Top Secret maintenance tip: Those SRAM TT500 rear shifters often lose their indexing after 1,000 to 2,000 miles due to the internal springs wearing out. No need to replace the whole shifter. "SRAM TT500 spring kits" are available on eBay and after swapping out the 3 bent wire "springs", the shifters perform like new.

Graduated from 2 Single Visions, 1 Double Vision, and a Bob Jackson touring bike to a DuMont, February 2020. After much testing, fettling, and adjustments, finally on the road May 2020. Having been off bikes for approximately 5 years, this ride is superb!! Comfortable seat, and no more with the balance problem. The only problem with my Single Vision after years off, was starting up and wobbling all over, being a hazard to those around me. Now with the DuMont, no problem. Have put over 2,400 miles on it so far, and looking for many more. Haven't had need to use the folding feature, as my carrier is a Chrysler Pacifica, previosly a Dodge Caravan. Opening the rear "hatch", just pick up the complete bike and roll it in, lock one brake, and off we go. Congrats to Catrike for such a robust, well engineered. and tough "bike". I figure that if the fitness folk can call one of their machines a "recumbent bike", that the term "bike" should also be allowed to use for a trike. Cheers!

Thank you very much for the thorough treatment of this particular model. The most fantastic part of your video is in the very beginning of the video. You show how a folded Dumont can fit in the back of a compact Hyundai SUV. The TUCSON. Conveying this versatile aspect of a folding recumbent trike fitting in the back of a large number of SUV's is the wave of the future for sure.

Loved the video. My Dumont is 10 months old and I’m still learning. A few comments - When discussing the seat, you omitted the wallet sized pouch under the right side. Personally this is where I put my first aid kit. - Great demo on folding the Dumont. But you needed to add a few words on how to stow it in that SUV. I’ve damaged my bar end shifters not knowing that was going to be an issue. - Great discussion of adjustments. Really appreciated the links to customization options.

Lots of great information. I'm at 235#, so I like riding with 200 psi in the shock. As delivered my rear shock was cranked towards turtle (slow rebound). You need to show some great 60 & 100 mile routes that would be fun. Need to plan my next road trip, and stop in for a carbon fiber boom with a Slumpf Mountain drive fitted (tempted to go with a 1 x 12 system, but with a 60T up front so I can still climb those hills and have higher tops speed with spinning for fast! Keep the videos coming, signed a Dumont and 700 rider.

Please talk about how you lay a Catrike down in the folded position inside a car. On one side you rest the trike on the sram levers which is not good. On the other side the trike rests on the rear derailleur which is also not desirable.

Nice review! Two questions: Does the rear Shock have a Lockout? Will a 622 wheel x 28(tire)fit and still allow folding? (I own a 2018 700 with stock Zipp disc rear 622 wheel) thank you
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 года назад
That particular shock does not have a lockout. While one can be substituted it doesn't make any real difference on this trike as we have not noticed any squatting issues even while climbing. We recently built a Dumont-based Annihilator with 24in Front wheels and a 29er rear and it does fold.

I’m curious is there anyway to delete the air shock for a more traditional coil suspension? Because not everyone wants to deal with the pain of adjusting the air shock
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 года назад
For most people seeing the shock is a one-time thing, and we always ask for the rider weight so we can set the shock prior to shipping, so most people never have to worry about our. If you really didn't want the air shock there are some coil over shocks that can be retrofit.

Excellent in-depth video - thanks! Question: All the local bike shops where I live (grand total of 2), all say the recumbent are useless on hills (without motor assist), because of rider position, and can't take advantage of body weight. Is this truth or myth?
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 года назад
Using body weight to climb hills is poor form anyway, but because of the seat behind you most riders can actually push more than their body weight (think leg presses). We don't recommend that. Proper technique is to gear down and spin fast. The higher you can train yourself to keep your cadence the more endurance you'll have and the faster you'll be able to climb hills. An out-of-shape rider on a heavier trike is going to be slower than a lightweight diamond frame ridden by a fit cyclist, but with lighter trikes and matched riders you won't see that much of a difference.
@genephipps6421
@genephipps6421 4 года назад
@@UtahTrikesOnline You forgot the best part. The trike will usually decimate a regular cycle on the down hill sections do to the reduced frontal area and better aerodynamics.
@thomashughes_teh

I've ridden a Catrike Expedition and a BikeE semi-/recumbent with rear suspension and Cruzbike Front Wheel Drive 2 wheel recumbent dynamic boom with suspension. The recumbent trike does not get the arm pull and stair step weight shifting power transfer nearly as much as a diamond frame rider using all the cross country ski muscle sets. The BikeE gets a little more arm pull against torso weight transfer to the pedals if the effort is exerted. That's usually only good for a short burst. The Cruzbike is the most efficient recumbent against hills I am aware of. Ditto the flat ground,down slope, and tailwind advantages of the recumbent trike. The air resistance is about half and reduces fatigue over the entire course of a multi hour ride even in hills. I also like having a seat I can nap in after lunch. The front wheel only braking of my Catrike is dialed in tight as tight gets by the design and instilled confidence from the very first set of test ride pulls. What the uphills steal the other conditions steal back with interest on a energy spent per mile basis over non-recumbents. p.s. I have no connection to the Utah Trikes or other brands I mentioned. I choose recumbents for comfort and they deliver it.
@TomWalterTX
@TomWalterTX 4 года назад
Myth. DF (Diamond frame) cyclist will pass me going uphill. I'm heavier but still climbing. Best was passing DF's who had dismounted as it was a steep hill while I kept cranking in lowest gear (30T front; 36 rear on the Dumont) as I yelled "not that much more to the top). Downhill aerodynamics means I have an advantage. I averaged 15 mph on our last 75-mile ride, can sprint up to 20 mph (four miles). Friends who have been riding longer, on more reclined 700's averaged 20 mph on that ride. None of us have e-assist, just leg power! I have Parkinson's but have recommended e-assist friends as they worry about getting 20 miles into a 40-mile ride and worry about energy to get home. If you ride three times a week, each Saturday adding about 10% in duration they would be doing 50-mile rides with ease after a few months.
@eclecticneophyte2581
@eclecticneophyte2581 4 года назад
I've never ridden a recumbent of any sort, and I don't know anyone locally that has one. So this is all great feedback. I'm recently retired and looking at alternatives. Thanks to lower back issues I can no longer tolerate distance rides on a traditional designed diamond frame bike. But I can comfortably 'ride' the recumbent stationary at the health club, thus my interest in the tadpole trike. There are just enough hills where I live, that I felt it wise to ask... :)

There is a safety issue with recumbents. Being low to the ground they are difficult for drivers, especially truck and bus drivers, to see. The silly little flags that you can buy give only an illusion of safety - in many situations they are largely invisible. An upright cyclist with any sense wears a bright yellow high-visibility jacket on public roads, but this doesn't work with recumbents - the seat back gets in the way. There have been some nasty accidents. Manufacturers need to get to grips with this issue . . .

A recumbent trike requires elevated defensive driving. You have to be more aware of your immediate surroundings. It's best to avoid parking lots if you can and stick to designated trails. Visibility is only a problem when there is something taller between you and a car, like a hedge or a parked car. Aside from that they are every bit as visible (and maybe even more so) than a regular bike. I agree that a flag is probably not sufficient, you have to avoid putting yourself those situations in the first place. The one advantage an upright bike has is if you DO get hit by a car, you're more likely to end up going over the hood. Not so much with a trike. But that, again, is up to a rider paying attention to their surroundings, which is true of any pedestrians form of transportation. The bottom line is you have to be strategic in where and how you ride the trike. If you come to a situation where you can't see what's coming, then what's coming can't see you and you need to proceed with caution.
