I cannot believe this video is already 8 years old. I remember when I first found Sifu Sergio on RU-vid. I watched every video on this channel and it still blows my mind. I've been studying WingTsun for almost 6 years at this point and I have always wanted to train with you Sifu. If you ever come to Houston, Texas please let me know before you do and I would absolutely love to meet you and train with you. Maybe you could give me some info on how I could travel and meet you, possibly over the summer of 2023? Thanks again for all the knowledge.

Absolutely amazing idea.. bold.. I trust you and your ideas and knowledge.. more than style in particular, I feel that the pioneers made it based more on the application of it, then it was broken down into a teachable martial arts style once they had all the bugs worked out, but by the time Bruce Lee came around it was still being developed in my opinion, Bruce wong sheung Leung and Gary Lam all made contributions.. Yipman was only one practitioner, yip fook choy does wing chun from a different lineage .. but ya, economic motion and forward pressing attacks and hard and soft energy, but look at the 4 basic techniques? Bong ? Fook? Fook obviously comes from crane.. bong I’ve seen in mantis .. PAK SAO I’ve seen in mantis although they use it as a hit not a deflection.. just ideas to comment on🐉👌

6:52 Even though I’ve seen this before, it’s such an exciting topic, I had to chime in once again.. From what I can gather.. depending on the element associated with the particular technique, they come from the following.. 1. WHITE CRANE 2. MANTIS 3. SNAKE 4. PAK-MEI (chum-kiu) bridge seeking and BUI-GEE “snake” BONG-SAO “mantis” PAK-SAO “mantis” FOOK-SAO “cranes wing” covering controlling hands. But, just about all punching comes from CHOY LEE FUT and other LONG FIST STYLES that use vertical punching instead of the SHAOLIN FIST. However, I should note, we kept the PING CHOY as well.. although not as heavy of use.

Thank you, good information as always. Because if your research videos it has sparked a fascination on non-Ipman systems. I am blessed that there is a high quality YKS group of guys here and have touched hand with them. They are good. I have touched hands with many IP man systems (commercial and non commercial WC) and for the most part was nothing special, but this is of course I originally come from a IPman system. There is some very interesting differences in my Quest for WC for what I have found. Lots of underground Chinese sifus who teach total opposite but have good logic. I am now on a research mission for qigong in WC in the first form. Thank you for your videos, you have affirmed a lot of research and my questioning about WC and it's history.

This I would like to say is common knowledge but as you state there are so many poor Wing Chun school's with little experience they believe and still have written on their websites the ridiculous story about the nun seeing 2 animals fighting. Our last uploaded highlights some of the links with other styles. Wing Chun practioners should open their eyes as they are missing out. One self proclaimed master who claims he is the only "master" in the UK teaching authentic Wing Tsun in Bromley won't even allow his students to explore other arts. Such a shame Wing Tsun practioners are so blind.

@SifuSergioChannel
@SifuSergioChannel 10 лет назад
i will release a viddeo on that somewhere in the future although the article by Robert Chu in WCI is a little start,leung bik story is a hoax just read ip man's original writtings on the history of wing chun where he says we must always think of the source of the water when drinking it and then mentiones all his elders and sihings under which he studied,but the most important person according to his 1972 interview with new martial hero magazine leung bik he does not mention. Strange is it not? The most important person under who he studied but who never comes up or is mentioned until 1972 not even in his essay on the history where he mentions everybody's name

One of the things I find interesting is that the closer any Okinawan karate style is to its Fujian / Foshan roots, the more obscure the early history of that style seems to be (where the master studied and for how long etc). Tell people you trained as a uchi-deshi in Japan in the 1970s and you had better have documented proof, including photos of yourself with acknowledged black belts from that era, but it would seem that you can put 'Fujian White Crane' on your CV with very little to back that up. When Chinese historians learn to document historical fact without embellishment or fear of reprisals - and I see nothing to believe that the CCP is any different to previous 'dynasties' - I'll be a lot more inclined to read the background to Wing Chun or any other style. Sadly, they aren't alone in this, as I'm sure you're aware, but I'm unaware of any Japanese martial artist who claims to have supernatural powers (Aikido and ki 'masters' notwithstanding). Even Muay Thai, arguably one of the first 'put up or shut up' martial arts in Southeast Asia, seems to have a mystical aspect for many Thais and the wai kru is just one aspect of that. Who am I to say that a Silat master cant bend the laws of physics (!) - chants and incantations have attracted Westerners for decades, but the mythology only serves to deepen the fog around many (often hotly disputed) 'facts' from an era where many things were passed down orally. In any case, you certainly wouldn't be the first Westerner to try to peer through that fog: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donn_F._Draeger Draeger's 'Asian Fighting Arts' remains a classic to this day, and its an enjoyable read, but I may as well have been reading 'The History of Life on Mars' for all the background I had when I first picked the book up. Even in Draeger's era, there were men willing to cash in on the West's ignorance of what real martial arts looked like - I guess some things remain eternal where there is a buck to be made. Thanks for the video.

Great video! Only something overall (not specific for this video, just overall): To write the chinese names in 3 single names is a little bit outdated. Today in 2021 the western world has adopted to writhe cantonese and korea names with hyphen, and mandarin names together. From today´s standards, Wong Shun Leung should be written as: Wong Shun-leung or Shun-Leung in cantonese and Huang Chunliang in mandarin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Shun-leung) Same with other names like Shan Wah-shun or Yim Wing-chun (mandarin Yan Yongchun) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yim_Wing-chun en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan_Wah-shun Not important but maybe interesting for some people.

Wing chun originated from the scientific principle of human mechanics. As we do not primarily fight with Monkey's, Tigers, Cranes, Dragons or Snakes, the impetus for wing chun came from this idea of fighting with humans and fitting the techniques to human movement and effortless action. In reality, the system was developed from what came before i.e. temple Kung Fu and is steeped in the principles, concepts and observations of the that came before. So, to find the origin of wing chun one must first understand why the techniques of wing chun were chosen (N.B. to fit with human movement) and why the progenitors of the wing chun system made it a peoples art of fighting rather than an established system.
@SifuSergioChannel
@SifuSergioChannel 8 лет назад
+Gary Tyme maybe you should watch part 2 of the video series too, and read Sifu Sergio's book on the history and origins of Wing Chun
@garytyme9384
@garytyme9384 8 лет назад
I really do not need to. I really believe that as Sifu Sergio is working from his own interpretation of the history and has not remained a dragon amongst the trees, and as such, his motivations become clear. If one decides to move out from the trees then beware where you cast your shadow. As a practitioner of Taoism (Daoism) I do submit that; without the spiritual practice of Taoism a Sifu falls short of the Wing Chun philosophy. The Philosophy of Wing Chun Kung Fu Traditional Wing Chun philosophical creed: He who excels as a warrior does not appear formidable. One who excels in fighting is never aroused in anger. One who excels in defeating his enemy does not join issues. One who excels in employing others humbles himself before them. This is the virtue of non-contention and matching the sublimity of heaven. I have had a really good instructor that has a non-subjective view of Wing Chun and has studied every system of Wing Chun; hence, until you have learnt each system, and how this has evolved with each new practitioner, you'll never have the truth about its origin. Video's and books are the unfortunate outcome of arrogance and material worth; not a very Taoist or Wing Chun philosophical approach to promoting what Sifu Sergio believes to be the truth (as he sees it).
@SifuSergioChannel

+Gary Tyme unfortunately you really do should see video 2, as well as read his book as its very clearly outlined and backed up with proof Gary, we wish you a happy 2016!
@garytyme9384
@garytyme9384 8 лет назад
I think your missing my point. Can't everyone just be happy that Wing Chun exists in the world and not get so involved in who knows what about what?! It is a pointless exercise in pride and competition. And as we all know: humans will thrive through collaboration and die through competition. I'm not a believer of any one story of the origins of Wing Chun, more the origin of the techniques, the philosophies, concepts etc. Who cares who developed Wing Chun, I only care that it has supported the betterment of those that continue to practice Wing Chun in its entirety. And, I've got to say that; I have discovered more about Wing Chun through practising it (from the Daoist perspective; which, is part of the origin) than I ever have from researching it. So, likewise, in regards to a prosperous and materialistic new year. I hope the best of your past, is the worst of your future. Peace be with you.
