Jenny Doan:Sensei of quilting! After 40+ years of seamstress work, reproduction Civil War era dresses and perpetual drooler over wonderful, exquisite quilt workings but trying and failing miserably once or twice...Jenny has actually convinced me that I CAN quilt! I'm studying daily and collecting fabrics for my up-and-coming grandbaby boy due in May! Thank you Jenny!!!
Don't be so negative quilty girl. Quilting is an expensive hobby or business. Jenny gives good short cut techniques and shows you how you can use them in your own quilts. I love these videos and have adapted them in many projects.
Jenny, I sure wish you were in Panama City Florida. I really enjoy your tutorials. You seem like a lot of fun and easy to learn from. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us :)
you can use the outer part of the fabric when you cut out the circle. iron that part on another background square. It would look like a reverse circle.
I love this quilt.I probably would hand applique the circles onto the squares since I do spend time in doctors offices. It keeps my hands busy. I would machine piece the squares together. Thank you Jenny, I love your tutorials and I learned so much from you.
Everything takes practice. The old adage 'practice makes perfect' is very true!!! I sell quilted wallhangings and people marvel at my stitching how straight it is and it only takes lots of practice. hope this helps!
Been so scared of circles but think I would give this technique a try, doesn't look so scary. Isn't it just like Jenny to take the fear away & give us that "can-do" feeling!!
Some of you ladies need to watch the video twice before you right a comment....the "paper" is paper backed fusible web and Jenny Ron's it to the back of the fabric and then removes the paper portion if it....secondly Jenny says at the beginning that the fabric requirements are 2 layer cakes....great video as usual Jenny...keep em comin'
You all will luv that sticky stuff when you get used to it I have used it a lot & also used my decorative stitch on my machine. thank you Jenny. Mammalou
I love this quilt Jenny, I enjoy your video's so much you have tought me how to quilt and I love it! Thank You so much, You are the best Joyce - Indiana
listen ladies. these videos are not about the exact execution, but the overall idea. in this example, the idea is that you cut circles (and even rings) to applique to a square to get a simple but nice block. you can do that any way you like. the point is to open your mind to the possibilities.
I just watched the story of the beginning to present of the Missouri Quilt Company on Facebook. It was wonderful!! I don't remember how I got hooked on your website, but I watch almost every day. It's a wonderful site and I wish you all the luck in the world. Looks like you have that already!!!
Love your tutorials! I use temporary spray glue often. But it too can be pricy. Don't tell anyone but sometimes I use very inexpensive glue sticks. Gluing one small piece at a time, I glue one piece only, stitch that in place then glue stick the next, etc. Because it is so cheap, it dries quickly, and often flakes off during or shortly after I have finished sewing.
Jenny! I work in a craft store, and we recently got in Teflon coated scissors in our scrapbooking department, I was so baffled as to why someone would want scissors with Teflon coating! I asked one of the customers that comes in all the time and she said they're wonderful for anything that is STICKY. The sticky doesn't stick to the Teflon! I bought a pair and I love them for fusible web!!!!
Kaye12566....the paper is Heat 'n Bond, and when she rips off the paper, the adhesive has been ironed to the back side of the fabric. Now the circle can be fused to the 10 inch square when she irons it down. The circle will stay in place while she sews around it. It's great stuff for applique!
Yep; and the little inner circles you cut out of half the blocks could be used, too. Maybe on a wide border? Maybe just another quilt. I dunno. Anyway, another super tutorial! Thanks!
Wait! Sizzix made dies for your templates? I'm so excited! I need to get my big shot pro fixed, but my regular size could use the smaller dies. Off to see where to buy, then save my pennies!
Morning Jenny, I have a question to ask. What would this look like with sashing between the blocks and if so what size sashing would look best. Love your tutorials and the work you do. Thanks. HAPPY QUILTING...
Jenny, I own an AccuQuilt and love the accuracy and speed I get when cutting the shapes out for my projects, I enjoyed watching you do the Cheerio quilt and found the Sizzix dies on your website and I just have to ask do you know if the Sizzix Dies will work with the Accuquilt? Thank you, Kim
This looks so cool. If you are not able to purchase the layer cakes, can you just cut out 10" squares? How much fabric would you need to cut the required squares?
K12566 I thought the same thing at first, the stuff she ironed on at first is a double sided fusible webbing, she needed to year the paper backing off to expose the other iron on surface. Hope that makes sense.??
I love that Sizzix has turned your templates into dies. I have a Big Shot (not the big studio one you have). Are your dies indicated as going with your templates with Sizzix?
id love to make a crib blanket using this pattern. I am wondering if I could use a charm pack so the circles on squares are smaller to fit the crib blanket better... any advise or suggestions?
I don't think there is a pattern Gail. Jenny uses two packs of 10" squares (layer cakes) - one for background squares and the other for circles. I would estimate the circles' outside edges are about 8" and the inner perhaps about 5" (maybe 6"). She fuses the circles to the 10" squares, sews down the edges of the circles, then sews those blocks into rows of six, with eight rows. Add your border and you're done!
Hello, I love your tutorials also here in Germany. There's a question I have to this tutorial and the Sizzix machine dies. How big are the 2 dies I need for this Cheerio Quilt?Thank you very much for your reply.
Dear MSQC ServicePlease answer to my question. I want to do this lovely Cheerio Quilt. I already have the Sizzix Big Shot Plus Machine. But I don't have the needed Dies. Please tell me the size of the needed dies, so I can order them.Thank you very much for your advice.Ursula
Ursula Mahr the large Circle die would be at least an inch smaller than 10 inches I would say about 8 and half and the Inner Circle probably 5 I'm guessing I haven't done this one but she's using 10 inch squares and you need 1/4 inch at least to join your squares so the Outer Circle somewhere between 8/2 and 9 inches and the Inner Circle probably 5
I see the double wedding ring hanging in the background did you make that one please if you did tell me where's the tutorial can be found thank you Sherry
That looks really fun - quick too! Just a small query, do you cut the fabric away from behind your applique or leave it in place? Thank you again for a really interesting tutorial! :-) Sarah
ok i have to be missing something it says to get the materials needed follow the description below. where is that located. i cannot for the life of me find it. lol thanks
+Ayi Ayicute I use hemming tape a lot, as long as it sticks while you sew the circle down no problem at all! It is just a small roll of very thin membrane and it irons nicely and no bulk!
Ayi Ayicute if you use Elmer's Glue make sure that it is washable not the permanent glue it will Dutch dip I would not slather the whole back of the circle I would do a drizzle all over sit your circle down hit it with the iron in it will set the glue and your circle will stay in place
Tineke Williams Thank you for the info. I have tried every rotary cutter I have and none of them work. I'll bet the craft knife should be very sharp because I have not been able to cut fabric with a craft knife. Which craft knife are you using?
+Sonia Guzman just a skinny one bought in the hardware shop, I stole it off my husband who uses it to trim the bits of wallpaper left on the skirting boards, I tried it and it worked but watch your fingers!
Don't be so sure she is giving you accurate easy instructions. I purchased all the fabric she said was needed for the quilt top , received it, started cutting it out and ran out of fabric to complete it. THE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS WERE WRONG! I emailed them to let them know that the quilt could not be made as described, and asked if they would send me the fabric to complete it as it was their mistake. The answer was NO, but they would give me points NOT SATISFIED!
Oh Deer I'm trying to figure out where you went wrong. There are forty-two 10" squares in a layer cake. 6 in a row ×7 = 42. She said you needed one pack for the base and one pack for cutting the circles. That is forty two 10" squares exactly what is in the 2 packs. How were you short? Did you cut some wrong, because you wouldn't have enough then.
