The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 18, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, Holden goes to a drug store after leaving the skate rink and has a Swiss cheese sandwich and a malted milk. He again thinks about calling Jane, but his mind wanders. He remembers getting jealous when he saw her once dancing with a boy that he thought was a show-off, but Jane disagreed and thought he had an inferiority complex. Holden arrogantly declares that that is just an excuse girls use to date arrogant boys. Finally, he makes the call, but there is no answer. He then calls a boy called Carl Luce, someone from the Whooton School, and he agrees to meet him for drinks later.
With time to kill, Holden goes to see a film at Radio City Music Hall. He finds the show ridiculous, but it reminds him how he and Allie used to love the kettledrum player in the Radio City orchestra. Holden sees the film, which he claims was boring as well. When it’s over he heads over to the bar to meet Luce.
