You're mistaken sir. Baking soda IS a chemical too. People need to get it through their heads that chemicals aren't necessarily bad. The food we eat is ALL chemicals, albeit a very complex mixture thereof. Now cost is another thing entirely. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is way cheaper than iron sulphate or most all of the commercially saleable preparations!

About 16 ounces. You can adjust the amount of water for how strong you want it to be. I found that to be the sweet spot to get the most bang for your buck. You can always adjust based on your situation.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, to me it is fugly and creates moisture problems for my soil which then creates problems for my leaching tank LOL and it kills my beautiful grass. my kids and i dont like playing on moss, it just feels gross LOL

Either would work but given that you are trying to do your entire backyard, the commercial product would be easier to spread. At the end of the day, do what you think is best for you and your situation

I just shook some baking soda on the moss and squirted water on it with a water bottle. About 2 or 3 good squirts . It worked.

Very reasonably priced in Canada, 50$ for 50 pounds to kill the moss without ph change.

For pavement or concrete I would recommend to use a pressure washer. Even if you used baking soda, eventually you’ll want to get it off. I’m not an expert on concrete but salts usually cause the most damage.

​@@BackyardLawnandGarden ... Yes ok, I found out the hard way not to use ice melting salt on concrete, because we had a major ice freeze last end of December over 4 months ago. I believe melting salt is part regular table salt, with calcium & magnesium. We had a small concrete walkway where some of its upper crust got lifted off due to the salt. It looks sort of crappy now. I will test with baking soda. I have used pressure washer & I was looking for a longer term solution because they eventually grow back a few months later. There seem to be products that inhibit algae & moss growth, such as something called "Stay Clean" etc, so I will look into that. Another thing I need is some kind of slug/snail barrier & deterrent, that not makes them crawl onto the concrete so they just turn back. I want to sprinkle table salt but then that would also damage the concrete, just like the ice melt did. I don't want to kill them or else you're stepping onto dead squishy slimey slugs which you will track under shoe into your home.

@@robwebnoid5763 look into copper tape as a slug and snail barrier. I was skeptical but also can’t use snail bait due to children and animals so given it’s low cost and easy online availability I gave it a try and have been pleasantly surprised and would estimate it’s around 99% effective. Apparently it’s like a teeny tiny electric slug fence and the shininess dulls over time too so you won’t dazzle the neighbours eyeballs for too long😁

Moss that grows on your roof is no different than moss that grows on the lawn. The baking soda should work but I would try it out on a small area first to ensure no discoloration happens on the shingle. It shouldn’t but it’s always better to proceed with caution. Yes, baking soda can also kill the grass. You would want to use this as a targeted application instead of a blanket application. Once you get rid of the moss you’ll want to take the necessary steps to figure out the underlying reasons that moss is present and then correct it.

Baking soda can be harmful to pets. Check with your vet.

@@clayramsey019, yes iron kills it. BUT you have to be careful to not to get the iron on concrete or other types of cement. It will stain them.

100%, and also, are you going to put grass seed directly on top of the dead moss? Or are you going to scrape it away and put some good composted soil as a medium for your grass seed, in which case why are you bothering with the baking soda?

People are ignorant that “chemicals” make up EVERYTHING! Without chemicals there are no atoms or molecules. People are scared of the term, but they don’t realize what it even means!

Not for weeds but you can use white vinegar if you are looking for an alternative. If you use vinegar just note that it will kill weeds and grass.

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is a natural element. It is contained within our Blood, and the blood of all warm blooded animals. Hence the word natural.

Sure, that’s technically correct in a scientific sense. But it’s not terribly different from table salt and most people wouldn’t call table salt a “chemical” in casual conversation.
