want to keep). That noise cover over the engine would be one you could consider not reinstalling, the question is how much you want to hear that V6 yourself while driving. I've never known a GM V6 to produce inspired sounds. Overall, I agree, GM has a tendency to make engines that are pretty good and pretty simple to work on. And yes, the torques are way, way lower than you're used to on Cats. 🙂

Most public libraries have access to some type of an online repair manual service. You can go there and look up what you want and print out the repair process pages for a small fee.

3406B was hands down the best Cat engine ever. I also had a 3406E and a 3176. Not bad engines, but nowhere nearly as reliable or easy to work with as the 3406B. You can have everything that came after 2006. I never pumped the first gallon of that piss water into a truck and thankfully,I never will.

Back in 1977 there was an old green Chevy van at work. The guy that drove it had worked there a long time. The van used quite a bit of oil but ran well. When the engine started clicking at a stoplight, he would lift up the inside engine cover and put oil in the engine until it stopped clicking. The light would turn green and away we go. He said he had been doing this for several years. 😊
