They say you learn best from your mistakes. Based on what is being done to your boat, you will be learning a heck of a lot in the near future once the boat hits the water, and has had some time to flex and bend with the waves and wind. Exposing the mistakes that will be causing you all sorts of problems. Don't become too attached to this boat, as she will not be long on the surface, but she will serve as a great teacher. Maybe your next boat venture, if you have one, will be the one to benefit from all the learning you will gain from this one. Good luck.

None of the "glass work" you did will hold-up. No prep, wrong materials and no experience. Drilling holes in the sugar scoops will make thing worst. On the outboard, take it off and have it serviced so it is dependable. The section of the ICW that you have been on is nothing compared to the currents you will be meeting in SC & GA. Controlling that cat with outboard only, is going to be a circus. Keep filming. Priceless.

While I am kind of digging the shade tree mechanic vibe of your refit, it does also make me cringe a bit when the think you call a “crack” is the deck to hull joint, which is critical to the structural integrity of your vessel if you ever try to go beyond the protected waters of the ICW and a single layer of glass is not going to help much if you sail in any kind of seaway more tempestuous than a bathtub. The wracking forces exerted on a catamaran are very very large because the wave train acts on the two hulls independently and in completely opposite directions. Wishing you all the best of luck. Please be careful.

The joint of top deck to hull glassing job will fail. Never put glass on top of gelcoat, always sand off the gelcoat to expose raw fibreglass for the new glass to get a full bond. There is also no strength in that seam due to the flange being cut off and no epoxy glue glueing the two parts together. I would suggest that you remove the glass that you applied and do it again properly after injecting epoxy glue into the seam joint. Then put several layers of glass over the joint to build it up to try to give it some strength. Also glass it on the inside as well for added strength.

What you need is to sand the area you want to glass. then clean it with acetone then apply the fiber glass. making sure you get the air out of it and add more resin over the fiberglass. and let it cure make sure you keep it dry while the resin bonds. then sand it and put more resin and fiberglass on the work you have already done when finished you can paint it after it has been sanded smooth

As others have said, it would be better to cut panels out of the sugar scoop steps to let them dry out before re-glassing and fairing them. But, the bigger issue is the hull to deck joint. It looks like you used a single lamination of 6 oz. fiberglass applied over gelcoat. So there isn’t a fiberglass on fiberglass bond and the lamination itself isn’t strong enough to resist the torsional loads that your boat will experience in any kind of active sea state. Typically an adhesive caulk, like 3M 5200, is used in combination with mechanical fasteners through a rubrail or toerail. You might be ok motoring through the ICW but I wouldn’t trust that joint for any sailing.

Sorry but no no no .... Epoxy is not the new duck tape. Epoxy is for gluing things together not for fiberglass lay ups. Whenever possible stick to the designers and manufacturers materials and construction technique. The rub rail is not just a rub rail it also connects the upper deck to the hulls. The screws that have been removed and glassed over held the upper deck to the lower hulls. That seam needs to be sealed with a good poly sealer and the rub rail put back on. Remove the scoops, they are very poorly done and will be a continuing source of trouble. Without the scoops it will be much easier to put the rudder system back on. With that said you are learning and that is good. You are motivated most people would not even try. I remember when I did my first boat over 30 years ago, it was a fantastic experience so I can really relate. You are doing well but you need better support for restoration and repair techniques. My new project is a Venture 224, deciding if I want to document it or not. Fair winds and be safe.

Hey guys, I want to keep this positive and I realize this latest video was done back before Thanksgiving. I am completely cool that you are not worried about making things pretty. I am not a professional, but my wife and I are life long avid boaters who are used to doing everything mechanical, electrical, and structural things on the cheap ourselves. I am worried that much of the fiberglass work you are doing, particularly below the water line are temporary at best. You really need to spend some time watching channels like Boat Works Today and Sail Life to get a better handle on techniques and product use. I understand that those two channels are run buy talented guys who take extremes in their craftsmanship, but the money and time you are spending on what seem like cheaper products and quick fixes really are not cheaper or quicker. There are fiberglass supply houses out there where you can buy the right products, for great prices, and you can ask the professionals there to help you select the right stuff. Best of luck and I gotta say you do a great job! when it comes to your enthusiasm.

trying to remain positive on this one, I will assume that you sanded down the seam to give the epoxy something to key into so, ideally you would fill the void to reduce future movement, sand through the gell coat and then feather the layup into the existing GRP before coating with a brushable gell coat to protect the lower layers. I would recommend sourcing a rubberised stip to go over this as it was stock on these boats for a reason (namely impact reduction on the weakest part of the construction of the hull). I would also say, once you get to Florida, stop haul out and have a survey done to give you a list of works, plan them out and estimate the materials you need, add 10% to what you think and order online from marine suppliers, price wise you will probably end up paying about what you are paying now but for that price, you will be able to get proper marine-grade materials that will last a lot longer. I once made the mistake of being cheap and painting in automotive paint on one of my boats only used in freshwater, it looked good at first but didn't last long at all.

I don't expect the epoxy to hold that seam for long without proper surface prep. Lot of flaking paint and gel coat cracks and such that should have been sanded down. I've seen a lot of shortcuts and have doubts on how long some of your repairs will last. I won't mention the flush cutting of the screws between the hulls. In case you're wondering, I've been involved rehabbing 2x 22' footers, a 73 Bristol 34' loaded with blisters and delaminations and currently working on a 70 Morgan 40'. The Bristol hull took 3 years of weekends. Just my personal experienced opinion. Too many boats on the bottom WITH their owners due to rushed/shoddy repairs and workmanship or inexperience with proper techniques.

Hey there guys i like watching and sure brings back very old memories. I have lots of fiberglass experience so Please dont glass over the gelcoat as youve done down the hull/deck seam. All of that needs to be re-glassed very well and properly done as its going to be under a lot more stress than you realize. Prep by grinding gel coat down to clean glass with 40 grit and it'll bond the best. and below the seam you have the space to get alot surface contact so do a good 6" strip of clean glass. Thats just for a start. Just want to see you with a strong boat in the end :) cheers

Wow you've got a lot of structural reinforcement to do before you can put a rig on that . A marine surveyor would condemn your vessel. I would look a getting a better project boat to start with. You can't deal with bad weather in a boat like that. Get a fixer upper mono hull maybe. I wish you all the best, 10 out 10 for effort.

Please don't use Bondo on a boat, especially near or under a water line, it won't hold. And I understand you're just trying to stop water intrusion, but some sealing tape would do that, if you fiberglass you have to have a proper surface to do it. You can use King Starboard over that joint(once properly repaired) as a rub rail that's better than wood, you just buy strips of it, router the center out, and then attach it using Marine adhesive and/or stainless bolts, after routering spots to countersink the heads. It works beautifully, and by using sections, can always replace one if necessary. Have heard of some using plastic decking material, but I never have. The ICW is no joke, and I hope you take steps to ensure it's at least safe..and get a marine radio, ask around for used units there for sale, or buy a handheld, also have extra flotation(including a raft, or lifeboat) and safety devices aboard before you leave. This isn't to be critical or mean, just don't want to see you get in trouble on your adventure. Peter Simpson not trying to bond it just make it water tight and 5200 is not for bonding fiberglass I would use thickened epoxy but not suppose to fiberglass that that is the split to separate the cap and hull that is why rub rail is there to block a lot of the water and marine silicon to make water tight jt🇺🇸🐟🎣🛥⛱🌴😊😃🙏🏻

Your friend who showed you how to use epoxy should NEVER instruct anyone ever again. 1. ALWAYS use gloves!!!!! 2. Use a respirator when using epoxy and sanding, unless you don't give a shit about your lungs. 3. Bondo is not appropriate for boats. You have epoxy, use it. 4. You don't spread epoxy with your gloved hands. Get a plastic scraper and you can cover the entire area evenly. Don't mix two different glue substances for the same piece of work. 5. Seal your hatches with butyl tape 6. On Amazon buy "Don Casey's Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual" Buy it now. Eliminate mistakes you're making and will make. Do it now before you screw up something that could have been eliminated.

How does sail vessel certification work in the US? Can you just "buy" it? In a later video, these guys got the registration, numbers placed and certification disk... without any rigging, nav station nothing! For some reason I think I can understand why so many US boats gets in trouble at sea! In this country, that boat would never see water! I know of a few boats here, with new rigging everything, and they stand on dry ground, dirt cheap, as just one tiny aspect failed certification!

You have to rebuild that sugar scoop, it's all rotted out and that 2nd step is a joke. That seam between the hull and the top of the boat is structural and needs to be done a lot better then you did. Sand, clean with acetone and use lots of fiberglass and EPOXY resin on that seam and see if you can align it a bit better. When you work on a boat you have to think of the long haul. It's a cute little catamaran.
