Ceridwen, the 'Keeper of the Cauldron'
One of many sacred vessels in Celtic mythology, folklore and story.
The sacred brew of Ceridwen bestows the drinker with knowing the unknowable. The fruits of hidden knowledge. All Science, and all Art. All futures, and all past. Inspiration, creativity, knowledge.
And the power of transformation.
Only, the first three drops mind, the rest is pure poison.
This story, from the Mabinogion, possibly illustrates a belief in rebirth or reincarnation among Celtic cultures. As well as perhaps providing some of the basis for later legends of the Holy Grail, among other stories of grails, wells and fountains in British and Irish mythology.

My student brought me here. He has lost his mythology book about Taliesin, and after I asked him who Taliesin is, I was so intrigued and searched the internet to know more about the story. Thank you for telling us the story so passionately! 🙏❤

if you read Taliesin's greatest work, the Battle of the Trees, you get an interesting elaboration on the concepts within the story. Not just transformation between animals, but energy and matter.

IN the legends of Ireland it similar to the Salmon of Knowledge .. once Fionn Ma Cool he accidently put his tumb after the salmon blistered ..and he knew all knowlege .. UP the Welsh and Irish Ta go Halann ma Chara :)
@TheStoryCrow
@TheStoryCrow Год назад
I love that version. There’s something inherently comic about the Hazelnut of Knowledge the Salmon eats. I think the Irish have a knack of weaving both Pathos and comedy into the same Mythic yarn. Also. This sort of story, as far as I know, only exists in Britain and Ireland. Amazing. Sometimes you find Celtic Myths resonating in Ancient Greece and India - but not this story. It seems to be unique to these Islands. Man. I love folklore 😅

I wonder why Gwyon stayed a kernel of wheat all the while Ceridwen the Chicken was pecking? Why didn't he turn into a Wolf and eat the Chicken?
@TheStoryCrow
@TheStoryCrow Месяц назад
Thinking out loud here, but perhaps in the same way that in a dream, you can’t control the dream shifts and moves, until you learn to become lucid and control it. Gwion has not fully mastered his powers yet. He is not yet Taliesin.
@HootOwl513
@HootOwl513 Месяц назад
@@TheStoryCrow Good point, there'd be no story -- no Taliesin. Also, a slave all his life, he wasn't used to free thought. T H White calls it a Wizards' Duel when two higher magic users use shapeshifting to best each other. Gwion is no adept, Ceridwen is. To his Wolf, She'd become a Bear. To his Grizzly Bear, she'd become a Dragon and roast him. Story over.

@TheStoryCrow
@TheStoryCrow 3 месяца назад
Yes, in some texts there’s the suggestion that they have ‘been’ each other, in the sense of an endlessly re-incarnating ‘divine child’ which may give a glimpse into Druidic metaphysics - but it’s hard to say. They’re certainly similar figures in many ways

im 4+ years into a gender transition and most nights i clutch a bag of 3 crystals and say stuff to Ceridwen, also some days like today i throw birdseed to the birds & squirrels and say Ceridwen's name & somtimes say a request. i mightve been saying her name wrong tho, up until now i was sayin it with a soft "c" but you seem to say it with a hard "C". mayb ill do that from now on **edit:** ur a good storyteller btw good job i like the editing

This is not the true story of Taliesin. It was not a prince alone by the salmon weir, but instead a poor man and his wife longing for a child, also, Taliesin was the greatest bard to have lived because he could control the weather- elements. I may retell this story as should be told here in the near future.
@TheStoryCrow
@TheStoryCrow 5 месяцев назад
This comment made me laugh 😆 Yes I know that version. Couldn’t say whether it’s the ‘true’ version or not. I’d say there’s as many versions of Taliesin stories as there are storytellers. How many of them are true to the historical Taliesin is unknowable. I’d say the story is much older, or elements of it. Feel free to post a link to your version of the story here when and if you chose to share it 👍

Whatever happened to Morfran, poor dude. I like that Ceridwen is morally ambiguous. She is murderous but also possesses the best qualities of a loving mom. Is there any connection with the name Kelly (Kali, Cailleach). I believe the Gaelic spelling of Kelly is Ceallach or Cealleigh. Maybe just wishful thinking lol.
@TheStoryCrow
@TheStoryCrow Год назад
That old sea crow ends up in the court of King Arthur according to some Mythological yarns. Yes I like that too, sometimes people focus on the positive / negative with Ceridwen. She’s more ambiguous in this story. Kelly is a girls name in the US right? In Britain and Ireland it is a Celtic name, but usually for a boy. But I think it means white or of the woods. So would tie in with the etymology of Ceridwen which also means white, and she lives in the woods 😀🌳😅 Kali and cailleach mean dark / obscured and hooded respectively so feels like it goes in the other direction, but there is a lot of ambiguity with etymology too so who knows! Thanks for watching. Ceridwen and the calleach do feel related as ambiguous mother / crone / virgin goddess / witch images …
@kellysharon5815
@kellysharon5815 Год назад
Yes in US most Kellys are women but also some men. I’m going to choose to continue to entertain the notion that my name has some connection to these powerful women 😊 On my walk this morning I was thinking how Ceridwen is like a mother grizzly - fierce but loving & will rip you to shreds if you mess with her cubs. I like how this aspect aligns her closely to the natural world and outside of the confines of civilized society. I also love the archetypal Mosesy baby in the river. I get really excited when I find these common threads in different mythologies. Thanks so much for doing what you do. I’m so happy to have found this channel. This stuff is my jam.
