According to Chinese folklore, Ng Mui was one of the legendary Five Elders who escaped the Qing Dynasty destruction of Shaolin Temple and went on to spread martial arts knowledge throughout China and the rest of the world. Said to be the originator of Wing Chun, Wu Mei Pai, Dragon Style, and White Crane martial arts, Ng Mui is a seriously badass woman of epic proportions. Here's what I learned about her when researching my painting called, "The Abbess."

Everyone, please take note that she used the words "legend", and "folklore" to qualify that it cannot be substantiated as fact. There are now Chinese academic historians who specialize in researching the origins of kung fu who have said that it is difficult to validate whether many kung fu stories are true, or whether they were just fanciful stories. For example, do you really believe 8 immortal gods created drunken style? Highly unlikely. One of the problems is that the origins of many kung fu style origins have no written history because they were passed down in the oral tradition where facts can get skewed or exaggerated. Even something like an Ip Man movie gets highly exaggerated and, unfortunately, many people assume they are factual like Ip Man going to America to visit Bruce Lee. It never happened. Some believe that a more plausible origin of wing chun was that it originated from the Red Junk opera troupe with various martial artists exchanging ideas and contributing to the style. Stories and legends are wonderful and important to keep a style alive but understand that it may just be folklore and not actually factual.

You people are extremely stupid if you believe that Ng Mui and Wing Chun existed!!! There are NO records of EITHER ONE existing!! The Chinese have records that date back over 400 years and there are no records of either one of them existing!! The five elders are: Choi Dak Jung; Fong Daai Hung; Ma Chiu Hing; Wu Dak Tai; Lei Sik Hoi.

@@ReginaLinke yeah, Adam Chan actually outlines this idea more, where he speculates WC's origins came from 班中詠春 or red boat, he covers this in a video from 2011, (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-opkNCu_y0Mk.html) and there's also a pretty recent one that's much more focused on WC's origins (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-II9pYRAedGk.html)

what an amazing episode. Since I was a little girl I loved watching kung fu and wing chun videos and now I am learning the wing chung 6 months. I love it, but my classes mostly focus on the fight rather that the art itself which I am lacking of. The whole beauty of it is to prevent the fight, to see the art of living in regard of the fight itself. Sending love from Poland, Europe.

@@ReginaLinke Hi Regina, Good video. Informative. As a bloke, what I love about Wing Chun Kung Fu is that it was created by a lady & taught to the 1st student, a female & the rest is history. Just goes to show we're equal & as an egeliterian ( meaning M & F are equal in all areas despite our biological differences) I practised Wing Chun as a teenager in the 1980's but didn't follow through. It's called life. But it has never left me. It's come & gone then back again over the past 40 or so years. Now it's like a revival & am practicing again. But with my conditions, I can only do so with my upper body, without my legs, so I'm practicing on my own. I can't even walk properly, let alone kick anything. So doing it properly is out the window 🪟 I'm afraid! I've learnt the Siu Nim Tao form but from a sitting position & am studying Wing Chun Kung Fu, academically & scientifically.

I trained in one of the most cut down versions of Wing Chun which was Ng Mui’s style. It didn’t have all the forms, no weapons, and many of the fancy stuff wasn’t added yet. It was a very short style to learn, only a few moves, but much practice in each of those moves. It has the low shin kick, the shin scrape, the basic slap block & punch (pok da) and grab/pull & punch (lop da) It had elbows, finger jab to the eyes, groin strikes with the front kick or knee, throat chops, heavy emphasis on side stepping and avoiding energy coming at you. This all may seem like a lot but it’s not. Wing Chun was NOT designed for cage fighting, but for self defense and escape, nothing more. It kills me to see people talk about it like it’s Karate or jui Jitsu, it’s not for sport, not even a “fighting” style, but just, you attack me, I side step and strike your throat and then I take off 🏃‍♂️💨

Hi Regina, that was very interesting and well researched, thankyou. I am a Wing Chun teacher and my second Master teacher was a very slender Chinese lady from Hong Kong who studied for 11 years fulltime with Master Yip Man's top student Chu Shong Tin. She was the living embodiment of the art I think. I once say her send a huge bully flying with what looked like a shrug. He was utterly defeated and she was being kind to him. As you seem a caring person I want to tell you that the real art still lives. It is not a fable that a small girl could defeat a large bully male however even women have bought into the idea that strength is only about muscle sinew and bone strength. This is untrue. Real strength, real kung fu power, is purely in the mind, the subconscious mind, the Nim Tau (anglicized Cantonese). Ng Mui's legacy lives on :) Your painting is lovely, I am a painter as well, however the time lapse was missing. Is there another link? Kindest regards, David

It was proven some time ago that the Ng Moi story is just a nice little fairy tale. Ip Chun Sifu admitted that his father Ip Man Sifu made up the story because he was being pressured by his students to write an article on the history of Wing Chun but he had told them many times that he did not know the full history of WCK so to satisfy the egos of his demanding students he created the whole Ng Moi story but in truth Ip Man Sifu only knew that he learned from Chan Wah Shun who learned from Leung Jan and so on. The very earliest known WCK came from the Red Boat Opera people. There is no evidence whatsoever that Ng Moi even existed.

The beautiful part about wing Chung is that a Buddhist nun of small stature, prayed incessantly to God, her God, which she called Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, a manifestation, like Avalokiteshvara of infinite compassion, and prayed to whatever God she knew that existed of infinite compassion to help her not get hurt because she was so small! And Buddha responded! like an avatar or a archangel, she had a response that showed her how to do the best scientific algorithm ever existed as far as self-defense is concerned. This algorithm was made famous by IP man, which was the teacher of Bruce Lee. IP man was small and stature and taught this algorithm to Bruce Lee who created Jeet Kundo, and in the book about Giocondo you can understand why are you gonna have to every once in a while switch up your cadence otherwise the enemy will be able to understand your trajectory

Great content, got to learn Wing Chun approximately 29 years ago. I was 19 years old when I first learned it. The story that I’ve heard is that a nun was threatened with sexual harassment on a road while she was traveling. Protected herself and the people she was with. She then later passed it on to other women, to protect themselves from such. Glad there is some more clarity on the roots of Wing Chun.

I dont like the legend that she is credited as inventing wing chun, its like it has become a novelty due to her gender. It was supposedly made by the 5 elders and only ng mui survived to pass it on. Ng Mui was allegedly a master of a wild assortment of styles, mostly southern, which dont resemble wing chun at all, though if she was related to Yue Fei she would know xinyi. It does however resemble dragon and bai mei, and she knew the former while Bak Mei invented the latter. Both dragon and xinyi are from henan, and dragon is supposedly from the hakka styles. This story may have been created to hide its association with minority, "red boat", people.

Well, in China, her grave has been found: Wu Mei Shitai not far from the South Shaolin in Shaolin Village, Dongzhang Town, Fuqing City, and the old people know that this place called Dongping in the mountains of Shaolin Village used to have a nunnery. Today, the archaeological excavations are the site of the Five Ancient Tombs of Shitai and the location of the nunnery. 五枚師太墳墓 If you put those words it will take you to the Shaolin temple report.

The reason the southern martial arts are so different is because there were 72 different ways to train at Shaolin you could compare to an Orchestra with different musicians all learn music but many instruments differ in type and use producing many varied musicians styles and types even after Shaolin, scholars picked through the library rubbles scores from that new styles were formed. What about the other Ba Hop Wing Chun and its roots as not much is mentioned about this connection.

Wu Mei understood and helped developed many skills and systems. She passed White Crane to those who have much time like monks and made Wing Chun as a fast way to transmit some of the high skills by making a complete but compressed style. Wu Mei(the style named after her) has 5 forms each of which utilizes its own unique and very advanced way of moving and using internal martial arts skills. The style of Wu Mei is almost lost and has only a couple masters still teach and those have diverged into different approaches. Master Yap Boh Heong has deep understanding of the Wu Mei system and perhaps a different historical link to her story through the history passed from master to student. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qwhqp0eJhDw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B9ywN6PJvCc.html

Great video! Only something overall (not specific for this video, just overall): To write the chinese names in 3 single names is a little bit outdated. Today in 2021 the western world has adopted to writhe cantonese and korea names with hyphen, and mandarin names together. From today´s standards, Wong Shun Leung should be written as: Wong Shun-leung or Shun-Leung in cantonese and Huang Chunliang in mandarin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Shun-leung) Same with other names like Shan Wah-shun or Yim Wing-chun (mandarin Yan Yongchun) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yim_Wing-chun en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan_Wah-shun Not important but maybe interesting for some people. Make an example: A) Wong Fei Hung B) Wong Fei-Hung C) Wong Fei-hung D) Wong Feihung A is very confusing since many ppl would think "Fei" is maybe a middle name like Fitzgerald from John Fitzgerald Kennedy. B is much better, but its still strange since it looks like Fei-Hung are two names like Jean-Claude. But its only one name with two syllables. C and D is the best way since anyone can see on the first look Fei-hung/Feihung is one name with two syllables like Patrick. 1Pat2rick Nobody would ever come to the idea to write the english name Patrick as Pat Rick (A). PS: The mothod C is mostly used for cantonese and korean names, like Wong Fei-hung or Hwang In-shik. The method D is mostly used for mandarin, like Huang Feihong or Li Zhenfan.

Independently if the story can be validated by historical facts, oral tradition to pass down events becomes parts of the culture of a country. In this case where there weren't written records the oral component is the only "book" available to be follow. Either way it is a good resource to start with. Nice exposed Ms Linke.

But please be educated do not keep passing these fairy tales as the real history of this great system. Yes, it’s only a legend based on oral traditions. But it served its purpose during the time of struggles. First of all, there is no trace of any records on the nun, the father, the husband, or YWC the girl. Second, there is no nun in the Shaolin Temples. That was never a part of Shaolin tradition. This is true in the North and South Temple. Third, the story is not logical. Why would the nun want to come out of hiding for some girl’s romantic problems? It will get both of them kill. During this time the Ching dynasty was very harsh with death penalties. The Ching authorities will kill nine generations out if you are caught as a rebel. Fourth, YWC is a secret code. Yim means to be discreet or to be secretive. Wing means to talk or praise. Chun is the word Spring which symbolizes rebirth. Together the word means to be secretive and keep talking and praising about the rebirth of the Ming Dynasty. The nun symbolizes the roots of Wing Chun which is Shaolin. Fifth, this whole story about the nun teaching a girl was actually borrowed or stolen oral tradition from the system of White Crane. Six, if this story were true that means the nun has to be at least 200 years old. The Temple was destroyed in the mid to late 1600s. Based on the story of the nun teaching to YWC and then she passed on to her husband, and finally the husband passed it on to the Red Boat Opera people, this happen in the middle of the 1800s. So there is a 200 years gap. Someone in this fairy tale has a secret to long life and lived two hundred years. Seven. For hundreds of thousands of years, the fighting is mostly done by the men, not the ladies. So if there is something more efficient for fighting, we men are the one that needs it, not only the ladies. Also, number eight. The effective human combat system is based on human nature and physiology, not based on some girl watching two animals fighting. The important thing here is that every oral tradition or fairy tale served its purpose. But please be educated do not keep passing these fairy tales as the real history of this great system

As I also learned it that Ngmui was one of Five Monks that had met to form what we now call wing Chun. It was formed by the five monks to help create a system of combat to help fight against the Hans as they , at the time, produced fighters in 2 years or so while it took Shaolin at that time, 10 plus years to produce fighters. So they needed a method to produce fighters a lot quicker. and as such, they took the best of Shaolin to form one cohesive method of fighting. With thst said, it was stated that "Wing Chun' was actually the Hall where they used to meet at. Later on, the person that help teach Luk Dim Boon Kwan into Wing Chun on the Red Junk Opera Boat was also one of the escaped five monks from the temple.

I will tell you a profound realization I've had long ago. Kung fu has everything one can IMAGINE in regards to moves (types, angles, heights, forces, speeds, distances, steps, types of defenses and attacks etc.), and strategies. All these are scattered among the countless kung fu arts. It's like an huge lake and everybody has a glass of water from it. My more profound realization is, all that kung fu includes, that is, from everything from ALL all the kf arts throughout history, is not discovered by humans, it's revealed by spirits; the intelligence behind even just building/structuring/creating a taolu/kata is not merely human. Can you discern the strategies in a taolu, the design and planning of the moves and sequences? It's inspiration given by spirits. This was one profound realization. Most likely, no one will see it my way and that's ok. But I am 100% sure my perspective is accurate. I mean listen to the narrative: a woman (I said A WOMAN!!!???) sees how crane moves and fights with a snake, and she (a woman!) creates a martial art based on her finds??... Really?? Are we so naive and gullible to believe that? This actually makes sense to you? Can't you see that the wisdom in these arts is not from humans? Have you seen cranes and snakes fight? Can you see and understand their movements? Would you think of using their moves when fighting another human? (

As a Wingchun practitioner taught by my father with linage to the Weng Gong Ci Wushu Guan in Yongchun county, I’d like to set the record straight. The legend of Ng Mui being the founder of Wingchun is just a legend and nothing more. The actual origin of Wingchun traces back to Yongchun County, Fujian. The original art is called Fujian White Crane, which was founded by Fang_Qiniang. Yongchun is the Mandarin pronunciation of Wingchun (Cantonese). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujian_White_Crane When Fujian White Crane was introduced to Foshan, it was known as Yongchun Quan or Yongchun fist. By the time this art was passed down to the next generation, many legends were made up and the connection to Yongchun county, Fujian was forgotten. Another fun fact is Okinawa Karate was also a descendent art of the Fujian White Crane from Yongchun County, Fujian.

Isn’t it a bit weird that the Shaolin male monk temple also had a nunnery next door? Wouldn’t this have posed a problem for the celibate monks?
@SilenMonser

That's assuming the monks had no self control. Considering they're supposed to be very disciplined and rigid in their faith, might actually not be a problem compared to the average male.
