It's wild that someone on the internet as much as she probably is doesn't even understand how the internet even works. These people are fucking nuts and they just wanna do something performative for the sake of content

Or talking about it. Idk how to get my phone or my TV to stop listening to me. I'll have a conversation with my fiance & then we'll get ads pertaining to what we were talking about. I'm like wtf I didn't even look it up. So now when I'm at other people's house I make sure to whisper some crazy stuff into their alexas & hope they get some wild ads.

Sure, block dumb accounts. That could be nice. But the people pushing this big movement are saying these specific celebrity names more than I've heard them in years!

Yet they're still watching movies, streaming shows and listening to music. What the hell does blocking them on social media do?

I can agree that celebrity worship can definitely go too far, but I also think that liking a famous person is fine. I think often times people conflate over the top celebrity culture with content they just don't like. I don't really follow many celebrities closely but there are RU-vidrs whose content I follow pretty closely. There are authors whose books I will always read. There are actors that I have a certain level of nostalgia when I see them on screen because they were in childhood favorite movies. If someone is causing you stress by all means block them! But I don't really think these blocking campaigns are really changing anyone's quality of life.

I'm palestinean and I think it is doing something. 1. Awareness. 2. A small dent in celebritie's wealth, but most importantly their ego. 3. Satisfying af. 4. Making a statement that might get the attention of these celebrities, which it did btw, lizzo is sharing gofundme's for example. 5. Many marketing professionals said this does make a difference when it comes to targeting their audience for selling products they endorse

yep, i was on the fence at first (thought it was harmless) but was set straight by reading posts by palestinian activists. can't imagine how irritated i would be if i were them, it's super frivolous and they don't have the luxury of wasting time. even as someone outside of palestine this stuff pisses me off a little now, i've seen more death in the past few months than i ever have in my life. and people are still just focused on celebrities and what THEY make of all this.

If she chose to speak up and use her platform, it would literally shift hundreds of millions of people's views on the issue. Hence getting more support. Hence getting more donations. Hence increasing activism in the right direction. Not to mention it is the right thing to do as a public figure. Tiktokers have changed so many people's views and raised awareness by being vocal on this issue while they have less than a fraction of influence/followers than these miserable celebrities do. So blocking them *will* bruise their ego. They cannot go to the met gala during current world events and get away with it without consequences. It is the *least* we can do and does not take much time. Also, if you don't have the money to donate constantly or cannot physically go to gaza to help out or do not have a platform to spread awareness or the time to protest on college campuses, what is there left to do? People already feel helpless so telling them this doesn't make any difference while it does, is the harmful part.

From my perspective, if they are small enough creators/celebs to be successfully starved out by an online boycott such as this, they most likely weren't in the financial or social place to make the difference people are claiming they would. Also if they feel pressured to take a stand but have misinformation or not enough education, that heightens the chance for them to choose Israel in a misguided attempt to do "the right thing"

Do you know why they have to raise money? Because of terrible mismanagement and wastefulness on a grand scale. That's hardly something most normal people would chose to use their money on. It's nothing but a publicity opportunity for these celebrities. They could've just donated and not gone along and avoided the scrutiny, but they chose to attend. That seems like a big middle finger to those who actually care about the state of the world and not just their own optics.

@@leeprew Normal people can just visit the museum. The point of the Gala is to encourage those with money to support a museum and the arts. The fashion show element part encourages celebrities to donate, but more importantly to highlight up and coming clothing designers and show some of the costumes in the museum. If you don't like the event or find it a bit gauche, that's fine and your prerogative, but the point isn't a sinister venture. It's just a yearly art museum fundraising dinner with a fashion showcase. Should they also donate to other humanitarian causes? Yes! But these aren't really related things.

It looks bad from the outside given what is happening. Didn't help with the theme they chose. If anything is depicts celebrities as living in a different reality than the rest of us do and that's true in a way

Blocking is meant to remove random unknowns or regular people in one's life for whatever reason. Blocking public figures is so redundant because the public figure never knew any of their followers personally, doesn't make money solely from followers, and it mostly just reinforces the same celebrity obsession since people are still tuning in to celebs after blocking them. When we boycott as an organized thing, it's to force concession from the public figure, not to try to erase the public figure (since normal, productive protestors know that's pretty unrealistic). Change is incremental.

Actually boycotting their product output is a more worthy goal, but you don't need to block them to do that. The focus on the act of blocking (something they don't see, as far as I'm aware" seems to be more about a personal sense of smugness to mark that you don't care about them.

Even if this movement was well-organized with very specific goals in mind it would be extremely ineffective. Getting a celebrity to talk about Palestine doesn't benefit anybody, this is a major ongoing international news story that everyone knows about and is actually difficult to avoid. It's not some Niche issue that needs the attention of Taylor Swift, it's not like she has the ability to stop the nation of Israel from doing a genocide.

The miss Americana doc I think was intended to highlight how controlled not just Taylor Swift, but celebs in general are. They aren’t solely in control. Like any business there are investors and such who are very concerned about avoiding controversy and continuing to make money. Unfortunately, being pro Palestine isn’t the dominant position in the US right now, so they see risk, and aren’t going to let the celebs say anything

Fingers crossed that it sticks. There's plenty of genuine good reasons why it's just good for people to distance themselves from mainstream celebrity media, but the vids shown here make me wonder if, when this hype dies down a bit, most of the people who participated are just gonna go "wait why did i do this again???" because they weren't given/didn't give themselves any substantial reasons or goals for it and will just bounce back to where they were before. If they don't, though, and this just becomes the norm, then net positive imo.

It also affects the effectiveness of brands they sponsor to target their audience, making it harder for brands to sell their product. Brands do not want someone who has minimal following counts to sell their product, or cannot find a way to reach their audience. How do you think tiktokers and influences get their money? Usually follower count and brand deals/sponsorships. If there is no audience to target, why invest in that person to sell your product anymore?

It's not helpful because I can guarantee that the vast majority of people aren't blocking celebrities that they actively support or interact with, so at the most, it's temporarily driving engagement with these celebrities (even if it's just to visit their pages or search for their names in order to block them), and then after that - nothing. People will continue to see the movies, or watch the shows, or listen to the music, or go to the games of the celebrities that they like, and continue to not interact with the celebrities that they don't like. This isn't like the fan base of a major celebrity pulling back all of their financial support until said celebrity does "x, y, z." It's just a bunch of people blocking their least favorite celebrities on a handful of social media sites.

If some people decide to block the celebrities they don't like or do not care to interact with, there's really nothing you can do to force people to block all celebs. There are calls to boycott their movies, their shows and their music, even their brands, so no people who are taking this movement seriously are going the full 9 yards, they're protesting everything these celebs are 'creating'.. if Taylor swift who is known to have a cult of a following who quite literally worship her lost 100k followers in less than a week, no one is safe. People are angry, they want change, they want accountability. That's the thing, many people do not understand this movement enough and sorry but most of the people who say "this doesn't work" do not understand what a boycott is. Then why is the BDS movement so popular? If you can boycott companies and brands and they are losing profit now, then why not people?
