I'm sure I read that Lady Sarah burnt a lot of Diana's letters and that's why he protected the princess's property. And Diana's brother was very unkind to her. And I didn't applaud his speech because he blamed everyone for her death. But he was a contributor because of his refusal to help her.

Diana's brother Earl Spencer had promised Diana Garden House on the family's Althorp Estate. She hadn't any holiday/weekend escape, and was SO excited to have a place of her own to relax in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside ( I used to live very nearby). Diana even took with her an interior designer and was plsnning sll the furnishings and decorating. THEN...Charles Spencer then had a change of heart and said she couldn't move into the family home because of all the extra security etc. Diana was so heartbroken that I don't think she ever spoke to her brother again. She was forced to seek rich people out for holidays to be with her boys (hence Mr.Fayed holiday home in South of France. The royals all had Balmoral etc but she was stuck with only an apartment in London. She wanted a secure place to escape to with her children. How ironic that after Diana's tragic death Earl Spencer opened up his stables area as a full on exhibition dedicated to his sister and she was buried on a small island in the garden. In the exhibition was many if Diana's beautiful gowns .,.her original wedding dress...home cine films played continuously of her childhood. A library of books of condolences signed by thousands of the general public who would queue for hours to leave a message. There was an encased area full of perfumed petals from thousands of flowers left all around the impressive golden front gates and then placed over her grave on the island. A good fee was charged to enter Althorpe ....no inconvenience then? Paul was the only person other than family allowed to be part of the funeral to be with Diana right to the end....such was his close position and support to his boss. Diana's mother gave Paul £50 000 from will....such was how much the family held him in high regard for all his loyal service. He always said he knows a lot more and he will keep her secrets. He felt the Spencers were destroying far too much of her diaries, papers and letters so he told the Queen that he was looking after some of her things to give to the boys later...which she gave her blessing. He also later saw that her gifts to her godchildren in her will were disregarded and exchanged for cheap trashy items. Paul is a nice man who the Spencers treated appallingly .....the consequences of the bogus court case nearly pushed to the poor man to suicide. He was left broken and virtually bankrupt so he had to write a book to financially survive.

It is really interesting that Diana reached out to her brother and asked could she and her sons stay in a cottage on his property that fateful summer but her brother declined her request. I read that Diana had recently broken up with the heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and I am sure it would have been very beneficial for her to get away in the countryside with her sons to reflect and plan next steps. Instead Diana spent the time on a holiday cruise with Mohammed Fayed and his troubled son which led to tragic consequences. It is really sad that her brother would not help her.

He offered her a different house on the estate, she wanted the Garden House, the one that could be seen from the gate...., "the earl responded to his sister's request saying: 'I'm sorry, but I've decided that the Garden House isn't a possible move now. There are many reasons, most of which include the police and press interference which would inevitably follow.' 'I know you will be disappointed but I know I am doing the right thing for my wife and children. I am just sorry I cannot help my sister!' He described the state of their relationship, adding: 'I fear for you. I know how manipulation and deceit are parts of the illness [believed to be her eating disorders]… I pray that you are getting appropriate and sympathetic treatment for your mental problems. 'After years of neglect on both sides, our relationship is the weakest I have with any of my sisters… I long ago accepted that I was a peripheral part of your life, and that no longer saddens me. 'I will always be there for you, as a loving brother - albeit one who has, through 15 years' absence, rather lost touch.' The earl made clear that he offered Diana alternative houses on the estate, none of which she accepted." He wrote in his letter: 'In theory it would be lovely to help you out and I am sorry I can't do that

My personal takeaway has been that Paul genuinely loved and cared about Diana and i believe Lady Sara, her mom and brother were dreadfully jealous, particularlySarah whom Charles previously dated. Between emotional abandonment (regardless of physical intimacy with camilla or not in the beginning) her age, snobbery within the firm, character assassination seems to be the go to tool to take down people including Paul. i do not believe Diana had support in her family or much of the aristocracy within Buckingham Palace, and Paul knew this, and therefore, Paul was a danger to all of them. Just my opinion for whatever it’s worth. Paul is not perfect. He’s flawed like everyone else but I do believe the Diana‘s family and many of the other people that desire to cover up the truth we’re gunning for him and perhaps that is the genesis of all this controversy. Kudos to the lake Queen Elizabeth for caring enough to meet with him for two hours as I read in your comments. Again, thank you

I read both of Paul Burell’s books about Diana- A Royal Duty and The Way We Were- and it’s baffled me that William and Harry are so negative about him. They’ve obviously never read either book. Paul Burell is very loyal to Diana and is probably her biggest fan. Diana’s family really weren’t very kind to her and obviously resented that “the butler” was closer to her and knew her better than they did. The royals and the courtiers simply couldn’t comprehend that “the help” could be in a position of such closeness to their employer. Although, I think as she got older, Queen Elizabeth developed a relationship like that with her dresser, Angela Kelly. I think of Paul Burell as one of the good guys. I truly enjoy your videos. 😍

Diana and Paul Burrell had an argument just before she died and William would have known all about that. He has also lied about William [and probably Harry as well] and made claims that weren't factual. He has also used William to try and make himself seem more important claiming that they had meetings etc when proof has been given that these meetings never occurred but were made up by Paul Burrell. William at least has very very good reason to dislike Paul Burrell who is basically continuously using his mother to make a living, just like Harry and Meghan.

I think you are on the right track. At the time of the accusations against PB it did not sit well. I can see that he strokes himself when speaking to the media and plays heavily on his closeness with Princess Diana but the whole affair of the earrings and such did not ring true at all. I believe the Queen and the Firm knew what was afoot and in her intervening saved PB and also kept diplomacy with the upper class people involved and so it ended quickly and has been fairly quiet since. That is my opinion & I haven’t changed it over the years regardless of not particularly warming to PB. I feel Harry’s disgusting comment made in court recently about PB is pure jealousy because he has no memories of his mother other than those of a pre-pubescent child and he has unconscious bias against PB.

It doesnt put Diana in a very good light either. If you make damming tapes and keep them locked away that can only be for blackmail purposes. And isnt taping someone without their knowledge just a different form of hacking? I would love to see how this period is portrayed in 500 years time! Keep it up its all facinating! What wonderful nuggets of information, all those twists, I do vaguely remember news about Clive Goodman. Thank you Shauna for this really entertaining video ! Undeniably PB was incredibly loyal, low key in the years immediately after her death, and sees himself (as you said) the Defender of Diana and her sons given how close he was to them. As the media used him as an expert on Diana more regularly, with all the attention his ego got the better of him. His stories about Harry as a young boy are repeated with relish over and over again, trying hard to convince us of the truth of his connection. Newspapers at that time published the Queen had seen PB being escorted into the police station as she was driven past and she asked what happened. Soon after, the Queen put out a statement she had allowed PB to keep Diana's items for safe keeping. Most people believed this was definitely an intervened to protect the Royal Family, imagine if his case had gone to court with every detailed information of Diana, her boys rehashed publicly ? @@acommentator4452 Long before the era of tapping into mobile phones. Diana leaked it from memory but I also remember something about Diana having an argument with Paul Burrell before she died and that she had sacked him which is the main reason Prince William gets very annoyed with Paul Burrells actions. When she died they were allegedly NOT talking and he wasn't employed by her although I have no idea how true this is. Not am I that interested, whatever the ins and outs Paul Burrell has made a career for himself by selling Diana to the highest bidders, just like her son Harry has. So much of what he has said since has proved to be false - including all those ''meetings'' with William and Harry he claims took place - while there is NO WAY he can know after 25 years what Diana would or would not have thought on certain subjects. Especially as she was neither the most stable of people nor someone who kept her opinions unchanged over the years. She might like someone one minute but a few minutes later would be hating them and refusing to have anything to do with them, possibly due to her paranoia. If he had faded into the background and just left her memory as it was then I might just have looked more favourably on him but he is as keen as Harry to make his living from constantly raking over Diana's memory, and the only thing BOTH of them have achieved is to ensure that Diana's memory has been well and truly trashed as people have done their own research and discovered that while she happily blamed everything on Charles at the time - something her followers have continued to do - the reality was that it was DIANA who was sleeping around with all and sundry, married and unmarried and who cared how many families she broke up in the process, with Paul Burrells assistance. Yet NONE of this would really have come out into the public domain if Paul Burrell and Harry hadn't spent the past < 25 years making a living from her memory, what's more neither of them have ever spent more than a couple of seconds - if that - worrying or thinking about what it is doing to her oldest son William or her grandchildren. Thanks to them all of her many sins are now public knowledge and the pair of them have done more to destroy her memory than anyone else has.

@@musicandbooklover-p2o Yes, I too can't help being cynical about anyone in a close relationship to royalty who is putting out these gossip books for personal financial gain. In fairness, a lot of the negative news about Diana came out immediately after her death, before any books were published, and from numerous sources. Non-public figures who had first-hand knowledge of stuff that was damaging to Diana's reputation, who would otherwise have kept their mouths shut for fear of repercussions, fear of losing their jobs etc, were freed by her death to say whatever they wanted - and they did. Whereas if Diana had continued living for another four decades as expected, we the public would have to wait it out to hear anything other than the official version of events. To be honest, I feel that the revelations about Diana's less saintly side has been really important to give the public a chance to make sense of what happened with Charles and Diana and the monarchy. The sanctification of Diana and the demonising of Charles ( and Camilla), which started decades ago and still continues, and is practically a cult, is unfair to both Diana and Charles as human beings. It distorts history to reduce such people to either icons or villains.

Why? Diana was going to let Burrell go because she caught him going through her correspondence, but the crash happened. He wasn't liked by other staff as he was sly. My feelings about Paul come from listening to him speak ‘The Revenge Dress’ story he’s a proud of, is a glaring example of him over involved with Princess Diana’s private feelings. He has no trouble speaking of her private feelings, after her death. I’m a year younger than Princess Diana would be so, I saw all this stuff in US tabloid headlines, at the grocery check out. He acted as her enabler when what she needed was she private counselling, to put her marriage behind her and prepare to moved on, without repeating mistakes. I know now, how young 35 is. In Valentine Low's "Courtiers", there is reference to Diana's distance from sister Lady Jane Fellowes due to conflict with her courtier (private secretary to Queen Elizabeth) husband, Robert Fellowes. There was another author (whose name escapes) who also stated that Diana was estranged from her family after her divorce due to feeling she had not received proper support for them in her time of need. One can imagine: Lady Sarah calls sister Lady Jane after meeting with Burrell, who then mentions the chat with Burrell to husband over dinner, who then contacts his news sources from his Buckingham Palace office the next day for (cough, cough) any news of Burrell--not really a stretch you know.

Yes, Diana and her siblings hated their father's second wife Raine. As a young child Diana witnessed her father hitting her mother, and that cannot have helped Diana's own tendency to hit (Charles, and also Raine, whom she pushed down a flight of stairs). Hatred was no doubt the reason why the Spencer siblings showed no respect for their father's grieving widow in evicting her the house she had lived in with her husband for all 2 decades, almost as soon as his funeral was over. In common decency they should have allowed Raine a month or two to find herself a new permanent home, and allowed her to be the one to deal with her husband's clothes and personal things. It's hard to understand, but Diana apparently became friends with Raine not long before Diana died. Perhaps they both bonded over mutual dislike of Diana's mother Frances?( Diana had by that time broken off all contact with her mother).

I remember reading about the court case when it was happening. I could never understand why Diana Princess of Wales would ask PB to take her belongings from the safety and security of Kensington Palace to his home in Cheshire?

Probably because her family would have taken them

but was it she who asked him ?? it was after her death, which was totally unexpected that he took them, for safe-keeping. and he had mentioned that to the queen, who did not object

at least the Queen wrote in a journal everyday of her life almost, and in 100 years, we will all know the truth@@acommentator4452

Very interesting. I’ve always been not completely sure about Paul Burrell. I haven’t read his book. So funny Francis Shand Kydd becoming “chatty after lunch”. I’m sure I read somewhere that Diana pushed her mother down some stairs as well as the well known pushing Acid Raine down the stairs. Love your posts ❤️
