Whatever you do, don’t lick the lining of the forge. That can be deadly. Also important not to eat it. And don’t straddle or sit on it while the burner is on, or for many hours after it has been in use. Further, it should not be used for cooking food or boiling water for tea. Hopefully I haven’t missed anything! Stay safe!

When we had our first daughter, I wanted her name to be Crystalline Silica but we went with Aluminium Phosphide, instead. I'm not sure her teachers and fellow students really understand the impact that has on her life - we just gotta breathe through these things sometimes.

Well I can tell you that it most certainly holds up over time. I imagine 1400+ knives/items forged in it over 2 years. Some fluting damage now around the burner housing but that is it. Probably the most incredible buy you will ever make in forging.

Please don't ever stop making videos. Everything you say is so informative and your sense of humor is just superb. BTW I saw your vid titled "the one thing I can't talk about" and I 100% agree. 👍👍 Keep up your great work.

The only reason I use the satanite inside my forges is because of the refractory element. It seems to take less gas that way and once it's hot, it's really quick to reheat your piece.

The safety Sally patrol is an odd phenomenon. Out here saving lives one rude comment after another. I may have no need of such a forge but I appreciate knowing one exists at quite a reasonable price. Thank you for what you do.

A place where I take classes and go to open forge nights has been using them for a year. They work great for small projects. Completely reliable. I got mine a bit over a year ago when they were still under $60. No problems at all. The Satanite still hasn't cracked. The rigidizer rigidized.

I bought one last year and I've nothing but great success with it. Even forged out several billets of Damascus. I would absolutely use the satanite lining because it will hold heat way better and give the forge a lot longer life. It's easy and very good stuff.

Dude you're legend! This little $80 forge is for those who wanna try out forging and don't wanna spend a fortune. Also this thing is safer then 90% of the videos on RU-vid showing people how to build a homemade forge period. People act as if technology doesn't exist also people run at the mouth before actually researching a product they wanna bash all over. Now this isn't the best option of course it's not, but it is a good option for a beginner with proper steps making sure is all safe like propane leaks as you stated.

I have a hero volcano forge, not only does that ridgidizer and satanite supposedly keep you safe, it protects the blanket from any damage by bumping it with your stock when you use the forge. I've moved mine a bit and still no cracks, be a year in August. I also recommend adding screws or bolts to the seams because stainless steel likes warping. And a braided hose with a guage instead of the stock one they send with it.

Good choice, in my opinion. I have been using that forge for over a year now. I have gone thru over 100 gallons of propane, and it is still doing fine. I did use the refractory that came with it and after about the 3rd time of use, it started cracking. But, regardless, that forge works great. I have made hammers and tongs with it (among other things), but still have not tried to forge weld with it yet. The company does say it will weld though.

It's shocking that they can sell something that can get this hot. I am deeply offended by anything that can reach temperatures of over 120F / 40C. I demand to see the manager!!!

Sad that I can only like this video once! Take responsibility for your own action and choices! This is a great little forge for the money. So yes, all you safety Sally's stay home and hide under your blankets.

Sees title "Why Is This $80 Forge So Controversial?" Probably because other 'experts' don't use it therefore = bad. Much like those that complain about Harbor Freight, Hi Point, Palmetto Arms, and a host of other thing. It works it's cheap therefore it mentally attacks their high dollar choice and they feel the need to talk down to people who enjoy, can't afford, made a personal choice or just rarely use not worth high dollar choices.

Love the bashing on the Sally's!! Using the Satanite refractory might safe you some gas though! And it is still good to mention that other refractory wools can be the cause of health issues.

While I read it I know from your videos your not a stupid man nor would you do something as unsafe as that. The negative commenters must not watch your content to understand that you a very capable and intelligent man. Just saying. Thanks again for showing us some cool stuff and educating us a lil bit more. I had no idea they made a forge like this. Your work shop has come along way from when you first bought the house. When I started forging I didn't use an anvil stand and well let's just say it's really easy to get hit in the face with what your working with lol !

I got one last year for my first forge. Love it. Definitely could be better but for less than $100 I couldn't make one much better. But it taught me the basics and what to do for the one I'm going to make

Great video as usual, I've had one of these forges for a little over a year now and it works great. Still alive to tell about it too. I do have bricks to block the openings. That really helps in about every aspect.

The "scene" where you lit the "flame" on your "death forge" frightened my cat, Snowflake who then leaped wildly about like a "rabid gazelle" causing me to aspirate a "raisin" into my left lung. I have had this forge for 2 years. It’s a great compact forge. AND YES, IT WILL FORGE WELD. I’ve done cable Damascus, San Mai and standard Damascus. I do not have a power hammer so canister Damascus isn’t on my list.

I bought the double burner and it worked amazing for about 1 month before the tack welds gave up. Ends of the burners will fall apart eventually but for the money you cant make one the same size. I have since taken the 2 burners off and used them in a DIY forge and it has made many many Damascus billets and blades. The coating they sent cracked away it 2 days plus I had to use all of it where they say use half and the rest for repairs. All in all it was more then worth the money and would recommend. Burners, hose, and pressure regulator would cost more then the whole setup if bought separate. If anyone is looking for a forge welding setup get the dual version. Well worth the money. Great review btw!

I have this forge, and its held up fine so far. I put the rigidizer, and satanite on it came with, and it did crack like you would expect over time, but it comes with extra to patch that up. The big thing i did though was line the inside with ht100 coating to help with efficiency. Of course i keep fire brick blocking the back, and part of the front also. It will get up to forge welding temps, but it definitely blows through gas getting there. Im wanting to modify it to take a small ribbon burner, i think i can get even better efficiency if i did that. As well as get more even heating. All in all, its a good forge. Especially for the price.

Hey bud been watching your channel for a while now. I bought one similar but made in India and I love it. I've ran it through a few heat cycles so far forging a couple gyuto blades and I've only gotten a little discoloration on the bottom where I blocked off the back like you did. I also painted the inside with the satanite. Keep up the good video's!

I use this forge for my hobby knife making. I close off one opening. It works great for me.

I have a similar one, it came with refractory cement to spread all over the insulation. It didn't come with rigidizer and I am impatient so I just went with the cement and it has held up great.

I use the SIMOND STORE Propane Forge Double Burner, 2600 F and it’s only like 20$ more for more length and fire power and it has nice thick steel I live mine so I would take that into consideration when buying this although this one looks nice to

I didn't know those mini forges have gotten so cheap! You're going to butt heads with the safety nuts no matter what you're doing. It's just the nature of social media and your job. I was more interested in how well this hot box gets hot, and it seems to do that, especially since I'm just a weekend hobbyist that might fire it up once a month. I am also interested in how you mount your anvil, when you get around to that.

I love my forge. Disconnect the burner from the top of the forge. Once you stop burning, the heat rises in a chimney effect. Saves in equipment. Great forge for the money and great video. Keep them coming sir. Also, I would also like the anvil stand video video if you make one.

"Made in America with global materials" usually means "parts made in china, assembled in america".

I bought one a month ago (Hero 2) it actually works awesome, obviously rubber lines aren't ideal. BTW definitely put the satanite in the forge, because I said so 😊. It gets hot, well beyond heat treatment temps.

Yo, you got the same foldable miter saw table I got. That thing is awesome, I roll mine out into the yard make my cuts fold it up and put it back. Keeps my shop clean and it’s quick and easy.

Interesting fact: A Panther Martin fishing lure is known to cause cancer in the state of California. I can't imagine the scenario where someone survives ingesting 500 treble hooks and then decades later the painted lures cause a cancer, but how can we not appreciate California's deep concern for health and safety? 😷

To even consider putting a unit like this one here together of this level of quality for the dollars this little baby costs right out of the box would be a total waste of time and effort. Thanks for another WELL DONE video! I suspect this will not get up to forge welding temperature - at least not very quickly, so in your opinion (or anyone else's?) could this be adapted to a small air-assisted ribbon burner? Has anyone tried to adapt this or other small kit unit to a ribbon burner? Sorry if that is a dumb question. As you probably know, those are super hot. Thanks again!

I think I'm going to order just a burner for $24. I have a stationary furnace I use with a home made burner, but for a little over twenty bucks I might give that one to try. Ian has no problem melting copper as it is, which is mostly what I do to make aluminum bronze.

Linenthe insdies with some fire brick to resolve the problems with warping and the silica particles, seal the back if you need to and boom even better forge

Have you checked out Essential Craftsman's quick forge? He uses some angle iron and fire brick with a store bought burner. He puts it together with all-thread and it looks pretty skookum. It looks like a great way to get into forging.

Seems great, wish the shipping cost to New Zealand wasn't more than the product :/ Still using your knife from a file as a guide and have made some great throwing knives for myself, so thanks Alex :) Especially as we have ridiculous knife laws here, so if I want anything fun I gotta make it... I don't suppose you could make a video around making a file throwing knife... (so slightly higher toughness and shock adsorption, over hardness and edge retention) but still done without the "traditional normalizing, forging, quenching....", just (if or) how the process, particularly the softening/annealing in the oven and how that process might change with a knife for that application.... You'll probably never see this but I gotta add that you turned knives from an interest/passion into an actual hobby and thing I can do, and as I lost my last profession/whole life when I got arthritis in my spine this and knife throwing has become my life in a way, sad as that sounds now I read it... but thanks anyway, your channel has been my barometer for it their bullshit youtubers who make most of their knife off screen... or decent makers just trying to show their interest and help others find a passion, ie' you :)

I saw an german old movie about old german jobs that dies out, "The last of it´s stand (or the last of it´s kind? translated) - The file chopper" he use hardening powder by the hardening process, that the individual rasps of the file, will not burn off (perhaps also in knifemaking a great deal) and for extra Carbon for extra hardness. He also does not hardening the file in water or oil, he uses saltwater for greater thermalproperties that give faster the temperature off. When a file is bending by that process he only uses a little bit of his strength and bend it straigth again by using only a bit of water over it and the bending problem is solved. Perhaps you can do a vid of it. The main igrediance of the hardening powder is cookingsalt, Charcoal dust, horn meal (flour) and also rubbing flour (that is the flour that falls in mills on the ground and would extra sold for such old Craft businesses. And the cleansing off of the powder he do with an very old technique who did craftmans over generations, he do in Dilute hydrochloric acid, than brushing, than water baths and than an oil bath as rust protection. And as last woring step 4 seconds in 740 degree celsius hot lead bath, only with the angle, this softens the material again so that it does not glaze and break. This job is died out in our times, cause in old times material was more worth than working time and now it is the opposite.

What is the surface you are resting the forge on? Concrete board?

Coating the wool helps it last longer. Yes it cracks but it doesn't matter at all.

Yeah, I don't know about the safety of that thing. Personally, I've found forges to be pretty dangerous without adding hysteria to the mix. I wouldn't want that one because it's completely open unless I modify it. If I were to modify it, I'd probably just build something that suits me better. Like the one I have currently. I do have to say that it might be a good option if you're broke. That's just my take on it.

Are you certain that the claim of the no silica release isn't based off of using the red hardener and the coating? You'd think it would be easy to say it doesn't emit fibers when the blanket is completely coated in the sealant and Crete mix

it is usually ceramic fiber not any silica we use that at work i breathed it for 37 years and im still alive.

If safety is always the biggest concern when making/building then a lot would not be made/build because there's no way to make it 100% safe. You could not even drive your car to work( you could crash) or prepare food( you could cut yourself).
