These two were one of the best on-screen couples I've ever seen and their chemistry together was so damn good. Rumours have swirled since the show's end that Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic fell out with each other and the rumours have persisted. Despite this I don't believe these two had a breakdown in their friendship that led to on-set difficulties. They always appeared to have a close friendship along with Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas, who have both been in Nathan's show "The Rookie" in cameo appearances after Castle ended. If the friendship between Nathan and Stana had soured, I don't think that Seamus and Jon would want to work with Nathan beyond Castle, especially since he was the one accused of poorly treating Stana towards the end of Castle's run. The way their on-screen relationship in the first five seasons was crafted was as close to perfect as you can get and the show's best moment was arguably the "first real kiss scene" at the end of the Season Four finale "Always". Castle's peak was probably the second-to-last episode of Season Six titled: "Veritas" where the main antagonist of the show was finally arrested. Immediately after that episode came "For Better or Worse" which led to enormous backlash because they spent the whole of the sixth season building up to a Caskett wedding only to pull the rug out from under us in the finale. In the early seasons of Castle one of the driving forces behind the development of the relationship between Castle and Beckett was to make it as close to an "organic progression" as possible, without making it look like events had been "manufactured" to drive a wedge between the two characters or force their hands. Up until the sixth season finale they had done a good job of keeping things organic but the way the final episode of the sixth season was crafted left me thinking that they had abandoned this path and had decided to put a manufactured "road block" in between the two characters by having Castle run off the road on the way to their wedding as well as the scarcely believable plot line that Beckett had been unknowingly married to someone else for 15 years or so. After that point the show remained a good enough quality and there were still some strong moments, but it had gone past its peak and the two showrunner changes hindered rather than helped it and it fell to its inevitable demise in the eighth season.
Very well put. 100% agree with you. 'For better or for worse' was the biggest back stabbing episode I have ever watched. I stopped watching Castle because of it. Recently I've been doing a re-run but I have no intention of watching season 8 because from what I hear, it's horrible. I like to pretend it doesn't exist :D
@@Andreacherrypie yes the eighth season will forever be remembered for the six-episode arc at the beginning of it which left a sour taste in many fans mouths. Plus they had to further expand the Bracken back story despite it seemingly being done and dusted with his arrest in the penultimate episode of season six. There were still some good episodes despite this but clearly the mythology behind it had become a bit far-fetched if I'm honest.
Totally agree with you. Some of the stories after "For Better or For Worse" seem like plot devices that reversed the "organic" growth of the relationship, and Season 8 really crushed long-time fans' interest. However, at least the acting was still top notch. I also find the rumours of the Fillion/Katic feud hard to believe. Chemistry like theirs could not be sustained without people who had at least a high respect for each other. To support your argument, I would also add that as late as 2015, Katic wished Fillion Happy Birthday on Twitter while Seamus Dever declared that he, Jon Huertas, Katic and Fillion were "all good friends" in an interview. This would contradict the story that Fillion had been bullying Katic "for years", as stated in the inflammatory article in Us Magazine. Furthermore, the Us Magazine article, which only quotes an "unnamed insider", seems to be the only one that is referenced by all the gossip experts on the Internet, but is enough to get the rumours to perpetuate. Finally, it seems strange that these rumours only came out when Katic's contract was not renewed and the show was cancelled, which would have been well after the final episode had been filmed. If there had been so much tension on set, why did word not leak out much sooner? It all seems like a tabloid magazine's attempt to sell a story to fans already angry with the show's demise.
@@carsonrivers2853 thank you for such a great reply. In regards to the storytelling, I don't think it was necessary to bring the villain LokSat into the show. When Senator Bracken was arrested they closed the door on Beckett's long faught journey to get justice for her mother's murder and appeared to be setting it up for her to move onto a new life married to Castle. The "For Better or Worse" episode was to me a manufactured attempt to create drama and did not fit with their "organic relationship" philosophy, which is the reason why I don't like that episode. Then they made Beckett fall back down the rabbit hole by "breaking up" with Castle to pursue LokSat in Season 8, which I think was a grievous error and led to a huge backlash and a drop in ratings that eventually consigned Castle to the scrapheap. They eventually did get them back together to fight LokSat but by then the damage had already been done and viewers goodwill had diminished too much. I agree with what you said about the rumours of a falling out between Nathan and Stana. There is just no clear and obvious evidence to support these rumours but there is plenty out there to refute them. I just wished the real truth would come out about it to put it to bed so both actors can get on with their lives and not have to have it there in the background.
@@noelburland7169 I'm with you on all those points. The LokSat arc was just an add-on to the Bracken mythology to give Beckett and Castle another nemesis to chase with the Johanna Beckett connection, but separating the lead couple was a huge mistake and virtually destroyed the credibility of the storyline. It was almost as if Seasons 7 and 8 showed that the series was running out of original ideas. It's too bad, but I guess it shows how much the show had invested so much of the storyline into the Bracken conspiracy. In hindsight, his arrest should have been the end of the series (with the proper wedding to top it off). As you said, it would be nice if the record about Katic and Fillion was set straight publicly, if only for the fans to put it to rest. It's sadly remarkable how one well-timed rumour can be blown up on the Internet and be taken as gospel without any clear evidence, but tabloids are good at that. I have the feeling, though, that as professionals, Katic and Fillion have seen tons of Hollywood rumours and decided to not add any more fuel to the fire. There's a video out there of Fillion at a 2016 Comic-Con where he is philosophical about his shows ending and that he "doesn't take it personally." My guess is that this is also his approach to all the rumour-mongering.
