Montressor uses reverse psychology all through. He also uses it when he tells his servants not to leave the house while he's away, so that later, there would be no witnesses when he brings Fortunato around, and none of the servants would admit that they snuck out to go to the festival.

@julietfischer5056

Poe's darkest stories were free of the overtly supernatural ('Metzengerstein' involves reincarnation). Only in his humor pieces (Toby Dammit, Out of Breath to name a couple) do people deal with the Devil. If Montresor heard bells, there would be a rat in the alcove and he'd be confessing out of guilt.
@hotrodjmanofficial448
@hotrodjmanofficial448 3 года назад
I think then it'd be too similar to The Tell-Tale Heart(or vice versa, whichever came first) because the ending of that story has the murderer hear the beating of the old man(the person he killed)'s heart when the police come in to investigate.

I think the point is that Fortunato was someone who was written to be unluck in this story or that his luck has run out so him coming back from the dead would ruin the irony of the killing.

Yet we don't know what any of them were. Was Fortunato oblivious to his own cruelty? Was he an inveterate prankster who went too far one day? Did Montresor have a thin skin and easily-bruised ego? Or did he have good reason for wanting revenge?

+slendy9600 i'm not sure about the episode number, but in it, Billy's family was forced to live with Mandy's family on account of one of their houses being destroyed. Billy and Mandy share a room, completely don't get along, and split it in half. Billy does something stupid, and Mandy gets revenge on him by ceiling him up. They even ended the episode in the same way that Poe ended the story - Billy's eyes peek through the final brick in the wall as Mandy seals it lol

I'm so glad you chose this one! "A Cask of Amontillado" is my favorite short story, but it's not as famous as, say, "The Tell-Tale Heart." It's even better when you keep in mind that Poe write it while in the midst of a rivalry with another writer, a Mr. English, who had just published a novel that depicted a parody of Poe who was constantly obsessing over a "Lenore." The short story about revenge was born out of revenge! A few suggestions for the future: "The Piano Teacher" (totally 'effed up, but a fascinating novel). "The Fall of the House of Usher" "Waiting for Godot" "Lorena Doone" "The Red Badge of Courage" "The Secret Garden" "Flowers for Algernon" Anything by H.P. Lovecraft would be welcome as well.

How about the irony that as the story builds up in the rising action, they descend further into where the supposed cask of Amontillado is? My English teacher freshman year got so pissed at the entire class because none of us could figure it out... Like a solid 10 minutes of silence before she snapped and told us. Will never forget that lol

To grok or not to grok - that is the grok: Whether 'tis nobler in the grok, to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous grok, Or to take arms against a grok of troubles, And, by opposing, grok them. To die, to grok - No more - and by a grok to say we grok The heartache and the thousand natural groks That flesh is grok to - 'tis a grok. Devoutly to be groked. To grok, to grok no more - To grok, perchance to dream. Aye, there's the grok, For in that grok of death what groks may grok, When we have groked off this mortal grok, Must give us grok. There's the grok That makes calamity of so long grok. For who would grok the whips and scorns of grok, Th' grok's wrong, the proud grok's contumely, The pangs of despised grok, the grok's delay, The insolence of grok, and the spurns That patient grok of the ungroky takes, When grok grokself might his grok make With a bare grokin? Who would fardels grok, To grunt and sweat under a weary grok, But that the grok of something after grok, The ungroked country from whose bourn No grok returns, puzzles the grok And makes us rather to bear those groks we grok Than fly to others that we grok not of? Thus conscience does grok groks of us all. And thus the native grok of resolution Is groked o'er with the pale cast of grok, And enterprises pf great grok and grok, With this regard their groks turn awry, And grok the name of grok. -Soft you now, The fair Grok. -Grok, in thy orisons Be all my groks groked. Well, did I grok it? You be the grok.

Didn't Montresor actually give Fortunato amontillado before he left him?

I don't think so, they shared some other kind of wine while they were walking up to the "amotillado"

Just discovered the channel and I love it. I know you mostly do older works, but it'd be awesome if you did The Name of the Wind someday.

The Masque of the Red Death is my favorite Poe story, but The Cask of Amontillado is tied with The Pit and the Pendulum for my second favorite story. The Conqueror Worm is my favorite Poe poem.

I didn't know for a while that Poe wrote this basically as a dis track on his rival, Thomas Dunn English, but now that I know that, it makes the whole thing even better.

My favorite bit of irony in this story is in the bells and motley Fortunato is wearing to celebrate the Carnival. The last sound we hear is the joyful sound of the bells as his head slumps in resignation.

I did not understand at all when I read it. I didn't even realize Fortunato was a person. Thankyou for the enlightenment.
