This video shows what education means to every Chinese family. Students from poor family tends to go for a higher degree whereas most people from middle class do not care about that too much, undergraduate is often enough. When the students from poor family encountered difficulties as a graduate, they also tend to commit suicide. Too sad.
And then at the top they don't even care about education or anything for that matter. That's why the country is so fukked. The higher the status the lower the education...
from 2007-2010 I worked at Chime-long Paradise Park in Guangzhou and lived in Clifford Estates in Panyu...We would drive motorcycles out into the village's around Panyu on our day off and see the same poverty as shown here, away from the glitz and glamour of neon lights in the city...Many of these villagers had never seen an American in real life...I Loved my time living and working in China and Loved meeting the people after our shows...I was impressed by how Happy they were, even though their lives were so hard...People that have nothing, appreciate everything and those that have everything, appreciate nothing !!! I made many friends while there and was sad to leave them behind and they will be in my Heart and fond memories forever...
I've been in guangzhou and you can really see people who are struggling specially when you go to their market. Kids on their uniform , helping their parents selling vegetables on the pathways. Things that you can only see in the movies ,but never thought that it happen as well in China..
Same here in the US. The worst poverty is not in the cities but in rural areas. The media and public don't care because "out of sight out of mind." Sad.
So true McDowell County/West Virginia, Washington DC/ Maryland, Michigan/Detroit/Flint just to name a few ! ...LoL ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mQPI-iEgfDE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eqceHviNBC4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VTKEx0N0DCY.html
The US definitely faces poverty. However, living in the US alone, you are richer than 90% of the people on this planet. We have government welfare programs and shelters that are accessible, and our poverty is not near as widespread. I’d rather be thinking about how we can help everyone who has experienced this much misfortune.
They just quietly wait till urbanization forces people to move to cities and those who remain die. It is really sad that we are forced to live in grey and dull overcrowded cities meanwhile many beautiful and unique towns and villages are disappearing.
@@mckenziemitchell6044 LoL ...when was the last time you seen the political elite visits the slums in the US ? You can't even take care of your veterans let alone the homeless !
E Tow Thank you for reiterating what I have already said about the US most definitely also being subject to poverty. Also, there are plenty of elites who address those who are poor specifically. Reread my comment and conduct some research on the elites of the US and their platforms/campaign promises. Also, my husband is in the military, and I am well aware of what it does and doesn’t provide. It’s a rapidly improving system that we have benefitted greatly from (those who have suffered most are unfortunately, primarily older vets) and we will continue to support legislation to help it thrive. My message is not that the US is better than China. My message is that us having poor people we need to care for doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to others who may need what we can give, especially those who are in worse circumstances. It’s always amusing to me when foreigners try to address my “ignorance” with their own.
I didn't really realize how "below the poverty line" these people were, until I heard that he made 400 yuan for a year's work. Considering that the factory workers I know gets paid 100 yuan a day.
my hometown used to be like this , but those years have been change a lot ! The government actually helps some people which live in broken house to rebuild the new one .Also help us build the road to our village . My village is in Guang xi province.
Seems quite desperate. However, we saw Hope too. Despite the poverty, the son still went to college. He might be the key to pull his whole family out of poverty.
Gunda Guy in China, if you’re hardworking, you always find a job. There are many unemployed people just because they are lazy or they imagine “decent” and “well-paid” jobs far beyond their abilities.
I feel bad for not thinking of the poor. All I thought of was about how pitiful I am. Everyday the privileged ignore the needy. Thank you SCMP for opening our eyes.
@@SpecialPenguinnn Yes, like how America bestowed unto the people of Libya and Iraq basic human rights and democracy, and subsequently improved their lives, right? Grow up, you imbecile.
Douglas Morato I think its 2300RMB a month, because the man in the video said he made around around 8000RMB a year. Even with 2300RMB a month its still hard imo
Which part of the Xiaoguancheng is this? There are 4 natural settlements in this administrative unit. There is a report that life has changed in a local report 5 months after this video is posted.
I can sense the negativity in the video and the BGM gives you an even depressing feeling. In the video, it also implies that only well-connected people are able to get the poverty relief fund. It is definitely true in some cases, but the situation has improved a lot since the drastic anti-corruption effort was strengthened.
The fact that they don't often receive and hear about the reliefs from the national government is so sad and heartbreaking. The government should do something about it cause they are gravely in need.
It takes time for a country of 1.7 billion people to alleviate everyone out of extreme poverty. Soon enough, these people will have more capital. They're located in Hebei province, on the unfortunate east side of Beijing proper. I'll give them 5 years, because the capital growth of China is THAT impressive. And than Western media can complain about how China is destroying old structures, destroying unique communities, and is wrecking havoc with the environment.

And this phenomenon of gap between rich and poor is not just limited to developing countries but others such as capitlaist usa where top 10% holds about 50 % of the wealt of the country compared to 90% and this gap is likely to increase. But the term poor wont be referred to any of these 90 percent as the living cost is higher than the rest of the world on avg
According to survey report 73% of Indian economic wealth has concentrated in the hand of 1% . Unemployment is severe. Huge salary gap. Please visit Indian hospitals you will understand the real situation of health facilities. India is the country where you can find out most number of malnourished and undernourished children in the world. Huge number of hungry people , just look at Hunger Index. Asia's largest slam is in India. Just go there you will find out the real situation.
@@sigma8112 nah there is no country where infact the gap is this wide another reasons is that survey upon india are not credible enough as pointed out by former iim proffessor and economists mr jai hari prasad who told to make the survey criteria appropriate to surveyers as the data and its interpretation was illogical as the data was processed on simple logic without even considering several factors. Hence unemployment is a problem literally everywhere but it depends on its magnitude.
It's brutal but human society has always been more or less like this for thousands of years except during the "communist era" in China when majority of people were equally poor.
President xi said no one will be left out. 800 million lifted out of poverty . 16 million still need help . The target was 2020 but because of trade wars and Covid disease etc , plans were delayed but surely will be done. Just keep healthy and the day will come.
no no no no. The only way to get out of poverty in China is to join the CCP. If you are not member of CCP you get nothing. You live poor for the rest of your life.
The problem is there are no banks and ATM in these villages and the money is hand out in cash. The remoteness of these places, caused the person who gets the money have the power to delay in handling the cash out.
Hong Shi what if they have ATM and money, but not the right infrastructure nor the skill to increase their life quality? I dont think money is the right answer for this ( give them money and they will spend it in one day not knowing on what to buy except food to survive ) Local goverment support is their best hope to increase their life quality.
This is Xiaoguancheng Village, in Nanmazhuang Township, Laiyuan County, the city of Baoding, Hebei province. Aerial map and your video shows that inhabitants settle along a river running north to south, where there are some flat lands for cultivation, beyond which are hills and mountains. Xiaoguancheng happens to be along the river corridor which has very little flat land. Could this be the reason that the village inhabitants are not farming? But they are still raising domestic animals. This landscape is not unique to this village, but is in all parts of China. It is not unusual for the village or town administrative to allocate cultivatable field to village inhabitants ready and willing to farm, in location slightly away from their home. So they can still farm they are willing to do so. I also know of villagers living close to hillside that raise goats, which are very capable of tackling steep slopes. From this video, it is still unclear that why are these villagers are considered very poor aside from that family with two disabled individuals. Why are they are not being more proactive ? During the last two decades, many villagers abandoned farming in their villages and went into major cities like Beijing to take up construction work. Now that those development are slowing down, they are back in their hometown, but many are not willing to farm again, aside from small patches of land raising vegetables for their own consumption. From the interview, it seems like the villagers knew of the poverty alleviation program and are just waiting for that to happen in their village. It should be noted that those extremely generous poverty alleviation projects for the minorities were applied mostly to those living in very inaccessible locations and unirrigatable lands.
In Capitalism, the riches will attract more and more money, like a magnet. While the poors will drive away wealth. You need a strong hands ( usually the government) to relocate the wealth. It's the same situation in a family. Weak family members (usually the women and children) will feed on little than the strong family members (Father and the Men).
WHETHERN people believe OR NOT. Everyone will be held accountable in the END of their lives for their actions. Scripture CLEARLY instructs to do charity. To much that is given MUCH is required!
What people conveniently forget about is this is a very common occurances in developing countries! For a better future, me and my brother are living in different countries and will probably forever be living apart from my parents in Indonesia.
😭😭😭 Thank you for bringing light to people who are forgotten. Pray the Chinese government will reach them and help these people. Abolishing poverty should be for the entire country, not just targeted areas.
Even this figure of 16 million people... it's clearly declining AND is around ONE PER CENT of the gigantic population! This is EXCELLENT performance, nobody else even comes close as far as I know.
I think they can earn the living if all the villagers group up together and work in a farming sector or making wooden furniture by the help of government.
The tuition and living expenses of Chinese universities are very cheap. There are also grants and interest-free student loans for poor students. The tuition of 4 years of general undergraduate course is less than 40000 yuan. The job in first-tier city after the university graduates, at least 6000 yuan a month after graduationcan, they can pay off debt at most one year.
People in the comments bitter about their own countries' poverty (but aren't actually destitutes that don't have access to internet) arguing like they know the lives of those people they are arguing fo. What a joke and insult to all those who suffer. It is not your country vs their country. It isn't a competition of who is worse off. There are no winners. Everyone is fighting a battle of their own. Please don't make this about you or by extension, your country.
It's sad how they want to work but yet no work is given to them. The ones who cannot work won't even get any govt help unless they know someone in govt.
It's amazing that this is a global trend, in Colombia and many times in South America is also the same. But here (Colombia) the Upper concentration of wealth goes to only 5% of population in Urban Areas and 1% in Rural areas.
Lee Lee Gotta somehow find a way to convince the Chinese government to invest their time and money into transforming/re-innovating the place. Doubt it’s gonna happen though, lol.
@@Andy-hz2ef move them out to nearby cityies may be a better idea. Some towns and villages are just not great in location at all since they were built in ancient farming time before there were cars and rails and nothing really going on there.
@@zhihaoling3324 This seems like the most common: People who are really poor live somewhere very remote, hard to drive, low rainfall.... It seems like poverty is intrinsic, you know, on a rocky hillside. YET there is clearly much advance. When I look at these people, I imagine how their grandparents might have lived, and also... there are not only poorer persons in the USA, but something we don't often mention: There are untold millions of people in the most dire poverty in our empire, or whatever you call it. I don't think anyone in a poor village in China wants to move to Guatemala or anything.
@@keicer5618 whether it's slow of fast the population is growing, along with the rest of the world, so the demand on resources will increase.. will China be able to feed itself in 20 years from now, will China become dependent on western countries..
imagine other government use their way to govern China since 1949, we will be like in the 1970s now. People kept forgetting the fact that the ratio between poor and middle class is changing all the time during 15 year economic growth.
Is there any way to get in touch with the people in this video? I’d like to send them something. At the income level they’re at pretty much anything would help. Like if all of us watching this sent that family $5-$10 it would make a huge difference. Not sure if the Chinese government would allow it but it would be nice to directly help this family rather than just watching a video about them. Also on a side note, that’s a lot of pressure on that boy and a ridiculous impossible amount of debt for that man.
What is the poverty line for China I'm from America and it maybe different what we consider poverty is? I personally don't have much but I have more than others and I'm grateful for what I do have and I pray for ones who have less than I do. ❤
@DA SB thanks for the information. College is very expensive where I live and a lot of poor families can't afford to send their children to college. Your dad has a very honorable job helping people out of poverty. Many blessings to you and the ones you love ❤
when we said the word poor, it relative to rich. Most of people grow up in cities are poor too, although they earn more, but they have too spend more too. An example is: A is earning 3000 dollars a year, pay rental 500 dollars, but no house loan to pay for; B is earning 8000 dollars, but have to pay house load 6000 dollars. Which person should you think is poorer? You may said B still better, he got his own house. but remember, he need to pay the house loan for 30 years. and because of higher pay, the opportunity actual is less, especially during the period when economy is down, B is tend to suicide while A still can strike to survive.
That's why many chinese people moved in the Philippines, coz theres much enough water , especially in the capital city but now, there's a water shortage, so many migrants here mostly Chinese
I wonder how that village even cropped up in the first place. I'd like to believe that living in a rural area simply means you have to farm for your own food, but obviously this isn't happening here.
In the past agriculture was communized and they would have farmed food and benefitted from it - but today this is not the case because of the criminal capitalist restoration.
Problem is how to resolve the poverty trap, if there is no any resource available for earning money, you should escape from there. Blind waiting makes you becoming more and more poor, to old man(woman) there is no way to make any choice on waiting of leaving, goverment has responsibility to send relief fund for guarant survive .
1 billion dollar can solve all these people problems. Build them a new modern house in a new plan town. That village in an old area with no sewers, plumbing, electricity. If China can build a 30 story building in 30 days. They can house them all.
Me parece claro che el trabajo hecho por el gobierno no ha sido muy eficaz en este pueblo, aún hay demasiado compromisos y problemas que necesitan más esfuerzo
The government is focus on lifting people out of poverty by providing jobs and economic opportunities. For elderly and sick people, the only way to lift them up is provide money in a constant base.
They live in a dry land,, so they should find crops that match with the soil, you wont get starved if you have lots of animals and veggies ,you don't need the city life,
Government can help but the villagers has to create ideas to reduce poverty. How about modern rearing of animal livestocks. This could help or food production since it is only 3 hrs from Beijing.
