Who knew there was so much science in a bowl of cereal?
Don’t miss our next video! SUBSCRIBE! ►► bit.ly/iotbs_sub
↓↓↓ More info and sources below ↓↓↓
Ever notice how cereal clumps up in your bowl, or how cereal sticks to the edges of the bowl? Bubbles in beverages do the same thing.You've probably seen this surface tension and buoyancy at work, but did you know there's some mind-blowing science behind it? What we learn in our cereal bowl even connects to the lives of tiny insects that walk on water.

Awesome video! So you showed that objects thay cause a depression in water and ones that cause upwards curves repel each each other. Is it correct to make an analogy to a stretchy sheet of rubber? i.e. if I were to push down on one part with my finger and pull up with up another, I would find it takes more energy to do that if the two points are closer together because I'm stretching a small section of the rubber sheet alot more. Therefore it is energetically favourable for the depression and curve upwards to occur further apart and hence this is why the two objects move away from each other.

You saying that made me realize it's the same reason why soap has to be added to water to make flea traps (shallow container of soap and water placed on the ground/floor for fleas to jump in). I figured it was to make the water bad for them. Nope... Just so they can sink.

This is literally the liquid version of magnets or a visualisation of spacetime and gravity-wells!
@gelfling
@gelfling 6 лет назад
Ludwig Harisuo can you explain more about this? When I saw the Cheerios repel I thought magnets, but what is it that is bent up or down for a magnet? Electron charges? I'm still new at this. Thanks!
@JustForComments666
@JustForComments666 5 лет назад
@@gelfling The attraction isn't created by the depression or hills per se, but the objects are just following the path of least resistance. The object that creates the hill does so because it's less dense than water but more dense than air. The object is actually creating a depression, not in the water but in the air above it. Like a heavy ball on a hill of air, the object will fall "down", because all the heavy stuff "above" it is pushing it. As for the depression you can think of 2 balls in a trampoline, which actually have a kind of hill between them but they still fall into each other because the "hill" at the opposite side is larger than that in the middle. It's also worth noting that the object creating the depression create it in the whole container, exactly like a membrane gets stretched, just because you only see the depression around the object where the bend is enough to be noticeable doesn't mean that it doesn't reach the edges of the container. And the repulsion between both is simply the combination of them. Purely gravitational phenomena. Magnets are very different and this is definitely not a liquid version of magnets.
@satibel
@satibel 5 лет назад
@@JustForComments666 this is a liquid version of magnets in the sense that the attraction and repulsion are exponential, which is to say they attract more the closer the 2 objects are.

I finally found the answer, by accident, that I didn't know I was looking for! When I was a kid many moons ago, my neighbor had a goldfish pond. They were nice enough to allow me to feed the fish. It was pellet food- and I was always intrigued how the pellets would float and attach with each other. I'd separate them, only for them to be forced together again. Little me thought this was magical. So thanks for answering the question I had many years ago sir! 😁

It won't, the water that's near the uncoated side is sticking to the side directly, it's not like the water level is effectively different in opposite sides of the vessel.

Great! I had a discussion with 2 engineers (computer modelling) about 20 years ago about why when you stir coffee without milk in the sound of the spoon clink on cup is different to after you've put milk in; they also pointed out to me that coffee with milk in is cooler so doesn't cool as fast as hotter black coffee - ish.

nah next will be the "snackman effect", where people psychologically associate the act of eating food with being peaceful. Example seen in video of fighting couple, man eating chips literally nonchalantly walks between them in the most savagely casual manner and is untouched because they stop fighting. It's not a voluntary effect, so they didn't think "Oh this man is eating lemme stop fighting" it's a subconscious thing like seeing other people yawn, having to pee when you see/hear water, laughing harder when someone else laughs, etc.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

If you make tiny balls of napkin paper (~1mm in diameter), and drop them on a candle flame, sometimes, they bounce on the flame (and can land several centimeters to the side). I would like to have an explanation for this effect.

I don't think it rises fast enough to make a ball of paper literally bounce.
@Vgamer311
@Vgamer311 6 лет назад
I think it depends on the mass of the paper ball but I suppose it could be related to the fluid properties of plasma. It acts a sort of semi-solid intermediary that isn’t quite solid, liquid, or gas. As such things can pass through it like a gas but it can still exert a tiny amount of force like a liquid or solid. I know it’s not a full scientific rundown but it’s what I’ve got for now.

You could! The issue with mercury (and gallium) is that they are so dense, most objects would be buoyant and very few objects would want to sink. I wonder how that would affect results. (There's also the fact that mercury is toxic ☠️)

@cooldude56g
@cooldude56g 6 лет назад
Abhishek Nangia I mean... yes we do float in swimming pools, but not for the reason you just said. The gases in our lungs (such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide) that are constantly cycling through us are buoyant enough to keep us above the water's surface and slightly decrease our weight relative to the water, allowing us to float via Archimedes's Law (our weight is decreased by a margin high enough to where we equal the weight of displaced water, causing flotation). It's easier if we lay flat on our backs to float because of surface tension, but that doesn't do you any good if you're especially fat.
