There is an even cheaper room (off the records) underneath the front steps at £35 , with a small courtyard. That is literally just the bed in the alcove under the front steps...very tight...you showed it in one of the photos. Literally just a bed and walls and side cabinet and a fire door into a courtyard below the street. Stayed 2 nights...really cool little place. For £35 it's my go to if I need a night to stay in London...very reasonable for the price. It's grotty but they do keep it clean. You can't book it online you have to 'ask nicely' at the counter and just give a quick rub of your nose. However, I did have the courtyard to myself so could pop out and have a smoke whenever I wanted.
@@tobyjackman3212 True, but it is being refurbished and Cambridge now has a high speed rail link to London so no point for me anymore. But such a cool little nuance factoid. Sometimes the cleaner stays in that room but they do keep it like a hotel room. I think fire safety prevents them from letting it out (officially) because it is just 'too small'. Literally the cupboard underneath the stairs. The fire exit is literally just outside the room into the courtyard - so your very safe from fire. It is literally red tape , "room must be x-amount square meters" blah, blah, etc.
@@coreyandersson1786 like several rooms in this hotel, you use the shower rooms and toilet half way up the stairs. You can see it briefly in the video as he goes up the stairs.
Loved this vid! I have paid £180 in a hotel along the Bayswater road that honestly had tons of issues with plumbing, carpets, decor, leaks - really run down.. So for what you needed (a bed for the night after a lock-in at an Irish pub 🙈🤣 before continuing to make further fab content for us) it was ideal! The bad reviews make no sense.. if you pay £57 in the middle of London, you simply *CANNOT* expect all the home comforts.. Fascinating vlog.. 👍
No one expects "all the home comforts" but when a place isn't even clean and there's no heat or hot water I think it's fair enough to complain and that's usually the thing that bothers us the most about cheap hotels. I've stayed in many a place where they say they won't clean it while you're there but I didn't expect them not to clean it between guests. Top tip, never ever take look at the mattress if these places.
@@pimpozza I'm exaggerating a bit I'm sure they try but in really cheap places they probably don't have the time to do a good job. I'm not suggesting going round the room ala "Four in a Bed" looking for dust but you also don't wanna find hairs in your bed or stains on the mattress. 🤮
I don't think many people know that over the summer you can stay in university hall of residence. So for example right near the Royal Albert Hall is Imperial College. You can stay for about £95 there, which compared to some nightly prices of hotels in the area at £300+ it's a bargain, and probably not as grubby as the hotel you stayed in!
Way back in 2004 on our first /3 trips to the UK ( wife's country of birth) we stayed two unforgettable night in an establishment in the Cowgate in Edinburgh... after water started coming through the ceiling of our groundfloor room for the four of use ( our adult chn were working in London ),, we secured a room in a converted ex factory or something from the city's Victorian past...... after that we did stay two nights,,, rather More expensively in modern uni hostels nearby--very nice, secure, clean etc but $$. NZers are very adaptable......
One to keep an eye on, this channel. I have watched a few videos over the last couple of months but have only just bothered to look at the sub count - I would have guessed a few hundred thousand and was surprised to see only 34K. Nice relatable vibe about the guy, who makes interesting content without any garish, annoying, cringe-worthy effects or graphics. Just a straight-up 'bloke next door' feel about it all. The sort of chap you would want to have a pint with - and that's a good stick to gauge any vlogger by. Good stuff :) Jesus. I should start a review channel. I'm good at this.
Hey mate thank you for that! Always nice to hear good feedback and that people enjoy my content! Keeps me motivated to crack on with more stuff so it doesn’t go unnoticed 😀 👍👍👍
During the summer time you can stay in University accommodation used by students who have left for the holidays in Central London. Roughly £70 to £80 a night. Standards will be better.
Looks fine for £57 in that area, top review by the way, it's not often reviewers get too drunk to remember what the place they're reviewing was like, you earned a sub because RU-vid needs more content like this. :D
You should check the inside of the pillow insert. We stayed in a hotel that cost almost $200 Australian dollars. When we checked the pillow insert, it was really moulded.
Thanks for the review. I'm like you, I don't mind it a bit rough. As long as I get a good sleep. That seemed okay . I used to work away a lot as an electrician. Stopped in lots of dives. But, it's not supposed to be a holiday is it? It's a room for the night!
Stayed at the midland Hotel in Derby, right next to railway station. In the bathroom there was no grout between floor tiles, tiles were loose an cracked. You got a bargain, it cost £65 per night!. In 2014
The bathroom was clean and the room wasn't that bad. I think in New York people pay thousands to rent apartments that are similar but with a hot plate and refrigerator.
The Hostel - Abercorn House Hostel - in Hammersmith used to be £52 a night for a private double room. It’s our best kept secret - and designed for long stay international tourists.
I enjoyed watching your video. It's surprising to see that there are still at least a few hotels with reasonable prices left in central London, in spite of the fact a good amount of work needs doing on the hotel. I think you have a really good style of presenting that makes it interesting for the viewer to watch. You may be interested to know I've left several comments on your Exploring Property in The South West of France video. I live in the Périgueux area and I really enjoyed watching a video of the streets and areas of the city I know so well !
13 pints of Guinness? Ruddy hell! I hope the room's plumbing was up to the job! Seriously though that room did not look too bad at all! I've stayed in worse for more. As others have said, always check for bed bugs, but otherwise well done - good find!👍
WT. I once stayed in a place near Paddington1998 for six weeks. It was £35 a night room only. It had a little payment laundry area with iron no board just iron. The clothes cupboard was wedged to one side as the floor sloped. It had a little TV and you could get coffee from downstairs. The doors and walls were pre-fabricated and they were still building the hotel around you, there was wet paint everywhere. However, it was ok. I left London because of the job and £250 pm transport charges. I had nothing hardly left from my wages. I went to Torquay for less money but better off.
I've stayed in those £150+ hotels in London. Grotty wallpaper, damaged carpet, damaged furniture, mildew in the bathroom, seen it all. The hotel you stayed in was a bit of an adventure, but not horrible at all.
It makes me wonder why they haven't sold it - must be worth millions. Maybe local council change of use regulations? And I wonder if it will be so cheap after the renovations. Seems OK, but I could never manage those stairs!
oh really, i stayed in the one in central manchester for 2 nights coz it was the cheapest place that popped up on short notice, wasnt that cheap - wasn't too bad either. No wifi in rooms, a bit tired decor and was a hint of smoke smell from people who'd stayed but was clean and spacious enough. Didn't bother me. Im not fancy either though. Just need a bed and a shower and towel and sheets. Don't even care about some carpet stains and noise so much (id sleep through a war).
@@fotoautomatmusic It's good that they aren't really expensive but I just feel a lot of their hotels are really nice old buildings that were once doing really well and have just been left to neglect and not looked after at all
totally and if they did a few minimal things they cld make it way nicer but then theyd charge more. I was just told Manhester was dodgy so I thought it was the norm. Not baggin on manchester it was a cool city. @@llanieliowe794
In 1987 on my way back from US I treated myself to a 5star hotel close Buk Palace. Real works of Art all over the place, silver service restaurant, 24 h bar everything. I stayed for 2 nights...£200.00 (£100 pn) and that was expensive....I wonder how much now!
Your video reminded me of another nearby hotel called Hanover Hotel Victoria in London. I stayed there on occasions years ago when I was a lot younger when my Venezuelan ex girlfriend invited me over when she wasn’t working at night as a lap dancer in the nightclubs, while staying in the U.K. on a 6 month visa… As for the hotel you stayed in for £50, that’s a bargain in an exclusive part of London. Those listed Victorian and Georgian buildings look nice on the outside painted white but terrible on the inside with plasterboard walls because they are converted into multiple rooms to generate as much cash as possible for the hotel. At the end of the day, so long as there’s no black mould, and the toilet is clean with clean towels and clean bed linen, what’s not to like.
As I was once informed by an American lady friend: "All you need is a cheap room for Gods sake and a tap, why are you paying so much? are you planning to sxxg the chandeliers!" She was a New Yorker, they do so have a interesting way with words. Lol.
I love how you check the room and say, "I'm seeing liitle things", casually adding, "looks like someone punched the door" 😂 Did you check the mattress? Any signs of bed bugs? I'd suggest, it's always worth checking the YHA's in London. Prices vary during the year. Can get a real (clean!) bargain 😉 Thanks for another fascinating vid 👍
I'd be really interested in your take on the price of beach huts - some are going for £400-500k!!! Might be a good video idea at some point. Keep up the good work! :)
They do sell beach huts here in Brighton as well as phone boxes for £10k to £15k! One could start an empire by buying a row of phone booths. Also Brighton has one of the highest concentration of pubs per sq km - so another reason to do a video in Brighton 👍@@wanderingturnip
Selling beach huts in Christchurch near Bournemouth and they have Council tax bills added. Also Lytham St. Anne near blackpool have beautiful beach huts for sale, very expensive.
@wanderingturnip The ones I was hearing about were in Mudeford, Christchurch down on the South Coast, but I'm sure they're all along the coast down there.
I know you slept well but how was that mattress really! That would be something I’d need, a comfy and clean bed. The bathroom looked fine. I think you chose an absolute bargain hotel room. Congrats. Enjoyed seeing it. Thanks. Love your content.
I would hate to stay in that room but I like your honesty here - it's just yourself for one night and you did not want to pay more. I think you are absolutely right with regards to people's expectations too, if you pay £58 in central London then you get what you pay for. I'd love you to do a follow up video when they have finished the work that they are doing. Also really enjoyed seeing the hangover, made me laugh! A very honest video all round.
Somewhere like that always put your bag down in the shower or bath first before you check the bed and mattress carefully for bed bugs. You do not want those hitching a lift back to your home.
A word of advice....ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS check for bed bugs in places like this you could easily take them back home with you and that'll be one expensive painful lesson lol
Bed bugs happen in $500 hotels, it’s really a matter of how often the sheets are changed. I’d bet an expensive suite that rarely gets used is more likely to have them than a cheap hotel with lots of customers.
I think, as long as it’s comfortable, clean, that’s all you need. You have a bathroom, good bed. I stayed for a couple of nights at a very pricey hotel, the expense was very high. My view was shite, the toilet was blocked, I had a lot of issues. Looking at what you had, was much better.
There are hotels like this in Kings Cross which have a scam going with the local homeless folks, they'll ask you to buy them a room for the night and tell you that you can go to the hotel to pay so that you know they won't just blow the money on drugs. Once you do they go straight out and sell the same room again and again and spend the kickback on drugs anyway.
For the price and location it was absolutely fine. People complain way too much on Trip Advisor at that price range. They want to pay $50 for a room and spend all their time complaining how it wasnt five star luxury. You get what you pay for. Much more privacy and quiet than a hostel.
I’m not sure what people are expecting if they are paying £50 a night in London. The room wasn’t too bad, it is run down but what do you expect for £50.
Yaaa. I'd do it. Stayed in an airbnb in London a few years ago in Soho that was comparable and I think it cost me 100 quid. Love your channel David. It's my new favorite!
I stayed in the cheapest hotel in london for £48. No breakfast, no TV, no other stuffs that a usual hotel offers, just the bed all to yourself alone, towels, basic toiletries, that’s it. The room is underground though and really small. But hey, if you just need a bed to sleep on through the night but not comfortable sleeping in Hostels with other strangers, it’s a very good option. I definitely stay in it again.
I would love the Wandering Turnip to do a special excursion to the now (criminally) destroyed Crooked House in Hanley WM. Interesting to see if he could get some feedback from the locals on this 200 year old irreplaceable Inn.
Himley is the location in the Black Country. Such a sad loss. It wasn't just Crooked it was a mirage. Rolling a marble on the windows, the marbles appeared to go UP the SLOPE They kept a jar of marbles for visitors to try out and see this phenomenon for themselves. Beautiful restaurant too. Was planning to go there end of September 😢
£57 isn't bad for the hotel room in London. However, walking up the stairs that appears to have been covered in a dust sheet is a bit concerning. As always, a great video, looking forward to the next one!
Really nice road and honestly not that bad at all for a few nights on the cheap in central London! It is grotty but it has all the necessities and amenities, maybe just missing a fridge, but otherwise perfect to lay your weary head down.
I stayed in that area a lot for work and those types of hotels often have really bad reviews, I've stayed in worse than that though. If you think it's bad when the weather is mild book it in the middle of a heatwave or the coldest day of winter 😲 It's like the owners can't afford to keep up with the maintenance and just completely give up.
@@DadgeCity Yeah but as it's a hotel surely you don't really have a choice, eventually you'll choose to do it or be forced to. Some of the places I stayed in start doing work floor by floor so they're getting it done albeit slowly.
Hello, I'm from Spain and I find your videos very interesting. I would thank you if you could upload more videos about England (or the UK) showing streets, places, things about British culture, etc. A greeting.
I stayed there, it wasn't SO bad especially when you come back from a night drinking. Just fell asleep on top of the bed :') Also we have a mutual IMDB credit, thought you looked familiar when your vid popped up on my home page.
I booked a cheap room (without paying) in Paddington when I went to work in London once. When I got there the room was to be shared with about 20 people and sleeping on the floor so I left. I couldn't believe that.
I stayed there in 1985 and it was considered the worst and cheapest then as well, though I think today it is a little better. I recall staying in a partitioned-off cubicle type area with a cot for a bed, and no TV.
I've lived in worse and probably will again. Here's a tip, though: if you are a traveller, there is nothing to stop you putting up a one-person tent inside the room. Best of all possible worlds. I saw a guy doing this long-term in a very grotty unheated apartment.
I used stay at the no frills County Hotel .Woburn place ,near Euston station and Russel square .£40 a night for a single room .Shared bath and toilet .It was fine but is now closed and under going refurbishment .Will be a lot more per night when they reopen.
Hi mate. Check out Elizabeth Street in Barnsley. 15k boarded up houses for sale. I used to live in there. One house was set on fire while I loved on the street. 10 years ago it wasn't a bad street but now it's a dive.
There was a place near Euston Station I`ve stopped at a couple of times , I think it was called The Crown , £60 odd quid a night shared bathroom , I tried to find it recently and I think it is getting done up / improved by a Hotel group
I stayed at the Snoozebox near the Abba Arena over the summer. Was about $100 per night. Just a pod hotel but was very nice and convenient access to the DLR. Only bad part was being out in the middle of nowhere. Yotel @ Bethnal Green - Shoreditch was $150. Super nice for 50% more. Probably cheaper outside of summer.
Back in 2011 I would regularly get really cheap deals on Travelodge. We’re talking, and I shit you not, £12 for Travelodge Covent Garden, £17 for Euston and Kings Cross.
I am thinking that maybe it has been upgraded since the last guest stayed? Possible, since the builders are there. It does not look too bad. I have stayed in worse! Thank you for the video!
That’s cheaper then my Airbnb in Leeds. £57 for Hyde park mate it’s a steal and a half honestly people need to tone there expectations cuz this is a lot better then a hostel at same price.
Crazy, isn't it. Back in very early 2020 (before Rona) I paid £175 for one night in the Travelodge on City road. Then got a return ticket to Miami with Virgin for £185! :) Hotel prices in London are just crazy!
I just stayed in a “hotel” on Harrow Road that worked out at £23 per person per night for a twin room, we found it on a major booking site (hint). It was bloody horrible, but the beds were new and lovely.
