Today, there are more people in the world who play League of Legends than there are people who live in France. We wanted to look inside this rapidly expanding world of competitive gaming, so VICE host Matt Shea flew to South Korea, a country Esports can either make you rich and famous or land you in rehab.

Caleb Blodgett You know, I think you're right. An outsider looking in. Works well for the people that are new to/have no idea about the scene. However it alienates people like myself and others who have been watching esports for many years. Although I am more of a CSGO fan than LOL
@lkjina
@lkjina 9 лет назад
Caleb Blodgett I reckon they did of a poor job of properly displaying an outsiders perspective by only showing a singular side to esports, and that is LoL and Korean esports.
@crumbusto6885
@crumbusto6885 9 лет назад
Caleb Blodgett I agree completely. This thing just reeked of judgement, pretentiousness, insecurity, and general bad vibes. People who aren't into gaming still view it like it has this stigma from the 80's, that everyone who games is some cafe-dwelling mama's basement living fatass anti-social ghost who's never run more than ten feet. It just isn't true anymore. Most of the people who are a fan of these teams don't sit around playing for 18 hours per day. They're just regular people. The documentary went out of it's way to shine a light on the weirdest and most outlandish aspects and people of the gamer culture, because that's what gets views.

I don't think the thing that makes this Vice guy annoying is that he's new to the whole scene/doesn't know what's going on within esports. The annoying thing is that his attitude is super elitist towards the people and the hobby because he's cooler than all of the people involved. For the most part, Vice videos have interviewers involved that are openminded to the situations they are getting into. This guy does not feel that way at all. He has that same vibe of you're a nerd, I'm not, so I'm better than you, and that's the worst kind of person to have do this type of documentary on.
@pintobean6092
@pintobean6092 9 лет назад
+Antonio Campos I absolutely agree with this. I feel like most of the time, the people chosen for Vice videos to do interviews are actually interested in the topic at hand, or have some sort of prior knowledge.

I don't understand why they let this guy cover this topic. He clearly knows next to nothing about the subject, has done little research, doesn't seem to make any genuine attempts to try and learn from a gamer's perspective and basically just tries to create a negative attitude towards gaming. Half the video isn't even about esports with focus on cosplaying and how games aren't as fun as other things like the 10 minute segment on clubbing. This wasn't really an insight into competitive gaming, rather it was more of a guy giving his opinion from an outside perspective and mostly just bashing on gaming culture

saffatlol Buddy. I totally agree with what you are saying here.The fact that he has no clue what League of Legends says it all, as well as the small insult to Imagine Dragons... I was quite surprised to see that VICE had done so poorly on this documentary. They normally do their research beforehand like all the drug documentaries with that one single guy doing all of them. Why is there nobody that specialize in gaming or even just computers in general. (maybe computers is too broad) But either way, I was quite disappointed as well. I'd want people to see how vast of world of gaming has become, starting from when Starcraft 1 had become huge in Korea or just starting from Battle.net of the blizzard franchise. Maybe like, history of how Esports has evolved. Even sports channels show esports on TV for darn sake.

+Destiny202 Although I agree with your comment 100%, I think that this documentary was based around exposing this to the general public, and not the gamer population. I do think, however, that the host should have had some connection to gaming. For example, when he took the college students to a night club, that was his idea of fun, not playing video games. With a documentary based on video games, that should be the focus. Going out and having a good time is fun and all, but I have a better connection to the people I play video games with mostly because we have to play off each other, and we learn our playing styles. That's just my opinion :3

@MesmerGW2
@MesmerGW2 9 лет назад
KunjaBihariKrishna the chinese league of legends players are the richest. The top 5 chinese teams are owned by billionares (one the second wealthiest person in China), and pay for the best talent from all regions no matter the price. There are statistics out there that show league is played over 4x more in china than Dota 2. Dont you think the biggest game in china will also give the biggest payout? China already won the Dota 2 world championship, and theyve gotten straight fucked 2 years in a row by korean teams. The Chinese are fed up with losing, so now they will do anything to get the best league players even if it costs them millions per person.
@KunjaBihariKrishna
@KunjaBihariKrishna 9 лет назад
MesmerGW2 The members of the chinese dota team "Newbie" won more money in one tournament (ti4) than any LoL player in the world did in total. Each team member won more than a million each. Sure LoL is more popular.. but the fact is that there are no LoL players that have earned anything close to what dota players have earned. As far as dota goes, korean teams are really bad right now. They didn't even qualify for the world tournament.
@MrSu

I think it's partially because video games have almost no real life application. getting good at video games just helps you play video games...it leads to nothing more. where as there are legitimate benefits to becoming fit while also playing a "real" sport just my two cents. naturally there is alot more to it than that
@Poblasai9
@Poblasai9 6 лет назад
Imagine a journalist traveling to the other side of the world to make an hour long documentary on baseball, but the journalist doesn't bother to learn the difference between a ball and strike before hand. That's what you get here. At best a half-hearted look at the eSports culture, and at worst thinly-veiled and condescending disinterest with eSports culture. There are segments that are interesting and informative, but these are starkly contrasted by segments where the host's almost willful ignorance of the subject and condescension over the culture are the only things to be learned. Two moments of surprising unprofessionalism standout. First, while cover a group of gamers and their weekend routine, the host begins to pout about being left out when they start playing games. Then, instead of playing games with them -- an activity that would produce more insight into the culture -- he coerces the group to go to a traditional club with the purpose of getting them out of their comfort zone; their comfort zone being the thing he's making a documentary about. Second, the host takes a petty and pointless jab at a musical group, Imagine Dragons (1:00:26). I'm not a fan of Imagine Dragon and like the host I can't recall meeting people who are fans of them, but the obvious conclusion is that my social circle and I are not the target audience. Speaking of target audiences, it's hard to tell who's the target audience of this documentary. Gamers will likely find the palpable moments of condescension off putting. Non-gamers will not gain any sincere knowledge of the culture as it's evident that the host himself is reluctant to delve into it and learn himself. Perhaps the target audience are people of other counter-cultures who want to dismissively, but not too dismissively, look at another counter culture while pretending to learn something about it.
@angelam4157
@angelam4157 6 лет назад
agreed!!!! there are some parts of this that are actually good, but others... geez. Would have been alot better had he tried to even play the game to see what the draw to it was, and attempt to learn about it. Instead, he basically insisted that they go clubbing. Personally, I'd rather see my kid playing games online than out drinking and clubbing all the time. He just seemed totally put off that they dismissed him, and his poor ego was damaged.

+zellarsDD777 I'm not sure it's that which is a good point. My issue with VICE is more that they color and limit their internet-cast to a pretty narrow perspective. That to me is troublesome and why I don't take VICE seriously. In reality, I think VICE is a trojan horse in alternative media to fulfill a niche but ultimately distract from the important elements of human interaction and if I am right; I resent that. Time will tell but assuming compulsive gaming is a disease is curiously assuming a lot of things.

+Novilene Dixon you know when progress creates New careers most people who like it would take it. pro gaming and cosplaying is a thing now. it can't be stopped and is well backed up. it's not a bad thing. what is a bad thing is how this reporter thinks that he can just impose on other people's lives or friendships because he doesn't like their taste. those people in the internet cafe literally had a few drinks without getting drunk, played some games and had fun talking; they had girls with them too so this isn't a one-sided gender thing, and enjoyed it. he felt shunned but could have just asked to learn the game. instead dragged them to a club where they hated the activities but had enough respect to follow him. the reporter is the only bad person here who has no social skills in "Lala land"

You really can't predict where eSports are gonna go. It might crash and burn, or go onto flourish in unique circumstances like the X Games. In reality it probably will continue to grow as long as companies want to sponsor and viewers keep watching Many sports higher ups like Mavs owner Mark Cuban and Rockets GM Daryl Morey both have expressed interest and see potential in eSports. Call of Duty and Counter Strike were at the last 2 XGames events. Even the freaking Olympics are considering eSports to draw a younger market that no longer care for the Olympics.

i agree CS and SF are in my opinion the most demanding in tactics, mind games and skill in CS GO like american football you need both the tactics/game plans and players with skill to preform them SF is all about mind games and reading your opponent, like boxing with no physical interaction but the mind games reach a higher level than boxing, their at the level of chess but at a higher pace
@SomeRandomDude270
@SomeRandomDude270 9 лет назад
Agreed, CSGO all the way
@crackhead908
@crackhead908 9 лет назад
scar432 You must not know anything about competitive league then because it also requires a combination of tactics and mechanical skill. There are about 120 champions each with their own skill sets and the best players need to master a good chunk of them and know enough about the rest to play against them and know what they are capable of. They need to know how different match ups work and how certain champions synergize together on the same team. Also, there are hundreds of different items to buy, each with different passive stats and active abilites. How many guns are there in CSGO? Maybe 6 that are actually used. So to undermine the complexity of LoL and and the skill and know-how required to reach the highest level is just absurd.

@GutsLikesItInTheAss 9 лет назад
Yea, hate to say it. But asians ruin the whole point of it being "fun". Same thing happening with Dota 2, the asians just try to finish the game as fast as possible with the most generic and exploitive of methods.
@scar432
@scar432 9 лет назад
crackhead908 its a more active game, where reactions must be top notch to excel , i get you point but the execution you need in LoL is not the same as CS GO or SF4 SF4 execution must be practiced like an instrument and the match up knowledge goes all the way from specials, Normals, walk speed, jump arc, etc... even Frame data (start up of each move, active frames where it can damage and recovery) must be learned to play a match up at full potential but LoL has the team play factor, all eSport like games at high level play are hard to master but LoL is casual friendly as of jump in and start doing stuff , unlike CSGO where if its your first time you wont be hitting shit or SF4 you wont land combos and those are just the basics of playing the game at a casual level, in LoL you just need one guy in your team to give you a simple role to start playing and thats the appeal, its addictive becuse of the short learning curve to start having fun, MOBAS are replacing shooters as the new mainstream genre becuse of the pick up and play aspect of LoL, and dont tell me that more than 10% of LoL players know the match ups for even top tier hero's, 70M is a big number i would actually be impressed if that 10% had basic match up knowledge of the entire cast

The first part of the documentary is quite interesting and provides information about the negative aspects of being a pro-gamer. However, there is a point after which the reporter starts to judge those guys behaviour and therefore, he's being biased. He cannot conduct a documentary and emit his opinion like the way he did. In the end, rather than a documentary, it's a video where the journalist expresses his thoughts about e-sports.

The point is people are attracted to performance, skill, competition, and a sense of community. It's not about the physicality of it. It's great to watch people who are incredibly talented and trained compete to prove they are the very best. In that sense eSports are like regular sports. Regardless of what you think, this will happen whether you like it or not, so why be so negative about it? Maybe consider your reaction is based on some bias or fear of the unknown.

You don't realize it but you've been manipulated by society to think these things add value to your life when in truth it's just a distraction from reality and from you being the individual you were meant to be. I find it weird that no football or B-ball documentary ever brought up addiction to the sport, whereas pretty much every time eSports is on the table, it get's brought up. How about you actually let go of your prejudice and deal with eSports in one documentary and addiction in another, as the two aren't even remotely related.
@Zoronii
@Zoronii 9 лет назад
There's a reason most games in Japan and Korea tell you to take breaks, though. People have died sitting in PC cafe chairs after 3+ day gaming marathons. It's hard to become addicted to a physical activity when you need to rest every couple days. It's really easy to become addicted to something that you can binge on for as long as you want. Addiction and gaming are very much related.
@Mr16thPrestige
@Mr16thPrestige 9 лет назад
Zoronii Gaming addiction is definitely something very serious, but it has nothing to do with eSports.
@tmxyz0
@tmxyz0 9 лет назад
Well, as an alternative comparison, there has been condemnation about the physical injuries of sports that have led to other problems, including mental ones. Nevertheless, gaming has differences that Zoronii already listed and the general connection of gaming with health. Also, there was a part in the video where a researcher apparently said that there are differences in brain activity between eSports and "addiction"; nevertheless this doesn't justify any true distinction.

Vice has fallen over the past couple years with their docs. I wish journalist had some experience with what they are assigned to cover or at least some research from informative sources. Gamers always have that stigmatism of “no lives” which I was called a lot when I was young but coming from a rough neighborhood, gaming kept me away from the bad people. I did have friends throughout high school and had a social life but gaming was always a hobby of mine. The community itself is fun. I have been to several competitions at my local esports arena (Santa Ana) and the people you meet are always nice. Don’t be ashamed to be a gamer.

Eh i'd disagree. From being a long time gamer, to somebody that only has the time to enjoy that pleasure 2 or 3 days out of the week, i'd say this is a great documentary for somebody that barely understands esports. Hell i've been playing video games for as long as my memory goes back... never been into esports, just not my thing. But i'd say Matt brings up an interesting point of view, being a reporter who doesn't understand to slowly getting it over his time there and interviewing. There's always multiple points of views to everything, good or bad, doesn't really matter. Hell he dives into the whole backscene of esports from cosplay all the way up to managers, which is an interesting point of view that most people wouldn't understand unless it was something that they understood or wanted to know about. This is a great 'expand your scopes' documentary. Sure he was naive and didn't completely understand things at first... but how else would you just jump into a topic, you gotta start from somewhere (Taking into consideration that he was genuinly interested in the topic of this doc from the get go). Plus as you can tell he's not a represintitive of the community at all, he's not trying to represent the community, he's trying to represent understanding of it. Like I said before I was never into esports and didn't really get it outside of how actual sports work(Baseball, basketball, etc. ) is a great analogy for how it works. After watching this documentary i'd definitely say I get esports... I may not be into it, but I understand and respect it in its own right... which is kind of the goal of this documentary as definitely shown in Matt's closing statements
