All I can say is WOW. This Abbot tells it like it is. We are the Orthodox of the last days. God help our monks and nuns and all of us awash in this broken culture. Yet God’s mercy is never ending - glory to Him!

The psychological impact of what we read determines what we think, what we say, and how we (re)act. The spiritual implications are unfathomable. "Out of the heart the mouth speaks." The times in which we live are very evil. The traps and temptations of the enemy are everywhere. Billy Graham once said that, "You cannot stop birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair!" Our Orthodox response must be to live according to the Spirit and this includes an austere, tempered life that exercises itself in prayer, fasting, spiritual reading, and chastity on so many different levels and fronts.

I can only imagine how difficult it is giving up on your addictions for complete faithfulness and focus on what the calling is being a monk. I can only imagine! Enjoyed this video!

As a former high school teacher, he is absolutely correct on the technology and abuse by young people and how prevalent it is. The monastics of Holy Cross are such wonderful Christian brothers and brotherhood. As I entered the Church, my visits there were so fulfilling. I look forward to the day when I can return.

A work ethic is crucial....and as a 56 year old man I see very few young men with a solid ethic. It's crucial and as my father said, "A strong work ethic, and a hard days work will keep idol minds, and dirty hands busy."

Indeed...this is a very early Christian (and monastic) teaching that we have, alas, largely lost...

I work with people not much younger than myself and am flabbergasted by the lack of work ethic and sense of entitlement.

For those interested in books Abbot Seraphim and his community recommend, I found this on their website (I will try to find out if this list is the same as the novice reading list referenced in the video!): www.holycross.org/pages/spiritual-reading-list
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 4 года назад
It's not identical but it is very close. I think the novice list has a few extra titles focused specifically on the monastic life. But if someone starts with that list, they'll reap great spiritual benefits and have a majority of the books read that are required of the novices.

This brought tears to my eyes. This man talks as if he is a servant but also a doctor. What love. Patience for his patients. It's no surprise his Monastery has seen exceptional growth ❤

You really should, it's a wonderful monastery and it is a great blessing to visit. Batuishka Seraphim is wonderful but every monk there is a blessing to speak with.

As an Orthodox archpriest I find that reading spiritual books is almost as edifying as prayer. This society is the most corrupt not only in the history of Christianity but in the history of the world. Even many people who go to church learn nothing and pray for material.things. May God enlighten us all because we can read of many examples of what happens when a nation turns their backs on Him.

Thank you for this. May I request more from such distinguished spiritual persons? Names such as Fr. Maximos Constas, come to mind. It looks like Fr. Alexis Trader is in North America, perhaps he would be willing to sit for an interview. Maybe Mother Melania out in California would be a good one. I appreciate all of your work, you've had a lot of good interviews, Thank You!

My concern is, as a regular layperson, what do I do to detach myself from the distractions available to me. For various reasons I do live an isolated lifestyle, am a solitary individual and am not working. For a layperson who wishes to pursue God, this is about as good as it can get.But I can only read my Bible so much. Should I increase my prayer? I pray every morning. Maybe I should find more to do around the house to keep me busy?
