The Olsen twins is an interesting example of celeb privacy because they were really famous really young. I can completely understand overcorrecting to being really private after a childhood in the spotlight.

This is just a reminder that you can move and shift your boundaries whenever you need to. Even you, person who isnt famous. Don't let anyone dictate what you can be comfortable with

I have been a working model for about 15 years in a runway model for about eight. I can tell you that many of the professional models were/are getting less work because more designers are giving them to influencers because they want that social media clout. Not only do many influencers often not have a proper catwalk, but they are often very late, sometimes rude and don't have the basic good etiquette of understanding that your job is to model clothes and not necessarily to look pretty. .. which may mean that you may get a hairstyle or a makeup or clothes that you think may not be flattering to you. But the most frustrating part about it is that behavior would never fly for a professional model. A producer or designer would tell you to leave and you'd never be booked again. But the designers would let these influencers act like this because they didn't want the influencers to publicly talk about someone reprimanding them on social media... But still talk badly about the influencers behavior when they weren't around.. but NEVER to the influencers face. I personally watch this one influencer (who I will not name) rummage through the clothes for the show, and put on outfit. When the designer asked why she was wearing that outfit that was meant for somebody else. She told him she picked it because it was the color better suited her. .... It was a tussel because the outfits are picked out and fitted for each model in advance... I watched another influencer, redo her makeup in a style she thought made her look more pretty instead of going with the established design the MUAs were given for the theme. As a working model it is very difficult to see this, because there is a lot of training that goes into walking properly at the runway and it does get very frustrating to be turned down for work because you are blatantly told that you're 3,000 followers makes you less valuable than the person with no runway skills that has hundreds of thousands.

I think some celebrities follow 0 people because so many stans track who their faves are following and freak out if they suddenly follow or unfollow someone. It might be a way of keeping their connections close to their chest

These tik tokers making fun of those celebrities for no reason but acting like a fans infront of them.

People are so used to everything being shown on the internet. Forgetting they are not entitled to see everything going on so once there is the privacy boundary people start to freak.

Imagine thinking Austin Butler is pretentious for liking a popular, critically claimed cowboy western movie as a child. It's like people forget that the guy grew up in the film industry and regularly watched a plethora of movies with his family. Mind you, when they say "as a child," maybe he was talking about his favourite movie as a 12 year old, and a lot of 12 year olds would not say Toy Story. Like you mentioned in this video, I think it has to do a lot with resentment and envy. People think, "How dare this man think he's superior to me because he engages with art that I find challenging/different instead of consuming easily accessible art?!" when in reality, Austin is not assuming anything and is probably just saying his favourite movie. Nothing wrong with more easily accessible art, but if someone doesn't prefer it, they'll immediately get labelled as "pretentious" and "elitist". My nephew is 15 years old and his favourite movie is a Tarkovsky movie - is he "pretentious" or just an avid cinephile that likes to explore diverse genres? The rise in anti-intellectualism, assumptions, envy, etc, is saddening.

Attending a Waldorf school from kindergarten through senior year of high school was truly wild. Because of the almost total ban on screens, I feel like I missed out on a lot of the pre 2012 internet. When I was finally allowed online, I spent almost all of my time glued to my computer. A little screen time is good, but a total ban can lead to becoming easily addicted when restrictions get lifted

I think the celebrity vs influencer thing also has something to do with how people perceive celebrities as talented, hard-working individuals who earned their fame and status and so therefore earn their place in these fashion shows, etc. compared to influencers whom people perceive as getting famous quickly over some lucky viral moment and therefore are not deserving of everything that comes with that fame.

Your last point on Emma Chamberlain reminds me of what happened with Ashley from bestdressed. She stopped posting on YT for her own reasons and many of her fans were upset she never explained why.

As someone who’s given up on all forms of social media since January 2023 (except for RU-vid and Letterboxd) I’ve been able to value the privilege of my privacy without being glued to what other people are doing. When Mina was talking about tech discrepancy in schools, I think that is unfortunately SO TRUE. I worked in an urban school as a teacher and had to put the kids on city/state computer programs daily to “provide instruction” and was encouraged to use the smart-board and computers every opportunity I could. The kids then went home and went on their personal devices, especially kids who were not in afterschool activities and whose families were working. I seriously got concerned by how much screen addiction there is

I don’t know much about fashion shows but personally I don’t see why banning phones or taking photos/videos should be a problem. It’s just like how taking pictures/videos is forbidden at theater and ballet performances or classic orchestra concerts.

I think it's hilarious that the row banned cellphones and its a stroke of marketing genius. Their brand is classic, subdued, and exclusive. That is the best marketing strategy for their quiet luxury brand. Also they get enough buzz on social media given the fact that literally every celebrity wears them in their Vogue 7 days 7 outfits videos. The Olsen twins know what they are doing and considering they came from child stardom... I'm here for it. This won't kill the access influencers and social media have to other brands.

So many thoughts… as a mid 20’s artist living in New York who grew up during the rise of social media and has experienced the exponential rise of self marketing via that platform- thoughts of privacy and needing to use my phone constantly come up a lot for me. Lately I’ve been realizing that using social media has not only become an intense time waster and dopamine vampire, but also has dulled my inner voice to the point I ask myself “am I making this because I like this or do I like it because I saw it on instagram?”. I think artists- and everyone- have suffered a huge impact in our ability to create from an authentic place because I don’t think the human mind actually can process how many lives and ideas and products and art that we’re exposed to all day and night. It is very important to be able to recognize when you need outside influence, and when you don’t. And those times In life change and constantly have their own effects- but as a society we have lost that right to choose when. Yeahhhhh it’s really sad too cause I WANT TO THROW MY PHONE IN THE RIVER BUT I NEED IT TO MARKET MYSELF AND COMMUNICATE IN ORDER TO PAY MY RENT. Ahhhh

I really liked that quote about artists "needing" to skillfully package themselves as products for buyers to consume now. I've become quite disillusioned with so many parts of social media feeling like Ads- constantly trying to make me do or want or be something different... to create a feeling of lack that was never there in the first place.

I watch another RU-vidr who says we aren't there to experience first. We know it all secondhand. We read reviews before we get it, we hear about it before we try, we read a person's profile before we meet them. The curation of the image or profile is what matters today. You see it too but from the two angles influencer and quiet celebrity.

I am not famous or a model or in the fashion industry or even a content creator, but when I went on my social media hiatus and quit everything entirely, every time I admitted to being 'offline' to someone they would act shocked or 'wowed' by my decision. It's kinda wild that getting off social media is treated like this huge act as though I ran a marathon or started a charity. It really shows how everyone is so glued to their devices.

On the topic of famous people getting access without deserving it. I work in animation in a high role, and it's a tough pill to swallow that I can work on a movie for years. Produce hundreds of integral artworks for the film, and make only a tiny fraction of what a voice actor on the film makes for a few days of work. I still have to hustle and worry if I'll be able to afford a safe and healthy life for my kid. And when the film is announced, most anyone talks about is the main voice actor. All the power is the advertising.

I’m glad you touched on the Rachel Zelegar/Snow White comments. It’s been bothering me that she received such a massive backlash for expressing her opinions on the source material, yet people praised Dakota Johnson for her not so subtle dislike of Madam Web, as well as Robert Patterson for his distain towards Twilight. I feel like people just latch onto whatever narrative is being pushed through ‘news’ outlets. They most likely just choose the reporting angle that will receive the most clicks and roll with it.

The thing that has stopped me from having an online shop to sell my art is everything besides making the art. I'm good at what I do. I am not good at social media. I am not good at advertising myself. I am not good at finances. I am not good at dealing with people. Heck I'm not even good at taking pictures. There a way too many skills I'd have to learn because I cannot afford help, and honestly, I don't think I'm capable of learning all those skills.

If I ever saw a commercial for Rolls Royce - it would immediately tarnish their image to me. It would no longer hold it's elite status. I feel like this could translate to Row fashion show. I had to take back my privacy for my mental health. I (in my late teens/early 20s) used to over share every little detail. Now I (in my early 30s) haven't posted on ig in almost a year, I never post anything personal on other sns (going on like 5 years), and the only reason I keep my phone on me is to respond to msgs and obvious safety concerns. My screen time is spent watching RU-vid and streaming (because much to the chagrin of a few of my friends, I haven't opened tiktok in months). Eventually the feeling of fomo leaves and you're much more peaceful with missing the trends or the memes. So if you're a regular person, not even an influencer or a celebrity, and you've been thinking about detoxing those things from your life, just do it.

I think The Row banning cell phones is really simple. Ashley’s baby was probably there and she simply didn’t want any pictures taken of her child. And maybe didn’t want people commenting on her post baby body. Their are curated images of the collection available for review. Let’s all remember, fashion shows existed before cell phones. Those fashion critic pioneers had to use their memory and take detailed notes. Why can’t todays critics?

Wow you hit the nail on the head when you talked about chat spaces back in the day and only being accessible to messages when you decided to log on or when you have the head space to deal with it. These days….There are some who expect you to respond almost immediately to texts and emails. It’s like you don’t have the opportunity to log off anymore.

When people complain about celebrities (and influencers, to an extent) "trying too hard" in media and advertising their aforementioned media, I think a key thing some forget is that these people are WORKING. That is their JOB. People approach their work in multiple different ways, and no one has the same working style, but if I had a financially-stable job that fulfilled me every day and made me excited to live, I'd be trying hard too, because I would be genuinely HAPPY and therefore would have more of an incentive to put my best--and most positive--foot forward.

These interviewers are often asking cinephiles these questions… and a lot of cinephiles consume film in a very different way and from a young age. Hence why they are ‘cinephiles’. Plus that move Butler mentions isn’t exactly pretentious, it’s just old. Maybe if he mentioned some obscure Japanese art house film I’d be like “yeah okay there bud.” But that was a blockbuster at the time and is on Turner Classics all the time. It’s so silly 😂

As you kept talking I realized this is a very “living in a global superpower”/first-second world conversation, especially re: “it’s a privilege to not be an iPad baby and connect with your family”. Poor kids in third world countries are not experiencing this iPad baby pandemic, they do connect with their families even though their families often work insane hours bc of the high need for labor in countries that are only partially industrialized; I’m saying this as a third culture kid originally from one of these countries. I think there is something about American culture that contributes to this as well.

I don't know enough about this topic to put my thoughts together in an eloquent way, but I think we're seeing something similar happening with the internet like we saw/are seeing with fast fashion and fast food. It's all about instant gratification, and celebrities can't always provide something 'instantly' because they're working on durational products. TikTokers/influencers on the other hand have the "luxury" of being able to make things as and when they want (for the most part). And I think as with all things we're now on the downward curve where we've had too much 'fast internet' and are creeping back towards 'traditional internet'. I truly have no idea if that made any sense lmao

Kyle McClaughlin is super active on instagram, always posting birthday posts for his old costars and sharing fan art that he gets tagged in. It's not a exactly a window into his private life but he definitely stays humble by keeping up with the fans and you can tell he appreciates his cult following and just eats it up. I think that's part of why he was invited to walk in the runway show, not because he's so private that it's intriguing for him to be included but because of his internet cult status as the GOAT humble actor who picks tasteful roles. It was bound to create the right kind of buzz and it did! He killed it

I fully support The Row's ban on phones. I think it's so annoying when on special events you have professional photographers and videographers who want to fully capture everything, just to have annoying influencers and amateurs pushing their stupid phones right in front of their camera, thus ruining great shots. Or having extra work in postproduction to remove phones from shots.

Quiet fashion and privacy feels not only "classier" but also morally superior? Like the act of showing off is socially look down upon but if the means by which the money was obtained is not morally superior then nothing changes just because it's hidden. People got angry during pandemic times with celebrities showing off their mansions when the rest of us locked down in our little houses. But if they didn't film it that wouldn't make the world less unequal.

Another thing about celebrities not following anyone is because a follow on social media has been conflated to also represent an endorsement. A lot of “normal people” will of course follow the people who are - for example - the people who unfortunately lead their country, just to hear everything straight from the source, regardless of whether or not one agrees with them. Politics aside, a great example of this is Taylor Swift. After facing relentless, baseless, and extremely sexist media scrutiny in 2016, she went radio silent on her social media until she came back with the blockbuster reputation. Since then she has not followed a single person on social media, because otherwise there would be headlines speculating: “Taylor Swift unfollows XYZ on Instagram! Is there bad blood?” Or vice versa: “Taylor Swift follows XYZ on Instagram! She’s not innocent!”. I think this sort of ties in to what Emma Chamberlain was about not being able to control your own narrative. Ironic, considering most people use social media to reach exactly that goal of control and persona…

I also think the ability to decide when you are online and offline on instant messaging is beautiful, can't we just bring that back?

Kinda feels like the same argument as old money vs. new money where the aristocracy and royalty were/are threatened by the newly minted upper class and I can totally see how some in the fashion space would see these 'influencers' as some how cheaper for how they came up and gained access to the same spaces as them. Some prestige banks on what they have access to vs. what the 'peasants' have access to.

My observation from people who have gone low to no posting after making their careers from YT is there's very much a sense of "oh, so you think you're too good for us now???". Absolutely some do fall under that category - Drew Gooden's video on Lily Singhs really captures this, but also, no one is required to keep their job forever. The amount of people who start YT as literal teenagers who eventually start doing other things, it's such a weird take that they have to continue (forever I guess?) vlogging their life.

Also, on the note of privacy, I do think especially in the US that people should take their data security more seriously. It’s interesting how in the 90s the internet was known for its anonymity, and now it is impossible to use completely anonymously. There is a growing need to be seen - and to experience the exclusive that seems at odds. (I also think in certain contexts, gatekeeping is not a bad word. Many marginalized communities use gatekeeping as a function to protect and preserve their cultures)

To me the "actors known for their villan roles walking the runaway in suits like those iconic villains" worked because they did that well. When many times influencers are trying to walk like models and they are bad at it. If the elder gentleman would have tried to walk like hunky young male models it would have looked silly too.

An ex and I looked into Montessori of the Penn for his daughter, and loved it, but the cost…ouch. The kid’s mom wouldn’t agree, and a judge, who ended up being personal friends with her attorney, agreed to let the mom homeschool instead, which she didn’t do. Queue up a bunch of drama. I really don’t think we can fairly say that it’s a privilege to not be online. Kicking back outside with a book is free. Radios still exist (though I think that counting time on Apple Music or Spotify counts as screen time when a radio doesn’t). There are a lot of no-screen options that are free. As someone who has been homeless, having a place to reliably charge devices is a luxury.

I think what you said about gated communities and public spaces was so interesting! It's as if physical spaces, beauty and nature are finite resources that could disappear if too many ppl take part in it, and/or becomes "dirty" if The Poors and The Commoners come too close to it. I live in Sweden where we have "freedom to roam"/"everyman's right" (allemansrätten) and legal "protection of beaches" which basically means that, with some exceptions, everyone has the right to spend time in nature. While Sweden still has, like, gentrification, rich ppl and gated communities and the problems those things bring, I think that those legal rights have meant a lot for how accessible privacy & nature is to ppl in general. While rich ppl ofc still want to have their own spaces, I think most of them also see the benefit in publicly available natural areas, bc they enjoy them too. Nature & the experience of it, when maintained, isn't a finite resource, and it can be "used" by everyone as long as it's maintained and cared for. The system here and the fact that it has worked forever shows that.

16:50 As someone who has lived their whole life in a gated community, there is some missconception about them and other nuances that get left out. At least in Chile, the country where I live, gated communities are not a thing of luxury but rather a thing about safety. Gated communities are often for middle class people to keep things like robberies and assaults away and don't have the luxuries mentioned in the video. There are of course those where rich people live, but those are the expections. In fact, the richest (like important politicians such as the president or celebrities) often don't live in gated communities, but in houses open to the streets (with a metal fence of course, but every single person has a gate outside of their house, even some in gated communities.)

I think one of the reasons why some celebs don't follow anyone is if there is a falling out on any of their friends it's not as public or if anyone they follow did a crime or is being called out by the whole internet, they probably wouldn't want to be associated with them.

Gary Oldman had to relearn his original accent one time, too. It's not that unusual. a lot of talented actors are absorbent. Film sets are immersive, high pressure and crazy, man. U get in a zone. And if you're fluid enough to be a super good actor, your fluids can get congealed into certain shapes and stuff.

Saying 0 followers is a way to show that celebrities don't use Instagram is a leap. I agree with a lot of this code but I can understand why someone doesn't want feeds. I have been trying to unfollow a lot of pages I used to follow in the 2010s because -some pages are dead , -some brand accounts with problematic marketing using unrealsitic body images - triggering content, pages that I now realise could be polarising or ignorant, -tabloids that I have grown out of or want to stop wasting time on. Over all, I'm trying to reduce my screen time and maybe be more thoughtful as a consumer of the content I am exposed to and I am not a popular person but I can see why someone could want 0 followers. Another reason I see is ,I also remember following pages because my favourite celebs followed them and that can cause an indirect affiliation. Its not the worst thing to be conscious of the possible issues with giving some pages visibility without really knowing their intentions, business model and ethics when you are in the public eye.

This isn't really related to the video (which I really enjoyed by the way) but I felt the need to say that your tone of voice and presence is very engaging. I'm usually the person who skips around videos or puts them on 2x speed because I'm impatient but I was really invested in this. It was educational, entertaining and had me forming opinions on things I hadn't thought of before. Thank you for your video Mina and I think I'll watch more of them. Also, in response to the video I do feel like a lot of the resentment influencers receive is out of jealousy. Influencers are in a weird spot where they need to be relateable enough to reach and attract people while being "unique" enough to stand out and actually influence. When they get invited to events they're seen as regular people who have no skill or necessity to be there. I think people tend to want that for themselves and hate on influencers whilst disregarding other skills like networking and being business aware go into these things. Celebrities are given more grace as usually they're less accessible. It's because of their talent and their passion or they've been in the industry for years etc. People don't relate to celebrities as much and so can view them as "special" unlike influencers who are deemed I guess "less special". Anyways, I think it's interesting to see how this topic will evolve as you have some celebrities like Beyonce, Cillian Murphy, that one guy from the vampire diaries whose name I forgot etc, who stay offline and are praised for it. But on the other hand many celebrities are developing cult followings through interacting with fans directly. The line between celebrity and influencer is becoming more blurred as parasocial relationships become more and more normalised. Sorry for the rambling, I just found this quite interesting even though, the fashion stuff is kind of new to me. Thanks again for such a great video!!

I must say on one hand i do like when my favorite celeb communicate with us sharing their daily thoughts, hobbies so we can relate to them but also when it gets too much it just loses that aura and charisma

Idk, there are a lot of nonfamous non influencer, etc., people who are not large presences online. My uncle is a prominent medical researcher and practitioner in our area, which itself is a major hub for medical and tech development and he's the most offline person. I have my phone but if I leave it at home one day, I know that literally everyone else around me pretty much has one, I'll have one at work, and then I can always message via email etc., and the rest is out of my control and that's fine. I wasn't raised at a Waldorf school but in a mid-tech family where usage was moderated and I come from families of mostly poor, working-class immigrants. I don't think being private and being offline for nonfamous/nonelites is a sign of snobbery or necessarily class divide (plenty of people richer than me are addicted to their devices and online presence). It's just about prioritization. Did your family prioritize face-to-face or not? Did they instill boundaries and emphasize strong executive functioning skills and supports or not?

Ooo. I hadn't made that connection that with web 1.0 we didn't get msgs until we got online. And that really is a big part of the difference in vibes. I really miss those old forum days... Like there were interpersonal issues, yeah, aren't there always, but algorithms seem to do nothing but amplify those social issues whereas I feel like we used to tackle them and then they were dealt with until someone else acted up again.

Even fashion editors can get off their high horse. It's not a "right" to have your phone to make your job easier, any more than it's your right to be invited to a fashion show. I fully support any artist or designer not "democratizing" their products. The runway to shein pipeline relies on social media.

when you mentioned the struggle of artists that have to be online to be able to sell/be known, it hit hard, I myself do a lot of stuff including crochet and jewerly and stuff and i love doing them but its so hard when its the time to make tedious reels and follow the trend of the week just so people can see your art.

This is making me recognize like the privilege to privacy is also related to just the privilege of time and choice when you don’t have to worrying about survival with your money like and how capitalism effects our relationships like it was never the phones it’s the fact that our system doesn’t make time for children or just going with the flow like and they wonder why younger generations don’t wanna have kids and why we have the issues with our younger generations that we have now

I think how fast you are in taking notes on different mediums is dependend on a) what you are used too b) how you take notes (for people not thinking in words or sentences it may be easier to use a notebook as they are not limited to letters, numbers and emojis) Edit: Your little giggle when mentioning Cilian Murphy is just so cute!
